David Cook in Glendale AZ

Here’s an interesting little tidbit. David Cook’s performance of Mariah Carey’s “Always Be My Baby” has been registered with ASCAP–The American Society of Composers Authors and Publishers. Check it out here.

It’s the only Idol performance of David’s registered at this point. And it’s one of his performances that he’s NOT performing on the tour.

My speculation is that “Always Be My Baby” may end up on the new album, and that he’s saving it to perform on his post-album tour…

What do you think?

  • annoula

I hope it’s on his new album.

What’s the “Always Be My Baby Remix,” though?

  • Trina

Maybe Paula’s psychic abilities were right on when she predicted it would end up in a movie..

There’s two listings though, the standard and “remix”? I can’t remember who but I remember a post win interview where someone told him Mariah wanted him to release it. anyone remember this?

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

I think it’ll be on the album. Fabulous, if that’s the case.

So, would “remix” indicate his remix of Mariah’s original, or can we expect some new twist to his arrangement?

  • jenniewdc

That would indeed be great for ABMB to be on DC’s new album. Sounds right. It’s one of my faves of his and I was a bit disappointed that it wasn’t a tour song. But this is even better.

I also think “remix” signifies a remix of Mariah’s original.

  • spritely

    Verrry intriquing!

    But I don’t understand it.

    1. It seems to be registered under his name twice. Is that once for the single and now for the performance?

    2. Why would they need to register both? I really don’t get that. Is there even the slightest possibility that what they’ve registered recently is the snippet of duet he did with Mariah?

    3. Doesn’t the fact that Mariah is ALSO registered again, at least suggest the possibility of a duet? I’d so love that, because it would surely be a huge seller for him (them).

This is my day for typing out dumb questions and then deleting them. We’ll see if this stands the passage of time, lol–like five minutes from now when I think harder. :)

  • Thea

Definitely on the album. Very good news- that song, DC version, was amazing.

With the “remix” they probably want to keep their hands free for an additional version, like a B side for example. Does that make sense?

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

    3. Doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t the fact that Mariah is ALSO registered again, at least suggest the possibility of a duet? Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d so love that, because it would surely be a huge seller for him (them).

Geez…now that would be perfect. Wasn’t there a rumor floating around about them dueting at the finale?

  • spritely

GwendolynD, there *was* that rumor. I remember wondering at the time what happened with that, and wondering if somebody had leaked, “David and Mariah are singing ABMB together,” and everybody jumped to the conclusion that meant the finale, but what was really meant was. . .recording it together.

  • dante

Wow – this is very exciting – I was surprised he wasn’t performing it on the tour, but it looks like we will be hearing it soon. I wish it would be released as a single. It would climb the charts very quickly.

I have burned some CD’s of DC’s songs and given them to non AI watchers – EVERY SINGLE person has told me how much they like his voice and although they may like different songs, all have commented on ABMB. These people range in age from early 30 to 60 and are varied in music taste from country to Enya (lady who cuts my hair). I did the same thing after Taylor won and sadly didn’t get much feedback.

  • imaj0000

david archuleta also has a song called ” crush” on there that is going to be possibly on his next album!

  • AInoob

I canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t remember who but I remember a post win interview where someone told him Mariah wanted him to release it. anyone remember this?

Trina, that was Michael Slezak who mentioned it to Cookie during the EW interview.

  • Thea

Ok, i actually went to the official MC website (the things one does for the Cookie…) and she has recorded two versions of the song in the past, one of them a remix. I think they just added DC’s name as a performer for both, since the song is still the same (remix or not remix).
I hope it really means it will be on the album.

  • Trina

Very confusing. Looking at all the listings for the song there’s also couple of other mixes (e.g. ‘Mr. Dupri mix”, “Always Club mix” that have Mariah listed but not him so it’s strange they have him listed under “Remix.” If you do a search for his name a song called “Not Me” written by Neal Tiemann also comes up fwiw.

  • Jolene

I think it’s likely that the song will be on a movie soundtrack… I’d love it if ABMB ended up on the album, but I’m pretty sure David would want all originals.

Also, there’s another listing for David, for a song called “Not Me” which was written by Neil Tiemann, the writer of most MWK songs (The Tulsa band DC played for pre-Idol). I don’t know if this means anything at all or if it’s something old that popped up… But it does make me wonder.

  • cookcricket

My speculation is that à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Always Be My Babyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ may end up on the new album, and that heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s saving it to perform on his post-album tourà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

MJ, I’m not sure I did this quote right, but this is one of the first things I thought of when he didn’t do it on the tour. I think it would be an awesome “tie” between AI season and his new songs for the album.

