It was really a great night. David did a super job. He was all over the stage. He had a lot of fans there, which was very cool. It was great to hear him sing songs from his own album. You can tell he’s gotten very comfortable singing them. He closed his set with a few bars from Silent Night acapella that the crowd loved. The radio station that hosted the concert closed their morning show this morning complimenting David’s voice and played his Silent Night. Awesome night for David in Houston. I have a feeling he won more fans. We heard as much from people there.

  • ozarka

Thanks for the recap Houston. Can you tell us who the other performers were and how well they were received? Was David the first act, second, … last?

  • IGetCranked

Thanks for that houston! Your recap is just what I was hoping for with these Jingle balls… new fans and impressing the radio stations. Is your morning show the Kidd Kraddick show?

  • houstonrufus

David was the first one out. The others were Gavin DeGraw, Colbie Caillet, and Rihanna with Chris Brown as a special guest. To be honest, after David performed, we wandered around and socialized. Like I said, there were many more David fans there than I was expecting. I met a lot of cool people. So we kind of got caught up in hanging out. I would imagine all the performers were well-received. I was very happy with David’s reception. His fans showed up and the crowd gave him a great reception. We heard several people around us say things like, “He can really sing!” And “If his album is this good, I’m going to buy it.” I looked around and saw a lot of people singing the words to his songs, so clearly he had a lot of fans there. And you could really hear the crowd sing along to Crush. Silent Night was gorgeous. The crowd came to a hush so they could hear his voice. It was great.

This was not Kidd Kraddick. This was Roula and Ryan, the morning DJs for 104.

  • ozarka

Was his album available for sale at the venue?

  • houstonrufus

That’s a good question. I don’t know. I think I saw some people holding it but I’m not sure if they brought it with them or bought it there. I bet it was for sale. Nick Lachey hosted and he did give David’s album a shout-out when he introduced him telling everyone that David’s album was in stores and to go buy it.

  • IGetCranked

Thanks for the info houston! Very exciting for David!

Review from a bloger, fun to read:

For all the pop edge that Rihanna ended with, American Idol runner-up Archuleta kicked off the evening with a five-song set that boasted a gooey marshmallow center. And sprinkles. And a cherry on top. He’s just that adorable.

But so much sweetness doesn’t make for an arresting live performance. Much like he did during his Idol run, Archuleta seemed awkward and nervous between songs. Every sentence was padded with a series of “um”s and “whoa”s.

The girls, however, loved him, squealing at every hand gesture and comment. Pink Santa hats (available, for a price, in the lobby) twitched with excitement.

Hit single Crush drew the loudest screams during Archuleta’s brief set, which he ended with a warm, fuzzy, a cappella rendition of Silent Night. The only thing missing was a choir robe.

And now, a 10-year-old’s snap review, courtesy of my niece, Celeste:

David Archuleta: (Silence.) She was hypnotized. He was ranked No. 1 at the end of the evening.
Colbie Caillat: I like her, but this long? Kill me now.
Gavin DeGraw: Wake me up when he sings Chariot. (He was ranked last. Great. minds.)
Rihanna: Wake me up when Chris Brown comes on. (I did, however, spy her singing along to a few songs.)
Chris Brown: (Bolted out of her chair for an ecstatic sing-along.)

Apparently, as reported on other sites, David’s earpiece didn’t work so he couldn’t hear the band. Also, they told him that he had time to do one more song hence SN. Since he didn’t rehearse another song, he just sang acapella.

He’s learned to go with the flow and compensate just fine without an earpiece because he sounded great.

Also, 10-year-old Celeste FTW! Looks like she preferred David and Chris Brown. Supposedly they’re quite different in styles but there you go.

Edited: houstonrufus: Thanks for your recap! It’s awesome that David is making new fans at these concerts.

^For real…. question: how did they found out about the ear piece thingy and why he didn ´t practice with the band, can you give any information, please?

