Thank you MJ!!! If Jive doesn’t set up a Spanish language album eventually, assuming more albums follow, they are fools. The boy was born to sing in Spanish. Gorgeous.

  • LVanna

Beautiful song. Beautiful voice. Beautiful person!

  • tierbee

    That was gorgeous.

If Jive doesn’t set up a Spanish language album eventually, assuming more albums follow, they are fools.

Hell, I don’t even speak (or understand much of) Spanish and only bought a few singles of his current album and I’d probably buy a Spanish language album if it sounded like *that*. He seems very confident and comfortable singing in Spanish.

  • heidijoy

Contigo en la Distancia. Beautiful song sang beautifully and passionately. Googled it-beautiful message. ……and the crowd went wild and the twitter went wild….and the fan sites went wild.

    …………………Speechless

There’s a reason David Archuleta was honored for his acheivements in music at the 2009 ALMA Awards ‘” he’s freakin’ incredible.

The 18-year-old with a voice that could take down artists twice his age performed on the awards show, which celebrates the best in entertainment by Hispanic artists, singing in complete Spanish. His ballad of choice was ‘Contigo en la Distancia,’ a song made famous in recent years by Christina Aguilera.

If Christina has the ultimate female version, it’s safe to say David owns this song for the guys. His voice was flawless, chill-inducing ‘” nothing short of amazing.

  • http://www.dallascowboys.com GeminiDolly

    Wow. That was muy bueno.

  • chelley

I just watched it in HD. I LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE it sooo much! He was so good and comfortable and confident. I wish he could have sung like that when he revisited AI.

I hope his next “regular” album has songs that showcase his voice like this one…

  • Sunshinegirl

He looks so mature and so handsome!

  • lorenzo

Wow… very good, his phrasing is killer. I’ve never been a fan, but I’d love to have a “Spanish Cd” by him. I really like him in Spanish, I speak both, but I really like his Spanish “Voice”.

  • houstonrufus

One of my good friends from Mexico, where the song is a standard, knows the song by heart. She said David’s is now her favorite version. She said his pronunciation is perfect and he sings it with great passion. She can detect a slight accent when he speaks in Spanish but none when he sings in Spanish.

I don’t speak Spanish but I know a great vocal and this was one.

  • khomphuong

I think i should take Spanish class now.

i cannot stop listening to this… i really can’t… david showed why he is such an incredible singer and conveyor of emotion in a song with this performance… i understood not one word of it as sung in spanish, so the focus had to be solely on his voice… and through his voice only, i understood and deeply felt the passion, the emotional yearning of this song. i can’t name a time in recent memory when i was so moved by a performance as much as this one. i may be a fan, and biased in the eyes of most, but david has moved into a whole ‘nother orbit of singers after tonight. anyone still denying his sheer brillance and power as a vocalist has to be in deep, deep denial after listening to this.

  • luvadamlambert

that was stunning and I don’t even speak Spanish LOL I love archie

  • pchboys

    Beautiful!

What do you all think. . . Allison Iraheta winning the same award next year?

  • yaminacookie

Give me this over Top 40 fluff any day – it was absolutely beautiful. Nice, nice job, Archie. I have no idea what he was saying and it still moved me. Less is more – nice combo of delicate guitar and soaring vocals. Loved it.

ETA: sorry pchboys – but don’t think Allison can win Rising Male Star.

  • LVanna

    Thanks lvanna=D

Very welcome sweetie……..I just LUV David…….and you!

  • temkanoe

It was so romantic! Lol, I feel like I’m robbing the cradle! I’m 24!!!

But he needs to release an album in Spanish!

  • mhel

what a stellar performance by david…it was perfection…it was moving and so passionate…i don’t understand any single word in spanish(except estrella which means star? lol) anyway, that was so beautiful david!congratulations and bravo!!!!!

    i’m so proud you….!â™ ¥!

  • RV65

That was so good…simple guitar accompaniment and soaring heartfelt vocals…always amazed at this young man’s skills….always…

Lyrics of Contigo En La Distancia (With You at a Distance) with English translation

    Spanish
    Contigo en la distancia

No existe un momento del dia
En que pueda apartarte de mi
    El mundo parece distinto
Cuando no estas junto a mi

    No hay bella melodia
    En que no surjas tu
    Ni yo quiero escucharla
    Si no la escuchas tu

[1] Es que te has convertido
    En parte de mi alma
    Ya nada me consuela
    Si no estas tu tambien

    Mas alla de tus labios
    Del sol y las estrellas
    Contigo en la distancia
    Amado mio estoy

    Contigo en la distancia
    Amado mio estoy, oh
    Contigo

    English
    With you at distance

There’s no such moment of the day
That could drift you apart from me
    The world seems different
When you’re not by my side.

