Danny Gokey in Concert at The Boathouse

Danny Gokey was in Myrtle Beach SC Friday night performing at The Boathouse. This show marked Danny’s first public solo concert for nearly two months; since mid-February, Danny has been mostly behind the scenes working on his new music, growing Sophia’s Heart, and doing a few private events.

Danny’s schedule is starting to fill up though, with a diverse range of upcoming events that include concerts, fundraiser performances, Danny’s 9th show at the Grand Ole Opry, and appearances in both a television movie and live theater show. Upcoming appearances:

  • Chuck and Gena Norris’s annual KICKSTART KIDS gala, Houston TX, 4/15
  • Truth Be Told television movie, 4/16, airing on Fox (UPDATE: check Danny in the preview below!)
  • Grand Ole Opry, 4/23
  • PowerHouse Pub Cinco de Mayo Fiesta concert, Folsom CA, 5/5
  • Chinook Winds Casino Resort, Lincoln City OR, 5/6, 5/7
  • Stories from the Shack, Seattle WA, 5/8. This is a brand-new stage production with Danny as featured music artist.

And listen to Danny at the end of the PYT video talking about the recently announced second annual concert cruise for Sophia’s Heart.

Gotta ask yourself: How is it Gokey is getting more work than Blake and Elliott? Hmmm?

It just occurred to me that the guy singers are allowed to wear sneakers on stage and the women? 4″ heels….wow, who has more stamina? :)

  • JosieX

Well Marie, all three men are talented and deserve to be heard. But this thread is about Danny and I want to talk about him.

Thanks for this thread Steph, and thanks for the video, aek! Danny sounds great and as always I think he is so cute. I cannot wait to see him in Oregon next month, and in the meantime I’m looking forward so much to seeing him in his movie debut in just a few days! That is going to be so cool to see.

  • lucysfave

How is it Danny Gokey is getting more work?

Because his fans are thrilled to support him, love his voice, his passion for helping others, how he connects with his fans* and he puts on a dynamite concert!

He has also be working constantly since stepping off the AI Live stage in September 2009. We Danny fans are very spoiled. Now we are waiting for the news on a new single. Will it be revealed when he performs on the Great Ole Opry stage (for his 9th time) on April 23rd?

    * How many other Idol’s fans don’t wish they could be on a cruise with their favorite?

  • lucysfave

And Steph, thanks for putting up a Danny thread for all to enjoy!

  • certain1

Well I’m going to answer the question…IMO maybe he’s more popular and a better concert act. Oh and that thing about a major label contract.

    But I digress,

So Danny sounds good, looks good (although still think a haircut is in order), now all we need is the new music which fingers crossed should be soon.

  • JosieX

    * How many other Idol’s fans don’t wish they could be on a cruise with their favorite?

Now there’s a happy memory! :) I remember Danny saying that he was going to get other acts lined up to go with him next time, and it sounds like he is working on that. I really don’t care who it is, I will go just to see him, but it will be fun to find out once it’s revealed. And I do think the cross-pollination of fan bases is a great thing.

  • steph6449

Gotta ask yourself: How is it Gokey is getting more work than Blake and Elliott? Hmmm?

Sure, I’ll bite, lol. Didn’t watch the show when Elliott was on, but he’s not signed to a major label, is he? Not really that sure of Blake’s status either, but he seemed like more of a specific taste to me.

Danny can sing like crazy, is ambitious, is reasonably good-looking, is very good with crowds, has a major label and smart management company working with him, sings mainstream music, and has plenty of fans. He also is fresher off AI than Blake or Elliott, and has had at least a little face time on both AI9 and AI10, with possibility perhaps of a performance this season in addition to being featured in the Milwaukee audition show.

It just occurred to me that the guy singers are allowed to wear sneakers on stage and the women? 4? heels….wow, who has more stamina?

I have no explanation about the 4″ heels. I can barely manage 3″ myself, and then only on occasion. I saw some pics of Sara Evans at the ACM Fremont concert with the extremely high heels, always makes me afraid the performers will break their necks

  • certain1

I saw some pics of Sara Evans at the ACM Fremont concert with the extremely high heels, always makes me afraid the performers will break their necks

I don’t know, those flip-flops are the tricky ones.

So hopefully Danny will unveil the new single at the GOO next week, although I won’t get my hopes as Kellie P didn’t do hers. A girl can hope though, right?

  • Indigobunting

That appearance at the Chuck Norris benefit has me

Danny is a huge Chuck Norris joke fan. He has entertained Twitter followers quite a bit with his Chuck Norris jokes and wound up in Country top tweets with some.