    Thank you…

  • houstonrufus

I thought David did great. I’ve seen tons of David’s performances. His stage presence has come along way. He was all over the stage. He has gotten more and more comfortable. This same writer went bananas over Rihanna. Well, David is not ever going to work the stage like Rihanna. And thank god for that. David is David. He had tons of fans there, young and old, and they loved his set. And most importantly, you know that stuff between the talking, the SONGS and the SINGING? Well, that stuff sounded awesome.

  • LK08

He seemed to do fine before this song. Oh well, if they can’t find something to criticize about his singing, they seem to have to find something to criticize.

  • ozarka

He sounded great even without the ear piece. He didn’t seem that awkward to me in between songs, just sweet and down to earth. His demeanor is very endearing. I have no problem at all with his in-between songs banter. Besides, they came to hear him sing, not speak. At least, the reviewer had nothing negative to say about his actual singing. Overall, it was a very positive review for David. The reviewer was not as enthusiastic about Gavin DeGraw’s set.

^For realà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦. question: how did they found out about the ear piece thingy and why he didn ´t practice with the band, can you give any information, please?

I saw it at Snarky’s and FOD but you have to go into their posts and it is a whole different experience to extract any info from the personal posts.

  • serenade

His stage presence has come along way. He was all over the stage. He has gotten more and more comfortable.

I saw the videos and I have to agree. As for that blog, for someone who clearly wasn’t a David fan and had that AI bias right off in their review of David, which always colors the review for me and makes me roll my eyes, I felt he came in a clear third to them after Chris and Rihanna. And it was actually nice of them to admit the niece put him first because he actually seemed to give her opinion some importance. IMO, kids in particular have a short attention span so if you can keep their attention through a set, you’re doing something right.

David also got a positive official review from Sacramento and that reviewer did admit he’s improved since AI.

I still read the occasional harsh Carrie Underwood reviews. She’s sold millions of records and people still find something to criticize in her shows. I don’t think performers are ever everyone’s cup of tea. But most people find her and her vocals chops amazing and that’s what counts. Same goes for David A.

Yay my favorite fangirl, aka Jeanette McCurdy, blogs:

I went to a Christmas tree lighting benefiting Children with HIV/AIDS last night. It was so sad to watch the montages people had put together and hear them speak about it all. I worked with the man who coordinated the event on a different charity (a Pancreatic cancer walk/run) a couple months back. He is really nice and cool! And guess who was performing? David Archuleta! Yup! He sang a couple Christmas songs and some of his songs from his CD. I must say, when he sang à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Oh Holy Nightà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (my favorite Christmas song), I could barely hold back the tears. It was a moving performance.

    She is adorable!!!! :wub_tb:

  • http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/profile.php?id=587900002&ref=name cruzceleste

Here E! put together a little article with the video of O Holy Night:

David Archuleta Bitten by Acting Bug After iCarly Gig

Add David Archuleta to the list of singers who want to act.

The American Idol star, 17, says he got a taste of actingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ and he liked ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ when he recently shot a guest spot on Nickelodeon’s iCarly.

“I think it would be fun to do more,” Archuleta told me Saturday at the Holiday of Hope tree-lighting ceremony in Hollywood, which benefited children’s HIV/AIDS organization One Heartland. “It’s interesting. I’d love to do it and get into character and have lines to say.”

He certainly didn’t have to do much to get into character for iCarly.

“It was just a quick appearance as myself, but it was a lot of fun,” Archuleta said. “I know I’m not the greatest actor or anything.” (You can decide for yourself when the episode airs in the spring.)

For now, Archuleta has a crazy schedule to contend with. He’s been crisscrossing the U.S. and Canada to perform at radio station holiday concerts.

“But I don’t think we have [work] really planned around the Christmas holiday,” he said. “That’s when you really need to spend time with your family.”

And then it will be back to work. He lists fellow American Idoler Jordin Sparks as someone he’d like to work with, as well as Jason Mraz.

“Jason would be an amazing person to collaborate with, but I feel I have some growing and maturing to do before I get to that point,” Archuleta said. “Maybe someday.”