    There’s no beautiful song
    In which you don’t appear
I don’t want to listen it
    If you don’t.

    You have become
    Part of my heart
    Nothing comforts me anymore
If you’re not by my side.

    Far beyond your lips
Of the sun and of the stars
    With you at distance
    My beloved one, I am.

    [Repeat 1]

    With you at distance
My beloved one, I am, oh
    With you

Totally agree, ggdoorsfan. I read on one of David’s sites that he isn’t exactly affluent in Spanish, so even more power to him. His mom must help him with this and she is a very good singer also. I think David is going to be very huge and can’t wait until his Christmas album drops on 10-13.

I bought David’s CD, both Davids, actually, but that’s beside the point :) and, for me, David Archuleta is the second best singer AI has produced. His vocals and phrasing touch my soul.

Yes, Archie deserves to have his albums reflect his true talent.

Some singers just go through the motions. Archie’s expressiveness comes from the heart.

David Archuleta, the class act, bringing so much joy to old and new fans. Shine on Bright, Rising Star!

  • steve

Not a big Archie fan but that was great.

  • fearbear

Wow..amazing!!! I wish I can understand Spanish… this is the strongest I’ve heard his voice sound *melts*

  • ghl

I think you are right. Since many Americans don’t know Spanish, they could totally focus on vocals and his interpretation of the song. He is one the best vocals in the male music scene. The power he projects from the whole body is unbelievable and rare to find these days. I love his hot low ranges and they are getting lower. His vocal coach said his voice will get richer as he matures. With one vocal chord, amazing !!

  • JudyOhio

Thanks for the HD video Rv65. I really enjoyed it. Simply beautiful.

This makes me want to hear more Spanish songs from David. I am even more eager now to get my hands on his Christmas album because I know he sings the Spanish song “Riu Riu Chiu” on it.

Thank you, lovemymatthew, for that link. It’s nice to get a glimpse of what went on that wasn’t visible from the TV set. I pulled this excerpt from it. He got a standing ovation…

The audience spontaneously erupted in applause and cheers a few times during the number. At the end of the song, in the front row, Selma Hayek bolted out of her chair to her feet in wild applause. She was the first one in the theater ON HER FEET, followed by most everyone else. David smiled, took his bow and graciously left the stage.

    ————————————————————————————————————–

@Shontelle_Layne, David’s tour mate during the Jingle Balls, tweeted her praise of his performance. She is a fellow Caribbean Latino from the island of Barbados…

Eeeep! @DavidArchie Just sang in Espaà ±ol! ¡Los pulgares arriba! #ALMA09

@DavidArchie Fantastic job tonight Archie! ¡Yo lo quiero! #ALMA09

¡Los pulgares arriba! = Two thumbs up!
    ¡Yo lo quiero! = I loved it!

  • flicker

I think that was the best performance ever from David. It was absolutely beautiful. In my opinion, this suits him better than the pop fluff his label makes him sing. He has a wonderful voice, of course, but a big part of his talent is the emotion that he brings to his songs.

Really beautiful. I’m proud of David.

  • NM

    Amazing performance :)

  • Squirrely

That was very nice and he looks great too. His voice sounds really strong on this song.

    Just wanted to add…..
That’s a pretty nice screen cap of Archuleta you placed out front for this thread MJ. David looks more mature in it and quite handsome in fact.

  • kimk

Brilliant, mature, restrained yet deeply felt and profound….
hmm still taking it all in…
seems David has taken this performance to another level quite
    Classic and Beautiful.
    Bravo David!

  • trezoc

THIS….this is his zone. He’s comfortable, controlled, and dare i say sensual in this performance. With his age it’s understandable why they went the pop route…but THIS is what he was born to do.Latino crooner FTW!! SO happy for him. This was a big night.

  • KathyH

I watched this with my 16yo daughter, who is taking Spanish IV and interpreted for me. The lyrics are beautiful. A perfect fit for David.

    The worlds next Ricky Martin!!!

No, seriously. Read his Wikki page. He has huge success worldwide with his Latin records. The man has a laundry list of awards. He’s a noted humanitarian.

