David Cook – 94.1 Pet-a-Palooza – Las Vegas NV

David Cook played an acoustic set at today’s MIX 94.1 Pet-A-Palooza at Star Nursery Fields in Las Vegas. David and his band played a set of eight songs, including “Paper Heart” which David says will make the album, and two covers–“Drive” by the Cars and “Rolling in the Deep” by Adele.

Check out some photos HERE. As soon as the videos roll in, I’ll post them.

    Here is the Adele cover!

I must get this on my ipod ASAP!

ETA. Well, I will as soon as I find a vid with less distortion. This vid is front row w/ good picture but a lot of bass.

ETA2. Oh, yay, the same youtuber posted the Drive cover too!

  • Buffynut

    David is looking soooooo good!

  • gigglesmo3

Here is a link to the whole concert recorded on UStream. Not the best sound or visual, but not the worse either.

  • progression

That Drive cover and I might be getting married. It’s a fantastic showcase for Dave’s vocals.

  • weareallinnocent

Fantastic (and Finally!!!) So pleased to hear Cook again. Bring on the single and album. The wait has been too, too long!

    ETA:

Acoustic Paper Heart. Watch while you can, lol.

Whoa, great quality. Many thanks wordnerdarchie!

  • wordnerdarchie

Acoustic Paper Heart. Watch while you can, lol.

  • JudyOhio

Well, I’ve finally gotten used to Cook’s hair off his forehead (took me long enough!), lol………….He’s lookin’ GOOD!

  • connico479

I REALLY, REALLY have missed live David! Loved the acoustic versions of the DCTR songs as well as Paper Heart (awesome song) from the new record. The covers were also to die for. I will be spending some time in my own little David Cook heaven as these vids roll in. Thanks to all who contributed. Oh, and Paper Heart trending worldwide organically w/o any concerted fandom effort as REALLY nice.

  • suenigma

Oh Dear God, I have wanted to hear Cook do something soulful like Rolling in the Deep forever. Unsurprisingly he far surpassed my expectations. Have missed him so much.

  • primeminister

Well, I’ve finally gotten used to Cook’s hair off his forehead (took me long enough!), lol………….He’s lookin’ GOOD!

It’s like Cook and Kris traded hairstyles.

    I love Paper Heart.

  • Garnetstar

Paper Heart is a kick ass ear worm. I cant wait till I hear a recorded version. Loved Rolling In The Deep. So. Damn. Much. (dont look here nitpicky – he flubbed 2nd & 3rd verse) I cant wait till they get so good its second nature. Its really perfect for his voice to show of that soulful side he has.

  • RockiDreams

Love him and can’t wait for the new album. He is just so good.

  • jtgraffix

that rolling in the deep is effen epic. it seems like his vocals are much more controlled this time around. can’t wait for the album!

  • mermichelle

That voice still gets me. Can not wait for the album.

    THIS!!

  • IndyMuse

Wow, wow, wow is all I can say to Rolling in the Deep.

  • IndyMuse

Wow, loving all these vids. Great to hear Paper Heart again, this time acoustic. Wonderful either way!

    Thanks for the thread, MJ!

  • ladymadonna

Both of the new covers are crazy-good, and I loved the new acoustic arrangements on the DCTR material and Paper Heart. His voice is sounding stellar, and the band is clicking despite being off the road for 9 months. Some lovely guitarwork going on up there.

  • Eyeswideshut2

And how about Drive ….. Fan-frickin-tastic

  • lili_anne7

WOW! Loved Rolling in the Deep! I forgot how good this guy is. His voice is amazing!

  • IndyMuse

I noticed the guitar work too, ladymadonna. Very, very nice. Some of this is jaw-droppingly good.

  • wordnerdarchie

Here’s the banter where he talks about playing songs from the new record. (And a performance)

  • BootStar

I’m rolling in the deep here waiting for the rest of the videos to appear. Love that new one, “Some Song.” LMAO.

It’s been WAY too long since I’ve heard “acoustic Cook,” my personal favorite.

