Check out the album cover for David Cook’s upcoming album, David Cook, due to drop November 18

I like the photo a lot better than the angry/constipated look he sported on the cover of “Light On”.   He looks serious, but not totally pissed off.   The design is clean, and the faded look is eye catching.

And I’ve got the track list too:

01 Declaration
02 Heroes
03 Light On
04 Come Back to Me
05 Life on the Moon
06 Bar-ba-sol
07 Mr. Sensitive
08 Lie
09 I Did It for You
10 Avalanche
11 Permanent
12 A Daily AntheM

(“A Daily Anthem” is from David’s never released-2nd solo album. He posted an update with a track list in an old My Space blog last 11/10/07. Two weeks later, the Hollywood Rounds took place and David advanced to the Top 50, putting the album on hold…)

BONUS TRACK
The Time Of My Life

Back in May, I figured “Time of My Life” would be left off the CD, but as it’s since turned into the Magic Rainbow that Refuses to Die, it naturally had to be included on the track list, somewhere.

I heard his song unfortunately which I was afraid of Daivd C sounds a little leaning too much to the formatic pop singer for me.(Ai brand) It just is not in my zone which is ok people have different likes . I will wait for his second cd .

    The cover is nice…..

ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve seen better pictures of cook floating around

I personally love the cover– the spacing, the layout, the red, and the overall design (I feel DC had a heavy hand in that), but I agree with you the picture of him isn’t the hottest. But I think someone said that they probably want a cover that dudes wouldn’t be embarrassed to take to the checkout, and to that end, it makes sense that it’s not some super-sexy shot of DC, I guess? I’m just glad it’s not a big-ol-head shot like the LO cover.

I’ll also say– I’m MOST excited about the “weird” song titles like Bar-ba-sol and Mr. Sensitive. They’re so WTF and not-typical/boring song titles, and we don’t know what to expect! This reminds me so much of the nervousness we fans would have the entire season right after DC’s song choices were leaked on Tuesday afternoon– and how he always proved our fears were in vain!

Mr. Sensitive is a WTF song title? Jason Mraz – Mr. Curiosity

    Geeks are all like that…:)

  • IndyMuse

I LOVE all the speculative versions of Bar-ba-sol I’ve seen on here! It does lend itself to some…uh…interesting possibilities! Thanks for sharing.

I LOVE the cover, love the song titles, very excited about all of this. It gave me the biggest smile last night. I wanted to jump up and down!

The RCA press site has the album cover up in a HUGE res.

And Rolling Stone has this up on their news page a link to DCO with the news about the tracklist/cover and also the SNL news.

Mr. Sensitive is a WTF song title? Jason Mraz – Mr. Curiosity

Well, it’s a little more WTF for a rock song than for a Jason Mraz song. Which is actually my point– I think it’s WTF in a good way. Just like when he was bucking expectations and kicking ass with his at-times off-the-wall song choices on Idol, because we know DC is a lot of things– a rocker who’s also wordnerd. If the track listing was full of cliched song titles, or ones that all sound the same– like “Right On”, or “Fight On”, or “Might On” (hee, I kid, I heart Light On), I’d be worried. But with these song titles, I’m excited.

    OK I hear ya~

Rolling Stone has an article on David in their new issue.

LOL layla…”dude’s got a big head!”

Which is why they shouldn’t elongate said head with kewpie hair. I liked the basic bedhead he had in the final weeks of the show. This is too studied. Other than that, it’s a decent pic. Although I get a sense of vulnerability in his expression.

MHO, based on no industry knowledge whatsoever, is that once we hear the entire album, we’re going to agree that LO was the most commercial track (not counting that bonus). And I suspect there will be plenty to love for those who are not liking and/or freaking out over LO. For me, I agree with folks who find it generic, but even so, it sure shows off his pipes.

I can’t believe I’ll be watching SNL in a couple of weeks. I haven’t seen that show since high school (and we’re talkin’ Gilda Radner era here…..)

Great blurb in Rollingstone…with a link to DCO.

Plus my girl Rachael Yamagata is mentioned on the cover in big letters…she’s brilliant! And Obama on the cover! All kinds of win this issue!

    Go DC! Go!

    Ooh, the coat is tweed.

Rolling Stone has an article on David in their new issue.

    From the RS issue title:

IN THE STUDIO: David Cook Crafts Heaviest ‘American Idol’ Album Yet

I love that they said that he “crafts” it, because this album isn’t a bunch of songs thrown at him, he really created it! But I wonder what they mean by heaviest? I mean, maybe to some, heaviest AI album is like the world’s tallest midget, but I’m really curious what RS based that line on. Have they heard it/parts of it already (seems soon when they were just mastering this week), or was it based on David’s own words? But DC himself just stated the record would balance heavy and delicate. Hmm.

  • Trina

RS may have actually gone into the studio with him judging by the capitalized words so they may have heard some rough cuts even before the mastering.

  • Michelle

Urban Dictionary says heavy can mean “really good”.

(Damn, did I just have to go look something up in UD? I’m getting old.)

Here’s the press release that was sent out if anyone is curious:

    RS scan

I haven’t finished it yet, because I went nuts when I read he was looking up Mogwai(a post-rock band). I LOVE them! OMG!!!!

  • Layla

Have to comment here too…great Rollingstone article. Sounds like the writer got to hear some of the songs and really really liked them.

    Mogwai fuckin RAWKS!!!!

    Great Rollingstone article.

    Yes. My favorite quotes:

“I just want the songs to kick you in the teeth or make you want to cry à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ or do something drastic, like jump off a building.”

“It was really scary à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ the best analogy I can come up with is that it was like taking off your clothes in church.”

  • dapingguo

I love the cover–”There are many Davis, this one is COOK!”
I love the “speaking eyes”– “I’m telling you seriously,
    it’s worth listening,
    I did my best ,
    you’ll feel my heart,
    …………… “

  • wjmtv

Thanks for the article scan, elisad!

After reading it, it sounds as if “heavy” could go two ways: as the already-mentioned “really good” (which is what it meant to me, someone who grew up in the days when that word was synonymous with “groovy”); or “thought-provoking,” as in, “Whoa. That’s some heavy sh*t, Dave. I wanna go jump off a building now.”

  • sma11ie

    [Heavy could be] à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“thought-provoking,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ as in, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Whoa. Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s some heavy sh*t, Dave. I wanna go jump off a building now.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

Haha. I thought of that interpretation too. DC himself used “heavy” to describe the way things worked out with his AI experience, having his brothers and mother there at the end, etc. I was also thinking that the album would be full of heavy hitters, haha. But mostly, I think he meant heavy as in a harder rock sound– like heavy metal (okay not really, but I mean, aggro-rock, though?) And his original usage of the word was juxtaposed with the “delicate” songs. I don’t see how delicate songs would need to be balanced with thought-provoking ones. A harder rock sound is fine with me, but when DC says the record would have both heavy and delicate songs, I wonder why RS chose to just dub it heavy in the headline. Maybe their 8-song preview didn’t include the delicate ones? DC did say the vocals-piano-strings song was the last one he recorded.