Archie should really consider doing Latin music. He’s never sounded better. Bravo!

  • jpfan

Thank God. I loved Archie during his season but have hated everything he’s done since. This reaffirms my faith in his talent again. Loved it.

  • Tara

I’m with you jpfan.. Well, not quite hated..but didn’t buy his CD. Too young/pop. But boy, this was beautiful. I did pre order his Christmas CD. That should be beautiful as well.

I don’t speak much Spanish but I would buy a CD of it. Gorgeous.

Gorgeous job David. My favorites come in second place. lol.

He is so mature in his comfort zone (music).

  • ggdoorsfan

Thank God. I loved Archie during his season but have hated everything he’s done since. This reaffirms my faith in his talent again. Loved it.

i’m not giving them a pass, but it’s not hard to see a bit of jive’s ”dilemna” after watching this performance… how exactly do you market a 17/18 year old, fresh faced, youthful appearing, big voiced singer with so much musical versatility, and appeal, across so many diverse demographics, and do it in a way that is critically and commercially viable?

for david, having these kind of seemingly limitless gifts are a huge plus, but it does and has presented challenges finding the right marketing strategy… this is where i feel his youth is his greatest weapon, and asset – he has time, god willing, to continue the maturation process artistically, and we just need to allow him, and those charged with guiding his career the time to let the process unfold, as organically as possible…

many have wanted to pigeon hole him as ”disney-esque”, just a ”teen singer”, or ”ballad boy” because of his ability to sing them beautifully… this performance dismantles those limiting and short-sighted labels quite effectively. i’m happy this performance is opening eyes again to the depth and unmatched versatility that has always been there…

  • frogcooke

“The best performance was by a young singer called David Archuleta who I had never heard of before but since the tweens on Twitter were going crazy for him I looked him up and turns out he was last year’s American Idol finalist. He sang a timeless love song in espaà ±ol (Contigo en la Distancia- Together Across the Distance) effortlessly. Kudos to David!”

  • kimk

    ggdoorsfan….
such a big fan of yours I might say as well…

So darn proud of David! Goodness the Christmas CD and the appearances
associated with it…. if this performance is any indication of what we will have the privilege of experiencing oh boy Merry Christmas indeed!

  • ianaleah

Wonderful singer, beautiful powerful voice, delightful personality, household name-between facebook and twitter-the teens can make him an even bigger winner-if, big if-he has the right songs. Gotta like the songs. He is a fantastic singer already. This performance was beautiful. Bravo!

  • Suzanne

David sounds and looks awesome here. If his eyes were open a little more, it would be a 10 of a performance. Incredible vocal.

Fantastic that they didn’t say “American Idol” in the introduction. Nice–maybe David is at his breakaway.

Wouldn’t it be great if a screencap from this performance could be slapped onto his Holiday album for a cover. Such a handsome guy here; such a little boy there.

  • Kitwana

i’m not giving them a pass, but it’s not hard to see a bit of jive’s ‘ dilemna’ after watching this performance’ ¦ how exactly do you market a 17/18 year old, fresh faced, youthful appearing, big voiced singer with so much musical versatility, and appeal, across so many diverse demographics, and do it in a way that is critically and commercially viable?

I agree. Jive has a tough choice to make. The David Archuleta that sang at the ALMAs and the one that sings Crush and Zero Gravity are like two different artists. That is a good thing. I love both but I think that at this time, Crush and Zero Gravity are the better fit for him because of his age. It is also far more marketable on Top 40. There are just not a lot of 18 year old stars on the AC or even the Hot AC charts. If he is still around, he can go the Michael Buble route in 10 or 12 years when he is 28 or 30.

  • Suzanne

I am surprised how many people are commenting that they are proud of David, as if he’s the world’s nephew. I wonder how many people post that they are proud of David Cook or Adam Lambert or Kris Allen when they have a strong performance.

  • jpfan

I think they’re proud he did a song in a language that isn’t his native tongue and killed it. And he’s still a young man so “proud” works great. When the other guys kill it in another language I’m sure their fans will be impressed also.

  • LoveDaRocker

As a spanish-speaking Hispanic, I can tell you, this is the real deal. Wow!

    The worlds next Ricky Martin!!!

