This morning Danny Gokey had a reunion with BFF Jamar Rogers at Milwakee’s FOX 6. Check out the video

Later, he headed to the church where he worked as worship leader before Idol, Faithbuilder’s International.

Next, he performed a mini-concert at Summerfest. Then it was on to the Brewers vs Cubs baseball game, where Danny threw out the first pitch before singing the National Anthem.

After the jump, check out a video of Danny singing gospel at Faithbuilders, concert footage from Summerfest, and the National Anthem at the Brewers vs. Cubs game in Milwaukee.

  • mikeyb

Not as bad as I thought it’d be. Dude needs to learn some phrasing, though.

  • lizzy12345

You might also want to mention that he had a mini-concert at Summerfest Stadium with 26,000 fans. I believe that is a larger turnout then either Kris or Adam. Funny how you picked the church video to post on your website and not concert video. I know that all the videos from Danny Day are available. I figured you would be selective on which ones you put up.

  • Grammie Kari

Do you think Jamar will try out for next season’s show?

  • galaxygrrl

It’s so interesting because people say you either love or hate Adam but it seems to be more true of Danny. Everyone I know finds Adam at least amusing and most people I know don’t like Danny, but clearly some do. I think he is just creepy using his wife’s death to get votes.

Alison, Kris and Adam will all sell more albums than Danny in the long run.

  • TwigLA

What a thrill to see Jamar and hear him sing again. I was disappointed he didn’t make it through. I wanted him to do some Gnarls Barkley.

Nice that Danny had a nice hometown visit.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

Sorry about the double post. I couldn’t even edit for some reason. :(

  • http://theinsatiablebrain.wordpress.com/ Lele

lizzy12345, are you serious? MJ is notoriously known for adding ALL the possible AI info regardless of which contestant is about. I may be mistaken, but I never saw MJ’s personal opinion affect the quality and/or availability of info.

I think you may be way off on that.

  • elephant1212

taylor hicks 2.0=the SSB wasnt very good…he better stop talking before he loses his voice becuz they have two songs this week!

I’d love to check out some more Danny videos from today. Since you know all about them, which ones are good, and stuff, why not post the links here so that we can all enjoy them?

I mentioned the Summerfest stadium concert in my post. You might actually want to read my post first before you complain.

Got anything for me to post? Kris and Adam fans have been sending me stuff all day. I actually had to search for videos to post on the blog. Didn’t find one decent video from Summerfest, sorry. And what’s wrong with posting the church video here? He spent the entire morning there. It was a major part of his day in Milwaukee.

  • laura11383

Lizzy, I’m a Danny fan, but that was kinda mean. Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth (not calling you a horse, MJ ;) ).

  • JosieX

I like all three of the guys, although Adam is my favorite. For Danny singing the national anthem, I think the video on the Fox News website has better sound quality than the one above, and this site also has footage from the concert.

I wouldn’t. I’m still hearing that he has some sort of record deal in the works, so….

  • galaxygrrl

lizzy12345 did you send MJ videos? I sent the Adam eyeliner one to her because i thought it was so funny, I am not even an huge Adam fan (still bummed about Allison). But it was up in about 30 min.

If there are videos you want to see, send them to her, I’m sure she will post them.

By the way, it’s not MJ who is bias, only the judges and that is in favor of Danny. ;-)

Just send her some videos, she will post them I’m sure.

  • lakhesis

Listening on headphones. Pretty good until the end where the crowd cheered – omg hurt my ear drums lol. Didn’t expect the volume.

  • luvnlife

This is the most unbiased website I’ve found re: American Idol. Methinks it’s sour grapes. Danny is not my cup of tea, but I’m more than willing to leave my options open and watch and listen to see if anything he could sing would change my mind. These videos have shown me nothing I didn’t already know. He’s reached his peak of fame and I’m all for letting him and his fans enjoy it. I found listening excrutiating to my ears and sensibilities. When I actually looked at the videos all I could think was, won’t someone please buy the guy a decent shirt and pants and maybe a good shave and haircut.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

lizzy, you forgot to mention that may of those peeps were probably there to get free Summerfest tix. Just keeping it real. ;-) I bet he would have had a pretty big crowd anyway, but they pretty much bribed half of them, I think. I still wanna know who paid for it. ;-)