Question: Do you know if he has to put TTOML on his CD? Thanks!

  • cookcricket

WooHoo! I did the quote thingy right!:) I impress myself, LOL!

  • Jolene

Do you know if he has to put TTOML on his CD?

Rumor has it that he doesn’t and he won’t. But – I won’t believe it until I see the tracklist. Amazon still lists the album as “unnamed feat. TOML” so who knows.

  • BootStar

I’m wondering if it’s more likely that ABMB (with or without Mariah singing too) will end up on the soundtrack to a new film and then on the CD for the soundtrack?

I loved DC’s take of the song (and had actually NEVER heard it before, since I tend to run from the radio whenever I hear Mariah’s voice). However, it just doesn’t seem like it would “fit” on a rock album, and David keeps saying he’s making a “rock record” (or something to that effect).

The other thought I had was that maybe they’ll release it as an iTunes-only single when they release the album. That way it would never appear on a hard copy but fans could still get it. Hmmm…

  • cookcricket

I canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t remember who but I remember a post win interview where someone told him Mariah wanted him to release it. anyone remember this?

Trina, that was Michael Slezak who mentioned it to Cookie during the EW interview.

I think it may have been also mentioned in one of his homecoming radio station interviews.

Jolene, thanks for the TTOML answer. I won’t get my hopes up too much yet, though nothing could ruin his CD for me.

  • mrcritic1980

“Always Be My Baby” is already a certified radio hit in my country. I’m not surprised he’d include it in his album.

  • vegasdee

Ok, i actually went to the official MC website (the things one does for the Cookieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦) and she has recorded two versions of the song in the past, one of them a remix.

This is true. Both versions were pretty big way back in the day. There is a a version with just her and there is a version with Mariah, Da Brat, and Xscape. This was the remix http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xx_6be3SDIw .

I went to the concert on saturday night, here in Vegas and I actually met most of the idols. Anyway I asked David Cook why he didn’t perform ABMB and he answered my question. MJ, if you want a recap, will email you one later, and I have a picture of David Cook on my cell—I just have to figure out away to get it off of my cell and onto my computer.

  • Jolene

    …..With?

    *pleading look*

I’d love to read your recap, vegasdee. Oh, and if you don’t have a cable to connect your phone to the computer, you could probably send the picture via MMS to your email. That’s what I do, anyway.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Vegasdee! Yes! Please send me your recap. I would absolutely love that. I’ll post it right a
    way. Nice to see you…

  • Kirsten

    What do you think?

    I think it means nothing.

Songwriters don’t have to belong to ASCAP. It looks like Mariah doesn’t belong. The song is listed because the other two authors of that song do belong.

“Always Be My Baby” has already been offered for sale so it would makes sense for them to register it. Plus it takes time.

Let’s look at Taylor Hicks ASCAP registrations: here

There have been two years to register those songs. I count 6 songs that he never released and one of those I can’t ever even remember him singing. “Jailhouse Rock” and “Play that Funky Music White Boy” were only ever performed on the show. “Hollywood Nights” and “Living for America” were only ever really performed on the tour (and that rehearsal website). “Living for the City” was sung on the show and on tour. When and where did he ever sing “Patience”? I thought that was all the other guys on tour.

Chris Richardson is another example. He has the following songs listed for him: “Geek in Peek” (only on show), “Life is a Highway (tour only), “Sexyback” (a few tour stops), “This Love” (tour?) and “What Hurts the Most” (I don’t even recognize when he did those). One example of what he is not registed for is “Wanted Dead or Alive”, but Chris Daughtry is. Chris Richardson even had a version of that song for sale on iTunes, so why is Daughtry registered and Richardson isn’t?

So, it looks like a ripe old mess. It’s hard to divine anything from a song being registered.

I think it’s probably this interview.

And Kirsten comes along with a pin for that bubble! LOL

And Kirsten comes along with a pin for that bubble! LOL

Sorry. ASCAP is just so convulated it’s hard to infer anything from it. It may very well be that the song is on his album, but I’m thinking it won’t just because they already had on iTunes.

Cookie is supposed to be a unique/original artist. They are kind of blowing that story-line if they have him doing covers. But we all know my predictive powers are pretty weak. You can all rub my nose in it when he releases a debut album full of nothing but covers: “David Cook Re-Arranges the 80s”
    - “Cringe when you remember shoulder pads? Wondering what you were thinking when you bought a Swatch watch for each day of the week? Did you actually have a Mullet? Fear not, David Cook has re-invented the 80s. All those great tunes you remember, but now with less sap and more stalker!!!!”

