David Archuleta Says Goodbye Before He Leaves on Mormon Mission

David Archuleta bids an emotional goodbye to fans on the eve of his departure to go on a Mormon Mission. He’ll be off the grid for two years, completely, as he does spiritual work for the LDS in South America.

Aw. David. We are so going to miss your funny tweets, your beautiful talent and that sweet countenance of yours. Hope your time away is fulfilling and you come back to the wordly world with a new perspective.

Do you know who else is going to miss David? David Cook, who shared the top 2  with Archie in Season 7.  He wrote on twitter, “Everyone go show @DavidArchie some love. He leaves for his 2 year long mission tomorrow. Best wishes, Archie!”

    I gotta fess us, this video made me cry.  I have enjoyed being a fan of David’s since Idol.  It’s been a pleasure watching him grow up.  It’s been an even bigger pleasure listening to his beautiful voice and watch his adorable vlogs.  David is a special guy, there is a light about him, and an innocence that is refreshing.  No pretense with him.  My two youngest daughters are big fans.  They listen to The Other Side of Down still!  Well so do I, I have my own personal Archie playlist that will never get old.  I am also looking forward to what he has in store for us while he is away.  Two years will fly by….I hope.

    I hope this mission is exactly all he wants it to be.  I must admit, cynic that I am, it made perfect sense that he needs to do this.  Godspeed David.

    I don’t think this little guy has a clue as to what a blessing he is to so many people. There are not enough people like David in the world. He really is one in a million.  Godspeed, little David.  You make the world a better place.

    Just got home.  Tried to stay really busy today as I knew that a vlog was coming and I needed to work up to it gradually.  Just always amazes me at what a thoughtful young man David is.  He really is an amazing roll model for not just young people but all of us.  He looks so young, but he is so much more mature in many ways than many of us older folk.  He is going to be an outstanding missionary.  Two years seem like a long time, but many artist take 2 years off to do an album, have a family, etc. David has left us 2 albums, and I have heard that they are working on getting a DVD of the minii-series available with English translation.  I believe their is a Forevermore video, and there may even me a behind the scenes video of him working on his US CD.  There were 2 photographers who worked with David last week, so we may get some pictures, too.  It still is pretty amazing how much David has succeeded in doing without promotion from a recording label and with no airplay.  Talent and hard work can make all the difference.

    Very sad to see David A. leave the spotlight for 2 years especially with all the recent excitement of the miniseries, the OPM album and the upcoming U.S. album. However, thanks to David’s hard work over the past few months, I think fans will have plenty of David stuff to keep them busy over the next 2 years.  Sony and Ivory Records in the Philippiness are only starting their promo of the Forevermore CD.  Thanks to the label’s push, songs from the CD are being picked up by big pop stations in the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia.  Who knows what else the label has planned for the CD.  I still hope they find a way to distribute it in the U.S. via iTunes.
     
    I really respect how David handled his departure for a two year mission.  It would have been pretty easy to milk the two year mission for lots of free publicity or media attention. Much like the many artists who are constantly announcing their endless “farewell” or retirement tours or celebrities who use personal tragedy to get on the covers of tabloids to promote their projects.  But he never did.  Just a low keep goodbye vlog for his fans.  Just really impressed with this guy.

    I have to admire anyone who takes his beliefs seriously, which David obviously does.   I wish him good luck on his mission.

    David (Archie!) has always been so sincere, one of his finest qualities.

    The tweet from the other David (Cookie!), is kind and heartwarming.

    Those two made Season 7 mighty fun and special.

    David’s it isn’t goodbye vlog.  It’s been an emotional day, happy and sad simultaneously lol Smiling through tears.  My admiration for David’s character and humility just grows and grows.  David’s farewells to his family, friends and fans …period.  Wishing David many blessings during his time of service for him and those he serves.

    So proud and I will definitely be actively supporting David during his time away.  New music, videos, behind the scenes stuff, Nandito Ako with english subtitles and who knows what more.  Kari (met her a couple of times is absolutely wonderful for David, professional, caring, smart, organized, knows her stuff) will be handling his mail making sure it gets to him (I will be writing him :) and twitter updates from the man himself.

    I thought I was going to be sad today but David’s video and the I’ll Be Back photo Kari posted were just perfect and made me calm and hopeful. I feel David in my heart. And wow David made so much stuff for us in the last 10 weeks – filmed the 5 week miniseries, 2 albums, a music video and 3 photoshoots (not to mention all of his Asia performances, mall shows and press conferences the PH and Singapore fans were so nice to stream live) – all in 10 weeks. What an amazing guy.  I will miss him bad but we can do this.  BTW for anyone who doesn’t know, his DavidArchie is his correct and only twitter – I hope you follow him and help get him that last 50,000 to 1 million.

    Probably you guys have watched this video from fans all around the world.  But worth to post it again.  I have never seen a young man who inspires all walks of life at such a young age by just being who he is. Wished Cook were there.

    I know David did not leave with a lot of fanfare but it looks like his story has been picked up by the mainstream media. AP did a story earlier today which has been picked up by some 120 news outlets. Fox stations are also doing stories. Huffington Post has a story. Access Hollywood has a story.

    Can’t say I’m surprised by the interest. Popular Idol Finalist/popstar/teen idol suspends career for 2 years to pursue LDS mission. The story could write itself. It’s particularly timely when you consider that the country may have it’s first Mormon president ever. Downside is that the more coverage there is, the less likely it will be that David will be able to serve his mission in complete anonymity. Also, while the coverage had been positive today, I’m sure the negative stories will come. Will be very interesting to track the course of this story.

    MJ, there isn’t a LIKE button big enough for the kind words you said about David.   I was doing fine until I read your post and now I have watery eyes.  I’ll blame it on “allergies.”  =)

    I just had a chance to see David’s farewell video. He is so humble. It brings back so many memories of the last four years. God speed to David!

    Thank you MJ for you awesome write up and for including the picture of David holding the sign.  That has so much significance to his fanbase.  Had me smiling thru my tears :)

    I’ve received my Forevermore CD!  It is amazing.  David’s voice is flawless.  No gimmicks, autotunes, just the voice.

    I’ve had dozens of google alerts in the last couple of days picking up on David starting his mission worldwide.  It was announced at one of the pieces done on the news in Utah that David will  be in Chile, South America.  David has 3 fan sites being operated for him there.  But everything I’ve heard is that his privacy will be respected and Chile is not a small place.

    Thanks MJ.. David will be missed. He has filled a void in many peoples lives with his music and generous personality. Each time I’ve met him , he was always polite and lovable. David always makes you feel special and worthy. His kindness and genuine heart of gold are a joy to behold. He lights up a room and fills it with joy.
