David Archuleta performs his single “Crush” on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

The band was a bit overpowering, and he seemed a bit nervous, but nevertheless–great job David!

Watch the Video after the JUMP…

  • caringgirl

Awww am I the first post…I thought archie was great. Hes grown up so much since idol. Hes quite the good looking young man too. I think he has a beautiful voice also. Good luck david..and 2 both davids.

  • gerreb

I thought Archie did a wonderful job. Crush is definitely not a “singer’s song” so he did great considering the difficulty, if that makes any sense at all, lol.
He may not have moved around the stage at all, but he sure bobbed his little heart out, lol.
And I have to agree with caringgirl that he has turned into quite a good looking young man. He still has that boyish good looks, but he’s starting to look more grown up.

  • proudmom

I agree with MJ that the band was somewhat overpowering. (I had difficulty hearing his voice over the instruments for much of the song.) David seemed a bit nervous, but he sang beautifully. Really nice. Wow this kid can sing!

  • khomphuong

damn, gotta love this guy’s voice..can’t wait too see his performance on NBC next Tuesday. Hope he is going to sing “you can” or TMH………and yeah, he was bit nervous. ha.ahahaa He looks tiny next to Jay Leno …ha.a.a.a.a ..

  • Jabkmc

Now he and Cook can trade “I thought I was gonna throw up” stories. LOL!

  • soundscene

Rockstar! He looked great with the band. The Tonight Show is notorious for messing up the sound mix, so I’m not surprised the band was a little loud. And dang, that song is hard to sing. But he did amazing for his first time on TV singing it.

  • hypertwink

I guess, this takes David back to his Idol days when Bandzilla would eat up the song. Heh. Despite that, I think he did well. Especially the restrained bopping around by the mike.

  • primeminister

    haha, no kidding Jabkmc.

Archie looked SO NERVOUS. The tempo was having a race with his heart rate, I’m sure. Although some parts were a little rough, this was a good first effort. Archie will only get better with time!

PS: The heart the cute bobbing thing he does.

  • E

I’m not going to complain about the sound, so happy to see him on tv again :D , great job David! love the rock “Crush”. this song is going to rock the tour now that David has a real band.

  • qbaloo

I think alot of David’s fans were feeling as nervous as he was leading up to that performance. I know I was. There must have been a collective nauseousness tonight! He did a great job…band was too loud but he still sounded great, loved the change ups and whaddaya know, Crush sounds even hotter with the rock edge!

Yeah, I think he will get better with each performance of this song too. I also think Julia Louis-Dreyfus is a fan, haha!

  • E

damn n I like this rock crush way better than the original, release it to Itune lol

  • violet4ever

Thanks! Best video and audio I have seen of the performance!

I think it could have used a bit less band or more mike but it sounded great for his first live performance with the band. And David sure remembers how to use those closeups! He looked great.

There should be another live recorded Crush on AOL Sessions Nov 10 or 11, along with My Hands, ALTNOY, Touch My Hand and You Can.

  • JudyOhio

I think he did a really good job tonight. I especially liked the ending.

  • clee1107

My DVR was broken. Dang it!
I just went to Youtube and watched it.
I’m not gonna say it was his best, but David did very well, especially with a band.
I really enjoyed his performance tonite.
His voice is getting deeper and better.
Yes. He got rock moves haha lol
Overall, David was great! I’m so proud of him.
btw….David was smoking HOT with a dark outfit!

  • Chiqui

I thought David Archuleta performed quite well. I recall him in AI delivering his songs almost always with his eyes closed when facing the camera – he didn’t do so too often in this performance. Also his stance looked more comfortable now — and of course his vocals still sound great. Good job, David.

  • bluejeans

I prefer this rocking version of Crush and he’s looking adorable AS USUAL. I like how he looked at the camera. He struggled during the verses though. A lot of mumble-cakes and seems to have a problem going low.

  • davidlove

Well, it was a good start for the press leading to the release. The kid is a star, and he’s working on his moves! I expect he will relax as he performs Crush a bit more. I’m not sure the guys in the band fit – they seemed so much older than him and needed a more youthful vibe. Using kids around his age as band members doesn’t seem to fit either, so I don’t know what the answer would be.
    Any thoughts……?

