Check out the album cover for David Cook’s upcoming album, David Cook, due to drop November 18

I like the photo a lot better than the angry/constipated look he sported on the cover of “Light On”.   He looks serious, but not totally pissed off.   The design is clean, and the faded look is eye catching.

And I’ve got the track list too:

01 Declaration
02 Heroes
03 Light On
04 Come Back to Me
05 Life on the Moon
06 Bar-ba-sol
07 Mr. Sensitive
08 Lie
09 I Did It for You
10 Avalanche
11 Permanent
12 A Daily AntheM

(“A Daily Anthem” is from David’s never released-2nd solo album. He posted an update with a track list in an old My Space blog last 11/10/07. Two weeks later, the Hollywood Rounds took place and David advanced to the Top 50, putting the album on hold…)

BONUS TRACK
The Time Of My Life

Back in May, I figured “Time of My Life” would be left off the CD, but as it’s since turned into the Magic Rainbow that Refuses to Die, it naturally had to be included on the track list, somewhere.

  • Trina

SQUEEEE love, love, love the cover!

  • http://myspace.com/pm68 Pam

I really like the cover. I agree MJ, I think this look is better. :)

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Like I said in the headlines thread: I’m not crazy about the album cover, but at least it’s not a seemingly floating head in a sea of purple.

And yay for a track list! :D

  • sunchick

Bar-ba-sol…I love it. Is this an homage to his facial hair? :laugh_tb:

Also super happy that ADailyAntheM made the cut. I think that one will make me cry.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

    angry/constipated look

    :laugh_tb:

I’m really wondering about that “Bar-ba-sol”….

  • Lisa

*I Did It For You* has my attention, seems like it could be a tearjerker just by the title but then again I could be wrong. It will probably be hard rock, lol.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

    “Lie” sounds angry….

  • Keel

Wow, that cover doesn’t exactly scream hard rawk, does it? I like it because it’s flattering yet he’s not too prettied up. That said, I was expecting something a bit less pop rocky looking. Daughtry’s album cover looked a lot more ‘rawk’ than this and we all know how AC that was. (I am hoping the content is a lot harder than the look on the outside.)

    Other thoughts:

    1) I was really expecting LO to be the first track (hmmm).
    2) The thought of a song called “Mr. Sensitive” is making me giggle.
    3) Yay for A Daily Anthem making the cut.

ETA: I guess white is his signature color? (Les Paul, AH cover, LO single cover, THE Record cover)

  • smartcookie

I’m wondering about Barbasol as well. It’s not even like Burma Shave, where you could expect silly rhymes. “No brush, no lather, no rub in” isn’t exactly Sondheim.

“I Did It For You” reminds me of “Everything I Do (I Do It For You),” the Robin Hood song, and “Come Back to Me” sounds like a potential Always-Be-My-Baby panty-peeler. Bummer no “Always Be My Baby,” but maybe Mariah wanted too much for the rights. Or maybe Cook just never really liked that song as much as I did.

Can’t wait to hear all of these tracks and analyze into infinity!

  • soundscene

Oh, much better than the single cover! I like it!

BTW, I’m totally going into Best Buy and putting Archie’s and Cook’s albums next to each other. They compliment each other nicely. lol.

  • CathyMK

Love the cover. I think it’s funny though that all of his “official” photos have him in serious rocker mode, even going back to the Axium and MWK photos!

I could see a story arc from those titles about leaving home, then coming to terms with/ accepting the changes in relationships that leaving causes, until he finally accepts that the changes are permanent. Wonder how A Daily AntheM fits in, since that’s the older one that made the album. It’s interesting that the old one is the last one on the album. Guess he’s not leaving everyone behind in the end (not that I ever thought he would, being the loyal guy that he is).

  • GEEK4VOCAB

Love the album cover. Love the song titles. SOOOO happy to see A Daily AntheM in the line up.

Can not wait to hear Mr. Sensitive and Bar-ba-sol.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

    1) I was really expecting LO to be the first track (hmmm).

Track 3 is very typical spot for a single.

As far as looking “rawk”. When bands try too hard to look badass I find it not at all convincing and actually a bit ridiculous, KWIM?

  • annoula

Where is “A Daily Anthem” from?

    I’m excited; interesting titles!

  • DivaE

the title font reminds me a lot of the font on Archie’s CD- all caps and faded…

  • wordnerdarchie

Remember that during American Idol there seemed to be a lot of WTF moments with DC and his song choices? I think that Bar-ba-sol is another WTF Cook! moment.

  • Keel

As far as looking à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“rawkà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ . When bands try too hard to look badass I find it not at all convincing and actually a bit ridiculous, KWIM?

Maybe ‘rawk’ isn’t the right word. I wasn’t expecting DC to look all badass or anything. If anything, I just wasn’t expecting his face to be featured so prominently in the cover (not that I’m complaining). I suppose I was expecting a cover that was more like AH in concept (not necessarily the look) — a cover that communicates something more about the album than just ‘THIS IS A DAVID COOK ALBUM AND IN IT YOU WILL FIND DAVID COOK SONGS. SINCERELY, DAVID COOK’. Maybe the fact that I knew he had ‘formed’ a band led me astray as far as my expectations.

