David Archuleta spoke at the 25th annual Utah Conference for Women in Salt Lake City this morning.

He joined former first lady Laura Bush, Utah’s first lady Jeanette Herbert and pianist Roger Williams at this year’s conference, which was sponsored by Sen. Orrin Hatch and his wife Elaine.

David tweeted afterward, “Had a great time speaking! Thanks to all the women who came out haha. Laura Bush will be speaking at the afternoon session.”

  • Check out more photos from the event HERE.   More on David’s speech HERE.

In a 50 minute speech, David described his   journey to becoming a pop artist, with his typically sweet and self-deprecating humor.   After speaking, he sang a snippet of “O Holy Night” from his new CD, Christmas From the Heart.

BONUS! After the jump, check out some extra footage from the morning David spent Christmas caroling with MTV’s Jim Cantiello…

    ‘christ..mas….. sweaters……’ LOL

  • NewFan

Excellent photograph! Handsome dude. And so animated at an event for women. I may have just fallen in love.

  • rayni

What a precious young man. And so handsome in his suit. I feel like a weepy, proud mom. Poor idols – so many women out here lovin’ them so many ways…..

  • ggdoorsfan

david looks very handsome in those photos – and kudos for him facing his public speaking fears head on…. some tweets from attendees at the conference…

@iteachkidz22: It’s a David frenzy here at the Utah Women’s Conference! I think David made some new fans today. Both CD for sale here!

‘ @iteachkidz22: Just met David! Actually got to talk to him! He was smiling and laughing! Everyone here is buying his Christmas CD!’

newangel: Back from the Women’s Conference. It was epic. Our boy is a TALKER, folks! Best money I ever spent (and got free parking to boot!).

  • sma11ie

Too cute. Good for him for speaking for facing his fears and 50 minutes. That’s awesome. I’m very impressed.

  • ozarka

David is adorable in that MTV video, especially the way he put on that sweater so as not to mess up his hair.

Here’s the link to Jim’s new blog that goes with that video…
    http://newsroom.mtv.com/2009/10/26/david-archuleta-christmas-sweater/

Although David knew we were going caroling for the shoot, I’m not so sure he knew it involved props and a specific wardrobe. His defeated “Christmas … sweaters …” says it all. (Note the desperation in my voice mere nanoseconds after he sounded less-than-enthused.)

  • ozarka

I knew he would be speaking at this thing, but I had no idea that he himself was the KEYNOTE speaker! That is amazing and so wonderful. This is my favorite part of the article

At one point during the speech, he turned to Hatch to ask how much time he had left. “I tend to ramble, that’s the dangerous thing,” Archuleta admitted. “And it’s not just rambling, it’s like ‘what is this kid talking about?’”

Several fans at the back of the room shouted “sing, sing.” “I’m not done speaking yet,” Archuleta replied with shy confidence, drawing a roar of laughter.

  • houstonrufus

Some really amazing details coming out about David’s talk. Sounds like David spoke and sang wonderfully well.

  • spencer

Wow, there are alot of people there. Im sure he was nervous as heck (I know I would’ve been). Yes, good for him for facing his fear of public speaking. Might I add, he looks very handsome in those pics.

  • HappyDaisy

1:27 of that Christmas sweater video, Archie responds to Jim’s “gonna make you sweat” with “Ehveryboddy Daannce Now!” Perfectly on key, of course. Love it. This guy knows music!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b714Wi4CDsQ

Love his musical approach to life. Cool when he breaks into song snippets like this.

Beautiful photos at the Deseret News link. Thanks MJ!

  • TrudyFOD

David Archuleta is priceless! I heard he gave an inspirational speech about his musical journey. I feel so honored to be one of his fans. Wish I could have been there to hear him speak … and to hear him sing acapella. His song “O Holy Night” from his Christmas from the Heart is amazing!

  • TrudyFOD

Oh yeah…and he looked gorgeous! :-)

  • ggdoorsfan

this Abravanel Hall where he spoke is where he will be kicking off his tour in support of the ”christmas from the heart” cd… picture 4 of 7… it’s looks gorgeous…

He looks good…I would like to know what he said in that conference… and the mtv video is funny, he didn’t want to mess up his hair while putting on the sweater =)

  • abms

From the tweets I have read of the people who were in attendance today at the Utah Women’s Conference, David gave an inspiring speech and even sang an a capella verse of O Holy Night. Standing ovation ensued. Job well done David!!!