  • bluejeans

I wonder how old the guys in the band are. 30 plus? I don’t know. Maybe he could get band members who are in their 20s? Those guys looked a little weird standing behind Arch, but they sound pretty good.

  • qbaloo

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not sure the guys in the band fit – they seemed so much older than him and needed a more youthful vibe. Using kids around his age as band members doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t seem to fit either, so I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know what the answer would be.
    Any thoughtsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦?

Yeah, this is a tough one. I think if they go with a bunch of young guys for back up it starts to look too boy bandish. Some of the band did look alot older than David, but maybe that’s a good thing as it gives a seriousness to the overall presentation. Now admittedly, I didn’t spend too much time looking at the band but they seemed to be a mix of ages. I think they’ll be fine once we get used to seeing David with a band..it’s such a change to what we’re used to, a bit startling actually, so maybe that’s why it doesn’t seem to fit right now. If David likes them (and they sounded pretty good despite the bad Leno mix) I”m all for giving them a chance.

  • cruzceleste

I like ricking crush… I agree with everyone else the band was a little overpowering, but David was ok… he looked really hot (I`m not that old so I can said that with out being a cougar ;P)… poor guy he was so nervous at the end I wanted to give him a hug…
    Good Job Archie!!!!! Go Crush!!!!

  • E

I like David and the band. From David’s blogs, they seem to be getting along well. the band can stay. plus it’s something differen not having all youths. and David looks hot I must say! heartthrob heartbreaker.

  • Buderschnookie

OMG- Archie has totally been watching Cookie vids to improve his performances to not look so bland on stage. Clutching the microphone like it was a lifeline, bouncing up and down, staring longlingly into the camera! Once he calms down a little bit and practices some more he might just be a fine little stage presence.

I much preferred this rock vibe version with the live band- too bad the album one isn’t like this.

  • frogcooke

I love the rock vibe on it haha Then again i love my pop/rock. He sounds good on the pop/rock vibe stuff too. Well he sounds good on just about anything hahaha

  • frogcooke

lol if you look up david on AOL music… they have his genre as rock & alternative…. lol lol

  • wordnerdarchie

Not bad for a first post – idol, big gig performance. Good job David! And I didn’t see that much nervousness. He hid it well. The band was a bit loud, but you could still hear him, so I have no problems with how he sounded. There were a couple of small problem areas in regards to pitch , but that’s pretty normal with any live performance.

OMG- Archie has totally been watching Cookie vids to improve his performances to not look so bland on stage. Clutching the microphone like it was a lifeline, bouncing up and down, staring longlingly into the camera!

Budernschnooke, I thought the very same thing within 10 seconds after he started. It was if I was watching a much younger David C. Not that it’s a bad thing. It seems to work for Cook, so why shouldn’t it work for Archie? :devil_tb:

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not sure the guys in the band fit – they seemed so much older than him and needed a more youthful vibe. Using kids around his age as band members doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t seem to fit either, so I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know what the answer would be.

Davidlove, you and I could be twins. How about just a couple years older instead of about 10? When I saw the band I actually felt a little sorry for David. He might have said that they get along well, but David wouldn’t say anything bad about them if they weren’t. If they were younger, I don’t think they would be too boy-bandy. After all, the Jonas Brothers seem to be doing quite well and their oldest member is …what… around 20?

Bottom line? I give him a grade of A-/B plus.

ETA: Because the plus symbol doesn’t show up and I had to change to text.

  • sabby_rina

Yeah I couldn’t hear him and I had to turn up the volume and sit in front of the t.v. (Hello me archie fan…gotta sit up close) No worries about his nerves, I mean Cook had them to during SNL. I think it’s cute when they are nervous like that. lol

However, I gotta say those close ups at the camera got me a little uncomfortable. haha I know other Archie fans loved it but thats not my thing. haha But still, everything was awesome. :)

  • Anne67

Though not a fan of the type of music David is doing, I will say that kid can sing. Not to mention he is just as cute as a button. After reading everything posted about him and what he has done on this blog, all I can say is I would be tickled as a mom if my daughter fell for someone like him. I wish him much success!