  • CathyMK

A Daily AntheM is one of the song titles from his unreleased 2nd album. The tracklist is at his old MySpace:

    http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.ListAll&friendID=11237516

“Right now, there are ten songs. I’m crossing my fingers for an eleventh, but time will tell.

the tracks, right now, in now particular order, are:

    A Daily AntheM

    Chandeliers (Monty’s pining for ‘Scandeliers’)

    The Downfall

    Debutante

    Elizabeth

    Better Never Than Late

We’re Only Honest When We’re Sleeping

    Eta Carinae

    A Dirty Shame

    Precious Decline”

Wish we’d gotten Eta Carinae too. But then, I’m greedy!

  • smartcookie

We may find out that some others besides A Daily AntheM made the list under new names. (Yes, me and my fantasy life are getting along fine.)

Just had a new thought that maybe he’s saving Eta Carinae (both song and overall title) for his second album. Hee. That would be a kick.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹THIS IS A DAVID COOK ALBUM AND IN IT YOU WILL FIND DAVID COOK SONGS. SINCERELY, DAVID COOKà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢.

Well…nothing says that like his name and picture on the cover, no?

  • sparklesgirl2

Ooh, and the DC original that was supposed to be on his pre-Idol new CD is the LAST SONG. Nice (i don’t count bonus tracks as last songs)

  • JudyOhio

His hair is styled a little too high to suit me. It seems to make his head look longer or something, but that’s just me scrutinizing too heavily, lol. I agree that DC and DA’s CD’s would look good sitting next to each other. The black/white/red covers, dark/light contrast, and serious facial expressions. Two very nice looking guys to say the least!

  • KrazeeK120

    1. I’m soooooooooooooooooooo relieved to find out that Magic Rainbow made its way on to the debut single!!!!11!111eleventy-one!!!11!!!1 OMG!!11!!!!!!

    2.

When bands try too hard to look badass I find it not at all convincing and actually a bit ridiculous, KWIM?

Kind of like everything Daughtry does?? Oh yes I DID just go there!!

In all seriousness, I’m very excited to purchase David Cook’s album next month. I like the cover art. I don’t LOVE it, but I like it. I’m not going to try to read into the song titles because I’m usually wrong about stuff like that (“Light On” sounds like the title to a schmaltzy ballad to me). So I’ll just be pleasantly (I hope) surprised when I hear all of the songs.

  • mac

Love the album cover. He really has gorgeous lips!

  • JudyOhio

    “He really has gorgeous lips!”

    He does indeed!

  • hollygo9

Agreed. Nothing worse than the ‘faux bad-ass’ look. I’d much rather see something somewhat sincere.

  • spritely

I wonder if they’ll toss us another luscious morsel in a week or so and tell us the names of the songwriters who worked with David on each song. I’m dying to know. He and his team are such teases! But generous, too, by giving us stuff to tide us over. Do recording artists often do things like this? I ask because I don’t know.

  • CathyMK

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹THIS IS A DAVID COOK ALBUM AND IN IT YOU WILL FIND DAVID COOK SONGS. SINCERELY, DAVID COOKà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢.

Wellà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦nothing says that like his name and picture on the cover, no?

I’m thinking they want all of the Christmas shoppers at Target, Best Buy, Walmart, etc. to notice his name and photo as they’re rushing by and think, “Oh yeah, there’s that guy that won AI. Gee, I liked Billie Jean, maybe I’ll like this.”

And then maybe they’ll buy a few more for Christmas presents too. :lol_tb:

  • maturin

THIS IS A DAVID COOK ALBUM AND IN IT YOU WILL FIND DAVID COOK SONGS. SINCERELY, DAVID COOK

    Hee!

But seriously, staying that simple may be the best route this time out. There are several potential identity problems to work out, as people have been chatting about here for so long. On the show he sang everything from rock to musical theater to country to “diva” Mariah, pleasing a huge swath of people but raising conflicting desires and expectations. There’s the “Time of My Life” upbeat AC inspirational success. There are the Analog Heart indie fans. There are the inevitable Daughtry comparisons.

Keeping to exactly the message you formulate is probably the best approach.

Also, it’s simple, but kind of a mesmerizing picture. “You and me, maturin. Quit joking around. Together let us sit down and listen to my album.” Do you hear it? Alrighty then, it’s just me.

  • Mariam94

Love the album cover! Although what did they do to his face?! It looks so…long? Maybe it’s because they spiked his hair or he lost some weight. But overall, love it :)

  • http://myspace.com/pm68 Pam

  • AInoob

This was a cool little crumb to find in my inbox tonight! Having seen the pictures from his photoshoots they could definitely have picked a hotter picture but that being said, I like the picture and think he looks really good. I really like the distressed font and background and like that they didn’t try to make his cover all dark and “look at me, I’m a rocker!” The b&w theme with the splash of red on his last name is eye-catching in its simplicity.

The track listing is interesting. Bar-ba-sol…uh, yeah, I definitely want to see those lyrics, lol. And ode to Man Cement or Sharp Dressed Head, perhaps? :mrgreen_wp:

  • Mia

I did not want TOML on the album because it is such a mediocre song but it’s tough little heart has won me over. Magic Rainbow is not a pretty poodle with rainbow hair, it is a growly, somewhat disreputable looking little bulldog with a rainbow collar. He grabs the position on radio playlist with his snappy little mouth and would not L-E-T G-O !

So on that note, here is my little prayer for DC’s album.