  • frogcooke

here’s a recap from newangel who went to the conference:

“1. He wore a suit!!!!!!!! With sneakers (navy and white). White shirt and black tie (I think we’ve seen it somewhere before).
Hair= AI spiky and perfect. Glowing skin…the usual. Smiling almost the entire 50 min. There was an AUDIBLE gasp from the audience when Sen. Hatch introduced him. You could hear & feel it. People leaned forward as he came out. He waved and smiled. HE STOOD ON A STEP TO B tall enough to reach the mic. Oh my heck!!! It was the cutest, funniest thing. He didnt seem to mind. He brought several pages of notes, but we think he didn’t end up using them much. He rambled, but also managed to give a coherent talk and cover several important points such as facing your fears by starting small and just getting started (like public speaking for him), being honest with yourself (he has to drag himself out of bed sometimes to go workout, but he doesn’t want to lie to himself ( cuz lying to yourself leads to lying to others–not good). He talked about writing in his journal and how he’s as proud of that as he is of all the touring and big career stuff that’s happened this year. Helps him organize his thoughts & helps him see how far he’s come. He is grateful for all the scrapbooks people have made and the articles people give him, but he also wants to make sure his kids hear his story from his view too. (He said KIDS!!!!)

Let’s see…what else? He told about how he got started singing. It blew my mind that some in the audience didn’t know about his paralyzed vocal cord (it was a much older crowd in general…)– like, you heard gasps when he told about it. Hello? Are we in UT or not? He told about when he won Star Search and he felt so bad for the girl who lost (b/c she was upset and crying), that HE cried and then the chaperone in charge of him had to try & tell him it would be OK for that girl and then the adult lady started crying!!!! EPIC!!!! He felt like he didn’t deserve to win in the semifinals and the 2 girls competing were better, so he resolved to do his best so they would look good (not sure how to phrase it– looking for a sports analogy. Kind of like you want the team that beats you to go on and win so you don’t look bad for losing to a lame team?? You know? Anyway, yeah. That bit was awesome. He didn’t talk about AI at all (running out of time by then) except to say that he prayed about trying out and although he didn’t think God would care about some 10th grade kid kneeling down in his room, he got an answer and felt really strongly that that was what he was supposed to do.

Archie looks so handsome. Very impressed that he was able to speak in front of that large crowd.

    Loved this comeback from him:

….. “Several fans at the back of the room shouted ‘sing, sing.’ ‘I’m not done speaking yet,’ Archuleta replied with shy confidence, drawing a roar of laughter.”……..

Shows he can think quickly on his feet and keep it light-hearted, even at an event like that.

  • karenkid

Nice to see him growing and getting better at everything. He’s not one to be content and sit around, that’s for sure. Really happy for his success there today.

  • LCT

Frogcooke, thanks so much for sharing the wonderful update on the conference! I’m amazed at how much he’s matured since AI! This boy is no longer a kid, but a young gentleman who is slowly but steadily on the rise and people better be prepared! WOW! The public has been exceptionally hard on him but why? Because he’s different? he’s polite, kind, humble, compassionate? What’s wrong with that? I have to say I find him so refreshingly unique!

  • pam05

Thanks frogcooke for the recap of newangel’s :D David is a crowd magnet for sure, love this young man. Yep he’s the real deal alright “-) He is just beaming with joy in those pic’s from the Womens Conf. and gorgeous I might add. The MTV video was hilarious and too short lol. David is such a joy to watch lol :D

  • heidijoy

David is so refreshing, genuine and inspirational. He looks fabulous and shows how pushing yourself pays off. What a joy to behold. ……and his visit to MTv just keeps on giving. ha! ha!

  • heidijoy

David is so refreshing, genuine and inspirational. He looks fabulous and shows how pushing yourself pays off. What a joy to behold. ……and his visit to MTv just keeps on giving. ha! ha!

  • CindyM

He’s cute. I wonder if he’s going to stay so young looking throughout his life. Kind of like Ralph Macchio or Michael J. Fox, boyish throughout their careers.