Too cute how he kept a death grip on that mic:)

  • abbysee

I thought he did a very solid job. Bottom line the kid can sing. I liked the kicked up a notch rock vibe too. He’s a performer and showed that on Leno. David is beginning to blossom before our eyes. It’s a wonderful thing to behold.

About the band, how many really accomplished musicians that could handle what David is about to embark on are in his age group? Seriously, not many, especially if he wants to avoid the boy band comparision. The last thing he needs is a spice boy behind him. So the older accomplished musicians are the way to go. I give him a B plus simply because this was his first live TV effort.

  • IGetCranked

Loved this! I though David in front of the band moving behind the mic made him look ” for real”! I don’t think the band looks too old for him at all! I love changed up Crush!

  • E

Just wondering, are these the ones who passed the audition? I read somewhere that in the end Jive asked David to pick professional musicians instead for his band.

  • flanm01

What 17 year old wouldn’t be nervous! I thought he did a great job! Yes, the band was overpowering on the chorus, but David worked it out! Looked like he was gripping onto that microphone pretty tight..don’t blame him! YEAH, so proud of David A and can’t wait for his album( see how old I am, I mean CD). I hope this kid goes places..with his personality and kindness, he deserves it.

  • MJack

Have just watched, thought he sounded great. He was nervous cos well pressure was big, I was nervous as well, but he pulled it off, proud of him.
And loved kinda new rock vibe of Crush and new stage style. He actually is developing his behaviour.

  • shell29

I thought Archie did a good job last night. He was noticeably nervous in the beginning but seemed to gradually get more confident. It was only the second time he has performed this song publicly and the first time with his band, so all things considered I thought he did really well. The chorus in the recorded version already has a pop/rock feel so I don’t think it was that drastic of a difference-just kicked up a bit with the live band. I really like his new band-I don’t think they look too old. They look like fairly young guys to me, but maybe to some they look much older in comparison to babyfaced Archie? I don’t know. I agree with abbysee-better to go with seasoned, professional musicians.

  • canadiandcfan

aww he does look all grown up!! he did great!! i was glad to see him and hear him! and i’m looking forward to his album

  • Davidx2

I thought David was great on Leno! :clap_tb: I thought the band was very good considering they’ve only played together a couple weeks. They were a bit loud on the chorus but I think David’s powerful voice overcame it. DA is such a perfectionist that I think he’s more comfortable with musicians who are more experienced. I loved this version of “Crush” and the way he changed it up at the end. Although seeing his first live performance of “Crush” at Ford Day, that one will always be my favorite. :biggrin_wp:

ETA I just watched it again on MJ’s video above….at around 4:00,you can see David’s little sigh of relief that it was over. It just reminded me of Cook after his SNL performance of “Light On”. :lol_wp:

  • irka

This performance sounded and looked excellence on an HD large screen tv with good speakers. None of the computer uploads do it any justice. Music did not sound overpowering to me. I liked the grip on the mic – gave the performance urgency.

  • cruzceleste

How can you dont likethe close ups… he is really good looking kid:

    http://lh4.ggpht.com/_-OGkf-zUZYE/SRPs5Zr3qmI/AAAAAAAACCI/_rPkq2Tdogk/s800/Picture 67.png

After that close up,lots of archies just pass out….

http://www.snarkyarchies.com has like 100 screencaps, for the fans…

I will said again rocking Crush is great!!!!!!

  • soundscene

However, I gotta say those close ups at the camera got me a little uncomfortable. haha I know other Archie fans loved it but thats not my thing. haha But still, everything was awesome. :)

LOL. Idol was notorious for super close-ups on Archie. With the other contestants, they backed up a little. With Archie it was all shoulders and face. I just remember laughing at that during Idol because they did it constantly. Maybe because he had such a baby-face and he looked like he could star in one of those Nuetrogena commercials. The Tonight Show close-ups were far away by comparison.

  • sunchick

I don’t usually say much about Archie’s music because it’s just not my bag and I’m sure I’m not the target audience anyway, but I was curious to see if I like the song any better live. I don’t. The band was seriously lacking a real organic band-vibe. But he sounded like he was in good voice, looked adorable as usual and showed great aplomb under pressure. Nice job.

  • abbysee

After that close up,lots of archies just pass outà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.

    You’re cracking me up! LOL!