“May the good karma of Magic Rainbow rub off on you and yours…”

  • spritely

growly, somewhat disreputable looking little bulldog with a rainbow collar.

Mia, I love that. It’s perfect. Grrrr.

That Chicago rock station! That’s great news. #3. Yes!

  • leome

Not a fan pf the picture, but huge fan of the Black and White. It’s a pretty cover.

Bar-ba-sol? I wish I could listen to that now. It’s just going to be fun.
I was thinking if any of those could be the song used on AI next season. Maybe Heroes?
It’s fun to speculate with titles.

  • shell29

    I’m liking the album cover. :thumbup_tb: Bar-ba-sol??

  • annoula

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m thinking they want all of the Christmas shoppers at Target, Best Buy, Walmart, etc. to notice his name and photo as theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re rushing by and think, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Oh yeah, thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s that guy that won AI. Gee, I liked Billie Jean, maybe Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll like this.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

And then maybe theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll buy a few more for Christmas presents too.

And the touch of red complements Target colors along with Christmas wrapping paper. Good call. :)

Yeah, his face does look long and somehow disproportionate to the rest of his body. Oh well. I’m just hoping that the rest of the songs on this album aren’t similar to Light On.

Thanks, CathyMK. Was there ever a way to listen to these songs or did he just post the song titles?

  • Scifisam

Yes! a Canton one! finally one in my neck of the woods. Too bad I’ve never heard of it and don’t listen to top 40 stations.

I’m very happy with the cover. Mostly I’m just overjoyed that he doesn’t have that huge stupid point in the middle of his head like on DCO. Hopefully we will still be able to find out why he originally capitalized the “m” at the end of A Daily Anthem even though it’s now lowercase.

  • Mia

    A Daily AntheM = ADAM

It is a song about his brother.

  • hypertwink

Although I don’t like the actual picture of DC, I do like the concept of the cover. It’s the dichotomy of Cookie — cleaned up but still a little mussed up, which is what Dolly week epitomized.

I wonder what the piano and strings song is. And what happend to Quietly? And I wonder if they tweaked A Daily Anthem or is it the same from what he did on his 2nd album?

  • FolkFan

There are too many fantastic comments in this thread to quote—I’d fear that I’d miss one that merited a quote. Suffiice it to say that, on a per comment basis, this thread is a winner.

I like the cover. Not my favorite DC photo, but it works in terms of being serious without going overboard. Intrigued by the inclusion of the ode to Adam.

I have no problem with DC’s new songs hanging out some with Magic Rainbow. Songs could learn a lot from that tough little song.

Awesome news on the adds. Especially the first rock add, in a great market. Here’s hoping that other stations follow. LO debuted on the top 50 for HAC this morning.

  • Keel

Alright, my petty expectations aside, I have to say that it’s a nice looking cover and, much like the LO cover, it’s gonna draw your eye and stand out on that iTunes front page / Walmart/Target/Best Buy aisle.

  • sma11ie

OMFG!! I come onto MJ’s tonight and WTF do I see posted? Waaah! I’m so excited I can’t process or be coherent. I will try :lol_tb:

Also super happy that ADailyAntheM made the cut. I think that one will make me cry.

This is embarrassing but I’ll say it anyways– as soon as I saw that on the track list, tears– F-ing TEARS sprang to my eyes! For a song I haven’t even heard–WTF is the matter with me!? I do NOT typically get this invested in… well someone I don’t know. But it’s so beautiful to me that it’s the last track (sorry, not counting Magic Rainbows– as much as I have grudgingly developed a fondness for that song, I’m quite sure it’s not part of DC’s vision for a cohesive record, so I will follow his lead and ignore its existence on this record). I remember him saying his favorite song on Analog Heart was Silver because he was sick when he wrote it, and because it was the last song, so I feel like he has a special place in his heart for the last track. And I FLOVE Silver.

Anyways, one more comment– I flove the cover: the coloring, the font, the white space, everything about it!! I was among those really disappointed that this is self-titled, but the cover looks so perfect sans title that I don’t even care anymore. I don’t usually buy physical CDs, but I’ll have to grab one now!

Okay, I lied, one more comment– no Quietly? Sad!

  • wjmtv

I already know that “Mr. Sensitive” will be my favorite song.

Mighty intrigued by the track on that never-released album called, “We’re Only Honest When We’re Sleeping.” That’s a great line.

Off to see if I can get Chicago rock stations up here in the sticks of Northern IL….

  • reinharv

I too am liking the album cover. Oh…to be 25 again….(slaps face and throws water…) I don’t think he could ever look bad in any picture and I sure like the look of that album cover and the song list – yes Bar-ba-sol??? and Mr. Sensitive?? LOVE IT!! :smile1_ee:

  • Scifisam

    “A Daily AntheM = ADAM

It is a song about his brother.”

    Boy do I feel slow.

Anyway, can’t wait to hear the song.

  • mac

The “Cook” part of the lettering sort of looks like “hot molten lava”, red with like little flames coming out? Or have I just been listening to Randy too long?

  • smartcookie

    Don’t need no Barbasol
You can keep your Burma Shave
    I like my facial hair
    It’s what the ladies crave…

    No?