Danny sounds great! I was hoping he had some new music to hear, although good for him still getting headlining gigs at this stage when he is between albums and out of sight, for the most part.

Thanks for the thread Steph and Amy for the videos :) Looks like there was a nice crowd for that type of venue.

  • steph6449

I hope we will hear the new single on the Opry, but I’m not holding my breath. May be that it won’t be out until May :?

Don’t appear to have been any hints coming out of Friday’s concert. Not even a new Fozzy sighting, lol!

  • Lucy1234

Thanks Steph for the awesome videos. It is true that Danny has been working extremely hard since he left AI and has had tons of live performances, which in my opinion is his strong suit. Am looking forward to his appearance in the movie and appearance at the Opry. Hopefully, we will hear something soon about a new single.

  • RightNow

Well, I like Elliott Yamin who btw, has always been a huge fan of Danny’s. But I also think Danny and his team have very good about building and positioning him for a long term career. And it does help that Danny was born with the marketing gene (which his critics always slam him for) but you know, that is also part of the package.

In light of all the controversy about winning AI and all the over the top expectations that comes with it, Danny is a great example that someone who finished in 3rd place and who did get the high profile promotions of those in the Top 2, can still score a major record deal and get to do what he loves. And he obviously has done well enough to get him to a second album.

  • Indigobunting

Danny is a great example that someone who finished in 3rd place and who did get the high profile promotions of those in the Top 2

I know you meant did not get the high profile promotions. No GMA, Ellen, Letterman talk shows-only his AI appearance.

Comparing him to Elliot is ironic since Elliot did say Danny was his fave S8 (didn’t he say post AI that he should have won-I thought so but can’t pull up the quote). I love Elliot too.

Different artists have different strengths- Elliot sold way more than Danny (back at the height of AI, at any rate). But Danny’s strength is definitely his live shows- it is funny to read some shocked Twitter posts after concerts sometimes of people who haven’t followed him post AI. He was a completely green, naive artist on AI-really just a truckdriver who directed his church choir. But no doubt, he has worked hard.

I’m sure he won’t get the record breaking debut with album #2- most AI alums fade. And I know Sony RCA Nash is cheap in the
promo dept. I really hope he can get one of those spots on AI still open.

  • happyhexer

Gotta ask yourself: How is it Gokey is getting more work than Blake and Elliott? Hmmm?

I discovered Danny accidentally, and never saw his season of Idol. I never watched AI before Season 9. So I have no idea who Blake is, and cannot comment about him. I have seen some YouTube videos of Elliot, and I like him. I think he has a good voice, and I wish him well. I can speculate (and it is only speculation) that the genre Elliott has chosen isn’t producing much of the type of thing he is doing (which is sad). I think Danny could sound good doing something similar, too, but there just doesn’t seem to be a market for it right now. I hope that changes soon. Elliott is very talented.

    But back to Danny!

  • Indigobunting

Steph, I didn’t know if you wanted to also include this private appearance he just did yesterday in North Carolina. Bringing over from headlines thread:

Found out Danny’s private gig in Mebane NC was for a company GKN: From their website http://www.gkndriveline.com/drivelinecms/opencms/en

GKN Driveline has 18,000 people in more than 40 facilities in over 20 countries working in partnership with vehicle manufacturers to develop driveshaft and geared component technologies for the future.

Thanks for listing Danny’s upcoming appearances, Steph. But shouldn’t they also be listed under the “Idol Appearances” thread? I don’t remember seeing Danny’s back-to-back concerts at Chinook Winds Casino listed there.

Off to Lincoln City, Oregon to pick up our tickets for a group of us who are going to Danny’s upcoming concerts at Chinook Winds Casino on Friday and Saturday, May 6th and 7th!

Can’t wait to hear and see Danny again. He’s magic!

How is it Gokey is getting more work than Blake and Elliott?

Blake and Elliott are awesome :) Thank you for reminding Danny fans how fortunate we are that he has had a successful start to his career since coming off AI two years ago too. Talent doesn’t always get rewarded as it should, but so far Danny has been one of the lucky ones. In this uncertain economic time many great artists are struggling and those of us that follow Danny are so happy for the opportunities he has had to showcase that talent.

It just occurred to me that the guy singers are allowed to wear sneakers on stage and the women? 4? heels….wow, who has more stamina?