  • Jolene

“…Fear not, David Cook has re-invented the 80s. All those great tunes you remember, but now with less sap and more stalker!!!!à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

LMAO, Kirsten, I almost fell off the chair.

  • ptslittlecomment

David Archuleta (as performer) also has a song registered with ASCAP, called “Crush”

    LOL Kristen!

Nevertheless, even well-respected artists known mainly for their songwriting aren’t above throwing a cover or two on an album, and it doesn’t render them any less original.

These first Idol albums are such rush jobs, it wouldn’t surprise me to find one of his really popular Idol songs on the album–re-recorded–with maybe the thought of releasing it as a single further down the line.

ABMB by David Cook was my favorite DC song on American Idol this season.
David said he put alot of himself in the song that week. The lyric change he made for the live appearance on AI was substituting, “We will linger on” to “You will linger on” in honor of his Brother, Adam who was sitting in the audience that week. The studio version has the complete song and contains the orignal line, “We will linger on”.
Here is the live tv appearance once again if you want to recap.

Just hearing the possibility of DC singing this on a CD or Movie Track is Great News for me! I’ll take it anyway it comes.
    Thanks for making my day!!

  • davidcookrocks

i really like his version of this song but idk i dont really want it on his album cause itunes had his studio version of ABMB and i bought all of his studio versions so i kinda want all new songs cause i have been listening to his songs on idol all the time and i would really like that his new cd was all new stuff…thats just my opinion

  • Lera

If I’m reading the FAQ on that page correctlly I think that MC had that up there, so each time DC sings that song, she gets something from it. The remix I think is another band who did that song. This is why I believe it was MC’s manager or record lable that submitted it. It’s basically to protect the orginal song writer.

Vegassssssssssss! I was just thinking about you the other day and wondering how you’re doing!! Glad you got to go to the concert and yeah, you better email MJ that recap because I want to read it. :)

  • Margaux

Strangely enough, just a day or two ago I was trying to figure out why DC isn’t performing ABMB on tour, and the only thing that made sense to me was that he’s recording it.

An ITunes single doesn’t make much sense, for the sole reason that all the Cook fans who know how to download have done it already. However, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it as the Wal-Mart bonus track. Same story for “Magic Rainbows”, as the people who still don’t know how to download don’t own it yet.

I think so, too. I also think international fans who don’t get iTunes would also appreciate being able to own physical album copies with ABMB (and maybe TomL) on it.

Thanks for the ASCAP link, mj. A little off-topic here…the Elliott fan in me just had to look at E’s list and found one song thereon that I had not heard or read about before: Get It Over With, which he apparently co-wrote (with Ramsey Drew and Sanders Shannon). I wonder if that would be on the new album…

Oh, some of you might have heard that ABMB was a big hit in the Philippines. Well, Cookie is so popular here that one local station is actually doing a full COOK-fest and has started playing all of Cookie’s AI performances. I read there will be a 3-part special at 12 noon on July 12 and 13, and at 6 pm on July 13 (Manila time). Anyone interested in streaming the station may go here:

    99.5 Campus FM

    :)

  • DJ

I agree with you, MJ, that ABMB may be on an album and performed on tour. It was my favorite of his songs on American Idol. I love when he hits that high note and stretches it out on “linger on.” Magical.

  • smartcookie

My guess (just a guess out of nowhere) as to why he’s not doing ABMB on the tour is that he didn’t want to do too many ballads. I think he had no choice about “Time of My Life,” so that’s one slot gone. I think he also wanted to rock out on something, plus he wanted “My Hero” for his brother, so that’s two slots gone. If “Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” does tie into sponsor Guitar Hero’s new Aerosmith game, then that’s three slots filled. “Billie Jean” was his breakout performance and again, he could rock it. So if it came down to a choice between “Hello” and “ABMB” for the smoky, pin all the girls to their seats, romantic song, I guess he went with “Hello” as a natural opener for his set.

Can’t wait to hear what vegasdee says the real answer is!

  • waffle

Purplesmile – appreciate the heads up! Hope to be able to catch the program. I can’t get enough of DC!!!

  • http://www.myspace.com/cathwood cookrocks

ASCAP collects and pays royalties for songwriters, publishers and composers from recordings and performances. David’s arrangement of ABMB qualifies him as a composer who is entitled to be paid royalties by ASCAP from the ITunes single and the dance remix (because his arrangement is being used for both). This explains why David Cook’s name is there along with the other writers and composers who worked on the song, and why these recordings are registered with ASCAP. He’s getting paid as an composer/arranger by ASCAP.

It doesn’t mean that something huge is getting ready to happen with ABMB, although it could happen anyway.

I have a couple of songwriter friends in ASCAP.