    They called her Bar-ba-sol
When she shaved the men each day
    Bar-ba, Bar-ba, Bar-ba Sol
Till she took my heart away

    Or how about…

    That bar
    Bar-ba-sol
    It ate my soul
    Bar-ba-sol
    Hard liquor
    Bad women
    Bar-ba-sol
    Ain’t no pleasure
    Too much pain
    Bartender
    At Bar-ba-sol
    Serving pieces of my soul
    At Bar-ba-sol

Kind of like Hotel California for a bar. If I were, you know, Don Henley or Glenn Frey and could actually write lyrics.

  • CathyMK

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ A Daily Anthemà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ is from Davidà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s never released-2nd solo album. He posted an update with a track list in an old My Space blog last 11/10/07.

Wow, I had not put that timeline together before. So, last Nov. he was telling people about the track and album titles for his self-released album and hoping it would sell/get noticed. Almost a year to the day later, he’s telling his thousands of fans the track and album titles for his major label debut that has already sold who knows how many (probably many thousands) through Amazon pre-orders. Love that symmetry!

ETA: LOL SmartCookie! As a beard-lover, I’ll go with the first lyric!

ETA2: Annoula, as far as I know no one outside of David’s circle has heard the mysterious second album. If they were ever posted on his MySpace or Imeem they were taken down when AI started and haven’t been put back. Hopefully more of the songs will surface eventually. (Or if someone has them, please share!)

  • Mia

I bow down to thee Smartcookie ! What depth ! What pathos ! What a vivid picture albeit the one I hope is gone when I am done rubbing my eyes..

not sure if this has been posted

david Cook is going to be on SNL on 1st November.

  • ShariG

Love the cover. He was the most beautiful wide set eyes and perfect shaped lips. Although he has a killer smile, I like this serious look. Determined. Confident. Smokin’!

  • May

    They called her Bar-ba-sol
When she shaved the men each day
    Bar-ba, Bar-ba, Bar-ba Sol

LOL. This one makes me think of Barry Manilow’s Copacabana…

  • http://widyatarina.blogspot.com widz

    OMG thanks soo much dv..

    I haven’t seen that before…
I guess the SNL producers read blogs LOL.

    DAVID ON SNL!!! WOOHOO!

  • AInoob

DV, if you wanna know the truth, you just made my day! Thank you for that link.

  • CathyMK

david Cook is going to be on SNL on 1st November.

Straight from Lorne Michaels mouth! I don’t think I’ll worry about the album getting enough promotion. :wink1_tb:

Will he have to sing TOML along with LO, or will we get another song? And will the whole band be there? OMG!!

  • EmmaJK

Well, every time I go and try to have a real life, I log on to see something like this. Sqeeeee! This is almost too much goodness to process. I like the cover a lot. And a track list?! Oh, how I love that A Daily Anthem made it. Honestly can’t wait to hear Bar Ba Sol. Hee.

One of the stations added today (WPIA) is my hometown! Yay, but do I really have to start listening to Top 40 now? I will for you, David.

Oh good grief, Saturday Night Live? This is truly a great day!

  • Barbariba

Also, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s simple, but kind of a mesmerizing picture. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“You and me, maturin. Quit joking around. Together let us sit down and listen to my album.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Do you hear it? Alrighty then, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just me.

I hear it! I hear it! But he’s speaking to me! LOL

I am beyond excited now for The Record to be released. I’ve wanted to hear A Daily AntheM for a long time now and finally get my chance. May I say that I flove the album cover, everything about it. I think self titling it is smart marketing strategy. I can wait for David’s next album to have a title worthy of a word nerd.

  • FolkFan

I was just coming to post about SNL. This is huge. That is the show before the presidential election. The audience will be at its height. Woo-hoo.

  • Dr. Tracey

OMG! my internet goes down at the most inappropriate times!!!
    A picture! A track list!!
    I CAN’T WAIT!!!!!!!!!

  • spritely

It sure will be huge, Folk Fan. Man, what timing! SNL has been getting bigger and bigger audiences because of Tina Fey’s impersonation. Wow. When the Cook Team drops news, they drop NEWS.

  • http://widyatarina.blogspot.com widz

I was just coming to post about SNL. This is huge. That is the show before the presidential election. The audience will be at its height. Woo-hoo.

Yep, a lot of viewers that don’t know about David will see him perform on SNL..
    woohoo!

  • Mia

By the way, I think David designed the cover and the artwork or at least that is what he implied in a radio interview. He has done album covers for Axium CDs, Analog Heart and also MidWest Kings. He is putting that graphics design degree to good use.

  • spritely

I wonder if he’ll play with his new band. Wouldn’t THAT be cool!

  • FolkFan

I’m sure he will, Spritely. They always use their own bands on SNL, right?

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

    SNL!?!?! Yay!!!

  • Trina

Holy shit! Daughtry never even got SNL!

Wow look at how crappy his promo is!! :laugh_tb:

The only AI’ers who have made it to SNL were Clay, Kelly and Carrie. David is in very good company!

  • Michelle

SNL?! SNL!!!! And people are actually watching SNL lately ;)

I’m probably the only one, but I like that the album is self-titled. It serves well for branding purposes, and also I like it as a very simple, cleancut way of stating: I am David Cook, and this is what I’m about.

    (omfg SNL!!!!)

  • http://myspace.com/pm68 Pam

SNL is HUGE! I really haven’t watched SNL in ages! I can’t wait! :jittery_tb:

  • shell29

Wow look at how crappy his promo is!!

