Danny Gokey performed a bunch of songs at 96.9 The Kat in Charlotte NC recently.

  • The station posted the videos up at their website, which you can check out HERE.

Danny sang 4 songs, including a new one called “I Believe” written by Kara DioGuardi. Kara writing Christian music? Who woulda thunk it.

The single, “My Best Days” will be available as a digital download December 22.

Danny also performed It’s Only but they did not list it on the site. I enjoyed all of Danny’s performances but my favorite is still My Best Days. Danny just sounds so comfortable and natural on that song and seems to really enjoy performing it. Also love watching his guitar player Def Santiago on My Best Days – he is always smiling and is quite good. I Still Believe is my least favorite so far. Probably was the first time he performed it and this is a song that I think would sound better recorded. I think he may be testing out some songs – he has a few months to decide what songs will go on his album.

Danny has been extremely busy this week on his promotional tour – visiting one to two radio stations a day and I believe performing a small set tonight in Raleigh, NC.

His schedule is now posted on http://www.dannnygokey.com.

Also, his spins on country radio are increasing and his song doesn’t go for official adds until December 12th and he shoots the video for My Best Days on December 17th and 18th.

That’s nice that Kara wanted to write a song for Danny. I still think that she had Danny in mind with “No Boundaries”. Kris and Adam both did a fine job with their recordings of it, but I think it would have suited Danny better. This “I Believe” song sounds like it is similarly challenging, that’s quite a range there. After one listen, I don’t like it as well as his other songs so far, but I could completely change my mind after I hear what they do with it in the studio. I still like “My Best Days” the best, I like both the studio and the live versions very much. Just a couple more weeks until it’s released!

That was cute that Danny had them waving their arms at the end. Brings back memories of the summer tour! I still watch the Boston “My Wish” every once in awhile…I loved MJ’s description of how he achieved a spiritual connection with the crowd during that song, and when the camera pulls back and you see all the waving arms with the lights, it’s really cool. I rarely go to concerts because of the crowd factor, but I am going to make an exception for Danny.

I agree with monte and Josie, that “I still Believe” is my least favorite song that Danny has sung so far. I don’t really care for any of the songs that I have heard that have been written by Kara.

I do think that Danny sounds good in the performance, though.

I really liked the version of “Tiny Life” that Danny did at The Kat, he sounded good in that version, and I think that is a pretty song. He also did “It’s Only” and a little of “Back At One” but neither one of those songs were posted on the site.

Danny has a concert in Raleigh today, where Michelle Branch will also be performing at. And he is also headlining Charity Ball event for Mercy Health Systems in Arkansas tomorrow, last year Martina McBride headlined this event. He’s staying busy, working hard and getting his name and music out there. I think that it will pay off for him.

I Still Believe is actually growing on me! I didn’t like it at first; I think because it is a very bluesy song that needs instrumentation; not just acoustical. But it sounds like it has promise, even though I’m afraid of what Kara has to offer after NoBo, lol.

I wish they would have posted Its Only; it was actually the most beautiful rendition (acoustical) that he’s done at radio stations so far.

Danny is so cute; I think he forgot he wasn’t at a big arena; he started laughing at himself when he told the small private radio station audience to start waving their arms. Love his laugh.

It was cute when he was interacting with the audience.

I think Kara did pretty well for Danny with this. It’s a more uptempo song, certainly suits where Danny is coming from, and could be a lot of fun with a full band behind it.

Danny’s performance tonight is at more of a club setting. I wonder if they will be bringing out the full band similar to what Danny had with him at the MSMC college anniversary concert he did in September. He had 7 or 8 musicians and back-up singers with him for that. Seemed like a lot of fun for them and for the audience.

Danny does seem to have a nice rapport with the audiences in these small settings. It was really obvious also in another video I saw where he sang Back at One to a large group of country music station staff in Salt Lake City. I agree about Def Santiago. He adds a lot of energy and interest to the instrumentals backing up Danny in these little acoustic shows they’re doing. He was also a lot of fun to watch at the MSMC event, even in the not-so-great quality videos that surfaced from that.

    Hmmm… I can’t get the videos to play. :(

I’m super happy for Danny and I can’t wait for his cd.

I hadn’t tried mj’s link as I heard these yesterday at the radio station site. But hmm, I get an error here also.

This is a direct link to the radio station’s page where the four performances from Danny’s set are featured.