And how about Drive ….. Fan-frickin-tastic

Seriously, how does he do that? I never even liked that song before.

For real – the magic of the Cookie!

  • Incipit

I thought I said everything I had to say on the other thread…but not so. *snerk*

I finally caught the three part harmony, and some of that guitar work, and I still wait for all the videos to come in – in case one has a nuance that I missed. The voice is sounding strong and stellar, and the Boyz are sounding ready to roll again –

And ‘This’ that we just listened to – with a less than perfect, but very immediate audio – ‘This’ is why I can pre-order an invisible album with an unknown tracklist from David Cook, and never worry will I like it.

What a treat for all who were able to see this acoustic show( and for all of us to see afterward.) The Adele song was awesome. I found myself clapping along at home when he was clapping!
    Is it April 19th yet?

  • Mel1

David’s hair is so thick now.

  • cookbunny

Seriously, David needs to do an acoustic EP. I don’t care if it’s not “perfect” by his standards…it would be by ours!

ETA: and I listened to the banter before…that thing. And he definitely says “OFF the record.” Phew, thank goodness.

  • unidentified

I really like “Paper Heart” I only heard it 1x last time he sang it before all the youtubes were pulled. And this one was really clear and could hear every word.

  • karenc

That concert was so awesome!!! Loved the acoustic versions of the songs and the new covers. And I love Paper Heart and glad it’s going to be on the album. I’m amazed that it was a trending topic and it was a natural trend.

I especally loved Drive. And I was just saying that David Cook is one of the only artists that when he does a cover I like it better than the original.

  • milwlovesadam

Wow. Just Wow. Even with somewhat crappy audio, just wow. I think I’m buying a CD. Hope he comes to my town on tour, I’m seeing him live for sure. He’s getting better and better.

  • GwendolynD

    Adele! Awesome….

  • Listening

WOW, I believe I said in a different thread I’d be disappointed if I didn’t get a new song from the album slaps hand lightly bad bad bad girl have a little faith in David.

I didn’t need a new song from the Album when David can provide fantastic covers. I loved them both thinking Rolling in the Deep the best b/c we got to see the band harmonize w/ him I love it when they sing. I pray we get them on the album w/ David it was magic. This is a taste of what David can do this is what we’re gonna get on album 2. Now to wait for April 19.

  • kmd

Cook sounded good on those two cover songs he sang. I just love Adele and that song.

  • breakdown

Petapalooza is always fun! I’ll post 5 videos later tonite.

  • Buffynut

Question? Is this called acoustic because David isn’t plugged in? Because there’s a keyboard and the other guitar (not neal) is electric. Oops, just noticed Neal is plugged in too. Wait!! David is plugged in too, so it’s not acoustic?? I am confused.

ETA: I am not confused about one thing, though. Nice pants, David!

  • Incipit

so it’s not acoustic?? I am confused.

Buffynut, I have no idea. Just before I shut down the Twitter feed, I saw someone post that Train was not acoustic.

I guess it’s the semantic difference between acoustic and unplugged?

    Someone will know.

  • SybilTrelawney

David’s hair is so thick now.

Hombre Solutions must have come out with a new improved version of Mega Manscape. More holding power, now with SIX times the flammability. DEFINITELY worth the risk.

As for Rolling in the Deep, I’m leaving my husband for it.

  • suenigma

ETA: I am not confused about one thing, though. Nice pants, David!

Truer words were never spoken. LMAO

  • Eyeswideshut2

I think the use of acoustic guitars is enough to qualify it as acoustic. But I may be confused. Although stupefied is probably a better word :-)

ETA: I am not confused about one thing, though. Nice pants, David!

  • standtotheright

Oops, just noticed Neal is plugged in too. Wait!! David is plugged in too, so it’s not acoustic??

Any “acoustic” show for an audience larger than a coffeehouse will require that the guitars are plugged in so their audio output can go through the venue’s speakers. This is why most guitar manufacturers refer to their guitars as acoustic-electric. A true electric guitar, however, is usually patched through to effects pedals and amps before the signal is sent to the venue speakers.