I know! Cook is totally getting the shaft. :laugh_tb:

Sarcasm aside, great news about the SNL appearance! I’ll be sure to check it out. :smile1_tb:

  • leome

    SNL?! The real SNL??!!!
    I wasn’t expecting that. That’s is awesome!

But… does that mean he’ll be singing Time Of My Life along with Light On or can we actually expect him to sing something else besides TOML? I think it would be the perfect place to premiere some new song.

  • shell29

He’s almost certainly going to be performing Light On. If he performs two songs (the musical guests usually perform two songs, right?), TOML would probably be the other.

  • spritely

They do use their own bands, FolkFan. It would be weird if he didn’t. So, therefore, he will. I have spoken. :) They must have been so laughing at all the angsting about promotion!

  • Trina

I can’t imagine at all he would perform TOML on SNL, not a huge showcase like that. It’s close enough to the album drop for him to do another from there.

  • cheese

First of all, so far the best part of my Disney vacation has been the news that David will be on SNL, lol. I really thought he had about a 0.5% chance of getting on there, since most of the acts the last couple of seasons have leaned more towards the alternative spectrum (with some exceptions, of course)

I’m thinking that there is no way he’s going to sing a five-month-old coronation song and AC hit on national TV at this point. That’s not really the audience he wants to reach with this appearance. I think we’ll get to hear another song from the album, along with Light On.

  • Hazehel

Oh smartcookie, I can see David Cook doing it Beach Boys style –

    Bar bar bar, ba Bar-ba-sol,
    Bar bar bar, ba Bar-ba-sol,
    Bar-ba-sol, in my hand, Bar-ba-sol
You’ve got me foamin’ and a’shavin’
    Foamin’ and a’shavin’ Bar-ba-sol

  • spritely

    Cheese’s Words>>>>>>God’s Ears

  • tinawina

Jesus Lord he looks hot in that picture. Damn.

Uh, sorry for all the blaspheming and stuff. Ha.

    SNL!!!!! YAYAYAYAYAYAY!

  • sunchick

    smartcookie :lol_tb:

    Chris Cornell style:

    Barbasol is not my lather
it’s just a foam that claims to give a close shave
but my beard is here to stay….

SNL! SNL! Ohhh, what if he gets to do a song parody with Andy Samberg……

I don’t really like that picture of David on the cover. He normally photographs so well and this is one of the few photos that I don’t care for. Doesn’t matter though – I’ll still buy the album

SNL?! The Saturday before the election?! SERIOUSLY?!?!

My jaw just hit the floor. Whoever got that gig for him is my favorite person in the world. That is HUGE.

  • shell29

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m thinking that there is no way heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s going to sing a five-month-old coronation song and AC hit on national TV at this point. Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not really the audience he wants to reach with this appearance. I think weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll get to hear another song from the album, along with Light On.

I hope you guys are right about that ’cause I would prefer to hear something new besides TOML, but it just seems like TOML won’t die! That’s why I have my doubts about a new song from the album being performed apart from Light On.

  • KarenLE67

TOML as a bonus track – is it going to be the original studio recording? A new studio recording? Maybe something toned down and acoustic? (I personally found it much more palatable acoustic.)

  • cookcricket

not sure if this has been posted

david Cook is going to be on SNL on 1st November.

OMG!!!! The one time of year I have to travel for work!!! I’ll be on the road coming home from the airport! :cry_tb: :wallbash_tb:

mj, please, please, please post this as soon as you can!!! :help_tb:

Oh how I wish I’d be able to see the actual show!!! :sad_tb:

I mean I hate to be so down with all of the good news posted here, but SNL is HUGE!!!!

BTW, I. LOVE. THE. ALBUM COVER.!!!! *on edge of seat waiting, waitiing, waiting…*

Nothing like feeling those good ol’ mixed emotions!!! :blink_tb:

  • KarenLE67

Probably would be considered going too far by husband if I replace the rotating family photos with the album cover for my desktop wallpaper…

  • IGetCranked

I absolutely love the album cover and the track list looks very promising!

  • 123abc456

I love the album cover, the list of songs, snl what a day.

  • Keel

SNL?! The Saturday before the election?! SERIOUSLY?!?!

My jaw just hit the floor. Whoever got that gig for him is my favorite person in the world. That is HUGE.

Why you’re welcome, says Simon Fuller.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

LOL Keel, I know, right? Simon Fuller is on my good side, for now. :)

I’m still scraping my jaw off the floor lol. All the while my roommate is trying to convince me to go on a quick trip to NYC that weekend for my birthday. “Quick trip” from Florida, at that. ;) If only!

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

SNL is BIG. I can’t remember the last time an Idol performed on SNL this soon after their win. Clay Aiken may have appeared in the fall to promote his debut album. I think it took Carrie, maybe a year to perform on SNL. Has Kelly been on SNL? Probably to sing “Since U Been Gone”, but I don’t remember…

And I’m with Cheese. No effing way is he singing TOML on SNL. It’ll be “Light On” and another new song from the album. Perhaps a potential single.

  • dreamr

I love the album cover and I love seeing the tracklisting and trying to come up with what I think the songs are going to be about. I just told like all of my online friends that they are going to have to buy his album (not that I haven’t told them that before now, but now that we actually get to see the cover, I’ve reminded them all haha).

