David Archuleta’s new single, “Crush” will debut this week at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. That’s according to reliable sources who regularly leak Soundscan numbers online.

“Crush” has set some records:

  1. The highest debut, at #2, on the Hot 100 this year.
  2. The highest debut of all Idol album singles on the Hot 100
  3. The highest position of all Idol album singles (tied with Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone”) on the Hot 100.
  4. The highest chart position for an Idol, period, since Taylor Hicks coronation single, “Do I Make You Proud” debuted at #1 in 2006.

I’ll bet I’m missing something! At any rate, thanks to the peeps who confirmed these stats for me. And a big congratulations to David Archuleta on his huge chart debut. It’s an incredible accomplishment.

Check out Kirsten’s Idol Sales News for more Idol sales numbers. Download “Crush” on iTunes.

Wow, that’s all I have to say. Wow. I had no idea of all of those records. Congratulations David.

  • Virgii5

Wooohoooo!!!! Go David Archuleta!!!! This is awesome!!!!!

  • lefty

Amazing, David. I’m speechless. And proud. :clap_tb:

  • ianamy

    Yay I am so proud!

Not a record, but this marks only the second season where the runner up has out peaked the winner on the Hot 100 with their debut single, following Season 2 Clay Aiken.

  • IGetCranked

I’m really floored with this! I hope these accolades keep coming for him because he has just been a joy to keep track of. It is so nice to see someone with actual talent instead of someone with protool tatooed to their forehead make it!

David Cook hasn’t released his debut single yet–from his album. At this point, it’s not an equal comparison.

Just thought I’d say it before somebody else inevitably did. ;) .

  • JudyOhio

Not to mention, TH’s Do I Make You Proud was a coronation single right after the show, and Archie is a runner up single coming out 3 months later after a finale!

    BRAVO DAVID ARCHULETA !!! :clap_tb: :clap_tb: :clap_tb: :clap_tb:

  • ianamy

Technically, David Cook hasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t released his debut single yet.

Referring to debut on Hot 100, not debut singles. Anyway I copied that sentence from other record sites. I didn’t make it up.

  • ealbino

Yay David James Archuleta!! Awesome job!! :clap_tb: :jittery_tb:
Time to celebrate :drunk_tb: woo hooooooo

  • davidaforlife

    ianamy,

Well if that’s what you mean then David Cook’s debut was actually higher. Archie’s “Hot 100 debut” was #36 with Imagine after the finale. I say that as a huge Archie fan, not looking to start a Cook/Archie comparison war here.

This an amazing debut for David. I can’t wait for the rest of his album.

  • elle

I’m sure Cook will do well also. BUT WAY TO GO DAVID!!! Words can’t express the joy and elation his fans are feeling right now. And may I say it’s about time!!! This is so awwwwww – some!

    VIRTUAL PARTY!

  • Shereen

Also this marks only the second season where the runner up has out peaked the winner on the Hot 100 with their debut single, following Clay Aiken in Season 2
    :)

    5 records now! Oh boy.

  • elle

davidaforlife, just remember that the coronation song just got aired before millions of people as opposed to the limited airplay Crush has gotten.

But let’s not compare please! At least tonight.

  • ianamy

As I said, I copied it from other record site, not making it up myself. If we talk about peak here. David has the higher peak.

David has broken all kinds of records and this will not be the one that starts comparison war if there is one to start. Gift campaign can be a better excuse, don’t you think?

So what are we comparing here? His single debut? His Hot 100 debut? Either a coronation single is comparable to an album single or it’s not. See how crazy this gets?

I am STRONGLY suggesting we leave the comparison game out of this discussion. It’s only going to lead to an argument.

Archie’s accomplishment is amazing all on it’s own. Let’s just leave it at that.

  • davidaforlife

    elle,

I agree that it’s amazing David was able to get #2 with hardly any promotion.

It just shows how much wider his appeal is than all the haters declared it was.

  • lefty

But letà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not compare please! At least tonight.

Amen, elle. It’s all good! :thumbup_tb:

  • JudyOhio

Ok, there are coronations singles and there are those studio versions of songs they did on the show that charted. But I think what we’re talking about first singles off of first albums (post AI show). Cook hasn’t released his yet. The coronations single for all of the winners is a different animal. (For example, compare Taylor’s Hicks coronation single to his first ALBUM single “Just to feel that way” or was it “runaround”? Which shows you anything can happen. Anyway, for comparison sake, on this particular topic, I believe we’re talking the charting of debut album singles and actual album singles. (And if I’m wrong, it won’t be the first time.) lol

  • olalla

I never imagined that David’s song would debut at #2 on the Hot 100. That is just spectacular.

I’m very happy for David A.