Not sure how this relates to Danny’s show since he doesn’t wear sneakers or heels, but I will say those that are able to perform in 4″ heels deserve to win an award! Hey, what’s one more category on all those award shows right :)

I think that one thing that sets the more successful Idols apart is their ability to tour and have concerts successfully in that people will actually come to their shows. Someone was commenting on another site today that @davidarchie has done almost 200 concert dates since leaving Idol (not counting his Asia tour or his book tour) and he is gearing up to tour again. That is what Danny seems to be doing. You can try to go on tour but people have to actually come to your concerts. You don’t have to be a superstar to earn a good living in the music business but it helps if people want to hear you live.

  • desy

Wow, I missed seeing a Danny thread here! Thanks for the video aek, and Steph for putting it all together
Danny sounded great as always. I particularly love his performance of ‘It’s Only’, that is just so beautiful!!!

  • car3278sweet

I liked Danny when he was on the show, but didn’t follow him after. Never followed any contestant after the show. But now I’m a big CJames fan and have been more curious about Danny since CJ is kinda following in his footsteps a bit. So… if Danny’s fans wouldn’t mind clueing me in:

    1) steph6449 How do you get to do these postings for Danny? I mean, did you ask MJ if you could? How does that work? It appears to my newbie eyes that some fan has to step up and promote their idol on MJ’s blog or they kind of get lost in the mass of idols. Is this correct? Not a knock on MJ or windmills or anyone else, they do amazing work. Just an observation.

    2) I listened to all the vids this time around because I truly have not followed Danny’s work. He’s a FANTASTIC singer and certainly a showman. His singing was always good on the show, but he’s clearly really really improved as a showman. Congrats Danny! :-)

My question is… what’s his reception been on country radio? Was it a hard slog ’cause of the AI connnection? Did he run into resistance? I ask this, because as a country fan, his music – at least from the vids above – is not “country country”. Kind of a hybrid. I think Casey James’ music is also not “country country” so I’m interested in what Danny’s experience with radio has been.

    3) as far as touring last summer… I know Danny did Sugarland.. did he do a month and do another stretch with them? Did he tour with another band? Just honestly can’t remember.

    4) Does Danny always have a band when he does his shows? I’ve noticed that Lee and Crystal have both done mostly acoustic other than the big Leno, etc bashes.

thanks for any info. Go Danny and his fans!

I agree with this cmom. I haven’t followed David A.’s career enough to comment on it, but there is no doubt that Danny has built a very loyal and dedicated fan base that continues to grow as more people see him live. Danny is a fantastic live performer that wins over the audience with his voice as well as his charisma on stage.

So… if Danny’s fans wouldn’t mind clueing me in:

Hi fellow CJ fan (well, my first love is Danny, but I am a CJ fan too :) )

Will answer questions in more detail later, as Steph will too I’m sure… all Danny fans busy with a special project right now, but will be “off duty” after 10pm CT!

  • asics85

    car3278sweet,
Thanks for your nice comments about Danny! I had noticed that Casey was following Danny on twitter and wondered if they had met or if Casey was just an admirer of Danny and his music :)

  • certain1

    Cars

I will take some of the questions that were not directed to someone specific ..

Danny did 20 or 25 dates with Sugarland and then did some opening slotes for Tim, Keith, and Lady A along with some solo concerts vaarying in size.

As for radio, Danny himself stated that he did run into some resistance but both of his singles went top 40 and MBD peaked at 23. He has had pretty good callout scores and his concert reception has been great.

  • lucysfave

Does Danny always have a band when he does his shows? I’ve noticed that Lee and Crystal have both done mostly acoustic other than the big Leno, etc bashes.

I’ve been to a lot of Danny concerts, and he almost always has a full band. The exceptions have been some charity events–like last weekend for the military event and almost all of his radio tour. Radio stations don’t usually want a full band unless its at a different venue. In my city, he had his keyboardist/back up singer–Brandon, his bass player–Ivan and a lead guitarist–Def. But two months later when he did a show for Chicago radio (99.1 FM?) he had the full band.

Danny’s band seems to be like family–in fact, his bass player is family–his brother-in-law. And Brandon has been with him all along.

  • RightNow

Brandon is Brandon Fraley. I say watch out for this guy. I can see him being a breakout performer. He’s been doing a lot of writing with Danny. BTW, he looks like he could be related to Matt Giraud, Danny’s Idol BFF. And Brandon’s wife, Jamie is a back-up singer for Carrie Underwood. She has traveled and performed with Danny on a semi-regular basis. It’s great to know that Danny’s band will be playing on his album.

