I remember when I was a teenager bying these CD-singles, and even if they are not so practical to play on a stereo (you are bound to listen to the same couple of songs for 1 hour or changing the CD every 15minutes), you own something, a piece of paper and plastic, with its own cover, sometimes a little book and rare songs. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s like a collector, like these little images you pin on a book.

Nattevakt, I think a lot of people agree with you. I see a lot of people posting that when they really like an album/artist they will buy the pyhsical CD (or even the vinyl. You can sometimes order those directly from the label’s site). CD quality is way better than the quality you get from iTunes. Plus, you get the liner notes which I love.

But now, the artist can also make some money from “collectors” who don’t want the entire CD, but wouldn’t mind owning a song or two. If people like you continue to buy your 5 albums a year and also pick up 10 or so iTunes singles, the music biz is ahead of the game.

I must admit I do like my iPod. When I just want to listen to some tunes while I’m planting the garden, it’s great to have hundreds of songs at my finger-tips so I don’t have to keep changing/finding CDs I want to play. Plus, it’s easier to carry to work and I don’t have to shuffle CDs back and forth. So, I see it as the right tool for the right job.

I appreciate where you are coming from. I have the same problem with digital cameras. All the photos are just endless bits in the computer, rarely making it to the album. And people just snap away like crazies, so the pictures have less meaning (why not take a picture of my shoe?) On the one hand, you get a lot more creative pictures (no more endless pictures of little Johnny standing in front of such-and-such), but you also get a lot more crap. And I still think the depth and warmth of film is better than that of digital cameras. But, I still own a digital camera. On a recent trip, I brought both the digital camera and a film camera. When I took the 5 rolls of film in to be developed, everybody who worked in the store came to see the crazy lady who had so many rolls of film. I used to bring in 20 rolls of film to that same store and they wouldn’t bat an eye. LOL. Times, they are a changing.

Singles have been around for a long time. Back in the days of 45s, they sold a lot of those things and they probably effected albums sales as well. Having a single out might cause people not to buy the album, but at least they are buying something.

Hi Kristen, that’s true that singles are almost as old as the music business, and I understand the financial gain to make people buy them instead of “steal” them. The problem I have with digital dowloads is the “message” that delivers. Songs are now just digist buried inside your computer, among others digist, so many different type of songs that people barely listen to…

Hell I even remember the 1st vinyl I got when I was 5 (ahh Ulysses 31)… I bet nobody remember their 1st i-Tunes purchase in 10 years…
And then comes the album: why people nowadays will bother bying the CD when it’s merely just a gathering of digits/songs that you can buy 1$ or find in the net? But if you make the album (the materiel object) worth bying it (superior quality, with a DVD, a special cover…), and value music for its artistical value rather than its consumable value, then you can forget the downloads…
I myself don’t buy that many CDs a year, maybe 5, it’s like you said a commitment process. But I always buy special albums who cost more than 25 $ but which are worth keeping it… And I will not exange these CDs again 25 i-Tunes songs… And unfortunatly, I presume DA or DC albums will not contain any special covers or even a DVD *sight*

How long would it be after that date will the rest of the tracks be available for purchase?

They are normally released together. They’ll release every track for sale when the album goes on sale. That’s why you’ll sometimes see a bunch of songs from a single artist appear on the charts (e.g. Kellie and Jennifer both had two songs in the top 200 this week).

Now, the one exception is bonus tracks. If there is a bonus track exclusive to iTunes, then you have to purchase the entire album to get that track. In the past, a lot of Idols put bonus tracks on their albums. Some will even have different bonus tracks at different sites (e.g. a bonus track for iTunes and one for WalMart).

After the album goes for sale, you can “complete your album” on iTunes which will sell the album at a discounted price (discounting for the singles you have already purchased). If you do that, the total and weekly albums sales will be incremented by one while the total single sales will be decremented by one (according to 2m at Pulse, it doesn’t affect the weekly numbers).

Little side topic here : I have to say I still have issues with i-Tunes and singles download in general. My theory is that the more i-Tunes singles you sell, the less album you sell (and not necessery vice versa).

Some in the music biz will agree with this. There are some artists who will not sell individual tracks from their albums. There are some that argue that the Album is going the way of the dodo because everybody is buying their albums a la carte. Concept albums are dead!

Meanwhile, others argue that it’s making albums better because now there is an incentive to make an album full of quality songs instead of two hits and 10 filler songs. Concept albums will be the norm!

The thing is, iTunes serves a very useful purpose. It allows artists to get paid for their songs. Prior to iTunes and other music services, the downloading of pirated songs was rampant. It still is, but there are a lot of people who are willing to pay for a song so at least they are getting money from those people (and then there are the people who don’t want to get a virus). If a song (e.g. prior to album release) is not available for sale, even those who are likely to pay for music might justify downloading it illegally because that is the only way to get it. We are starting to see a foreshortening of radio releases to iTunes releases. Before, artists wanted to make sure that they did well on the charts and would wait 4 to 6 weeks. Now, they want to make sure they get paid and release to iTunes sooner (like a week or two…or in the case of Nickelback, the same day).

And, here is something I personally do. I find a lot of times I buy a single when it is extremely unlikely I would ever have purchased the CD. Maybe I only like one song from the artist. Or sometimes, it’s because the song is a fun song I like, but I don’t think I’ll love it forever. For $1, I get the song. What’s one dollar? Where I live, it’s literally change. I don’t think all too much about an impulse buy of $1. When it gets to $10-$18, I start asking myself if I really want it or is it just going to be a dust collector. No dust on iTunes.

Just my opinion.

DA is so likable and accessible, and most of all, so normal, so unlike a celebrity, talking about haircut and moving stuff in the bedroom (Jason is like that too) So refreshing and I think it’s going to carry him far.

Putting finishing touch to the album? yay! When do we get to hear the preview of the album? Isn’t that a week before the album drops? So not a long wait now!