I don’t see what is so surprising about Kara writing a Christian song. She is from a Catholic background, I understand, so I am sure that may have helped in writing the song. She has written for several Idols now, it seems. I think she keeps in mind what direction the individual Idol seems to be going and what their forte is, I guess, when she writes. I kind of like the “I Still Believe” in that it has that bluesy flavor that we heard from Danny on the show. I would like to hear more instrumentation, too. I also prefer “My Best Days Are Ahead of Me,” both acoustic and instrumental; and “It’s Only.” It looks like it will be an album that I will definitely buy. Thanks, fellow Danny fans, for keeping us up to date with his schedule.:-D

Thanks for providing that link Steph6449.

I am anxious to see more Danny performances. He keeps getting better and better. I love the beautiful tone of his voice. I have a feeling his album is going to be the black horse in the group of Idol debuts. He is really sounding so good these days.

Update from Danny’s non-profit foundation, Sophias Heart on twitter. Nice.

Through collaborative efforts, during the Thanksgiving holiday, Sophia’s Heart of Compassion was able to provide meals to over 2,000 people.
We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of our volunteers who helped with these events at Hales Corners Lutheran Church in Hales Corners, Wisconsin; Lakeshore Christian Church in Nashville, Tennessee and the L.A. Dream Center. Without you, we could not have done this!

Another version of I Believe is up on youtube, from a different radio tour performance this week. Interesting that this one was at a North Carolina HAC station, not country.

The station had previously posted their interview and a performance of MBD. In the interview with Danny they said they were big fans and their listeners were also according to polls they’d done during the AI season.

When I read all the outrage about hatred toward other idols and herculean efforts to empathize with their mistakes, I still wish the same had been afforded to Danny. However, I know he is over it and moving on and I should too.

I’m with you, in all that you said. I will do my best to concentrate on his career and support him the best I can.:-)

Thanks, steph6449, for the link.:-)Cool to see that stations of 2 different genres have had him on or are playing his music.

Yes, I understand exactly what you mean. But it has always been “Cool” to hate on Danny. He is not edgy, he is a guy of faith, and he is naive.
But, fortunately, he is an extremely strong person with a strong self image and he has persevered despite the above. Many people have eaten their words about Danny and will continue to do so.
I’m very excited about the path he is on and he seems very happy.

  • mistymtnhop

Thanks PJG. I know it is true. All the recent conversation about hypocrisy and double standards should just make me shake my head but, well, I’m having a hard time getting over the hypocrisy and double standards!

I do agree that Danny is doing well and as the saying goes, living well is the best revenge!

  • aek

I actually kinda like I Believe, too, pjg. I was ambivalent on the first listen, but then I put the headphones on and listened again. I think Danny sounds great on the song, and I love the guitar music. I’m not crazy about the lyrics, but overall I do enjoy this newest song, too.

I had wanted to see Danny in Raleigh tonight, but I couldn’t make it. It’s three and a half hours away, and I had a last minute babysitting issue. I hope we do get some videos of Danny’s performance tonight.

    Wait a minute… what’s going on, something’s missing in these comments…

Where’s the obligatory Danny hate? I miss it! Don’t make me to pretend I hate this guy that I actually really like, ’cause I’ll do it, I’ll call him names and hurl insults, lol.

Don’t mind me, I’m just a little cranky that I can’t get the video to play and haven’t heard these new songs yet. Still love ‘Best Days’ the best of what I’ve heard so far, and I’m happy that Danny is slowly but surely pushing forward. I admire his nice-guy optimism and his never-quit work ethic, and I agree with Bethlyn he could very likely be the season 8 dark horse (actually I’ve been saying for a while he’s likely to be this season’s Daughtry). Glad he’s getting more spins on radio even before the add date for the single and I think based on the quality of the song that trend will continue. I still think ‘Best Days’ is the best single so far from any season 8 alum.

Riding home from Raleigh concert. He was great. So relaxed, smiling, laughing. Crowd loved him. If he comes to your town go see him. My niece sat on the stage, Danny had wonderful rapport with the crowd. Signed autographs and took pictures with everyone.

  • thisisourturn

Can’t wait for the video for My Best Days, which is scheduled to be shot later this month. That should be a lot of fun. If the songs that Danny has premiered so far are any indication, his album should be “banging”. Extremely happy with the promotion Danny is getting from RCA Nashville, especially for a new artist. They are building on his strengths and are allowing him to perform the kind of music he enjoys.

Great to hear this went so well. I think it may have been Danny’s first appearance at a country music club with a large crowd. I also read tweets from both the City Limits club and radio station about tonight’s appearance by Danny:

Danny is in Arkansas today doing a big Mercy Me Charity Ball that Martina McBride did last year. HOpefully there will be vids; although there were none from that Black Tie Hob Nobble charity ball in Detroit a week ago.

Videos up from Danny’s performance at City Limits yesterday evening.
Really like the one of Tiny Life in particular, but he did well with all three songs that this person posted. Two of them seem like pretty difficult songs to perform live, also.