Anderson wasn’t playing an acoustic-electric bass, but they exist. (I believe Bowersox’s bassist, Frankie May, has played one on gigs with her.) There’s really no way to make a keyboard acoustic because of how it’s built, but I assume everyone lets that slide because the alternative is bringing in a piano.

In the end, I don’t think it was false advertising.

Also, hooray for tight band. One would never know how long it’s been since they’d played out together.

  • wordnerdarchie

She has Come Back to Me up now. A guy sang along on parts.

ETA: Great harmonies, you can hear both Andy & Kyle really well.

  • ilovekrisallen39

Thanks for the MP and the wonderful video’s. Can’t wait for the CD and more concerts.

  • ladymadonna

This is really interesting. Cspannie’s videos are so close-up and high-quality you can really see why the middle section of Rolling in the Deep felt a bit more sluggish than the rest of it – they were having some sort of technical difficulties all the way through that part. You can see Dave trying to mouth something to Gabe several times (I can’t really read lips but I think maybe it’s something a bout the piano?), and then finally go over and whisper something to him before heading back to the mic. I think they kept the clapping part going quite a bit longer than intended, which is why the intensity dropped some, and Dave tried to pick them back up by encouraging the audience to get louder.

    Check it starting ~2:30 – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnU2l_BgP2A

Even with all that going on, it was pretty incredible. I hope they keep working this one out – it could be rockin’ as hell on tour by the time it’s all said and done.

  • Davidx2

Nice to see Cookie again…it’s been a long time.

I was surprised when I read that he covered “Rolling in the Deep”…but it was really good. I just love Adele…her “21” cd is awesome.

Can’t wait for more new Cook music!

  • progression

I think they kept the clapping part going quite a bit longer than intended, which is why the intensity dropped some, and Dave tried to pick them back up by encouraging the audience to get louder

    .

I noticed that too. They handled it like total pros though, it wasn’t even apparent on the first couple vids.

  • sunchick

It’s such a shame that David Cook has lost his touch.

Ha ha, right. Made ya look. How does he keep getting better? Crazy.

Went to a neighboorhood block party/spring festival type thingy this evening, and I had to stop myself from rushing home to see if the vids were up yet. Thankyouthankyou, MJ and video taking people. Welcome back, boys. *sighs contentedly* The acoustic Wood Pulp Corazon is fantastical. And Dave’s cover turns Drive into like a whole other (even better) song…and then there’s the Adele cover, which is suprisingly good…and hey, Neal’s ginger beard is kind of epic, eh?

Oh, okay, and yeah, how you doin’ new pants. :D

  • brittneybabyy

I love the fact that he covered Rolling In The Deep – Adele is amazing, and it’s great to hear a raspy, rock-voiced male cover of the song.

I’m SO excited for Cook’s new album. I’m sure it won’t disappoint. (:

  • GreenHippo

Why o why wasn’t I in Vegas today??? Oh yeah – I am on call – curse work!!
    I so wanted to be there…. :(
But hey there is always MJ!!! THANKS A BUNCH :)
“Rolling in the Deep” is a win win song cover, l love Adele and David. So Good.

  • Incipit

After listening to Eyeswideshut2’s posted mp3 a few kazillion times – a thought occurs. (doesn’t take me long. *snerk*)

The last time out, David and Neal selected songs to cover for concerts that meshed well with the tracks of the first album. If this holds with covers selected to play with the new album, and these two are representative, my conclusion is DCTR2 is going to be pretty damn intense. Which, YES.

    IMO. Of Course.

  • fadetowhite

OK – I thought I was losing the love. I was getting all indifferent and uninterested and trying not to.

So howcome all it takes is one video of a cover of ‘Drive; and I’m right back there.

I just love the way this guy sings/interprets songs.

    It’s been too long!

Looks like I’ve got some watching to do.

Thanks everyone for all the videos!

