Danny Gokey performed an 11-song set to an enthusiastic crowd at Saint Mary College in Newburgh, NY on Sunday.

It was his first concert since he wrapped up the American Idols Live tour with his fellow Top 10 contestants in Manchester, NH a few weeks ago.

Danny told the enthusiastic audience that he was heading into the studio Tuesday and Wednesday to record 5 singles for his upcoming album, scheduled to come out on 19R/Sony Nashville early next year.

His first single, according to recent twitters, is due in November.   Danny told Sunday’s crowd he’ll be working in the studio with “Carrie Underwood’s producer.”   Money us on Mark Bright, CEO of Word Records, who has produced for Carrie, and someone Danny has expressed an interest in working with.

After the jump, watch Danny perform Santana’s “Maria Maria” and “Smooth”.   Also, check out his performances of PTY,   My Wish, Life is a Highway and I Can Only Imagine.

I thought that Danny did a pretty good job at this concert. He looked like he was having a good time and the audience was into his performances. I am glad that it looks like Mark Bright will be producing his album, he’s a really good producer.

And I think that he will give Danny the guidance, and support he needs. And hopefully help him find some good songwriters.

I think that Danny has a good shot of doing decently when his album comes out. I could see him charting on both Billboard Hot 200 and the Billboard country charts. He wouldn’t have even have to sell an incredibly high amount of CD’s his first week to do that either. With a good debut single and decent promotion, I could see him debuting in the top 20 maybe better, on both charts.

Most of his RCA labelmates seem to be doing pretty good, including Chris Young who came from another reality talent show Nashville Star (winning the year he was up there.) I hope that RCA really works with him and tries to help him put out a good album and be successful.

I agree with this. I haven’t watched the performances, no youtube at work, but his song set from what I read last night seemed appropriate for him. When I read that he was singing “I Can Only Imagine”, I thought it was the perfect song for him. I heard it on my friends radio, and my first thought was that Danny could make a fortune doing music like it.

I really liked Danny’s voice at the start of the AI season, but got down on him during the season because I thought he wasn’t showing growth or making the most of his potential. However, seeing him on the tour, I thought he did a great job and was in my top 3 along with Adam and Matt.

I wish nothing but success for him and for all the idols from this season.

Thanks MJ for posting info on Danny’s concert.

I haven’t watched the videos yet but I did follow the tweets from the concert last night. Seems like Danny really had the crowd going and those who tweeted loved the concert. Danny also spent time after the show speaking with fans. That is exciting news about Danny working with Mark Bright. He has a great track record with Carrie’s albums and also produced for Rascal Flatts earlier albums. I know that Danny really wanted to work with him and am happy that it looks like he will. I think Danny could do quite well as a cross-over country/pop artist. He said he wants to put out good music for his fans.

  • tfmal

Good for you Danny. You have a lot of supporters.

  • lg

Good for Danny. He was my 1st fave but then I lost interest in the inspirational type stuff he was doing and fell for Mr. Lambert.

Mark Bright is obviously talented at what he does, but I just hope that Danny being based with a Nashville record co. means that his music will be more than just the Rascal Flatts, inspirational country-lite stuff. I mean I wanna hear that raw blues grit and I hope he keeps an open mind and capitalizes on that. Country has plenty of artists with a bluesy undercurrent.

  • lovemymatthew

tried to listen to this song but closed the link before I got to the singing, the rambling was sooo annoying.

  • sagi

I am sure there will be more than Rascal Flatts type songs, as it seems they are only trying to sell his voice with ready made songs that have already been written. Seems a bigger opportunity for the songwriters whose songs have been chosen than it is for Danny. If he is to have 5 songs recorded before the end of the month, that just means he is like a session recorder in that he is putting his voice to someone elses material. But it will be enough to get his foot in the door and hopefully he will have a bigger and more meaningful input in the making of his music in the future. He has a real shot being successful in the country field.

  • Renina

YAY! DANNY!! Seems like the concert last night was great, and his new band is AWESOME!!

I also believe that Danny has a real shot at success in the country music scene. If his label plays their cards right I’m sure he can be the male underwood coming out of idol.

Good luck to Danny. I look forward to his, Kris’s, Allison’s, and Matt’s upcoming albums!

    Seriously. LOL.

  • Q3

I have been hoping that Mark Bright would produce Danny since Danny first mentioned Nashville. Hope this is true!

Sounds like it was a great concert. I have gained a lot of respect for Danny after seeing him live. If he can work with people who can help him select the right music, arrangements (no harps!) and so on, I think he will do great.

