Yeah, I think it’s kind of questionable to have a big Idol success on stage with someone who is competing this season. I’m sure they sounded good together and everything but it throws up a lot of room for nasty rumors about plants and rigging of the show by favoring a contestant out of the gate. I bet Archie sang his heart out on those songs (Amazing Grace is one of my all time favorites) but I wish he would have sung them alone, ya know?

I think David Osmond has every right to audition. Sure, he may have a career performing, but what kind of performing? The kind that is set in motion by his family? Maybe that’s not the kind of career he wants. Just because he’s an Osmond doesn’t mean he’ll get a good honest to goodness professional solo recording contract, performing popular music. If that were the case, don’t you think he’d have a contract by now?

Yep… that seems like a good prediction. Females are basically taking over the charts right now, so it’ll either be a singer/songwriter type, or a sassy pop-rocker ala P!nk or Katy Perry.

I wouldn’t really call Anna a “plant”. She hasn’t been on any shows or had any recording experience as far as I know.

I also think that the next winner will be female. I just hope I don’t get too wrapped up in the next season. I was way too emotionally invested in Season 7.

Ai has only produced one guy (1st place winner) that looks like he (David Cook)will be as successful as Kelly, Carrie, and hopefully Jordin. The majority of girls went crazy for the 2 Davids last season, and I’m sure that AI paid attention to that. To stay current I think another guy win would be the ticket. AI needs a Justin Timberlake or Jones Brother (minus 2 :wink_ee:).

Wasn’t that Justin Guarini? Not a teen, but that’s what he was–the Justin Timberlake-type. Obviously, it didn’t work out.

Nah, if they wanted teen idol, they had the chance in season 7 and, well, it didn’t happen. They’ll be hard-pressed to find a teenage male who can actually, really sing (which you need for the R&B/pop genre) and is good-looking. Forget trying to find one that can dance as well.

I don’t think even Chris Brown would do that well on AI. As a live performer he’s hit or miss–sometimes amazing and sometimes “wah?” I think that will be the case for most guys around his age that are R&B/pop.

It’s been seven years since Guarini…I think, things have changed. And I wasn’t saying he had to be Chris Brown. There’s also Justin Timberlake, who is an electrifying performer.

There might be room for performers who may not be as pitch-perfect as Archie but can actually command an audience more.

Hey long time lurker here..I just have to say that for you who said that AI needs a guy who is good looking, can sing and dance…that person was Blake Lewis..heck he could even beat box! But look how that turned out. It’s more about charisma and personality which I think sets Archuleta apart from the Blakes and Justins. Just my tidbit

The teens don’t bother me. It was the people who were waiting for him to turn 18… that kind of thing. LOL. Gives me the creeps. And I already said it was my issue. It’s harmless, grown women have been doing the same thing to hot teens for years (see my previous mention of Zach Efron) but for some reason with Archie it makes me really uncomfortable to see/read. Maybe the idol thing makes you feel like you know people. so it seems more real? I dunno. No worries.

I hope this Osmond guy doesn’t make the cut. I have nothing against him trying out and I get why he would, but I do think his name is a problem. If the guy is out performing with his more famous family members, then to me he’s coming in with an automatic fanbase that will vote for anything Osmond. As long as he’s going by that last name, it seems like at least he would be starting with a bit of an advantage.

Archuleta is a very good looking guy who sings great Pop music and I am kinda confused about why people are having a hard time with his popularity.

I come from the world of Hip Hop and David Archuleta does not have to be a great dancer for someone to appreciate great music and the picture perfect guy singing it. His AOL sessions the guy owns that stage. He really does command his audience.

It might seem a disadvantage here, but I think the Osmonds as a whole already have a huge fanbase. That can’t be underestimated. Though I don’t think he would win anyway, because somewhere along the way the backlash would finally win. It would mostly be an advantage for him in early rounds IMO.

I can understand the younger tween/teen girls or ladies close to his age seeing him as “hot”. I don’t see him in that way at all, but I’m in my early thirties. He’s just a cute kid to me. I do think it’s creepy for the older ladies to be leering and drooling over him. That squicks me out more than anything.

Haha I’m in college already but let’s just say there’s a TON of college girls who think Archuleta is super cute as a person but super sexy when he sings..alter ego maybe? I also have a college guy friend who randomly hummed TMH one day and didn’t wanna admit what he was humming.

alleygirl–just what I was going to say. I don’t see thinking he’s more than cute when he’s talking, but when he’s singing–yowza. Did you see those AOL sessions? He’s good looking, and when the music starts, he’s so confident, he grows up. But when he’s interviewed, he becomes a kid at the bus stop.

All ages loving you makes one big time “STAR”. That’s why David Archuleta’s gonna be a success.

Youth does have its advantages.

David Osmond, I hope people give him a chance. Even people from famous families deserve their chance.

Tinawina, sorry if I creeped you out. I was just trying to be funny. I know exactly where you’re coming from. David has such an adorable baby face that he looks much younger than most teens his age. His speech and demeanor are also not as sophisticated as that of the average teenager. I’m guessing that his being home-schooled for a good part of his primary school life has contributed to his shyness and perceived awkwardness. However, I think that Jeff and Lupe have done a marvelous job of raising him. I hope David retains his sweetness and boyish charms for as long as possible. It’s good to see that he is embracing that side of him. He has openly called himself a dork or a nerd. Lucky for him, it is evident that he does not have to be a macho cool dude to be popular with the masses. Most others in his peer group want to grow up way too fast. David is a refreshing change of pace.

IMO, David A. wouldn’t have gotten as far as he did if he didn’t command an audience to a pretty high degree.

I know what you mean, and to me it is because he seems younger than his age. Though in some ways he might have an old soul, in other ways, i.e. socially, he comes across as a child sometimes. He seems sheltered and innocent, he giggles whenever girls are mentioned. On Idol he was an “aw shucks, gee whiz” kind of kid, and I do mean kid, because 1) at 17 he is a kid, and 2) he seems even younger than most 17 year olds these days.

So yeah, a lot of people do find it uncomfortable that older women lust after him … it is more creepy than other idols who at least exhibit some worldliness and lack of innocence and seem more like adults.

As I say, it’s just a perception but many do share this perception. In some ways he reminds me of Clay Aiken, because of the innocent persona that he projects, though in David’s case I think it’s real.

Yes, I read the interview with Jennette McCurdy. I’m glad you’ve come around to my way of thinking. LOL! She seems to match up better with David personality-wise. I found it interesting that like David, Jennette had to struggle with crippling shyness when she was younger.