  • lizzy12345

    Mj,

I really like your blog. I just found it this year and have been a fan of AI since season 1. It is a place I can come and read everything idol since I am such a fanatic. Love all the historical information and updates on what all the Idols are doing with their careers. My favorite this year is Danny and there is just so much hate for him here. I have been reading the blogs but afraid to post because I am a Danny fan. I am sure there are many more lurkers just like me. Danny seems like such a nice guy and so undeserving of this kind of treatment. I watched all the videos of his day in Milwaukee and he seemed so relaxed and happy. He sang lots of songs for his fans (Heard it Through the Grapevine, What Hurts the Most, September and PYT). Guess I just got a little defensive. I suspect I will go back to lurking as it is not the friendliest atmosphere for a Danny fan here.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

Aww, Lizzy. If you like the blog, stick with it. I was probably one of 2-3 Ace fans in season 5 in a sea of Taylor Hicks fans. Keep posting why you like Danny. You just have to realize that some don’t. It’s not personal.

Don’t worry, Lizzy – there are other Danny fans here. You just have to have thick skin.

  • TwigLA

I liked the band performing with Danny at Summerfest. Why did he choose to sing songs he doesn’t know the words to though? Seemed very odd to me.

My blog is not a fansite. If the negative commentary bothers you, it might be best if you don’t read it. I also don’t allow off-topic bitching and complaining in these threads. So, let’s get back to topic. NOW.

  • aek

I know there are lots of Danny fans in my parts, they just don’t seem to be here on this site. I actually like all three guys, but I post mostly about Danny because I feel like someone needs to throw in a good word for him now and then.

As far as getting the free tickets, I’m sure it helped to build the crowd, but there’s no doubt that Danny has lots of fans…he was the only one never in the bottom, and heck, he may still not have been in the bottom.

I live in SC, and my Mom just got on facebook. I was looking through the different people in my home town (a couple of weeks ago), and my sister (who is a big Adam fan, although she says she thinks Danny has a great voice), noticed that just about EVERY SINGLE person that we clicked on had a little mention under “FAN Of” that said “Danny Gokey.” We were laughing so hard, because it was bizarre how they all had him as their favorite. Most of these people are probably more casual fans that don’t come online and obsess about AI. Although there’s nothing wrong with that….noone was more obsessed than I was in Season 5. :lol_wp:

  • cookcricket

Hmmm, I wonder how Danny felt going back to this church after spending so much time in the idol bubble. I can’t help but think he’s a changed man in some ways, just like anyone who’s had this experience would be imo.

I’m not by any means saying it’s a bad experience for him, in fact it’s probably nice for him to be back among those he loves. However, I’m sure it’s just different.

I wish him all the best.

Whoever decided that if you went to the Danny concert you got into the Summerfest concert free, is a marketing genius. That and having him at the Brewers game. Awesome publicity. Guaranteed huge crowds. (Not that I don’t think there were tons of fans there for Danny, of course there were.)

    But seriously, brilliant.

Danny sort of had a moment when he saw his first crowd at the TV station.

I love the homecomings. It’s like a little boost before the last one (or two) Idol Hell week(s).

Yes, I think he has a ton of fans, but he’s been propped up unlike Kris and Adam in their towns. People outside the area don’t seem to realize what a big deal Summerfest is. It’s not your local street fest. LOL.

I love the homecomings, too. Today I have really enjoyed the videos of all three remaining Idols. Warm fuzzies all around!

LOL Exactly. Huge rivalry = huge crowds. Whether Danny was there or not.

And a large portion of the Summerfest concert had probably already planned on going, before they even knew Danny was going to be there.

  • jpfan

I thought Danny was way overpimped the entire season. And he hasn’t been that great lately but I am enjoying the videos. He’s a pretty decent singer after all. Really liking PYT and September. Of course, I’m partial to this kind of music. Maybe he could move some units after all.

Why is so hard to believe he has fans? He’s the only one of the three to never hit the seal. Someone’s throwing him the votes. Maybe the same people who showed up for the concert.

  • JulieR

This is the Fox video of his intro and opening number (PYT) today. Great crowd, great vibe…

    http://tinyurl.com/p2de28

  • carolinacharms

Wow. Way better in his element. Now I kinda see why Paula chose the TTD song. Kinda. But anyway, if he really took it to church on Idol (a la Mandisa), Simon would call him “self-indulgent.”