  • abbysee

Ahhh, where do I start. Okay, he looks magnificent. I love the idea of the spiffy suit and sneakers. That’s David! I am impressed that he spoke for 50 minutes and didn’t really cover much of his stint on idol. That speaks volumes to me. David is defining himself, what a novel idea. I also love his self deprecating humor doesn’t mean that he isn’t sure of himself. There’s some serious steel in this young man. I am so glad he doesn’t limit himself to things that just make him look good, but has some substance as well. I am so proud of him. Oh, and did I say he looked marvelous? :-)

  • IdolThoughts

    He’s precious.

  • brewster

David Archuleta is a talented and gifted singer. With his perpetual smile and positive nature, he spreads joy and happiness where ever he goes. I have had the good fortune to meet David, and without a doubt, he is one of the kindest and one of the most compassionate persons I know. He may not fit the “image” of what most people look for in their pop icons, but for me, he is number one.

  • kimk

I am just so proud of David.
Being shy myself I can not even imagine going up there and no less slaying the crowd and yikes before such distinguished guests.

  • ggdoorsfan

There’s some serious steel in this young man.

by the truckload… i still chuckle at folks who underestimate him due to his age and youthful appearance, the manner in which he speaks, [insert whatever] hahaha… there’s grit and substance to this young man, and i’m beginning to think the good looks and the shyness are perfect foils for that steel that lies beneath… those mistaking his inherent kindness for weakness are playing a fool’s game…

  • frogcooke

    I’d be petrified to speak in front of people.. much less for 50 minutes. @_@;

  • trezoc

His career path may be atypical…but WOW he sure pops up EVERYWHERE. It was a bit puzzling to me how he would fit into the Woman’s Conference….young and less than worldly….but he makes very wise choices and seem to always win over the crowd. It’s embarassing how much i like this kid. Off topic but he’s totally workin’ the shiny suit and spiky hair :) Thanks to this site for keeping us in the know!!!

  • frogcooke

    Jim commented on his blog:

Haha. Glad you guys are enjoying these Archuleta videos. We’ll be posting another “outtake” moment tomorrow, where David and I briefly talk about Allison Iraheta. But keep the clicks coming so my boss lets me post more!! :)

  • KathyH

Oh, David. How on earth do you know at 18 things that I’m still trying to learn at double-18-plus? I’d have loved to have been at the conference — but I appreciate the article and photos, MJ.

On another note… I’ ve finally bought Christmas form the Heart…I’m loving every bit of it … <3

Thanks to the sweet person that helped me buy it… :))))

How old is David? He looks like he’s about 10-years-old in that pic. lol

  • frogcooke

Awesome that you now have the cd :)

    He’ll be 19 in december

  • cmom

Thos lucky people at the conference getting to hear acapella David. Well, I finally get to go to a VIP (San Francisco) so if I am lucky I will get to hear some singing up close! I really, really want to hear him sing “Crazy” which I realize he sang in VIP’s before but maybe if I get to ask a question, I can ask for it. Just really hearing the song that made Simon say “that was incredible” and made Paula and Randy bow to him after the end of Crazy in Hollywood week makes me want to hear it in person myself. (annoying that Idol never let us see or hear that audition song prior to Heaven.)

  • casey718

Interesting gig for Archie….but hey, if your conference can book David Archuleta, who cares that it’s totally off-topic?? heh.. I kid, of course. I actually love that he’s been able to tackle his ‘fear of public speaking’ and shine at this occasion and at other public appearances.

  • Stephdanielle

David is so genuine, just absolutely amazing! He’s truly an inspiration to all of us and we are just so incredibly proud of him! David’s the best, there’s no one else like him!

  • carolinacharms

This performance—the speech and the a capella verse—just goes to show you that true star power isn’t simply defined by slickness, media savvy, articulation, calculation or edge.

No, in this case, true star power is defined by rock-solid character, humility, genuine ebullience, joie de vivre, honesty, courage, warmth, unvarnished charm and God-given talent, galore.

  • tinafea

Glad to hear that Archie is finally able to speak in complete sentences now. He’s come a long way in that department since his time on Idol.

  • cmom

I have said it before – what David has is charisma.

  • sanduskyday

I don’t think David looks like he’s 10 or 12 or even 16. In my opinion he looks youthful, but he is growing into his age very well. He has matured so much in the last 6 months and his looks are maturing very nicely. I sometimes think our perception of what a teen looks like is distorted by all the 20-somethings playing teenagers on shows like Glee and Gossip Girl.