Hazehel, haha! Love your lyrics! :P

Sarah, did you audition for AI season 4 in Orlando? If so, we met down there! XD

Sorry, that was random. But at least most of my post is on topic? lol

  • Aileen

Clay Aiken was on SNL in February 2004, Kelly was on in February 2005, Carrie was on February 2008. I think Cook is breaking the February rule, but it does seem to make him the earliest post show Idol on SNL.

  • ladymadonna

I just checked SNL archives. This is indeed the earliest post-win (er..in the case of Clay, post-finale) performance for past Idols. Everyone else who’s been on performed in the Spring either one or two years after their season ended (and Carrie was also on for a second time this past Spring). Here are the dates:

Clay: 02.12.04 (‘Invisible’ and ‘The Way’)
    Kelly: 02.12.05 (SUBG and ‘Breakaway’)
Carrie: 03.24.07 (‘Before He Cheats’ and ‘Wasted’) and 02.23.08 (‘All American Girl’ and ‘Flat on the Floor’)

  • sma11ie

OMFG for the second time tonight- SN-F-ing-L?! Was dying before, dead now. Remember how DC mentioned starting the promo stuff on 11/1 on the radio the other day? Man, I bet he was itching to blurt out this HUGE news on the inside, but, as always, loves to keep things close to the vest until it’s time to shock and surprise us. Guh. Just thinking about what Noctem said about what it’s like to root for your favorite amateur football player or whatever to make it big– and dude, I just got goosebumps thinking about how our favorite amateur rocker DC just showed us that he’s ALREADY being accepted with open arms into the big leagues… WOW.

  • Trina

Why youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re welcome, says Simon Fuller.

Ha! I thought the same thing. At first I was about to start throwing my undying love at RCA then I realized, nah I bet this is all Simon’s doing.

Just a word of warning about anyone who may consider traveling at length to go to this. SNL is really hard to get into. Don’t even attempt putting a request in for tickets because tickets are in such demand they have one lottery type drawing in August for the season. Dress rehearsal is a bit easier to get into but even with that you have to try for standby tickets and that’s hit or miss. If you do attempt to get in be prepared for an insanely long standby line and lots of waiting around.

How mindblowing is it that when this airs he made it onto SNL AND Oprah before his album even comes out. Pretty amazing.

  • idolfan86

the cover is definitely better than the crap single cover. but it looks kinda cheap in my opinion.

    the tracklisting is interesting…

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Oh yeah Trina, I knew that about tickets. Which is why I said my roommate was *trying* to convince me. :) She’s always up for a trip, and usually I am too. But a “quick” weekend trip from Orlando to NYC all for a show we’d never get into? Not so much. I’ll definitely be watching it on tv though!! :)

dreamr, yes, I was at the season 4 Orlando auditions. I do believe I remember you! :)

The cover is growing on me. I like the distressed look, and the splash of red.

  • FolkFan

I think that I may be able to force myself to look at that CD cover a few times. Maybe a few times after that.

Perhaps I should just keep it on my living room table for a few weeks. Um, just case someone wants to listen to it. Yeah, that’s a good reason to keep it sitting out….

  • batgirl478

This is a little off topic but not sure where else to post this and I wanted to share. I was out at a bar tonight and its karaoke night. Well, in between the karaoke singers they always play music from the jukebox. After one singer I suddenly heard the chorus of Light On playing in the bar. I was with a friend, another David fan, and we both just looked at each other and were like “OMG!” I haven’t heard it on the radio yet so this was the first time I’d heard the song besides online or on my ipod. So needless to say I was really excited!

  • elisad

WOW, look what I wake up to…

The cover is okey, not great(I would prefer one without his picture, but I knew I wouldn’t get that), not bad either.

SNL? For real? Yes!!!! Hope he won’t sing ToML. Please let him do a little short sketch, please please please… I forgot that’s the one before the election, um, that’s huge.

Next stop, The Daily Show! (Yeah I can dream…)

Oh, and I’m really glad A Daily Anthem made the cut.

  • smartcookie

SNL is huge!! I can’t believe this. I was kind of hoping, but I really didn’t think I’d get it. Duffy was on the last time I watched. With her huge hit “Mercy.” If we’re really lucky, they’ll put him in a few sketches, too, like Clay. And if he’s really lucky, Tina Fey will be on that night, and our boy David will get to hang with Tina and Ben Affleck after the show.

After all the speculation, is it wrong that I’m hoping the second song is the infamous Bar-ba-sol?

On the subject of Bar-ba-sol, props to sunchick and Hazehel for their lyrics. “Barbasol is not my lather” is fantastic! But if the real song is about a bad girl who happens to shave for a living or a bar from hell, I reserve the right to say I called it.

  • JudyOhio

Congrats to DC getting to be on SNL. That should give him a huge exposure!
    :thumbup_tb:

  • hypertwink

I was going to speculate that since Tina Fey is there as Sarah Palin, David could play Todd but then I realized that Ben Affleck was the host and he probably looks more in line with the First Gentleman of Alaska than DC. Maybe, he could play Bristol’s baby daddy. LOL

  • ladymadonna

I wouldn’t be surprised if they riff in some way on the 97 million votes and the “more people vote for the American Idol than for President of the United States” thang. I can definitely see it it for the promos (still dying over the thought of Cookfleck hamming it up together even for 15-30 seconds), though a cameo in a skit would be fantastic. Cook sure proved he could handle it with that awesome ‘Best Week Ever’ appearance.