  • ianamy

Love the rockstar performance. The new arrangement is good. I can’t help but thinking he should perform Touch My Hands at least once in the TV promotions.

  • Aladdin88

Awww, he did a great job! Pretty dang good for the first TV performance (or live band performance, for that matter) especially considering it was on….the freakin’ Tonight Show! He sounded great–you can really tell his lower register is getting stronger since AI. He was a tad bit nervous at the start, but by the chorus, he was ovah it. I see he’s been practicing working the mic stand since WYSYLM on the AI tour, and yikes, he’s already got the steamy looks into the camera down pat. Mercy, David! You’re only 17! And did I detect a growl during the bridge? LOL

The LOL moment of the night, however, belongs to Julia Louis-Dreyfus when she gave a cute little wave to David after she shook his hand. Fangirl much? Heh.

  • LK08

I read on another fansite that whether you thought he was overpowered by the band depended upon where you watch it. I watched on tv last night and he wasn’t overpowered at all. I expect the sound isn’t very good on youtube/computer.

He was a tad bit nervous in the beginning but got stronger and stronger throughout. I like the band and don’t think they look that old. David just really has a baby face.

I love the way he dressed. It was different but nice.

I keep thinking how amazing it is that at 17, he has so much poise and is able to do so well in so many new and pressured situations. No wonder he and Cook were nervous. This is the big league!

One more thought… Can you imagine these band members of Both David A’s and Cook’s. They go from being nobody to having their first gig be SNL or Jay Leno. Wow. Talk about a lucky break!

  • sma11ie

I didn’t particularly think he was overpowered by the band– and about their age/look, whatever, I really don’t think it matters. I don’t usually pay attention to live bands that back up a pop singer, and I don’t think most do. As long as they sound good and do their job, I think Archie’s in good hands.

I think he did a good job. I’m not feeling the back up singing though… I dunno. Also, I was a bit taken aback to see him stuck to the mike stand like that– maybe that’s what reminded the other commenters of Cook, cuz that was such a DC thing on Idol? Did Archie ever use the mike stand on Idol? I don’t remember. I kinda liked it, cuz it fits with the vibe he has with his band right behind him on stage, and I think the “deathgrip” probably helped him with the nerves. As he works out his performance for subsequent gigs, I’d like to see him start at the mike stand, and then take it off and move around as he gets into it. But for his first live performance (on TV, with a band), he did great.

  • shebee

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnIFYrBCW0s

this one is even better HQ..sounds better here than on tv

  • ozarka

I watched it on TV too and the band didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t seem all that overpowering to me either. I also did not really notice the nervousness that everybody is talking about. And Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve watched several times already on my TiVo. Hopefully the casual viewers will be like me and not see all the minute stuff that the general AI fanatics hone in on. I think he did awesome and he looked really good. BTW, there are even more and higher quality screen caps at Fans of David. Click on the pics for the larger versions of the photos.

  • khomphuong

Totally agree w/ irka …I watched youtube before watching it on T.V. ( i live in East Coast) He did sound better on T.V. than on youtube…

  • cruzceleste

lol,After lots of people keep mentioning how he has improved since the Idol performance, I keep picturing the people a Jive telling:
“-Jive: Ok David here are some pointers for today performance
    -David: Ok
-Watch this videos of DC working the mic
    -David: Ok
-Jive: When the camara does close up,look straigh ahead and do some killer romantics eyes…
    -David: Ok???
-Jive: Don ´t close your eyes…
    -David: Ok
    -Jive:Don ´t lick your lips…”

And that the reason he was so nervous…

And just for the fun of it another close up:
    http://fansofdavid.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/picture-25.png

  • FolkFan

I felt like the band overpowered him a bit in places, which is ridiculous, because one thing that DA definitely has is a strong voice. Anyway, I thought that he sounded good, but the song itself doesn’t do much for me.

I did love that he and the two guitarists to his right all had the pointy-hair thing going on. The attempts to establish that trend continue….

  • Deejay

I read on another fansite that whether you thought he was overpowered by the band depended upon where you watch it. I watched on tv last night and he wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t overpowered at all. I expect the sound isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t very good on youtube/computer.