And I can’t think of anyone better suited to Danny than Mark Bright!

  • cheesehead

wow he got signed ? lol

  • Squirrely

I’m very happy for Danny, he deserves success.

  • becausehelives

good for danny. The sound wasn’t so good but Danny looked good and relaxed. Hope someone posts matt’s concert in LA and Anoop’s NC fair when it happens. wish them all the best.

  • jpfan

Danny stop rambling. That said, I’m keeping my finger crossed that Mark Bright can get a good album together. Get Danny some of those heartfelt Rascall Flatts or Carrie songs and he’ll be fine.

  • yinyang

Wow, he’s going to record 5 singles in 2 days? I guess everything is ready to go, and he just needs to lay down the vocal track. That’s fast work, though!

  • CFIdolsfan

wow he got signed ? lol

Yes, and I’m excited for him. Go Danny!

  • dante

I loved Danny’s voice on the AI Tour this year and can see myself buying his CD. I wish him much success.

I love Danny singing Maria, Maria. Maybe it’s more the song. Anyhow I don’t think he butchered it, at least not when I’ve listened which is admittedly not very often. I just never care to hear him talk.at.all. I can’t imagine buying his album. I detest corporate country…Carrie’s included even though I love her. I just find what they put out shameful and embarrassing and ultimately having very little to do with real music. I’m sure I’m in the minority but so be it.

  • haruhi

    Good luck to Danny!

  • jpfan

Okay, I’m back digging Danny. His version of I heard It Through the Grapevine is FANTASTIC.

  • steph6449

That is a great thing for Danny to be working with a top Nashville producer like Mark Bright. He must be thrilled to death.
I was really impressed with the reports / videos from his concert last night, about which not a lot was known beforehand. Danny and his band actually did 14 different songs (there were three that weren’t in the total MJ gave), several of which were new ones that he hadn’t done before, or only in an AI group number in the case of Smooth. In addition to all the work that must have involved to plan and rehearse, Danny just came off the AI Tour less than two weeks ago without a break, and during the same period most likely has been preparing to record the new songs for his album.

There was a question above about the songs Danny may be recording this week. He’s said in interviews that he’s been collaborating to choose songs for a while, and he wants to try some songwriting if he can. Not all country artists write their songs, though; most of Rascal Flatts’ biggest hits, for example, were not written or even co-written by them. There are a ton of great songwriters in Nashville, and people are smart to use them.

  • blissful

Okay, I’m back digging Danny. His version of I heard It Through the Grapevine is FANTASTIC.

ITA. I’ve always loved his audition.

I hope he gets great songs ‘cuz it would be a shame to waste that voice. Please do not give him the KristyLeeCook treatment!

  • Kipper

Kris & Danny were my top picks for this Season. I hope Danny comes to Florida so I can attend his concert. Definitely want to support him, and can’t wait to hear his first single. I’m sure the studio version of his songs will be more than wonderful ~ can’t wait ~ LOVE his voice and his personality!

  • JosieX

I’m so happy for Danny, it sounds like he got a great band (assuming that they’re going to be with him for more than just this one performance), and it’s wonderful news about his producer. It’s great to know that his first post-tour event went so well.

  • steph6449

I don’t think anyone has heard definitely about the band, but the keyboard player was tweeting that he hoped it would be an ongoing relationship. The lead guitarist also put on his twitter profile that he is the guitar player for Danny, or something to that effect. Not all of them may be permanent. There was a tweet from Mandisa (what AI season was she?) that Danny had borrowed her drummer for the occasion, and she wanted him back, lol.

More details may leak out once the producer is on board and the recording sessions are underway.

  • monte

From watching the videos and reading reviews and tweets, it seems Danny was very relaxed and happy last night during his performance. His voice was rested and sounded great. I know many of his fans were hoping Mark Bright would be working with Danny. Hope we hear soon what songwriters he is working with.

  • PJG

Unfortunately, I had to pass on the concert because of my kid’s homecoming, but my two friends went, tweeted and gave recaps. I guess Danny sang 14 songs, including 4 he hadn’t sang during AI; I Can Only Imagine, Life Is a Highway, Aint too Proud to Beg, Smooth.
They said he had a great connection with the crowd; they’ve never heard so many people sing along at a concert for an extended period of time. They thought he looked like he was having a blast and was very relaxed.
Danny saw a college girl dancing in the front row during Maria, Maria and he pulled her up on stage to dance with him! Lucky girl; it was so sweet.
I also agree with lg’s earlier comment; I really hope he infuses his soul/country with the raw blues grit like he did in Come Rain/Shine- that’s the best part of his voice for me (SEXY!) and I really hope it doesn’t get lost in the country.
What’s wrong with the picture MJ posted? A little blurry but he sure looks good to me.