So true. Once critics and cynics get in their minds that “robotic” is the term to describe an artist, they rarely stray from that becoming robotic in their tired and recycled reviews of every performance for years on after. I’m sure even when Archie is like 30 and probably still performing, people will still refer to him as that pageant kid that got his start on Idol. :wacko_tb:

  • IdolFanatic

Okay seriously, Works For Me live totally kicks all kinds of ass! I love it!

I still read the occasional harsh Carrie Underwood reviews. Sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s sold millions of records and people still find something to criticize in her shows.

Selling millions of records means she’s immune to negative reviews? Critics who go to her shows are critiquing her performances, not her records. Taylor Swift is selling her new album at an incredible clip right now, but I’ve seen her live performances, and they are pretty bad, at least in my opinion.

And of course, your mileage will always vary, which is why 2 people will have a completely different opinion on the same performance. For folks who only require dulcet tones, Carrie’s performances are more than fine. But some folks want more than that.

I think it’s definitely one of those “Your Mileage May Vary” deals, so I don’t believe those writers who criticize Carrie’s live performances are full of it, they just have a different set of criteria than others when it comes to seeing an artist live.

I think the same goes for Archie. People who only care about good singing won’t care if he does it standing on his head. Others…may want a few performance skills thrown into the bargain. Again, YMMV.

  • IdolFanatic

I always wondered what the YMMV stood for. Now I know! :) Good point. Taylor Swift is a great example of that. I guess I just get a little frustrated with the people that insist that people like Carrie or Archie are still the same performer they were on Idol, which is not true if you really look back at those videos to now.

On another note, I totally LOVE Nick Lachey and think it’s way cool that he gave Archie’s album a shout out. He’s another male pop singer that I think is a great vocalist and of course it doesn’t hurt that he’s totally hot :) I would love for him and Archie to maybe work together sometime. They both have that smooth, soulful pop/r&b type of voice that they could sound awesome on a duet or something.

  • Tess

I’ve been around for a long time and been to my fair share of concerts and live performances. I find it interesting that so many critics, whether professional or not, seem to critique with respect to the “current” cultural tastes of the very average listener. IMHO a great many people go to concerts, not to hear a singer, but to have their fundamental base feelings titillated. They can’t seem to enjoy something unless all of their senses are being pounded and blasted at the same time. Hence the silly back-up dancers, the fireworks and light shows, the all to suggestive tactics of the lead singers, etc. Entertainers who find it necessary to go this route will often get good reviews because they are fitting into the “norm”. Prime examples of this are Madonna and Britney, neither one with any real singing ability, and a host of rocker guys and groups.

The true “singer”, you know that person with great chops who stirs your senses just by the sound of their voice, will never be given the credit their instrument deserves. The majority of the music buying public are tone deaf and untrained and don’t have the ability to listen much less appreciate what is musically good or great. They only want to be “entertained” through the use of gimmicks and sight stimulation.

I’ve heard countless “sheep” ex tole the virtues of the flashy entertainer because that is what they are told and sold. Most critics only write what the untrained masses want to read and hear, otherwise they would be out of a job soon enough.

  • IdolFanatic

When did he give David ´s album a shout out???

houstonrufus mentioned it in the following comment which is in this thread:

Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a good question. I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know. I think I saw some people holding it but Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not sure if they brought it with them or bought it there. recap from last nights concert, they recap everyone, here is davids part

This kid seems to be even better live than he is on CD. David Archuleta let his sweet voice shine on songs from his debut album and even delivered an awesome rendition of a Christmas classic: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Silent Night.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

The majority of the music buying public are tone deaf and untrained and donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have the ability to listen much less appreciate what is musically good or great. They only want to be à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“entertainedà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ through the use of gimmicks and sight stimulation.

What’s musically “good” or “great” is not carved in stone. It’s really a matter of opinion, I think.

I see it as different strokes for different folks. I don’t see anything wrong with a stage show that’s just pure spectacle. Las Vegas has been thriving on that sort of performance for years. It’s nothing new.

It’s really just a matter of what people prefer–it has nothing to do with being “tone deaf” or untrained, imo. Some may love the pure singer, others want a visual and musical experience, others may just like the dancing. I’d say critics are also varied in their tastes as well–just like the average consumer.