  • galaxygrrl

Well, I’m afraid, I’m one of the people that think that Danny has just been over pimped the whole season and that he was so bad on Tuesday night, he should have gone home. My issue really is not with Danny. He is a good singer, I don’t think anyone will disagree with that, but the judges have just been horrible. I just think that they think they can get the largest viewership with a Danny Adam finale since they appeal to different demographics. And it’s so bad that it creates Danny hate with some of us.

Anyway, the new Idoltry is up and it’s about Danny and really funny — maybe not if you are a Danny fan, but for everyone else…. :-)

  • http://www.myspace.com/chachithegreat chachi

Man. I have been trying to be nice all day and not say anything, because I have just been in a bitchy mood lately because of no sleep and finals (*shakes fist at American Idol*), but Danny’s Summerfest videos are making me LOL and I cannot contain it anymore.

Don’t get me wrong and at risk of getting slapped by Kristin Baldwin across the internet, there are times when I think Danny has a good voice when he’s not shouting, and I don’t necessarily think he’s a bad person. He’s just one of the least self aware people I have ever seen and that entertains me to no end.

Watching these videos, I feel like I’m at Navy Pier watching a cheesy band that’s just there for people to sing along to when they’re drunk. They don’t have to be good, they just have to be singing something familiar.
Except they usually have better taste in music than Danny.

    Ok, I feel better now.

  • galaxygrrl

Nah, I think in a moment of honestly, Kristin Baldwin might actually admit that Danny has a good voice and would not slap you.

It’s the list of other things pimping by the judges, lack of self awareness, no real artistry, etc that gets her going.

Just know, if Danny was not so clueless,we would never have the scream which was rather amusing too. Thank goodness for the humor of Idolatry.

  • NOLA

The homecomings are my fav part of Idol. Great crowd. WTG, Danny!

  • milly93

Danny has a good voice, and I actually sort of like PYT and his performance from Rat Pack Week. But I would like him a lot more if he weren’t so cheesy. I think that he deserved 4th place…

  • http://youtube.com/user/ConcertCameraCat Sparkles

I was at the Summerfest concert. There was no way to make it to the Brewers game in time afterwards. Anyway, there were almost 26,000 people there, mainly families with kids from what I observed. Just about every one I spoke to mentioned that they also liked Adam. And quite a few mentioned that they couldn’t believe Kris was still there and not Allison, whatever that means. Also, no one mentioned the free Summerfest ticket they were giving away as the reason they were there. It wouldn’t have been worth it to walk all that way from the parking lots & stand in line that whole time for it. I’m actually selling my free ticket as I’ll be seeing Bob Dylan/Willie Nelson at Summerfest & admission is included with that ticket. Kind of blows my mind though that we spent more on the Idol concert tickets than on the ones to see those 2 legends.

  • JosieX

I just made a comment on Adam’s thread and wanted to say here also that I was touched by Danny’s reaction to the crowd in one of the first videos I saw. He was trying to reach out to as many people as he could and he said something like “I just feel bad that I can’t get to everyone”, and you could tell that he really did wish that he could have a moment with everyone who came. Danny doesn’t have the easy charm that Adam displays so effortlessly, but I like him and I think he is a good person. I hope that today was very restorative for him, and all the guys, to feel so much love from people. I would think that it would be!

  • stelladallas

I think this is pretty darned good for a homecoming. I never expected a mini concert from any of the idols today; maybe just a song or two. The videos from all the idols have been entertaining. This may be the first season I have liked all of the final three contestants.

  • canuck

Thanks for posting these videos. I have been waiting quite awhile. Yea, I appreciate Danny’s singing and even like his flaws cause he’s a real person up there on the Idol stage.

  • TKat

I am an Adam fan but this is not an Adam-Danny contest. Don’t forget about Kris.

Danny had 26,000 fans at SummerFest and that’s impressive.

BUT Kris had the biggest concert crowds — at his 3 concerts, the biggest crowd at AT&T and the biggest parade crowds. Kris also had the Governor, two big city mayors, Chris Allen Days in AR, Little Rock, Conway and Jacksonville, FL

He has grassroots support that appears to be growing everyday. Even his online buzz has been accelerating, almost as quickly as Adam’s. I still think that Adam will win but, if Kris continues to perform the way he has been, he’ll take #2 — and might even win!

  • http://youtube.com/user/ConcertCameraCat Sparkles

Forgot to mention…some Green Bay Packers were there too, not too surprising. But it was a bit surprising when Rick Springfield showed up. But he was playing in town & his wife is from Beloit, WI, so I guess not so surprising after all.