I am so happy to know that David is challenging and overcoming his fears and is presenting a shining example along the way.

  • frogcooke

ah since this is being put around everywhere.. may as well put it here too.

“Download david’s speech here: http://bit.ly/12yad8. Thank you newangel!!!”

he’s a tad nervous in the very beginning but he gets rolling after that. It actually pretty funny in parts.

    It’s 52 minutes long.

  • ggdoorsfan

Glad to hear that Archie is finally able to speak in complete sentences now. He’s come a long way in that department since his time on Idol.

it’s all about growth and showing progression over a period of time – he has shown distinct and very measurable growth in many areas, personally and professionally… where there is no growth, stagnation or decay usually follows, and as is evident with david, he’s all about the forward momentum… how lucky we are as fans to bear witness to such a delightful work in progress :-)

  • carolinacharms

I sometimes think our perception of what a teen looks like is distorted by all the 20-somethings playing teenagers on shows like Glee and Gossip Girl.

    ITA.

However, he does look young for his age. He’s small, so he’ll always appear younger than he is. Always.

  • ggdoorsfan

Who’s talking at the next Women’s Conference? Justin Beiber?

hahahah studio57 – these two are not even comparable, but that’s another story for another day, heh… david’s message today of following your dreams, in spite of the challenges and obstacles one faces is a universal one, an inspirational one suitable for any audience – … though 18, he does know a little somethin’ somethin’ about overcoming challenges, ie his vocal chord paralysis, so in that vein, what he had to say fit the occasion…

  • cmom

“Who’s talking at the next Women’s Conference? Justin Beiber?

Ageism at its best. I always thought the young had a lot to say (Brian Wilson? Paul McCartney….) Some amazingly insightful things come out of the young. How quickly we forget. After all, the founder’s of Apple were working on their computer projects in the highschool library (where my mom was librarian). Young?

  • ozarka

I have said it before ‘“ what David has is charisma.

ITA. He has the IT factor. Simon Cowell recognized it very early on. He said so after David’s “Shop Around” performance, “When you’ve got It, you’ve got It.”

a tweet from someone named Richard Paul Evans, an attendee at today’s conference…

So I spoke to about a thousand women today then went to sign books. They put me at a table with David Archuletta (American Idol) . Big mistake. Never sit next to a bigger draw, eh? :-) . He asked me what we were supposed to be doing. ‘Just sign, David. Just sign.’ Years ago I was at a duel signing with Charles Frazier (Cold Mountain) the night he won the National Book Award. I felt like chopped liver.’

  • abbysee

Big mistake. Never sit next to a bigger draw, eh?

    That’s funny!

Okay, I listened to the speech. Once he got over his initial fears he had them eating out of the palm of his hand. He had a cohesive message, and he definitely could relate to what he was saying. He is also funny as hell. I wish I had been there. Oh Holy Night was amazing. I am impressed all around by David.

Archuleta wows with words and song

David Archuleta had the jitters Monday as he took the microphone at the 25th annual Utah Women’s Conference ‘” podium-clutching, leg-shaking, nervous-laugh-inducing jitters.

He would, he admitted several words into his first-ever keynote address, rather be singing.

“A David Archuleta speech for me is like an oxymoron,” said the Murray High School graduate, who got his start as a finalist on Fox’s “American Idol.” “I’ve never been good at speaking.”

Nonetheless, the 18-year-old pop star managed to enchant ‘” however clumsily ‘” the several hundred mostly middle-aged but still giddy-to-see-David-Archuleta-in-real-life conference-goers.

“I just think he’s adorable,” said LeAnn Hafen, 53, who drove from Santa Clara to attend the Abravanel Hall conference, which was sponsored by U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch. “He’s so sincere and he tries so hard.”

Archuleta centered his remarks on doing one’s best despite doubts, fears or setbacks.

    OHN from the conference:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnxRNpmRPto

gonna be captain obvious here… this young man can saaaaaaaaang… he is becoming the master of the impromptu acapella performance that never fails to just leave you just amazed… and stunned… after you think you’ve heard it all from him… this is part of his appeal, and draw for me – david live…. you never know what you’re in for, he will always find a way to make whatever he’s singing sound fresh, new and somewhat different… going to see him up in baltimore on dec 15th at the lyric opera house, and i’m just as excited to hear him sing live this 5th time as i was the 1st… i want that to never change…

  • ghl

Two different appearances for David. One, on MTV in the entertainment business. The other in the inspiration driven conference. Maintaining who he is always works for him.