Comparing Archie to Ricky is comparing Apples and Oranges. Rickey Martin is very entertaining, and he can actually sing, but not like this. Archie is cute and all, but will never look or dance like Rickey.
A closer comparison will be Luis Miguel (some might recall he used to date Mariah Carey). Luis Miguel is huge in Latin America and Europe, not to mention, he fills arenas when touring in the US. He is just not American style pop.
If Archie nurtures both markets, he will sell more CDs overall than any previous AI.
Allison, take notice. To say that Allison can do this is an understatement. She already has name recognition in Latin America (Quinceanera anyone?). She should also follow this route. She could be the next Alejandra Guzman!

  • glamatheart

Beautiful! This is David at his best.

  • revcat

I am surprised how many people are commenting that they are proud of David, as if he’s the world’s nephew. I wonder how many people post that they are proud of David Cook or Adam Lambert or Kris Allen when they have a strong performance.

American Idol is a unique path to stardom. After seeing a young person like David in our living rooms for weeks we begin to feel like we know them, almost like they are extended family – the American Idol family! So when our favorites “leave home” and spread their wings we are proud of their success. And yes, Idol fans will express pride in Cook, Lambert and Allen when they have strong performances that are recognized outside of Idol. Of course we know they aren’t really part of our family, but we still feel like we had a small part in their journey and in a way we did.

After all, where would any star be without their fans? That being said, great singer and great performance! :) I’m proud of you Archie!

  • ggdoorsfan

I am surprised how many people are commenting that they are proud of David, as if he’s the world’s nephew.

that shy and self effacing demeanor he has offstage does seem to bring out and inspire a sense of protectiveness, for better or worse, in many fans… there is a certain vulnerability he exudes at times that lots of fans pick up on, and in the adult base, feelings and views of him as that ”favorite nephew” are common… for his fans, his growth from the idol stage to the world stage has at times felt like watching someone dear to you grow up, and find their place… so… yeah… i’m very proud of this young man, and all he’s done, and all he promises to do…

  • LoveDaRocker

First a disclaimer: the following comment is not to disparage America, or American pop, in any way.
Some people is saying that David at Alma’s was a different artist. I disagree. He is still a young pop artist. The difference is that American pop and Latin American pop are somewhat different. Take both Ricky Martin and Shakira, for example. Both were very different artists before and after their “crossover” into the US. Their Latin music sounds closer to AC than their US music, both in style and content. Shakira’s earlier CD’s, for example, dealt with issues like abortion (Se quiere, Se mata), injustice (Donde Estan Los Ladrones (title track), Octavo Dia), and lost of serious love songs (Vuelve, Si Te Vas, and lost of others). In the US? Hips Don’t Lie and She Wolf.
Regarding Ricky, all I have to say is that William Hung exposed how ridiculous “She Bang” is. And, it remains the “hit” that identifies him in the US.
Bottom line: Latin American pop is more AC and soft rock than American pop. So, an artist who wants to be successful in both markets generally has to adapt a bit in style and content.

  • LK09

Thank you MJ for posting this!

Every time I heard David, I am blown away. He is gorgeous inside and out and his interpretation of music pierces the soul.

  • hermy

I was watching this with my family and they were surprised that he was latino, and that he had the perfect accent. Really loved the performance <3

  • Suzanne

And yes, Idol fans will express pride in Cook, Lambert and Allen when they have strong performances that are recognized outside of Idol.

I guess so, maybe for a while. I’m thinking that, over time in the minds of the buying public, the performer transitions from a contestant in a game show to an independent musical artist. And contestants from AI are in different stages of that transition, depending on the outlook or investment of the audience member in the competition. No one sees Miley Cyrus, or Coldplay, or Sean Kingston in concert and thinks “I’m so proud of her/him/them,” even though they might be teenagers or have gone through an impressive personal growth. The fans think that the concert was awesome or it wasn’t. Most fans of Kelly Clarkson probably aren’t so much proud of her growth as they just like her CD (or maybe wish they were her, like fans wish they could be Britney Spears) because it’s been 8 years since she won and AI isn’t the first thing people think when they hear her voice anymore.

I think there’s a lot of people who see David as a music industry professional, so I don’t mean to make the point that everyone comments about him as if he’s their personal little brother. But I do think that it will take a long time for the complete transition to happen.

All that said, there have been a few blog-type reviews of the ALMAs that comment that David had the strongest performance, and one blogger stated that he didn’t know who David was. I think that’s the greatest thing of all for David. People who do not watch American Idol becoming aware of David as an artist. That’s the way he’ll build a career because the AI audience loyalties shift as new seasons start.