  • crzyshrk

For a song that hasn’t been released to mainstream airplay, no music video, and no major promotions..this is AMAZING!!!!

  • Keel

Not to mention, THà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Do I Make You Proud was a coronation single right after the show, and Archie is a runner up single coming out 3 months later after a finale!

The finale for Taylor’s year was on May 24, 2006 whereas the single was not released until mid-June 2006, with the #1 debut on Billboard taking place June 21, 2006. So the single release wasn’t right after the show — like David’s single, Taylor had a few weeks within which the airplay could build before the single was officially released for sale. Great accomplishment no matter what, but just thought we should clarify that.

  • ianamy

I think it is probably better to leave the comparison, too. As the second that I point out that David outpeaked Cook on Hot 100, the long-held peace is broken apparently.

So let’s just celebrate David today!

  • jnd1221

I’m definitely more of a Cookie fan, but this is amazing! Archie must be ecstatic, and congrats to his fans! While it’s not completely my thing, I do like the song, and I love him as a person. It’s great to see someone talented do so well.

  • ealbino

Archieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s accomplishment is amazing all on ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s own. Letà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just leave it at that.

    :thumbup_tb:

  • JudyOhio

Sounds good to me. :smile1_tb: WTG Archie! What a great day for you!

  • Duke

THAT’S WHAT I’M TALKIN’ ABOUT ARCHIE!

  • http://myspace.com/saltwatercures pj

Umm, go Archie? I bought it to help him out, but I won’t feel that need when his album comes out, unless the rest of the songs are a lot better.

Congrats to Archie, though! I have no doubt he’ll do well with Jive behind him. Look how well Jordin has done and S6 wasn’t nearly as popular.

  • gerreb

WOW!!! #2???? Archie, I am sooo happy for you! I can’t wait to hear what the rest of his album will sound like!!

  • Kirsten

I am STRONGLY suggesting we leave the comparison game out of this discussion. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s only going to lead to an argument.

Yes, comparison games can only lead to grief. Apples/oranges and all that. Plus, nobody has to fail for somebody else to be a success. There is room for everybody.

But, I will come out and say, forget comparing “Crush” to Idol singles period. He’s playing with the big boys now. “Crush” did amazingly well for any single from any type of album.

    > The highest debut, at #2, on the Hot 100 this year.

That says quite a bit, in my opinion.

  • jan

I came here to congratulate Archie on his accomplishments. Congratulations and much success in the future.

I don’t know why some want to make comparisons – let’s just have joy for him. If this degenerates into a fan war – then I’m leaving bi-partisanship behind and going back to only rooting for DC.

Let’s instead set the example set by both Davids – there is room for success for both.

  • ggdoorsfan

WELL DONE DAVID JAMES ARCHULETA – Those who were with you from the beginning knew down to our souls you were something special, and have never wavered in our belief that you are destined, as Paula told you after you sang IMAGINE, for SUPERSTARDOM… soak it all in tonight, little brother - this one is for you… :clap_tb:

  • gerreb

ggdoorsfan…..that was so nice. i second that!!! :)

  • http://mjsbigblog.com lucyfan

Letà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s instead set the example set by both Davids – there is room for success for both.

Yep, what Jan said. I have a feeling no one is happier for Archie than Cook, and Archie will be the 1st in line to high-five Cook when it’s his turn, so…it’s all good.

Yay Archie! Way to go, little one. :thumbup_tb:

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

We don’t need to lecture each other on how to behave.

Let’s keep this thread focused on Archie and his single, not on discussing each other. Thank you!

  • davidaforlife

also I would just like to mention, this is the highest debut on the Hot 100 in almost 2 years, since Fall Out Boy debuted at #2 with “This Ain’t a Scene, it’s an Arms Race” on January 18, 2007.

  • RV65

CONGRATULATIONS ARCHIE!!!!………….FOR CLARIFICATION, HIS FIRST BIG HIT WAS…….”BILLLEEEEEEEE ROCKEEEEEEEE”

  • sabby_rina

That is amazing! I’m so proud! I haven’t even heard “Crush” on the radio yet and it’s #2?! Thats awesome!!!

This season’s contestants are gonna further rock the billboard charts!

  • ggdoorsfan

Can’t think of anything else to say tonight about the way I, and millions of David’s fans feel about him and his success.. this quote, from an interview David gave earlier this month in a Spanish language magazine. pretty much sums it up:

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“This show was not easy for him, he just made it look easy,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ says Michael Orland, pianist and musical director for American Idol, about Archuleta, who will graduate from high school next year. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“He came as a genius and left as a genius. All the participants aspired to reach his level.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ em> :king_tb:

  • ianamy

Got this from IDF, need some verification if this is true.

