Danny Gokey Releasing “Experimental” New EP In April

Danny Gokey confirms with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel plans to self-release an EP in April.  The yet-to-be-titled 6 or 7 song EP will feature several different styles of music.

“It’s an experimental project to see what the fans like,” Gokey said of the EP. “There’ll be country on it, but there’ll be different styles on it. There’ll be contemporary, and maybe a pop song.”

There will be a longer interview posted on JSOnline soon, where Danny discusses is friend Jamal Rogers, who is a major contender on this season’s The Voice

Well. Interesting approach to Genre Shopping. Do they have something set up to collect the fans feedback? Otherwise – how will they know which style people prefer the most? Of course, the possibility of no consensus always exists – even fans disagree, all the time…but they have to buy the EP first, so I guess that part is a win/win.

Good luck with that project, Danny.

lol  This sounds like Danny is using this EP as a sort of “audio poll” of his fans.  Does that mean that he will go in the musical direction that the majority of his fans like?  Not very “artistic” IMO.

Wow, guy has no inner direction whatsoever.

  • Anonymous

It sounds like Danny isn’t sure what direction he wants to go with his music.

I’m sure his fans will like this EP, though.

LOL Please don’t hate me but this crosses my mind upon reading this blog.. Does Danny even know which style of music is which? He has a good voice but he always come across as one with minimum knowledge of music.. Hence he doesn’t even know what direction to go into.. At his age and he is still clueless about his direction and like fans to tell him, I think he is going to need a lot of luck to make it in this tough music business. So good luck Danny!

    He’s still around?

Dude, if you don’t know what genre you want to do by now, you never will.

As one who could not stand Gokey on The Show, I have a suggestion.  Forget about genres and try out a couple of other personalities.

LOL HAHA! That’s exactly what I thought.

I kinda still like Danny, but he lacks a real sense of self-awareness. I would hope that wear off, but I guess he is still kinda clueless. Heh.

  • chearts77

I think needs to go CCM and stop trying to appeal to mainstream.

  • CSFan

If Danny doesn’t have somebody telling him who he is he obviously has no clue. Will he be setting up a poll like mj does here after AI performance nights? Maybe a focus group or two? Perhaps a coin flip if all else fails? ;)

while it’s not a bad idea to ask fans, it doesn’t seem wise to me in a PR perspective in the music biz

I was just about to post this.  There are a lot of successful indie artists who release albums that have songs that represent different genres, but they are smart enough to tell people that that’s who they are.  They aren’t doing it because they want to please everyone, especially since they know that by not choosing a genre they are ensuring that no major record label is going to sign them.  And they aren’t doing it because they are unsure about who they are as artists, they are doing it because they love and understand music, and don’t want to be boxed into just one genre.

Danny should check out some of these artists, even though it may not help, since the problem might be that Danny just doesn’t understand music or himself.

In my experience, those who put out art to please others are less successful than those who put out art they enjoy.

Oh, good. We are finally going to get that r&b-soul-gospel-latin sound with awesome beats, that he promised us after Idol.

    *ahem*

Well, ok.  Yeah, I agree the way it is phrased in that article kind of makes him look adrift-whether he said it in that fashion (and believe me, even though I am a Danny music fan, I can believe he did-man just says whatever pops into his brain sometimes :/  )  And saying that he will ‘see what his fans like’ is dumb.  He probably just wants to please his fans-after all; who wouldn’t want a well done album that includes music of different types?  Thus the popularity of many of those compilation albums.

And it isn’t going to impress a potential label, IMO.But he truly is one who likes all genres and can sing all genres (yes, even country with twang- I’ve heard it live).  The fact that he is a great live performer is partly due to this. He has scored a lot of private engagements catering to all ages and audience types because of that fact-including his Idol, the Chuck Norris big Kick Start benefit in Houston one year ago!

The crowd looks pretty engaged this past weekend at the Vision Expo:

He has said time and time again that he doesn’t want to be boxed in.  He is probably a dinosaur….music when I was growing up had more fluid boundaries. Now you hear such cookie cutter stuff because of radio corporations…so much sounds the same whether it is pop or country or whatever.  If you play the game and get established in your genre, then sometimes you can sing whatever you want (like Carrie U. putting out a 100% pop song to country radio).Chearts, he could go CCM easily…..heaven knows fans hound him daily on when he will put out a gospel or CCM album :/  But the fact that he hasn’t yet leads me to think his heart really is in secular music-whether secular music can provide for him, who knows. I’m sure I’ll enjoy the EP and he can get some income to provide for the 20 kids he wants :/  What it will accomplish beyond that remains to be seen.