  • dhunken

    Bravo David Bravo!!!!

  • ghl

Jive and David should figure out where his direction will be in his musical career wise. His fans already knew how gifted his musical ability is. A recent interview with his tour manager said the most surprising element about David is that he can easily swim around between genres.

It was Jive’s choice to omit songs like Works For Me, Somebody Out There, Zero Gravity, Waiting For Yesterday and Save The Day from the main album. They used these songs for bonus songs and didn’t give a chance to be released on radio. If they included these songs, the album will show off his versatility more. Now we know that his Spanish songs should be a must on his album.

But most of all, David himself loves to sing pops. ‘Crush’ is just a right song for his age, voice, image and talent to play the piano. I think he should browse different genres and styles of songs more and wherever his heart goes, he can decide the direction of own music. He is still young. Meanwhile his fans enjoy whatever he sings and follow his journey faithfully.

BTW, his Christmas CD has a Spanish song. Yoo hoo!!

  • leome

I think that was really beutiful!! He has such a fantastic voice and it really fits these songs.

I don’t think just cause he’s 19 he has to be singing those pop/teenage/boysband songs. After all, many many 18/19/20/etc years old don’t even listen to that kind of music… David himself doesn’t. lol so yeah, a teen can make a different type of music that is not just that kind of pop.
But, he’s young, he still has that amazing voice so I think he can grow into a different style. What he’s doing nowadays doesn’t have to define his future.

  • KathyH

BTW, David is not quite 19. Turns 19 on December 28.

Wow. I had full on chills during that performance. I am so happy for him. Everything that is magical and authentic about him shined through in that performance. The audience LOVED it too. Good for him. I hope he makes a Spanish album. He soars when the lyrics are emotional…that’s just who he is. Good for Archie!!! I think he won a whole new crop of fans.

  • LoveDaRocker

    Wow!
    Can’t. Stop. Listening.
Archie, it’s Saturday. I have stuff to do. Let me go.
It felt like when he sang Imagine in Idol semifinals.
Everything was perfect: the suit, the acoustic vibe, the emotion, the riffs.
In addition, the song is so entrenched in Latin culture that it felt as if he was telling everyone: Yes, I am Latino, and I respectfully offer you my talent through one of our best songs.
I was on the fence regarding Archie. Not anymore.

“I am surprised how many people are commenting that they are proud of David, as if he’s the world’s nephew. I wonder how many people post that they are proud of David Cook or Adam Lambert or Kris Allen when they have a strong performance.”

You can say it anytime you want to if you want.

Wow. That was really beautiful. The first time I’ve been truly moved by one of his performances. I can’t believe he’s wasting time singing that pop dreck when he could be performing stuff like this.

  • lovemymatthew

David I am very very proud of you and your performance last nite was stunning. Again, i am very very proud of you and I’ll say it a thousand times, I still feel it is not enough. Actually not only because of last nite’s performance which was just stunning, but I am very very proud of you because of the person you are.

  • revcat

No one sees Miley Cyrus, or Coldplay, or Sean Kingston in concert and thinks ‘I’m so proud of her/him/them,’

Watching the growth of Idol contestants and becoming emotionally connected with them during the process in a good way (such as rooting for them, being proud of them, being happy for them) is one of the major drawing points of American Idol.

I am rooting for all of my favorite artists to do well, not just the AI contestants. However, I really wasn’t aware of Miley, Coldplay or Sean before they became famous so it’s not the same thing. The AI contestants will move on, and some of them will become household names to people who never watched Idol and yes, I will be proud!

It’s kinda like: I knew them when (even though I really didn’t I feel like I did!).

  • brewster

Hell yes, I am not ashamed to say that I too am very, very proud of David Archuleta, his talent and who he is as a person. I am proud to be an unabashed fan.

  • pam05

A breathtaking, gobsmacked, spine tingling performance by David Archuleta. His Christmas Album, “Christmas from the Heart” which drops Oct. 13, will have a song in Spanish and French, Lord help us we are in for a wild ride!!!

  • abms

David Archuleta’s performance of ‘Contigo en la Distancia’ at the 2009 ALMA Awards show was flawless. His beautiful rendition of this Spanish song was by far the best performance of the evening! David sang with emotion and passion. His vocals were smooth and sultry. The audience erupted into applause and cheers when David was finished. If they didn’t know who David Archuleta was at the beginning of the evening, I am certain they won’t forget him now.