If Justin Bieber has that steel like strong character, remains strong without negotiating today’s sex driven crappy music and is invited by a senator as a keynote speaker, I will give my utmost respect for him. haha. Maybe even buy his album, too. LOL.

  • ghl

Did I say he is so adorable? Adorable, respectful by a lot of women (and more men are in the progress). You know at least he is not CHEAP.

  • houstonrufus

Beautiful performance of OHN. GG, I know what you mean. :)

  • lovemymatthew

Enjoyed all the reports and comments about David’s speech at the Women’s conference. I am so proud of David. He is becoming more and more handsome everyday, I didn’t think that is possible anymore but he is. He looked so handsome and looked luminous., glowing. Wow ,wow, wow……

  • gemzone

Was there today 3rd row center. This young man might be small in stature but he is a GIANT among men… He might of rambled alot at first but he transforms into this other person when he is passionate about what he is talking about. Same thing happens when he sings! Oh how he is an inspiration to us all. Thank You David!!

I have issues with any “Woman’s” conference that has “first ladies” as their big draws. David Archuleta may have been the best thing there and to me that fact makes the entire thing a joke. Not saying anything against David…just saying that when your biggest draw is a support person, how can you even call yourself a “woman’s” conference…unless women are only supposed to support their man…

  • Sarah Quipayco

So when is he coming out……………………..with another single?

  • ozarka

We’re hoping his next single will be something from his Christmas album since it will be a while before his 3rd album comes out. There’s no word on it yet or which song it will be. It’s too early anyway to release a Christmas song on the radio. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Although I cannot see myself ever attending a Women’s Conference, I wouldn’t write off the whole experience based on one speaker. Usually these events offer women a chance to network and attend workshops on a variety of topics like health, family and business. As for David’s appearance, I watched both segments posted here and granted, the kid is rough around the edges, but I was honestly impressed with his thought process and his use of the language. Considering he was basically unable to speak in front of an audience a little over a year ago, he’s come a long way. There is a lot behind those beautiful eyes.

  • gingerly

I’m speaking from experience of a woman’s festival where there’s nary a man for a week (unless he’s sucking out the porta-potties in the middle of the night). This festival has been going on for 35 years. Women go onto the land each year, set up the plumbing, build the stages (four of them), lighting and support tents, set up the kitchens, cook for 3,500 to 10,000 other women. The logistics are amazing and we don’t need Orrin Hatch for a bit of it.

I didn’t write it off based on David. I wrote it off based on the entire premise that a first lady cares more about women than her husband’s latest candidacy. Sorry I come from a different place in this whole thing.

  • ggdoorsfan

yeah … won’t be the first nor the last time the ”supporting” act, as it were, upstaged the ”headliner”, hehe… demi lovato and some others may know a little something about that, heh. as hard as he tries to keep that forceful and magnetic personality on the low key, i guess its just not working… ”sigh”… dude is just an attention hog i tell ya, and by golly something needs to be done about it before it gets out of hand :)

I wonder if there were any Democrats there. (Just sayin’ it’s quite an overwhelmingly Republican line-up.)

That’s great for David, but I wonder what else was on the agenda?

I also think that, after this experience, David should plan on having to sing if he’s on a podium. He sounded great as always, but how long did it take him to decide what to sing. I bet that there was an upright piano in the wings right off that stage too.

  • ggdoorsfan

dunno how or why the political makeup of this crowd matters… not sure the same questions were raised regarding the number of republicans in attendance when he appeared and sang at some of the obama inauguration festivities – namely the latino gala… david wisely keeps his own counsel regarding these kind of things, as it should be… he’s an entertainer, and has not shown any desire or inclination to immerse himself in the tangled web of politics… the music business is political enough :D

  • JudyOhio

Funny, a little while back ago I was wondering what David would be doing after the Demi/David tour. I thought there would be a dry spell and he wouldn’t be seen much. Boy was “I” wrong! The guy has a Christmas album out, a Christmas album tour, is guesting on MTV, hanging out with Jim C. (who I’m a fan of btw), working on a new pop album, a speaking engagement. This guy amazes me……he never stops!!! And I enjoy about everything he does, lol…..I am such a fan!