  • fadetowhite

Can I just say that I love Paper Heart…I do…I do…I don’t even have to do a typical Cook fan qualification on it.

  • fadetowhite

That Adele cover is brilliant! Tech difficulties, whatever – his voice sounds amazing singing that kind of song – amazing.

And it just shows me that whatever was going on on the AI DYFAM cover – which is OK as these things go – it was not the full-blown Cook effect.

  • fadetowhite

All it takes is one mini-concert for me to go and pre-order the album from DCO, when I swore I would wait for the Amazon pre-order.

It’s that easy – or is it that I’m that easy?

Excitement levels are ramping way back up – and I’m a post whore (or whatever)! :lol

  • jennyl

I absolutely love love Adele. She’s one of the greatest singers of all time in my books. DC is did more than justice to the cover :) Can’t wait for his album.

  • dcglam

Have to admit that I was a bit worried when I first read that David had performed Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep”. In my mind, that is one of those songs that only the original artist can do justice to, especially if it’s Adele.
However, I was so wrong in my thinking — David nailed it!!

  • Tess

Sorry…Cook’s no Ric Ocasek or Benjamin Orr…but it’s nice to hear a 28 year old song (Drive) being highlighted again. Was Cookie even born then?

My ipod is very happy this morning! :D I love his voice and having new music in the form of 2 new covers is a great present. I knew I’d enjoy the Adele cover no matter what cause that is a great song. With Drive, I was surprised by how lovely it sounded – that range is a really good place for his voice.

Yesterday reinforced for me just how much I love David’s voice. Because I love Idol as a TV show so much, and follow it so closely, it’s always funny when I get reminded that my Cook love is not just an AI love. I loved him as a reality TV show character, and now, I love him separately from that as a musician. I’m happy to have enjoyed him both ways!

Thanks everyone for all the great videos. I keep finding a better video where the sound is better to rip MP3 off of. I have at least 3 of each new song.

pattycake: : BTW, Kyle tweeted about idol performance, so I guess its as official as its going to get.

Kyle has now deleted that tweet. He wrote:

“…See you guys all soon on that American Idol show!”

Which implies they will be on American Idol before they even begin rehearsing for the Concert For Hope in DC which is April 29th. We knew they would be on Idol this season but we didn’t know when. I guess Kyle needs a refresher course on Cook’s Cone of Silence, LOL.

listen Never heard of the song “Rolling in the Deep”… (guess I am really out of it.)

It’s Adele’s latest single off her new album “21”

  • Garnetstar

Yeah and I think Adele will be the #1 record on Billboard next week again. She opened a few weeks ago with 300,000 in sales. She is one of the rare young artists with buzz, but without a number 1 charting song on radio. She is female which is the trend but she not selling sex ala Katy Perry, RiRi, Britney etc… And OMG no autotune! Love her so freaking much. And am just so happy David decided to cover this. Step out of the box dude. I hope he does this on the new tour. And he remembers to sing the rest of the song. LOL.

Paper Heart continues to win me over. Ear worm.

And this, of course, is where “mileage varies” (heh, I made a funny) comes into play because I never liked The Cars or “Drive,” so that’s a good thing as far as I’m concerned. Cook was born in Dec. 1982.

Hey, MJ, huge thanks for fixing the editing function!!!!! My paragraph breaks are intact!

  • BootStar

Adele has an acoustic version of “Rolling in the Deep” on her album too. It’s awesome either way.

The first time I heard it I thought it was going to be the song of the year. I’m sure everybody will be covering it soon. Kinda like Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody” or Gnarls Barkely’s “Crazy.” Just a fantastic song. Adele wrote it with somebody named Paul Epworth. I don’t suppose Cook had a chance to write with him? :-)

  • progression

With Drive, I was surprised by how lovely it sounded – that range is a really good place for his voice.

That’s was my reaction too – really in his sweet spot. And he clearly connects to the lyrics, he emoting the heck out of it. Great cover. Loving RitD as well although it reminds me a bit of the early performances of LO when he was still working out how to wrestle it to the ground, lol. Oh and that song that should not be named? Love it acoustic, showcases how well written it is. Awesome start for the new era all the way around.