Interview …ehhh! Sometimes being a fly on the wall during interviews would be fun as some of those answers seemed clipped.

    Wheee!! to new music :)

This doesn’t surprise me at all; Danny seemed to blindly jump into country music even though he didn’t consider himself a country artist on AI. It’s not surprising he’d move around again once his short-lived success in the format ran out.

One thing AI fans love is people who know who they are as artists…Danny seems to have no clue who he is, and he is not going to convince anyone he belongs in any genre if he can’t even figure it out. I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt the first time around, but now he’s just coming across as clueless and a little desperate.

  • larc

Not only is Danny clueless, but he puts out a sampler EP to advertise the fact.  When it comes to buying one, include me out.  I hope he’s getting a great deal on it because otherwise he’s likely to lose his shirt.  Doesn’t he have anybody in the know to advise him or is he just not listening?

Danny’s music and his “foundation” are all over the map. R&b, soul, country, latin, homelessness, sex trafficking ????, music, arts, blah, blah, blah…..no money, no fame. A movement? Bon Jovi light??? Kinda feel sorry for him…trying so hard to make it.

I’m a fan of Danny, but I’ll admit, I have wondered how he is going to attract a new label with an assortment of musical styles on his new EP.

But, the man has a way of landing on his feet.  And I’m sure I’ll enjoy the EP and its musical journey he takes us on.  He has an interest in all kinds of music and can sing anything.  Seriously.

Who knows, maybe this unusual approach will be just the thing for Danny.

  • steph6449

I’m not sure exactly what Danny means by experimental. But he has said before (going well back into early 2011) that vocally he felt somewhat constrained in recording with RCA, and to some degree also in song selection.  Will be interested what he comes up with on this project, but long-term I’d like to see him connecting with a label that will back him to put out the type of songs he is capable of delivering as a vocalist.

I think Danny has done quite well for a third placer 3 years after his season.  Especially for a season that was very competitive and controversial.  He is still here, making a living-hasn’t gone back to truck driving yet ;)  And as far as ‘fame’- well, his wedding was a full page in People magazine- I bet he never envisioned that-not bad.
He may over reach with what he wants to accomplish (especially with his foundation), but heh- he has accomplished a lot.  He sold a very decent amount of albums almost 250k,, he had a top 30 and 40 hit with RCA. He had a featured role in a prime time movie, which is still available on DVD.  He has had numerous endorsement deals and is on his second year with WI Vision.  He has always wanted his own eyewear line- now he has one:

    From the Holiday Reporter:

His foundation has lofty goals; but I would never have thought he’d have a huge building in Nashville to house the homeless and run programs.  And his Music and ARts program for inner city kids is going gangbusters in Milwaukee- the kids are very busy making appearances :)

He just hosted his second annual charity cruise in the Caribbean, which was a dream.  And he has a team running the Rock n Roll Marathon for Sophia’s Heart (as is Danny himself)-another goal reached.

Just because one has a lot of goals doesn’t mean they have to achieve every single one. Personally- I’d rather my kids over reach than under reach.

Even without a label right now, he periodically appears on TV still….next appearance is the Dove Awards with J. Castro, Ruben, others.  And after that he will be on the Outdoor channel featuring an “All Star Cast” new show:

Hosted by Eric Rhodes, All Star Cast is a celebrity-driven, reality fishing show featuring “All Star” guests that “cast” in various fishing locales worldwide. Every episode, Eric takes guests and viewers on exciting adventures all around the world with stunning aerial and underwatervideography, unexpected reality moments, light comedy, and always intense fishing action with an epic feel.UPCOMING EPISODESCosta Rican deep sea fishing with American Idol?s Danny Gokey.

I just have to add that the Milwaukee Sophia’s Heart Choir and Dance Team is truly awesome.  The kids design their own dance routines and sound great, too. I’ve seen them perform with Danny three or four times and independently a few more.

I agree with alot of this, many spend a lot of time talking about what cant be done and Danny just keeps going forward. I think you have covered many of the things that Danny wanted to accomplish and that actually came into fruition.

Thw road may be bumpy but it is never dull :)