  • steph6449

There was interest to have concert threads for the AI alums coming out of AI8. In Danny’s case, I offered to do it when there were people asking. My feeling was doing them for every single concert is overkill, plus it does take some time. So they have been more aperiodic roundups, and usually on weekends when I have free time. Maybe 2-3 times a month when Danny has a lot going on, less when he doesn’t. mj also separately posts some Danny news and concert announcements when she comes across them, or fans send them in.

    2) I listened to all the vids this time around because I truly have not followed Danny’s work. He’s a FANTASTIC singer and certainly a showman. His singing was always good on the show, but he’s clearly really really improved as a showman. Congrats Danny!

Danny has a pretty soulful style that is not a traditional country sound. He’s been pretty well-received those regardless. And there are some precedents for that type of sound, like Wynonna for one, for whom Danny sang at a tribute dinner last year. It’s been interesting seeing some of the country covers he’s been choosing (Travis Tritt, Brooks & Dunn, Tim McGraw, Carrie Underwood) that cover a lot of ground, not always modern country which was what Danny originally was more known for with Rascal Flatts-type material. I agree, to me Casey does not have a very traditional country sound either, more blues-oriented IMO.

Danny has done respectably and better than many new artists on radio but he’s not had any huge breakout hits so far. He was in the top few for new artist album sales last year making several end-of-year BBD country charts. It’s hard to gauge the singles for me, as the first two singles were very different. My Best Days are Ahead of Me went to #22 on the mediabase chart as his debut single. I Will Not Say Goodbye had huge expectations coming out of the gate and got to #32; though generally regarded as the ‘better’ song, it turned out to be fairly polarizing as far as the lyric content and the raw emotional level of the song. Some radio stations did not want to play it, and there were a couple of blog items saying that radio perceived it to be “too sad.” A few new country artists have had big radio success in the past year, but plenty have failed to crack the top 40, or even top 60. Danny is sitting somewhere in between.

    3) as far as touring last summer… I know Danny did Sugarland.. did he do a month and do another stretch with them? Did he tour with another band? Just honestly can’t remember.

Danny did 20-21 dates with Sugarland, starting in early May and running on and off into early August. That was the most dates any Sugarland opener did last year. He did not tour on an extended basis with any other bands, but did a lot of solo concert appearances in venues anywhere from several thousand people at fairs/festivals/clubs, to 500-750 theater type locations, and in between. He also opened at various shows for numerous other artists, including Lady Antebellum, Tim McGraw, Keith Urban, Jason Aldean, Blake Shelton, Sara Evans, and more.

This year, Danny’s full touring plans aren’t yet known, but the ones we do know about include the Taylor Swift tour, one date opening for Sara, and a variety of Danny solo shows.

    4) Does Danny always have a band when he does his shows? I’ve noticed that Lee and Crystal have both done mostly acoustic other than the big Leno, etc bashes.

Danny had three musicians on his radio tour, very rarely has been seen with less than that. In its largest configuration he has a six person backing band. Brandon Fraley – background vocals, keyboard, music director; Ivan Santiago – bass; Mike Childers – drums; Matt Reviere – lead guitar; Justin Ward – steel guitar / utility player; and, she’s when not touring with Carrie, often also Jamie Fraley, on background vocals. Most of Danny’s solo shows are full-out band shows, not acoustic although he does some acoustic/semi-acoustic shows at radio stations, charity events, or other special formats.

Danny toured a huge amount last year, and has made live touring a significant focus IMO, working really hard to get a substantial live show (15-18 songs, normally) together that he can headline with a strong band behind him. He’s also worked very very hard to improve his stagecraft as a performer from where he started on AI having only really sung previously in church settings. And he works very hard to meet fans, sign for them, and sell merch items after each show. In the FB gallery from Myrtle Beach, you can see Danny posing with fan after fan. He usually has hundreds of people in line for signings after his shows, sometimes more than 1000. My understanding is that Danny has his own incorporated entity for touring and merchandise sales. Although each show is different, I remember one show in WI where I watched the merch guy close up show, and he had a huge wad of cash that would have fit just fine in a mob movie. Lol.

thanks for any info. Go Danny and his fans!

  • lucysfave

Must say personally though, MBDAAOM has grown in its appeal especially as Danny really hits it aggressively in concert and it works very well for him.

My Best Days Area Ahead of Me really gets a great crowd response in concert. And Danny has enhanced it, IMO, since he recorded it.

Maybe this is common in other artists, but the crowd is encouraged to sing along on all his songs–and Danny seems to specialize in finding songs that he can get the crowd to sing the chorus so that he can wrap around it vocally. (It must be a hold over from his days as a choir leader.)

Steph, you are a human encyclopedia when it comes to information on Danny :)

Except his outfits, lol. Someone else has me beat in that department ;)

  • lucysfave

    Except his outfits

I’d wager there are two or three fans that have practically a photographic memory for what and where Danny has worn a plaid shirt, a certain vest, a particular T-shirt….

I don’t know if we have any “experts” on his eyeglass frames–there’s just so darn many of them, LOL. But we may be able to list when he’s gone without glasses….

  • steph6449

Yeah, the eyewear is a challenge. I’ve seen Sophia’s Heart tweeting for help to place where Danny wore some of the pairs that are being auctioned for Sophias Heart and the program in Milwaukee to pay for disadvantaged kids to get eye exams and frames.

The auction items are worth more if they can show Danny actually wearing the specific pair on AI, but I guess there is no master list to look something like that up, lol.

That appearance at the Chuck Norris benefit has me

Danny is a huge Chuck Norris joke fan. He has entertained Twitter followers quite a bit with his Chuck Norris jokes and wound up in Country top tweets with some.

Have to say, I think it will be cute if there are photos of Danny at that event with Chuck Norris after all Danny’s tweeting about the Chuck Norris jokes.

  • kokko

Really like the first video of 14 minutes (4 songs) – it provides a glimpse on how the concert flows and shows Danny’s energetic and engaging personality on stage – of course his vocals are great.

I would be very interested in knowing more about the theatrical production of Stories from the Shack – it’s great that he has a chance to bring his music to a wider audience. I am wondering what songs will Danny sing in this production. Based on the story line I would speculate “Tiny Life” “I Still Believe” and “I Will Not Say Goodbye”, or may be he will do some covers?

  • Indigobunting

    Carsweet:

I think everyone answered pretty well; but I will add that I think radio has been the biggest challenge for Danny- Country radio is quite formulaic and he is not a typical country sound- although he can sing more traditionally (lol, even with a twang, although he was goofing around) he wants to bring a hybrid of lots of soul mixed with country.

That and especially the fact that he is from the upper midwest and has no twang has been more of a challenge. IMO, being from AI hasn’t been a detriment for Danny for the most part- although there is definitely a faction of hard core Country (sites like Twangers-I think its called- for example, lol) lovers who look with disdain upon AI.

Even though CJ has a non traditional country sound also, he has a twang and is from Texas. I think this will help greatly with radio and also, Texas is a huge radio market; I think they will support him :) I think this is why the label seems to be taking the road with him they have- trying to pair him up with lots of writers and coming up with radio-appealing material.

It is difficult to have patience awaiting news of your fave’s schedule, but things will keep rolling out for CJ, I know. I expect his label to get him a CMA Fanfest spot-that will be fun.
And he will get more of his own gigs, which I know he and fans will enjoy more than the short sets they get as openers.

What Danny and Casey both have going for them is name recognition off AI and a ready made fan base to buy their singles and albums.

  • steph6449

from twitter, and sure enough you can see Danny briefly in this preview for the tv movie. he looks good :)

    @dannygokey You’re in this?? Spotted at 1.44 mark http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjIQg3brPos #truthbetold I <3

    .

I added the YT preview as a bonus video to this post
    .

Country radio has some diversity. What is popular on Texas radio is not necessarily the same as mainstream country elsewhere. It will be interesting to see where Casey fits in, I don’t know that it is guaranteed Texas radio will adopt him unreservedly. Danny has stations that play his music a lot, some that have been tougher, and some where it seems to be a question of the song. Certain stations for example declined to play IWNSG, but were willing to take fan requests for MBDAAM. Some stations that did not play MBDAAM, played IWNSG a lot. Hard to figure, and for me makes it less predictable what may happen with Danny’s next single.

In general, I don’t mind that any new artist, including and maybe especially those coming off AI, has to work hard to gain acceptance in all areas of the entertainment world. In the long run, I think that is good for them :)

  • Lucy1234

Lots of good info on Danny in this thread. Any fans who have not followed his career after Idol will learn a lot here. Danny is my favorite Idol ever. I’ve had a few favorites from other seasons but none compare to Danny. I’ve seen Danny in concert quite a few times and he is fantastic live.

kokko, I know of a couple of Danny fans that post here at MJ’s that are planning to attend this production in Seattle in May, so there should be first-hand reports on what Danny’s involvement entails :)

Lucy1234 Danny is also my favorite Idol ever.

Luvy1234 and Indigobunting….Danny is my favorite ever too :)
