David singing in Spanish… ah… heavenly and really hope he does a Spanish CD!

  • frogcooke

lol werent expecting two songs, since he was saying he would be singing Como La Flor. But then he didnt sing it at sound check and sang No Me Queda Mas instead. So we were wondering. Guess he got to sing twice. heh.

  • ggdoorsfan

he just fits into and sings many styles of music so well, showing respect for them in the way he keeps delivering great performances when performing them. it’s a versatility and facility that makes whatever he sings, at any occasion or given moment such a thrill – from pop, salsa, dance, rnb, spanish, patriotic, ballads, mid and uptempo… his talent for lack of a better word is just amazing. i love to see and hear him singing in spanish, love to see the spanish speaking market and potential fans being exposed to and loving him, love the thought of a spanish cd in the works, and love that he was able to be a part of this tribute to selena – it was an honor for him to be asked to participate… he returned that honor by doing her legacy proud.

ggdoorsfan-I agree I always though DA could sing pop music or even verge onto semi-classical or mature music. Sort of like a Gosh Groban that does both.I heard DA also sings in Spanish which is quite a good move and I hope he tries different styles as well.

his versatility is so… it’s still early, the words aren’t flowing as smoothly as i’d like, but all i can think of is amazing. it’s all my caffeine deprived brain can come up with at the moment, lol… he is giving us a lot to look forward to, god willing, going ever forward into his career. imo, he has so many options, so many different directions to explore careerwise and musically it is really like an adventure, as well as a great musical pleasure for me, and i’m sure many fans to watch him evolve and grow… it may not always be smooth sailing, but i like seeing him going into new and unchartered waters with his talent. i guess i’m foolish enough to believe he has what it takes to rise to the challenge. imo, the idol experience for him was a great platform and launching pad for exposure and visibility… in hindsight, i’m beginning to process and absorb the thought that it really showcased only a miniscule amount of his true versatility and musical talent… i think we’re seeing, in the pop releases and performances like this, what was there all along – we got a glimpse or two of it during his season, and remember he was very, very, very good in his season, but it was constrained to fit into the idol format… i hope he continues exploring and taking his talent into new and challenging and unexpected directions… like all artists should do.

Whoaa that was beautiful. I feel his emotion. David needs to record a spanish album. He needs great songs though to penetrate that market, he already got the voice and the personality to get noticed.

And if that happens, a duet with Allison is sure not far behind. Ahhh, make it happen Jive!

  • KathyH

The duet with Allison would be cool! I know little Spanish and can’t follow the lyrics, but David sounded good here. I’m sure he was excited and honored, and his mother must’ve been so happy and proud.

  • Tess

Since I knew nothing about this award or show I googled it.

Wow….that was really beautiful!! I’m very happy that he got a standing ovation…Lupe must have been very proud! David really has a beautiful voice no matter what he is singing…he pours his heart and soul into it.

  • houstonrufus23

Can’t really add anything but that I loved it. He simply sounds gorgeous singing in Spanish. Can’t wait to hear more.

  • ggdoorsfan

moving over some the tweets pouring out of the tejano awards last night… i think it’s a good representation from fan, casual fan, non fan and new fan about david’s performance… chat forums for selena and other spanish speaking music sites were lit up after david performance… they were loving the respect he showed her, and the culture, in giving these two performances… seeing the writer of ‘como la flor’ duet w/david on it also was a great topic of chatter.

who is pete astudillo, david’s duet partner on ‘como la flor’?

Pedro “Pete” Astudillo (born 1963 in Laredo, Texas) is a Mexican American songwriter.

Astudillo was one of the leaders of the Tejano music scene, and from an early age followed mariachi and conjunto music. He began his musical career as a backup vocalist for the queen of Tejano, Selena, as a member of Selena y Los Dinos. Astudillo also sang two duets with her—1989’s “Amame, Quirereme” and 1992’s “Siempre Estoy Pensando en Ti”, both of which were nominated for Vocal Duo of the Year at the Tejano Music Awards. He co-wrote some of Selena’s number one hits such as “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom”, “Amor Prohibido”, and the BMI award-winners “La Carcacha”, “Qué Creias”, and “Como la Flor.” Astudillo also wrote the song “Estúpido Romántico” that was sung and made popular by Grupo Mazz.

  • Sydia

Oh Archie what a voice! I love this kid almost as much as my Cook. I wish that he would do a CD in spanish. Sigh. El Triste would sound phenomonal. It is a FAMOUS ballad done by Jose Jose in the 70′s. Arch would kill it.

  • ggdoorsfan

thanks mhel – i have been seeing various reports of it beginning to make it onto the countdowns in the philippines and malaysia – it’s good to see the fervor the fans have for him is still going strong… i really hope he and his team find a way to get back there for them – they have been staunch supporters, and the reception he received on the last visit there was great. he has a lot of latin american countries and fans who have also been patiently waiting to see him in person, as well as fans in the uk who saw him during the mcfly tour… he’s going to need to clone himself to keep up with the demand to see him… it’s all good ;)

  • Tess

as well as fans in the uk who saw him during the mcfly tour

Did David release an album in the UK or was it just his import? And did he chart on the UK charts with his single(s) or album? I’ve always been curous how his opening for McFly impacted his sales in the UK. Other than his McFly tour itself I didn’t hear much about the UK’s reaction to him.

  • frogcooke

Crush and the album was never pushed in the UK, he did the mcfly tour and that was about it other than one appearance on a tv show there. There was nothing else.