  • shell29

Why is so hard to believe he has fans?

Yeah, I don’t understand that either.

Danny sounded good on the NA, and I liked the clip of him singing with his church. I could see myself possibly picking up a Danny Gokey gospel album if he were to release one in the future.

  • idolstyleblessed

The truth is they took Danny to places that already had big crowds and “manufactured” some of the excitement for him.
He went to his church….a large mega-church where about several thoudsand fellow members turned out to support a member of their church family.
He went to Summerfest. They gave everyone who attended the mini-concert free tickets to the actual Summerfest events.
He went to a Brewers Game. Those people were there to see the game, not Danny.
Kris actually had the biggest outpouring. He had multiple events with 15,000 in attendance at several of them and he was the main event…the only reason for being there. This isn’t surprising because he comes from a small state that really supports its own. Having a finalist in the Top 3 on AI is huge for Arkansas and they really showed him the love today. His attendace was unreal and his day was packed with the most events. It was all about Kris.
Adam had the smallest events but he’s from Southern California where they’re very used to “celebrity” and it doesn’t mean alot to them. He also hasn’t lived in San Diego for nearly 10 years so he didn’t have the ties to the community that Kris and Danny did….going home to places they actualy still live. Taking those things into account, it was a good showing for Adam. His smaller-scale events actually came off as more “personal”…he went into classrooms and talked to small groups of drama/chorus students, had a pep rally at his high school, a private “intimate” performance at an arts center, walked along the beach talking to people and then headed to a military base to sing and visit with troops and their families.
It will be interesting to see what the videos look like because the celebrations were all very different.

  • canuck

Anyone know what Danny has done to support himself up until now. I’ve read that he is a volunteer music director at Faith Builders.

There’s not much info on Wikipedia compared to Adam who is trained musically(not trying to make a point here really) and Kris who is a university student.

  • http://youtube.com/user/ConcertCameraCat Sparkles

He went to Summerfest. They gave everyone who attended the mini-concert free tickets to the actual Summerfest events.

Actually, he was at the Harley stage on the Summerfest grounds. Summerfest is held in summer (10 days always including July 4th). Danny wasn’t there during the actual Summerfest as that is later this summer. This was a special event & everyone was there to see Danny or be part of the American Idol experience or both (like me as I admit that I also love this cheesy show. Actually, I love cheese in general, not that that’s pertinant to this conversation). Anyway, there were long lines & you had to walk a long way & then stand for hours (unless you were one of the few first thousand or so who got to sit on benches). And yes, after the concert you could get a free ticket for Summerfest to be used later this summer. There are lots of easier ways to get a free ticket though so I really don’t think that’s why most people were there. But no, I didn’t take a poll or anything.
Also, Danny made a lot of other stops all day. He even saw the Bronz Fonz. I live here & I haven’t even seen that. Not that I really want to (it’s kind of creepy looking).

Nice SSB. I expect the Idol soul singers to add their own flavor to it and he did an alright job.

  • Heart

I really liked Danny’s Mini Concert, especially the medleys! It seems like it was so much fun!

I wish Adam could’ve done something like that! Adam’s visit was more intimate, I guess.

Thanks for posting all 3 Hometown visits, mj!

  • These Eyes

I think all three of them had nice hometown visits and they all seemed very happy about them. Regarding hometown crowds, I seem to remember in Season 6 Blake had mobs and mobs of people attend his events in WA, while Jordin had a much smaller turnout in AZ. I don’t think the crowd size makes that much difference when the entire country is voting. YMMV.

I’m just thrilled that they all had a fun day with their fans.

  • BlankSlate

    Can we talk?
I think Danny Gokey has zero stagecraft, zero stage personality, and zero star quality. He moves and claps his hands as if he was leading his church group.
His Star Spangled Banner makes his Dream On sound like a classic. He did not know the words to the songs in that Summerfest medley. (Free tickets given out to attendees if you managed to survive the Gokey Experience.)

Sorry. He’s not AI-worthy. Took up a lot of camera time with no legitimate rationale for his presence.