  • hardkandy

Uhh, so far I am not liking anything that I’ve heard/seen of DC’s debut album. I don’t like Light On. I don’t like this album cover. I find a lot of the titles in the tracklist somewhat weird. Bar-ba-sol? Mr. Sensitive? Uhhhh.

That said, I hope his second single will be better. I’m still willing to give it a chance, maybe I will like the final product.

  • elisad

Oh, there is the thing though. Quietly and Not Me didn’t make it.

  • Suzanne

    I love that “you” isn’t spelled “u” and “to” isn’t spelled “2.”

  • AZIdolFan

i’m so excited that we finally have an album cover and track listings!!!! And the SNL thing is so HUGE!!!! I can’t wait for 11/1/08!!!!

  • FolkFan

It’s interesting that the two songs that made it into ASCAP aren’t on the CD. I wonder which of the songs is the one with just him, a piano, and strings….

  • hypertwink

Maybe, Quietly and Not Me will be bonus tracks in the Walmart edition or something.

  • noctem seizure

It’s a good cover, other than the fact that his hair is a little weird. I really, really hope that TOML is only included only as a bonus track on the digital version of the album. I do not want that song anywhere near the physical CD. Unless it’s acoustic. Or maybe thrash-metal which was the style that somebody imagined him using to cover “Crush”. Which would be awesome, by the way.

  • Layla

OMFG!!! I am off on my autumn break and having my coffee and grinnin’ from ear-to-ear! I wanna wake up my daughters to tell them all of the glorious DC news but they’ll kill me!

As someone said…from Cheese’s lips to God’s ears:

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m thinking that there is no way heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s going to sing a five-month-old coronation song and AC hit on national TV at this point. MJ,

Are you going to put up the whole show here (SNL)? Some of us won’t be able to see it. Aren’t we a demanding bunch, but you spoil us! And we love it!

  • elisad

You can always illegally download that show, LOL…

  • Layla

Had to go gaze at the record cover before giving an opinion….

The black and white is very cool with the red for the lettering-except the lettering should have been the same as what we see on DCO at the top of the page…that’s his handwriting, no?

As for his head lookin big…well, dude’s got a big head! LOL His lips are too die for and he looks serious, like he wants to have a talk with me…uh us!

Yeps—lovin’ the cover! Can’t wait to beable to hold it in my hot little hands.

All off this great DC news is making me giddy.

Tracklisting sounds really awesome…can’t wait to listen, dissect, listen, swoon, listen, cry, listen, dance, listen!

  • Layla

You can always illegally download that show, LOLà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

I try not to do shit like that but I will for this if I have too! LOL

i’m done worring about this record.
    Bar-ba-sol FTMFW!

    great cover :)
but i’ve seen better pictures of cook floating around
but still much better than the light on cover

he had such a molten hot sexy vibe goin on idol and they are robotosizin him in pictures:(
can’t wait to hear this cd though :)

and to see the sales.. to see if the majority of 90some odd million votes gets him sales
light on has been slow out of the gate….
seeing as davidC has a much more mature following.. hes going to have
to work harder i think to make sales than davidA and his rabid pack of lil bopper fans lol (no offense but he did win the teen choice award for this lol)
    :)

  • maturin

SmartCookie, I got all the way back to the start of this and found you awesome and prophetic version of Bar Ba Sol

    Ahahahhahahhha!

    That bar
    Bar-ba-sol
    It ate my soul
    Bar-ba-sol
    Hard liquor
    Bad women
    Bar-ba-sol
    Ainà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t no pleasure
    Too much pain
    Bartender
    At Bar-ba-sol
    Serving pieces of my soul
    At Bar-ba-sol

    That is the best!

  • PCdoctor

Barbasol is a brand of shaving cream.

  • Davidx2

I really like the album cover….if DC did indeed design it, :thumbup_tb:

I’m hoping that “Time of My Life” is a live version.

  • poporange

I heard his song unfortunately which I was afraid of Daivd C sounds a little leaning too much to the formatic pop singer for me.(Ai brand) It just is not in my zone which is ok people have different likes . I will wait for his second cd .

    The cover is nice…..

  • sma11ie

ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve seen better pictures of cook floating around

I personally love the cover– the spacing, the layout, the red, and the overall design (I feel DC had a heavy hand in that), but I agree with you the picture of him isn’t the hottest. But I think someone said that they probably want a cover that dudes wouldn’t be embarrassed to take to the checkout, and to that end, it makes sense that it’s not some super-sexy shot of DC, I guess? I’m just glad it’s not a big-ol-head shot like the LO cover.

I’ll also say– I’m MOST excited about the “weird” song titles like Bar-ba-sol and Mr. Sensitive. They’re so WTF and not-typical/boring song titles, and we don’t know what to expect! This reminds me so much of the nervousness we fans would have the entire season right after DC’s song choices were leaked on Tuesday afternoon– and how he always proved our fears were in vain!

  • elisad

Mr. Sensitive is a WTF song title? Jason Mraz – Mr. Curiosity

    Geeks are all like that…:)

  • IndyMuse

I LOVE all the speculative versions of Bar-ba-sol I’ve seen on here! It does lend itself to some…uh…interesting possibilities! Thanks for sharing.