  • houstonrufus

Wow, the reaction to this performance has been fun to watch! ha!! Go David!

  • golcook

I agree, he could be a great crossover (like shakira or nelly furtado), and he has an excellent pronunciation in both english and spanish.

So, If you didn’t understand the song in spanish, here’s the translation:

Contigo a la distancia (With you at the distance).

There’s no such moment of the day
That I could drift myself apart from you
    The world seems different
When you’re not by my side.

    There’s no beautiful song
    In which you don’t appear
I don’t want to listen it
If you don’t do it too.

    You have become
    Part of my soul
    Nothing comforts me anymore
If youreï »’ not by my side.

    Far beyond your lips
Of the sun and of the stars
    With you at the distance
    My beloved one, I am.

    With you at distance
My beloved one, I am, oh
    With you.

    Awesome performance!!!!

  • MollyAnnMay

What a lovely, heartfelt performance with a beautiful vocal. Bravo David!

Interesting — from reading comments it looks like I may be in the minority — I’ve really enjoyed all the pop songs I’ve heard DA sing. I’m a long time fan of shiny, shiny pop, and his is some of the shiniest I’ve heard lately, not least because there isn’t a glimmer of autotuning in it anywhere. But I wouldn’t complain if he wanted to go this route once in a while. It suits him.

  • KathyH

Oh, I’m with you, MollyAnnMay. I’ve enjoyed the HECK out of David’s pop album. Am looking forward to the Christmas album, and then whatever else comes next. For me, with David, it is largely about the voice and then about musical choices.

  • frogcooke

I love the pop stuff as well. But I love pop music haha.

Aww, so its wrong to be proud of Archie now? Booo. LOL.

I never though the decision to market Archie to teens was that complicated. He looks young, he’s cute as all get out, and he’s actually wholesome (as opposed to marketed as wholesome like most Disney stars lol) so it was a no brainer.

Either way, he sounds great on stuff like this. Go Archie!

  • flicker

Yeah, marketing him to teens is no mystery at all, and he has to be young, because that’s what he is; I totally understand that. But I’m not a teen, and his CD wasn’t interesting to me. I love him singing this kind of thing, though.

  • LJA

The song is called “Contigo en la Distancia”, a classic bolero, very known in Latin America.

  • abbysee

Oh lord, that was spine tingling perfection. My heart is racing, it was really that darn good!

Two wonderful things I noticed, the smile on the guitarists face when David was bringing it home, and afterwards the awe of the truly incredible Rita Moreno, she got it, and she liked it! So did I! Bravo, Mr. Archuleta.

For the record, I enjoyed David’s cd, I just thought as usual that the first single after crush was the wrong one. But that is par for the idol course.

David’s performance has been getting a lot of buzz. Even Perez Hilton has a video clip of it on his website. That site gets a lot of hits. So this is great!
    http://perezhilton.com/2009-09-19-archie-will-give-you-chills

Perez, who has almost 1.5 million followers, twittered about his performance as well…

@DavidArchie Wow. Your performance of “Contigo En La Distancia” at the ALMA awards was phenomenal!!! Gave me chills! Good job, Archie!

@DavidArchie You should consider doing an album of Spanish love songs, like LuisMi!

  • heidijoy

I must add that I’ve enjoyed David’s album and listen to it while driving .daily and other times at home. I actually enjoy many of his songs vs what’s on the radio here.
Let me go is a favorite that hasn’t even seen the light of day on radio or in concert. I like the beat
I think many adults assume all are just for teens because of Crush . Of course you can have a crush at any ‘age. I took family ages 10-70 to Archie’s live concert and we had a blast.

This performance was breathtaking as I’ve already mentioned, but I don’t see the need to compare. I enjoy it all and am so proud of David.

What a beautiful performance. I’m so happy that he is getting recognition. This performance really makes me look forward to his Christmas album. I think it is going to be beautiful.

Oh wow, Achuleta sounds and looks better than Il Divo.
We are getting his Christmas album.

We are getting his Christmas album.

    Me too!!

  • Reflections On Life

the voice and clarity of an angel. love how this was almost acapella.