  • luvnlife

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m sorry, I think Kris and Danny are only good as opening acts and will be one shot cd wonders. Adam is the lead act. Always has been and heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s great and exciting to look at, whether glam rock or suit & tie. Kris and Danny are pretty much boring and donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have enough variety or energy to keep me interested in listening to their music and watching them is just..well, boring. Not saying they arenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t nice guys. All three of them are, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s obvious. Unfortunately, the only one with any real talent, marketable talent is Adam. Kris is getting the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“tweenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ vote because he is just cute. Danny is getting the leftovers, the ones that find Kris too bland and Adam too over the top.

  • monleo1705

I’m sure the fans enjoyed the mini concert and Danny, too.
But shouldn’t he be thinking about saving his voice?
Maybe Adam intentionally did less singing in order not to take any chances?

  • elw

He is a good gospel singer but he’s out of his league on AI (as was proven by ‘the scream’). I wish he’d stop playing the ‘religious’ ‘poor widower’ card, it’s getting old.

  • Chipmunk

Looks like he had a great homecoming..Good for you Danny!!

I am glad Danny had a great day. (I’m glad they all had great days actually.) I don’t care how many people try to poo-poo it, Danny had large crowds, and good for him.

Donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get me wrong and at risk of getting slapped by Kristin Baldwin across the internet, there are times when I think Danny has a good voice when heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not shouting, and I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t necessarily think heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a bad person. Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just one of the least self aware people I have ever seen . . .

    ITA!

  • bean99

I don’t love the hometown visits but it was nice to see Danny so happy and relaxed. I’m a bit worried about his voice but he sounded really good doing the NA and his mini-concert. Obviously he has a ton of fans and glad that you set the record straight about why people were there, Sparkles.

In one of the videos they poked Simon in the eye, lol. The little cheerleaders jumping up and down were cute too.

  • Lera

If it comes down to a Danny vs Adam I’ll vote for Danny big time…if it comes down to Kris and Danny…it’s Kris big time. Adam isn’t my cup of tea in music. I would never buy a CD from him ever and as a matter of fact if he was on the radio I would turn it off.

  • Chrissy

Good for Danny-all of these guys deserved a good homecoming, and it seems like they got it. :)

I think this week is going to be very interesting, and I think it’s definitely a competition!

That being said, I’m so glad there are different styles for everyone. I hope I get the chance to hear Adam on the radio some day…along with Allison. *sniff*

  • downeast

What is WITH the washed out plaid shirts and the icky jeans? Is this some new style I’m just not aware of? Is grunge back?

Seriously. All those people turn out in your honor and you dress like you’re going to wash your car?

  • Norwegiano

Look, I understand Danny’s appeal. He is the “Everyman” of the competition.

He comes from humble and straight-laced roots, born into an atypical large mid-western family (a la The Osmonds, but instead of the Mormon influence, it is the born-again Christian thing), and he has that glasses trademark, similar to Elvis Costello and Buddy Holly.

My biggest concern with Danny is that he sounds very similar to Michael McDonald and Michael Bolton, with the raspy quality and white guy soul vibe. However, neither of these artists have had much airplay or press over the past decade. They are solid musicians and powerful singers, but not exactly top of the charts. They are best suited for Casinos, Branson stages, and classy Vegas lounge acts. This will be tough for Danny when he is trying to put his album together after the show/tour. How do you get the raspy white guy soul sound without being rightfully compared to B list musicians like McDonald and Bolton?

    Kris

has the same issue, since there are already several acts out there who do what he does (and better, I might add). Mraz and Jack Johnson have already cornered the “angst-ridden-cooler-than-cool acoustic guitar-playing sensitive post-metrosexual musician” market. What new spin can he put on that? Not sure it is possible.

Adamà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ he is a horse of a different color.

Kara was right that he should be doing the 70′s classic and 80′s glam rock, mixed with modern goth-rock like Nine Inch Nails.

A couple of artists out there have been trying to do it, like critic and fan darlings such as The Flaming Lips, Radiohead, Porcupine Tree, The Secret Machines, Elbow, Doves…etc. I love all these bands big time, but they haven’t caught on with mainstream radio-friendly America. They set trends, but are rarely lauded for it.

But what Adam has that they don’t is the vocal chops to take this alternative style into the mainstream without compromising his cred.

  • thedingoateyobaby

Well, Danny’s STAR SPANGLED BANNER wasnt bad, wasnt great but wasnt as bad as I would have liked it to be.

He’s such a dork though, he’s so…….ewwwwwww. Why was he dressed like a homeless person? (apologies to homeless people everywhere).