  • dante

I love his “Heard It Through The Grapevine” here.

  • lorenzo

Adam’s the one I can’t wait for, but I’ll get Danny’s, too. The guy’s talented, and I’ll get Matt’s.. and maybe Anoops.

    Thanks Mj, I love what you’re doin’…

    I’ve become a Danny fan. :)

  • canuck

Seems like a bit of a random place for a concert. I wonder why there?
And, it wasn’t very well promoted I thought.

Anyways, seems like the concert was a good one- so happy for Danny that things worked out in the end.

  • OutlandoGirl

    I didn’t know Danny KNEW 11 songs.

  • justjude

Good for Danny. With the right producer he will do well as he keeps on singing and learning the music!!! He has the voice!! I wish him the very best!
SO GIT YOUR SOUL ON DANNY!!!!!!

  • PJG

Correction to my earlier post-Danny sang “Signed,Sealed,Delivered” NOT “Beg”. Sorry.
I just read a tweet that gave me a clue why some find the picture above funny.
@Loonyluna00 I will put my trust in Father Gokey that we will find a time that is convenient for all to come together & worship his fine ass ‘

Didn’t realize some people affectionately called him “father”, lol. So maybe that is why some find the above pic funny?
At least those who like his voice, but not his “inspirational words” won’t have to worry about that on an album.

There must be some AI insider connection to Mt St Mary; I guess David Cook sang there also.

  • GaGaGlambert

Danny finally won me over after I saw him on tour this summer and I went to see his solo show on Sunday evening.

Backed by a six-piece band and two female back-up singers, one of whom he introduced as his sister-in-law, Danny was at his vocal best and easily sang his way through the hour and fifteen minute show without any signs of vocal strain that was often evident on tour. Dressed in black jeans and vest, light blue shirt, silver-gray boots and chains swaged on his right hip, he nimbly navigated the stage, smiled often and exuded a relaxed confidence that engaged the audience throughout his entire 14 song set.

The set ranged from familiar audition, American Idol and tour favorites, with additional Motown, contemporary Christian and country tunes included in the mix: P.Y.T ‘“ Michael Jackson, September ‘“ Earth Wind & Fire, Heard it Through the Grapevine ‘“ Marvin Gaye, Signed, Sealed Delivered, I’m Yours ‘“ Stevie Wonder, Ain’t Too Proud To Beg ‘“ Temptations, What Hurts the Most ‘“ Rascal Flatts, Jesus Take the Wheel ‘“ Carrie Underwood, I Can Only Imagine ‘“ MercyMe, Stand by Me ‘“ Ben E. King, Life is a Highway ‘“ Rascal Flatts, Maria, Maria & Smooth ‘“ Carlos Santana, You Are So Beautiful ‘“ Joe Cocker, My Wish ‘“ Rascal Flatts.

I wish Danny and all the Idols success in their solo careers.

Thanks for the recap, GaGaGlambert! I am looking forward to hearing what Danny releases as his first single. He won me over during the tour, and I definitely felt he was deserving of his top 3 spot.

  • brandy749

Nice to see the show posted at mjs. We are big fans here MSMC.

Most of my floor went to see Danny as a group. Some of us were newbies to the phenomena that is AI, others of us were super die hard fans.

Danny and his band kicked it big time. He was smoking hot! The videos don’t do him justice. His voice is so powerful in a masculine sort of way.
That stage will never be the same again.

Go see him if you can. This guy is going to be big. It will be interesting to see what he does on his album. I think he is going to be a big success.

  • monte

    Danny’s latest tweet:

In the studio with my producer(Mark Bright) working on the album!!!! Very exciting. Get ready!!!

    http://twitter.com/Dannygokey

  • steph6449

That’s terrific to see the confirmation it is Mark Bright working with Danny in producing his first album. Danny really wanted that, and reports during the summer indicated that Mark was very interested to work with Danny as well. Glad this collaboration came to fruition, look forward to seeing what they come up with for Danny’s single and the rest of his album.

  • man5ell

I attended this NY solo show after traveling from Texas and it was worth every minute of my time and money to do it! Danny not only sang his heart out, he had the undivided attention of the audience, and had them on their feet, from the time it started until the end of the show. I cannot wait for this CD he is working on to be on sale…I have plans to buy several for myself, family and friends!