“Actually, I think “Crush” does hold the record for the latter (highest first-week chart position in the Hot 100′s 50-year history for a lead single from a debut album). I just checked Wikipedia’s entry for “Doo Wop (That Thing)”:

“Doo Wop (That Thing)” is a 1998 by American Hip hop singer/rapper Lauryn Hill, included on her debut solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.

While NOT Hill’s first solo single (she had previously released “The Sweetest Thing” and a cover of “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” …) “Doo Wop” was her first, and some consider only major solo success.”

  • FolkFan

It doesn’t seem like it would be very easy to compare the two performances, in any event. DC’s was a coronation single; DA’s was not (which has pluses and minuses for both). DC’s was released right after the AI finale; DA’s was not (which is a plus for DC). DC’s was out for fewer days in its first week than DA (which is a plus for DA). DC’s was released at a time when it required more sales to hit #2 on the Hot 100—he sold a lot more than DA his first week, but it still didn’t get him #1 or #2. How do you compare them, even if you wanted to do so?

My guess is that both Davids and both of their labels were happy with the performance of their first singles, which seems like the most important things to me.

  • Lu

Nice job Archie…. TPTB are high fiving eachother as we type…..

  • sherryw

Kudos to Archie on a fantastic debut. I am a Cook fan but have no problem acknowledging that Archie is this season’s success story. Congratulations to him and best of luck in the future.

  • tinawina

Congrats to Archie! WOW! He must be over the moon right now. :clap_tb:

  • Kirsten

It doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t seem like it would be very easy to compare the two performances, in any event.

It’s not. For all the reasons you mention (that’s why I refered to apples/oranges). For every single, there are asterixes and things that make each case unique. When Cook does come out with a single, things will be different again. It will depend on what other singles are out there. The season. The promo. The duration before his CD releases. The audience he appeals to. Etc.

My guess is that both Davids and both of their labels were happy with the performance of their first singles, which seems like the most important things to me.

And the most important thing to the labels (which improves their odds of them being able to make more music for their fans). Both are doing very well.

I am a Cook fan but have no problem acknowledging that Archie is this seasonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s success story.

I think that it is far too early to say that. First of all, because we have not seen what Cook can do. Second of all, because success is measured in many ways. Cook has already accomplished so much.

Today, Archie has had an amazing achievement for any artist. I’m going to congratulate him for that.

  • ggdoorsfan

IMO, Archie success will be the greatest, sweetest and the most acknowledged success story of this season… Why? Lest we forget, he was all but written off by some AI judges, music critics, MSM and bloggers as not having “mainstream appeal”… something his fans knew all along was ludicrous, and deeply insulting to the intelligence of the average music listener and buyer… we believed in him nonetheless, and knew he was tough and had a resiliency that would overcome these negative and erroneous assessments of his appeal. He’s triumphed with dignity against a whole lotta odds – vocal paralysis, negative media backlash in the run up to the finale et al… Speaks to an inner strength, a grit and determination that drives him to be the best he can be… back that up with THE VOICE, and you have a winner – not solely in the context of a singing competition, but for life…

Okay, you numbers nuts, here are more stats from Radio & Records:

Crush was added to 21 new Top 40 stations:
    DAVID ARCHULETA CRUSH (19/JIVE/ZOMBA)
KDWB, KHOP, KKPN, KQMQ, KQXY, KWNZ, KWYL, WDKF, WFLY, WHHD, WHTS, WKSZ, WNCI, WNTQ, WPXY, WSTR, WVYB, WXKB, WYKS, WZEE, XM Top 20 on 20

Crush added 505 new spins on Top 40 stations:
    DAVID ARCHULETA CRUSH 939 505 8.027

Crush added 67 new spins on the following AC stations:
    DAVID ARCHULETA CRUSH 91 67 0.84
    KBEE 31 WALK 11 WWLI 9 KSSK 8 WKJY 7 KMXZ 5 WOOD 1 WHUD 0 KRBB -1

    Go Archie!

By the way, Magic Rainbows had a nice uptick in Top 40 airplay last week, too:
    29 32 DAVID COOK THE TIME OF MY LIFE 1669 115 8.15

Which is interesting because TOML’s strength and longevity has seemingly been more on Hot AC than Top 40. Go Cookie!

I was riding in my friend’s car earlier and, as always happens every single time I start humming, heh, as I did then, my friend turned on the car stereo…of course, Archie’s song was on. It was at a “mellow” station. I understand “Crush” is also topping the charts of several local stations right now.

I’m not crazy about this particular Archie song, but I’m glad it’s doing so well. :)

  • Skylark

I heard “Crush” on my local “Top 40″ station yesterday, and I was so thrilled for David that his single is a hit with his age group … right on the money, David … congrats!!

  • proudmom

Wow! I’m so happy for David.