  • http://www.twilightslo.com Mateja

Ehh, Adele … Her songs are kinda good, but she totally destroys them with either production or phrasing. Too bad.

Interesting that Dave chose to sing that particular song by Adele out of all the contemporary songs out there. It’s probably my favorite current song out there, short of a Mumford & Sons tune. Just noticed that RITD is currently #1 on AAA (my format of choice), #5 on HAC (and climbing fast) and rising fast on Top 40 and AC charts as well. It might well be one of the Songs of the Year.

And progression, I agree with you. Dave did a good job on the song, but between the technical difficulties and the clearly limited time rehearsing the song, you know they can do so much more with it. I’d rather hear him do his own original songs in concert, but I could see this song joining a stable of covers he reaches for, in addition to the beautiful Drive, to fill out a set. I can picture it being a cool occasional addition.

Ehh, Adele … Her songs are kinda good, but she totally destroys them with either production or phrasing. Too bad.

Except her fans LOVE her phrasing and the production (or lack thereof!) on her albums. She’s doing really well here in the US. Girl can sang. Her vocals don’t need to be autotuned or buried underneath some horrid synth beats. She sounds the same when she sings live as she does on her albums. How many pop singers do that today? That’s what sets her apart IMHO.

  • Garnetstar

LoL Bootstar. I was just about to post, at least she has phrasing. But it is a case of YMMV or whatever they call it. I will admit threre are some dull spots on the record but on the whole IMO it’s good stuff.

Back to David, dude looks good. Neal looks like a Viking. Andy is adorbs sitting in front of the Piano. Can’t really see Kyle in the videos. And I cant believe he will be the father of 2 come August. And Monty is the dude. On the whole it was a good concert.

Late comment, but I love Adele’s 21. It 21 breaks my heart. This song is amazing. And I do love her phrasing. She’s so young, what a bright future ahead.

movin2thabeet , I only just became familiar w/that song about two weeks ago – a friend pointed me at it because of my usual complaints re lack of quality in Top 40, and I hope it’s not an outlier there, because I really liked it. Driving beat, No Autotune – real vocals, and something to say.

In covering such a well-written and performed current song, David gives an indication of where his head is musically – I said earlier, he and Neal pick covers that ‘fit’ them, and that one fits into a facet of charting music. The whole thing just increases the impatience level for the originals, dammit!

Also. Adding a little borrowed NumberNerd Factoid – in the midst of the excitement and anticipation – and “Paper Heart” trending organically Worldwide – DCTR jumped from #630 in pop yesterday to #352. I guess a few folks were impressed. *wink*

I’m a little late, but WOW…I loved this concert. His old songs sound so good being played on acoustic guitar. The vocals in Drive? So nice. Adele’s Rolling in the Deep is my favorite song right now, so I nearly died hearing that was his choice for a cover. Loved it. Loved ALL of it. Add in good hair, pants and a Dublin kiss… perfection. hehe :)

You know I’ve been way too busy when I am only NOW getting in here and taking some time to watch AcousticDave videos :) Happy, happy, happy to be wallowing in Cookie goodness.

  • weareallinnocent

Good times. Thanks for the videos, MJ and everyone.

And, yeah, thanks Cook for distracting me from my work, even though I really could’ve used a productive Sunday. Oh well…

  • tierbee

Welllll, not busy anymore ’cause I can’t pull myself away from YouTube. Haha. I love me some acoustic David Cook. I might have listened to the “Drive” cover *mumble* times. :)

A man and his dog. *sigh*

  • FolkFan

Awesome. Thanks for the links and videos.

And thank you, Dublin, for making a special appearance.

  • SybilTrelawney

Not digging the Samurai Lumberjack styling for Neal. David, on the other hand, looks spectacular.

Pet a Palooza? It seems like one step beneath the local county fair. Ticket prices are $8 and includes seeing animals. Is this a good career move?