  • OldHag

The problem with David is the same as with Jordan, their voices are perfect for songs that are much more mature than their physical ages. Idol propelled them into stardom before they were old enough to sing the types of songs they should be singing to match their voices. Both have voices that should be singing songs of mature inspiration or angst, and both are absolutely spell-bounding singing those types of songs, but when you look at them singing them it is a little disconcerting. In Archuleta’s case it is even a bigger disconnect because he also looks younger than his physical age. He looks very, very nice in this clip, and I like how he is dressed, but he still looks much younger than even 18. When you see someone that young singing, you expect songs like Crush. When you hear him sing songs like this you can’t help but to think his voiced is being wasted on songs like Crush.

  • ghl

    Thanks Ozarka,

Here are some beautiful high resolution pics of David on the red carpet’ ¦
    http://snarkyarchies.blogspot.com/2009/09/new-hq-alma-pics.html

He is lucky to have naturally gorgeous looks and skin. To readers of this blog (average age is 40? just like American Idol age?), he is just a next door neighbor BOY. But for young viewers, he is a good looking HEARTTHROB. On his Youtube videos, you will see thousands of comments from young people expressing their love for this guy.

When you hear him sing songs like this you can’t help but to think his voiced is being wasted on songs like Crush.

It wasn’t a waste of voice to sing Crush. His voice makes Crush the mega hit song. His low voice at the beginning of Crush sets the mood, which is my favorite part and then reaches to the climax. This mature performance shows again his versatility to sing different styles of songs and it’s like a diva, Christina Aguilera sings powerful ballads as well as pop songs. Think about X-tina singing diva songs all the time. Boring.

BTW, I am glad millions of people finally watched his mature and lost looks that his fans love when he performs. He is somewhere out of this world when he is lost and takes viewers to there with him.

  • Kipper

I believe that “place” he takes us is Heaven – and he makes you never want to leave! David transforms into a man on stage when he sings songs such as this. When you meet him in person, he is back to being the boy he really is. We call him the man/boy for that reason. David is “the” most fascinating singer ever!

David Archuleta’s Stunning ALMA Awards Performance
    Sunday September 20, 2009

Even if you are not typically a fan of Latin music, this is a performance to see. This year’s ALMA (American Latino Media Arts) Awards were televised last Friday and featured a stunning performance from former American Idol runner-up David Archuleta. He won the award for Male Music Rising Star. When David Archuleta started to sing it quickly became obvious why he was deserving of such an accolade. He performed the song “Contigo en la Distancia.” The song is most closely associated with Mexican Latin pop star Luis Miguel. Now 18, David Archuleta sings with impressive maturity in voice and demeanor. This is one of the best performances of his career to this point. Look for a Spanish language track on David Archuleta’s upcoming Christmas collection Christmas From the Heart.

I am not bothered when David sings songs that some feel are beyond him because of his age or lack of life experience. Many have been troubled, I know, feeling that he cannot legitimately sing about something he has never experienced. For me though, the natural extension of that logic would mean that Haley Joel Osment should not have been in the Sixth Sense unless he had actually seen dead people.

Singing and acting are similar in that they are performances where artists step into another’s shoes and portray the emotion of that situation or song. And that is precisely why I believe David is gifted and brilliant! He does this so convincingly…so breathtakingly at times, as it was on Friday night.

Very good point! That’s one of the lamest objections I’ve ever heard. There are a lot of songs that many people shouldn’t sing if they first need to experience whatever the song is about. To start with, nobody could sing the US National Anthem because it addresses an event in history that nobody currently living witnessed. Neither David Bowie nor Adam could have sung “Life on Mars” because they’ve never been there.

I often think people who complain that somebody needs to experience something to be able to sing about it really basically dislike the singer and are looking under every rock to find something they can gripe about.

The Christmas album just cracked into the overall best sellers top 100 list on Amazon. He’s at 99. No biggie really, but kind of nice.

  • ozarka

I just checked. He’s moved up to #93.

  • JOJOSIE

I really enjoyed this performance as I just listened and did not watch the video. I just can’t connect the voice to the very young person who is singing, so it’s much better for me to just listen.

  • archie17

Umm…breathtaking…beautiful….gorgeous. I really have no words to describe it…or him at that moment. Man.

  • Kipper

Ah yes, my favorite American Idol of all time singing Spanish! David is just incredible! If you’re not familiar with his current album, listen to “To Be With You” for those beautiful vocals. It’s a good place to start. And then there’s the much-anticipated Christmas Album coming soon!

    WE LOVE YOU, DAVID! BRAVISSIMO!

Now Christmas album is climbing to #57 best sellers top 100 list on Amazon. It will soon be higher and higher after Oct. 13 when the album is released.