I LOVE the cover, love the song titles, very excited about all of this. It gave me the biggest smile last night. I wanted to jump up and down!

  • Trina

The RCA press site has the album cover up in a HUGE res.

And Rolling Stone has this up on their news page a link to DCO with the news about the tracklist/cover and also the SNL news.

  • sma11ie

Mr. Sensitive is a WTF song title? Jason Mraz – Mr. Curiosity

Well, it’s a little more WTF for a rock song than for a Jason Mraz song. Which is actually my point– I think it’s WTF in a good way. Just like when he was bucking expectations and kicking ass with his at-times off-the-wall song choices on Idol, because we know DC is a lot of things– a rocker who’s also wordnerd. If the track listing was full of cliched song titles, or ones that all sound the same– like “Right On”, or “Fight On”, or “Might On” (hee, I kid, I heart Light On), I’d be worried. But with these song titles, I’m excited.

  • elisad

    OK I hear ya~

Rolling Stone has an article on David in their new issue.

  • wjmtv

LOL layla…”dude’s got a big head!”

Which is why they shouldn’t elongate said head with kewpie hair. I liked the basic bedhead he had in the final weeks of the show. This is too studied. Other than that, it’s a decent pic. Although I get a sense of vulnerability in his expression.

MHO, based on no industry knowledge whatsoever, is that once we hear the entire album, we’re going to agree that LO was the most commercial track (not counting that bonus). And I suspect there will be plenty to love for those who are not liking and/or freaking out over LO. For me, I agree with folks who find it generic, but even so, it sure shows off his pipes.

I can’t believe I’ll be watching SNL in a couple of weeks. I haven’t seen that show since high school (and we’re talkin’ Gilda Radner era here…..)

  • Layla

Great blurb in Rollingstone…with a link to DCO.

Plus my girl Rachael Yamagata is mentioned on the cover in big letters…she’s brilliant! And Obama on the cover! All kinds of win this issue!

    Go DC! Go!

  • Michelle

The RCA press site has the album cover up in a HUGE res.

    Ooh, the coat is tweed.

Rolling Stone has an article on David in their new issue.

When will this come out? And…he didn’t get a mention on the cover but there is “The Return of AC/DC” … :D

  • elisad

    ^
    LOL…

    When will this come out?

I don’t really know but their site says it’s on stands now.

  • sma11ie

    From the RS issue title:

IN THE STUDIO: David Cook Crafts Heaviest ‘American Idol’ Album Yet

I love that they said that he “crafts” it, because this album isn’t a bunch of songs thrown at him, he really created it! But I wonder what they mean by heaviest? I mean, maybe to some, heaviest AI album is like the world’s tallest midget, but I’m really curious what RS based that line on. Have they heard it/parts of it already (seems soon when they were just mastering this week), or was it based on David’s own words? But DC himself just stated the record would balance heavy and delicate. Hmm.

  • Trina

RS may have actually gone into the studio with him judging by the capitalized words so they may have heard some rough cuts even before the mastering.

  • Michelle

Urban Dictionary says heavy can mean “really good”.

(Damn, did I just have to go look something up in UD? I’m getting old.)

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Here’s the press release that was sent out if anyone is curious:

    PR Newswire

  • elisad

    RS scan

I haven’t finished it yet, because I went nuts when I read he was looking up Mogwai(a post-rock band). I LOVE them! OMG!!!!

  • Layla

Have to comment here too…great Rollingstone article. Sounds like the writer got to hear some of the songs and really really liked them.

    Mogwai fuckin RAWKS!!!!

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

    Great Rollingstone article.

    Yes. My favorite quotes:

“I just want the songs to kick you in the teeth or make you want to cry à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ or do something drastic, like jump off a building.”

“It was really scary à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ the best analogy I can come up with is that it was like taking off your clothes in church.”

  • dapingguo

I love the cover–”There are many Davis, this one is COOK!”
I love the “speaking eyes”– “I’m telling you seriously,
    it’s worth listening,
    I did my best ,
    you’ll feel my heart,
    …………… “

  • wjmtv

Thanks for the article scan, elisad!

After reading it, it sounds as if “heavy” could go two ways: as the already-mentioned “really good” (which is what it meant to me, someone who grew up in the days when that word was synonymous with “groovy”); or “thought-provoking,” as in, “Whoa. That’s some heavy sh*t, Dave. I wanna go jump off a building now.”

  • sma11ie

    [Heavy could be] à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“thought-provoking,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ as in, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Whoa. Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s some heavy sh*t, Dave. I wanna go jump off a building now.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

Haha. I thought of that interpretation too. DC himself used “heavy” to describe the way things worked out with his AI experience, having his brothers and mother there at the end, etc. I was also thinking that the album would be full of heavy hitters, haha. But mostly, I think he meant heavy as in a harder rock sound– like heavy metal (okay not really, but I mean, aggro-rock, though?) And his original usage of the word was juxtaposed with the “delicate” songs. I don’t see how delicate songs would need to be balanced with thought-provoking ones. A harder rock sound is fine with me, but when DC says the record would have both heavy and delicate songs, I wonder why RS chose to just dub it heavy in the headline. Maybe their 8-song preview didn’t include the delicate ones? DC did say the vocals-piano-strings song was the last one he recorded.