I watched on tv and thought the band did overpower him a bit on the chorus, but I didn’t mind the loud backup because I thought it added to the energy of the performance. The band and vocals almost seemed to be fighting with each other, but he pulled it off. Someone without his chops could have been lost totally.

  • Laurie

David sounded great as always. But the band seemed to be rushing the song a bit and it seemed David was trying to keep up (breath wise) towards the end. I am still so impressed that he is only 17. Also, I must say that both David A. and David C. have singles out right now, that are not easy songs to sing live. Having said that, I think they both sound better live than many popular artists sound when performing live. Great job David A. This girl is a fan!

  • frogcooke

Smallie, he didnt use the mic stand on AI but did on tour though. He always had at least one hand on the mic during wysylm, except for that big note lol. There was more foot stomping here too lol.

  • http://myspace.com/pm68 Pam

I watched Leno last night to basically see Archie’s performance. After seeing it for the 2nd time, I thought the band was overpowering on the chorus but Archie did a great job!

    :thumbup_tb:

  • leome

I think the overpowering is more in the second half of the song… I thought the band would be just 3 members, was surprised to see 5 people there. Why 2 guitars?
I’m sure he was nervous, but who wouldn’t? He has a lot to improve, but it’s the first appearence and he sang good.

  • LK08

I think he only recently, in the last week went to rehearse for the first time with his band. Someone said he had only practiced about 4-5 times with them. That is amazing. I am sure it takes a while to get used to each other and the sound in every place is different.

  • gerreb

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnIFYrBCW0s

Wow that version is SO CLEAR…both audio and video

  • Suzanne

I saw the nerves during the first verse, but only a bit, and then after that I thought David did great. I agree about the band. (Actually, I thought that same thing for about half of Jason Castro’s performances on AI last year.) This is the first time out–hopefully, we aren’t the only people noticing that the band mics need to be turned down a bit and David’s needs to go up.

One thing I thought last night watching the broadcast–David is so good looking.

  • sue

I tried to stay up for the performance and fell asleep, lol. Archie did fine for being the first time singing “Crush” on tv. He was a little nervous in the beginning but once he got into it, he was his normal amazing self. The band seem so far back from him. They need to move up closer, lol. Archie is looking really cute in that outfit, I am sure the youngins are swooning over him. Leno did look like giant next to petite little Archie. Awwww….that was cute though.

  • JudyOhio

Hmmm, no itunes bump from the Leno appearance. Crush the single is in the same position in all music and in pop. And, the DA CD is in the same position in all music and in pop. I was expecting a little bump.

    :down_tb:

  • gabam

I think that the non-invested watchers thought Archie did a great job on Leno. I did. On my TV, the band only seemed overly-loud a few times on the chorus. One spot when the backup singers were supposed to take the lead, the back up singers were not loud enough. They need to step up and fix that before Jive gives Archie a backing track for the song.

Good going on the first appearance, Archie.

  • houstonrufus

    Sorry!

  • cruzceleste

^Is already posted at Headlines thread…. but thanks…

  • http://www.myspace.com/wn780 k4dc

I must say I enjoyed the mic stand work much more than the holding-the-tummy pose, LOL.

  • Jabkmc

K4dc – Me too! Work the mic stand David! LOL!

    From a poster at NotingDavid…

I was fortunate enough to be there too, and echo kindredspirità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s account, with one thing to add: When I played it back on TV, the band seemed to overpower David in parts; but live was just about perfect. He sounded clear and strong, his voice filled the entire room (as usual), and blended with the band beautifully. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s almost as if they turned him down for the broadcast.

I found this when googling about Lenoà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s broadcast quality regarding audio:
à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Rather than go all-out with 5.1 surround sound, The Tonight Show is broadcast in standard Dolby 2.0. Realistically, there would be little to no benefit of employing more complex sound for a program like this. The vast majority of the show is comprised of Leno talking with his guests. The short band segments before and after the commercials and the musical guests, who usually have five minutes or less to perform, do not warrant or require better audio.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

I couldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t find anything more current than this 2004 excerpt, so I would think theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve upgraded since then. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d always heard about Lenoà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s sound quality not being the greatest, and was admittedly a bit nervous for him and what people would think of the broadcast. But he did GREAT, to which you can all attest. So proud of him. He rocked it!