  • ggdoorsfan

hi tess – i guess you would be outta the loop somewhat, since now you are occupied with the exploits of another runner up, but that’s life, lolol… let’s see… his debut was released in the uk, but there was no substantial promo by jive to really have it make headway on any charts there. i think jive played it safe the first time out, but i hope this go around, with his profile in the industry still pretty high, and lots of anticipation from all corners to hear the second pop cd that they exert more effort in giving him a good push and promo in the uk w/the 2nd cd.

by all accounts, he was very well received by the press and uk fans on the mcfly tour. there was a lot of chatter about him on their official site, lots of visits exchanged among sites between the mcfly fans and the archies… they have some pretty rabid fans too, and he seemed to go over very well with their audience. i have seen a lot of uk message board activity about him spring up, and stay up, in the uk in the year since, so if i had to go off that, there is interest in the market for him – it’s up to jive to get on the stick, and give him the push and promo needed. i really think david’s success on the uk tour, and in the philippines and singapore and malaysia, as well as the spanish market opening up to him bode well for future international success. he really has no need to rush into that right now – he’s 19, a good age for a pop star, so there really shouldn’t be a rush or frenzy to establish a large international presence all at once… if his future releases hit, and resonate, it will organically take place, but jive will also be called upon to give him the promotional pushes in the uk, latin america, asia and other countries with strong fan presence that have expressed great interest in seeing him. my biggest hope is there is some serious long term and long range planning taking place behind the scenes to facilitate this… being 19 in this case is a boon, and an advantage… rome wasn’t built in a day, or so they say, and david’s path to get to where he’s going won’t be either. it’s a process, a journey, and i’m in it for the long haul. ;) hope that helps…

from the vaults – a review of the show at the manchester apollo ;)

Live Review: David Archuleta @ Manchester Apollo

    Monday 11th May 2009 – 11:00:00

David Archuleta shares his name with a Japanese-based hip-hop vocalist and middleweight kickboxing champion. Amusingly, the two couldn’t be farther apart in terms of talent. The dulcet tones of the 18 year old achieved runner up the in seventh season of American Idol, going on to debut at number two on the Billboard 200 chart, then selling over 690,000 copies of his album in the US alone.

Tonight though, Archuleta managed to shake the trend of being number two, and be support for McFly on their UK tour. Usually host to events heavier in nature, the Manchester Apollo was transformed into a venue full to the brim of screaming teenage girls, while their dads waited in the car park.

Archuleta put on an impressive performance, showing no signs of any stage fright or shyness. The man who won over 42 million votes in American Idol clearly knows he has a talent, and shows it off well.
The entire performance is peppered with interaction with the crowd, reaching towards the front rows, and receiving the same back from hundreds of fans. Based on the reaction he’s getting on this side of the Atlantic, it can’t be long before we hear more from him.

    http://www.femalefirst.co.uk/music/reviews/Live+Review+David+Archuleta+Manchester+Apollo-8177.html

eta — the hi lite of the whole uk tour for me was when he played the hammersmith apollo, formerly the hammersmith odeon in london w/mcfly… that’s pretty hallowed musical ground… the likes of bowie, the beatles, and led zeppelin have put on some pretty legendary shows there, and to know david would be on the same stage these greats played and rocked, icons i’ve held near and dear for years was mindblowing… especially bowie, since he famously put on a series of farewell concerts there back in the day… it didn’t get any better than this for me, lol…

Go David, Selena would have loved u to I think. I was on one of her fans chat sites last night and it was sad there but happy to. There was requesting for Selena songs and everyone was excited for Selena wins. I listen to SBL again today and the song has so much more meaning to me today. To all Selena fans out there:

    There’s something ’bout love
    That tears you up
    Whoa oh oh oh
    You still believe
When the world falls down like rain
It’ll bring you to your knees
    There’s something ’bout love
    That breaks your heart
    Whoa oh oh oh
    But don’t give up
    There’s something ’bout loveee

Never in my life have I wished more that I could speak Spanish…

Sounds good no matter what language ;)

  • tibitibis

I really, really impressive with his performance of ‘No me queda mas’ , sing and sound good with mariachis is not an easy work, i need to said he did GREAT!! Wow !! , that was a very emotional , powerful and passional interpretation and very close to Selena version ….Good Job David .
Can’t wait for the spanish album, but i wonder what kind of spanish music they gonna choose to put on, Ballads Luis fonsi Type, or Christian Castro type, Montaner/Perales/Franco Devita kind of music,or more pop/rockish style like the groups from Spain/Chile…..idk David just proved to be the most versatile singer out there right now , he can do not only one special album but all what he want in the future :)
Anyway Congrats to David for that last night performance!! ;)

  • heidijoy

Yesterday was quite a day!! Knowing David was going to be singing Spanish@ the award show was exciting and following the tweets leading up to the event made it even more exciting. Waiting until the near end of the show made the anticipation even better. Then he sang and we waited for the recordings while reading so many positive comments including word of a STANDING O. Seeing the photos of the red carpet and of the event makes it even sweeter. David gave a fine performance and reviews have been positive. Proud of David who felt honored to pay tribute to Selena, her family.fans and fellow musicians.

  • goboywonder

Loving these great, high-profile opportunities David has been getting to coincide with the release of his new single and cd. What an honor to set with the Quintanilla family, sing ‘Como la Flor’ with Pete Astudillo who wrote the song, and receive a standing ovation after singing ‘No Me Queda Mas’ accompanied by a Mariachi band. So glad to hear that he wants to put out a Spanish cd in the near future. Poor David, he so versatile/gifted that before he finishes one project, we are rubbing our grubby little hands anticipating his next one. :) Just can’t get enough of The Voice.