  • Joyed

Is this a good career move?

    Yes.

The reason why: this was a radio sponsored event, which means playing at this event increases the likelihood of the station getting onboard to play his new single. Having stations support your single early in the process is extremely helpful in order to chart high enough that other stations will start playing you as well.

Also, this is a charitable event that raises money for animal shelters, hence the “pet” part of Pet-a-Palooza.

But even if this were a fair, it isn’t a bad event to play – getting to play before large audiences is never a bad thing. With regard to ticket prices, I don’t know how payment works for radio gigs (they might play for free to help the station for all I know), but for regular gigs, you can’t judge an artist’s fee by the ticket price at every venue. Sometimes a fair will pay several thousand or even 100k for a performer and the ticket prices will still be quite low due to the large volume of audience members.

(Kirsten can probably explain this better in the numbers thread if you ask there :)).

From my animal rescuing perspective, YAY for the first part.

But yeah, I’m not sure why this would be a bad career move. New ears = good thing. A lot of people go to this, right? Plus he’s been off the radar for a while, so videos floating around of lovely acoustic performances is good, too, nice advertising.

It’s not a bad career move. It’s radio promo. No other explanation necessary.

I think this thread might be dead but I have new comments so I’ll just post it into the ether =P. I ended up watching a couple different youtubes of RITD this weekend, and I gotta say, my first few times watching, I totally didn’t realize David was having technical difficulties during the clap-along. I was so busy flailing at how good he sounded on that awesome song, I didn’t even notice David wasn’t happy with it at all. Dude is such a perfectionist- I thought they sounded great, but he was so pissed off with what happened that he flicked his guitar pick into the back of the stage and [I think] cursed to himself after the performance. Angry Dave was kinda hot, lol.

Also, I’m really surprised they didn’t do Lie. I thought that was a favorite of his, and lends itself well to acoustic. The a capella would’ve been cool for non-fans to hear. But he’s WTFCook, so his choices are never obvious, I guess.

Just in case there were any remaining questions about whether or not this was a good move for him:

#markandmercedes In case you missed it at Pet-a-Palooza @thedavidcook covering “Rolling in the Deep” by Adele. AWESOME http://youtu.be/neorA9oiV3c about 10 hours ago via TweetDeck

Lots of people asking about the @thedavidcook cover of “Rolling in the Deep” by Adele from Pet-a-Palooza! http://youtu.be/neorA9oiV3c

Getting DJs on the radio station at which one performs not only to talk up a performance after the fact, but tweet about it twice, means both lots of new ears and a really favorable relationship with the station going forward.

Also, I’m really surprised they didn’t do Lie

I was too, but I think the live version has a very similar tempo and mood to Drive, so he probably decided it was one or the other given the short set and went with the new cover. I don’t think it’s going into the mothballs.

Not yet. Cool artist. Awesome videos.

Looking forward to much excitement over David’s new single and album. :)

I don’t know anything about this but I’m guessing corporate sponsors of a fair might also be part of the financing stuff.

Some people may not like Train but they followed David Cook onstage and they are a grammy winning group. They always have good artists performing at this event ~ some that come to mind quickly are Kris Allen, Orianthi, Justin Nozuka, Mat Kearney and Gavin Rossdale. So yes, this is a worthy event and one of the few bargains in Las Vegas.

  • Keel

The DJs for the Las Vegas radio station that sponsored Pet-a-Palooza were pretty much talking up David’s set the whole morning. And although they mentioned the other acts, you could tell that it was David that had them flailing (kept on playing excerpts of his songs). And they talked about people emailing/tweeting them about David’s set and RITD cover. Yup, can’t imagine this being anything but a great thing.

Also, so far in my timeline, I’ve seen retweets of four different radio stations that have blogged or tweeted links to the RITD cover, as well as music blogs and Idol blogs that have done the same thing, while also mentioning that his new album and/or single is coming out soon. Win-win!

This man sounds and looks incredible. Thanks for the video!