  • Miss Chaos

Too skered to look at Danny’s videos. But I did laugh at the one about the glasses. I do hate that the season seems to be coming down to, religion, nationality, and sexual preference. I dont remember this much in other seasons. Why the eff can’t it be just about the singing, especially when TCO had such a mess of his song, thus showing us that he.cant.sing.

  • TKat

Here is an interesting video of Danny singing “O Holy Night” in 2006 from the local Fox station. It is really very similar to how he sounds now. His vocal style is not to my taste, but if you’re a Danny fan …

My biggest concern with Danny is that he sounds very similar to Michael McDonald and Michael Bolton, with the raspy quality and white guy soul vibe.

He reminds me much more of Huey Lewis and can see him doing those types of songs, eg. PYT. I don’t know if that would be popular now but am not sure if what Adam sings will be either. I can like a person’s voice without worrying about what will happen after idol and there’s at least a possibility I’d buy Danny’s cd but never Adam’s.

  • http://absinthedreamers.blogspot.com/ Starrlight

Um, I would respectfully submit that NIN and Manson for that matter are NOT goth rock, but industrial. That is all.

BUT Kris had the biggest concert crowds à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ at his 3 concerts, the biggest crowd at AT&T and the biggest parade crowds. Kris also had the Governor, two big city mayors, Chris Allen Days in AR, Little Rock, Conway and Jacksonville, FL

That doesn’t mean anything. Thats like saying Adam is the most popular just because he has the largest Internet following………

Each Idol had different homecomings. Some were open to the public, and some were private. Some were in small towns, and some were in states where there are more celebrities walking around than cats.

The point is, it seems like they all had a nice homecoming, and should give them confidence going into next week.

  • sweetie99v

My biggest concern with Danny is that he sounds very similar to Michael McDonald and Michael Bolton, with the raspy quality and white guy soul vibe.

    Thats why I like Danny’s voice… LOL
    Different strokes for different folks!!

Yup. Thats why Adam will be the star coming out of Idol, whether he wins or not.

  • weareallinnocent

Dropping in, flying by, only listened to the SSB and read very few comments on this page. But…

First, I really do worry for him about his voice. I don’t think he’s singing in a technically sound manner to begin with, and I think he’s reaching at the top of his register beyond where he should be going. But, hey, his choice. Still, he should take better care.

Second, even with all that troubles (and irks) me about Danny, watching him sing the SSB, wow, did I empathize. Such a difficult song to begin with. And, even as arrogant as he seems to be typically, I felt like I could see literal fear in his eyes. Coming off of Scream On, I totally get it. But, man, even I was anxious for him all the way through until “…freeeeeee…” at which point, his relief was palpable. He was scared to death he wouldn’t get that note!

I thought he did a good job on it though. I just couldn’t enjoy it because I was so anxious for him and could tell that he was too!

  • TwigLA

It will be very interesting to see how the footage is edited for next Wednesday’s show. It can go so many ways.

I was most impressed by the Adam and Kris hometown visits. Adam’s because he IS in So Cal and I know how blase we are about these things. I always tell people who visit me and want to see ‘celebrities’ to go grocery shopping, to church, the library, a hole in the wall diner, an art museum, a ‘non premier’ movie … normal people places. I was glad they did Adam’s in San Diego. (It was fabulous, btw)

I was almost happy that Allison didn’t have to suffer the let down of a hometown visit here when watching those of the others. I went to the Universal Studios stop for Kat McPhee out of sympathy and it was the most embarrassing thing I’ve ever seen. If a media savy insider Dad couldn’t get something going for her, how would a girl from a poor Hispanic American family fare?

I was very impressed by Kris’ because he really IS small town and small state. It shows in their local Fox station. There is no glitz there at all. I was amazed by the crowds he elicited and, as others said, those people were there to see and show their love for Kris and it was evident. I was also very impressed by him and his singing. It was smooth and understated Kris and I loved it.

Danny is also big city and went to places where there are big events. Even I know about Summerfest and if I were in the area would have gone to get that free ticket. (Man, I’d love to go to a Dylan/Willie Nelson concert!) Also, in this economy, families take advantage of any free entertainment. I will say, I was very impressed by the band he had there. Very talented.