The true “singer”, you know that person with great chops who stirs your senses just by the sound of their voice, will never be given the credit their instrument deserves.

I’ve been reading criticism for many years, as well as going to lots of live performances, and based on my personal experience, I have to disagree with that statement.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

I guess I just get a little frustrated with the people that insist that people like Carrie or Archie are still the same performer they were on Idol, which is not true if you really look back at those videos to now.

Yes, I agree! they both have improved since Idol, imo…

  • sma11ie

I couldn’t agree more with MJ. I don’t know which critics you’re reading, Tess, but I don’t think critics tend to “write what the untrained masses want to hear”, because if there’s one refrain about critics I’ve heard on this site, it’s their inexplicable need to put down popular music in an effort to maintain some lame form of critic’s cred. Also, I don’t think rocker guys and groups, or the silly back-up dancer type shows consistently get free passes from the critics. That’s just not true.

IMHO a great many people go to concerts, not to hear a singer, but to have their fundamental base feelings titillated.

That part I kind of agree with. If I just wanted to hear the singer, I’d put on the CD. There’s a reason it’s called a show. That said, I also want see the performance and to hear the singer– the voice is a crucial component of the music! And what I look for in music is in fact, to have my fundamental feelings– ok, I wouldn’t choose the word titillated, but yeah, I guess I want the music to move me on a base level. Sometimes that could mean a performance where the singer is just standing there and interpreting a song, and other times, it will involve my other senses. I like to be entertained in different ways. That doesn’t sound crazy to me, but maybe that makes me sheep. Baaah.

ETA: I just want to say, I’ve been enjoying the links on this thread. O Holy Night is my fave and Archie killed it. *tears* Also, he’s getting super comfortable and good with these interviews– WTG! AND, I also think Carrie and Archie are good live performers.

  • hermy

I agree with mj, everyone will have different tastes. There is really no definition for ‘good music’ since everyone has different tastes. That’s what is so amazing about music; it affects people in different ways.

Personally, I am frikin addicted to these performances lol. He has improved SO much since AI. love love these. I want to go to one of these concerts; I hope he comes to KC someday.

  • LK08

I guess I just get a little frustrated with the people that insist that people like Carrie or Archie are still the same performer they were on Idol, which is not true if you really look back at those videos to now.

I completely agree with this. I want critics to evaluate artists on what they are doing now, not just some preconceived notion of what they thought or heard they were like during Idol. If Taylor Swift stinks in a live performance, please have the guts to go against the popular flow and say so.

The true à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“singerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ , you know that person with great chops who stirs your senses just by the sound of their voice, will never be given the credit their instrument deserves.

If you just go on the fan board for David A, you would find that there are many, many people who have been smitten by his voice and have been drawn back into music, both musicians and nonmusicians alike. So, even though people may not be able to articulate or give reasons why they like great chops, many (if they will allow their mind to get beyond their biases) will somehow notice.

  • RV65

One will be stress-free if he will just enjoy the artistry of a favorite. Couldnt care less about the opinion of anyone else as long as I enjoy my favorte’s music. I have accepted it as fact that each has his own musical taste and preference (I do like listening to artists of various genres depending on my mood and what Im doing). I have learned to just express my appreciation for an artist and not try to convince anyone to like him or her. In that way Im happy. Cheers!

  • ozarka

Last night Hollywood 411 showed a clip of David singing “Silent Night” at the Holiday of Hope Tree Lighting Ceremony.

Also last night, on the show TV Watercooler Randy Jackson was interviewed. They got to talking about David Osmond and the talent coming out of Salt Lake City this coming season. Randy pointed out, “You know we had our boy last season, our runner up Archuleta, David, ‘Archie,’ as we call him, from there.” They then showed of a clip of him, from a while back, walking on the treadmill thingy for the TV guide photo shoot.

Anything that gets his name and face out on the airwaves, regardless of how brief, is good exposure for David. :thumbup_tb:

I don’t think the link above will work with Mozilla Firefox. If you must use Firefox, use THIS LINK instead. The difference is you won’t be able to blow it up to full screen with the latter.