  • 2dogs

These videos humanized Danny for me. He is a dork and as someone else put, has a remarkable lack of self-awareness. But I think he is relatively harmless, even nice, and I’m glad he got some love at home. If he has been reading the internet at all (and how can I guy like that resist) it had to be a pretty crummy experience. This had to have perked him up. Since I can’t see myself buying either his or Adam’s CDs, I really don’t care much who wins, so they might as well both have a good experience in these final two weeks.

  • Jx223

I enjoyed the Hometown videos of Danny. I really liked when he sung the KC and The Sunshine Band song and I thought that he did a good job on the national anthem. I am glad that he had a good turnout for his homecoming. I do worry about his voice, I hope that he gets it checked out and that he takes some time to rest it if he can.

  • rockvixen

Gosh what a boring version of SSB. Couldn’t he have stylized the lyrics more to make it interesting? His voice is strained too from all the Scream On. I give him an A for effort only.

  • Gigi3

Anyone know what Danny has done to support himself up until now. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve read that he is a volunteer music director at Faith Builders.

I don’t remember the exact sources, but I recall him saying (maybe in an Itunes confessional) that he’s been a truck driver (the one where they talked about pre-idol days.) Also, I understood that he WAS on the paid staff of his church. I remember reading somewhere that there was an issue for a time when the church balked at providing his medical insurance b/c Sophia’s heart condition made the rates so high.

  • Doogs

odd that MJ chooses to lead with a video of… Jamar Rogers? We have to click on the link to find the Gokey video…. just sayin’

  • Doogs

just listened to all of the vids. He sounds fantastic. Lets hope for some song choices this week. Already not loving Terrence Trent Darby. Could Paula get a little more current?

  • BootStar

I’m actually starting to feel kinda bad for Danny. He may still win this thing (I’ve got all my points on him to do so!), but he is so clearly out of his element. He’s used to being a Very Big And Anointed Fish in a very small pond, but he’s clearly not a trained singer AT ALL. He may have been the music director at his church, but he’s sorely (literally) lacking any serious vocal coaching, and it’s truly sad. It sounds like he’s either going to require surgery or a year of serious re-learning to sing properly and resting his voice. The lack of sleep is bad for any singer, but for somebody who’s so incredibly worn down (and Danny seems punch drunk with exhaustion), I am genuinely afraid for him.

A lot of people thought David Foster was a jackass for having Chris Daughtry lie down on the floor in S5 and sing while reclining, but it was a very basic technique for teaching somebody how to sing from his diaphragm. Danny needs to learn to support his singing better or he’s going to be without a voice in a few years. (Hoping Chris learned that lesson, but his voice sounded pretty shot to me the other night too.)

Danny can learn to dress better and perform and be given good music to sing, but without his instrument, he’ll be finished.

  • judy

Danny is like Katharine McTaTas for me. Good voice, but just something ‘off’ and phony about him – just like Katharine.

  • JudyOhio

I’m an Adam fan, but I thought Danny did a really nice job with the SSB.

You can donate canned goods at the gate to get free admittance to Summerfest (they make most of their money on beer sales and boy do people here love the beer).
I got there about an hour & a half before the doors were to open. I waited in a traffic jam for about 15 minutes, walked about a half mile from the parking lot to the end of the line, stood in line for an hour or so (they opened the gate early) and stood in the hot sun for over an hour before the concert started. Afterwards I waited in line like cattle to get out for about 30 minutes and then had to wait another 20 minutes to get out of the parking lot. And lots of traffic to get to the freeway to get home. They only handed out the free Summerfest pass after the concert was over so you couldn’t just run in and get a free ticket. Why would you go through all that when there are a lot of easier ways to get a free ticket? Sorry, but the free ticket theory is , as Spock would say, highly illogical.
The shots of the crowd show a lot of homemade signs supporting Danny because they either like his singing or because he’s a hometown hero (unfortunately we have too few of those). You don’t see a lot of people looking at their watches to see when they can get their free ticket. Everyone I talked to said they were so proud that Milwaukee would be featured on American Idol (none of my friends could get off of work so I had to go alone & therefore was forced to talk to people so I wouldn’t be lonely boo-hoo). That was a pretty big crowd for something that was announced less than 48 hours before. I personally don’t love any of the contestants this year but I have to admit that it’s very cool that someone from here has made it so far on one of my favorite shows.

I LOVE Danny’s voice. I don’t care if sounds like Michael McDonald (which I also love). I love Danny’s goofy personality, as if he’s leading the choir everytime he sings..I don’t care how he “dresses”. He’s a bit corny at times but I find that endearing. I don’t care what kind of record he puts out after, gospel, contemporary or whateva…He has a fan right here and always. I actually don’t care if he goes out 3rd because he has won already to me. If that is the case then its Kris FTW for me.

I really like what I see in the mini-concert & I think Danny did a very goog job in working the crowd, and the crowd seemed to enjoy it.

I am worry about his voice though, he admitted his vocal cord was sore, I hope he would be okay for the Tuesday performance.

Just don’t understand all the negative comments about this guy. Some are borderline irrational IMO.

Is it a coincidence, or do you think that the AI producers whated to have SSB’s by the final choosen two? Have they ever done this before on the AI home coming? And why didn’t Kris get to do the SSB — I think he might have done the best arrangement.

I agree, Danny did a nice job with the SSB. But, Adam nailed it.

  • lizzy

This year’s AI contestants haven’t made me into an obsessed fan like last year. DC= :wub_tb: Being from WI and watching DG day in Milwaukee has me leaning in his direction. It is the first time someone from this area has made it this far — I also enjoyed his mini concert at the Summerfest Grounds. Plus the hate filled comments toward this young man just strengthens my desire to see him go further. So it’s time to vote my fingers off again this year.

From my understanding, Danny was homeschooled? That’s why he didn’t have a high school visit. I haven’t watched all the vids, so I’m sorry if I am wrong there. I think that is why they had the Summerfest concert, because he didn’t have the high school to go to and perform. Then Danny went to a game and sung the SSB. San Diego is the home of the largest US Navel base on the west coast, so it makes sense that Adam went there and sung the SSB.

I just don’t think there was an event that Kris went to where it was appropriate to sing the SSB.

I think they had it at the Harley stage on the Summerfest grounds because the Mayor wanted to give Harley Davidson, Summerfest and our beautiful lakefront the national exposure. Also, it really was the best place to accomodate the large crowd and show Milwaukee in a positive light. Unlike nearby Chicago, we’re not used to all this attention and it’s pretty exciting.

just listened to all of the vids. He sounds fantastic. Lets hope for some song choices this week. Already not loving Terrence Trent Darby. Could Paula get a little more current?

Actually, I think Paula made a very astute choice — ‘course, that’s because I noticed Danny’s vocal resemblance to TTD at the beginning of the season and recommended that he sing “Wishing Well” in the Disco Week thread here.

My AI5 fave Elliott Yamin is a Danny fan and thinks they both sing soufully and from the heart. I see two additional similarities:

    1. Paula picked the far-from-current Bobby Caldwell’s “What You Won’t Do for Love” for Elliott’s top 3 judges’ choice. That was likewise an astute choice.

    2. However, after his hometown visit and lack of proper vocal training, Elliott’s voice was nearly wrecked. I hope Danny’s isn’t (or Adam’s or Kris’s, for that matter).

I think the top 4 were solid last week and hope that trend continues through the finale. I agree with Brian Mansfield of USA Today in really liking Danny’s interpretation of “Dream On.” I was in high school when Aerosmith released their debut album and have heard the song performed and played more times than I can possibly count. When Michael Johns selected “Dream On” for inspiration week last season, I thought it was a stretch for that theme.

Danny’s version was the first time I really felt the meaning and inspiration behind the lyrics. I even enjoyed his brief scatting and would like to hear more. That final scream is supposed to sound like an anguished wail. Danny acknowledged the song took him out of his comfort zone and I respect that he didn’t hold back.

Ha. I feel the same way about Kris. I like him, but I feel like his voice, in no way, shape, or form, compares to Danny’s.

I think Adam can sing the best. I think much of this comes from his training and experience. But Adam is leaps and bounds above the others.

Yeah, I feel like I’m being mean when I say it about Kris, but it really is obvious. I was just watching back the show where they are all singing School is Out For the Summer. Adam sings, Kris sings, and then Danny sings. Kris’s voice just does not have as much meat in it…if that makes any sense. It really jumps out at you when he is singing with the others…and of course Allison included.

I know that Kris has his talents and he is as cute as he can be, seriously. But if I’m just looking at it from a singing competition standpoint, he is the one that should have been out last week instead of Allison. Of course, Danny bombed on rock week, but he is still a better singer than Kris. As Danny said himself, he “bit off a song that was bigger than him.”

Of course this is all my opinion….I’m sure many will disagree. :smile_wp:
