Tonight on Dancing With The Stars, the pros performed a tribute to Michael Jackson.

A hyper-active LaToya Jackson introduced the tribute, and as it turns out, Michael was a DWTS fan!

I would have preferred the So You Think You Can Dance tribute Nigel Lythgoe was planning before Sony Music shot down his request for rights to the music.

But, once I got over the cheesy house band renditions of the songs and focused on the pros superior dancing, I really enjoyed the DWTS tribute. The thriller dance never ever gets old.

A clip of the pros talking about Michael cut with thoughts from Jermain Jackson ran prior to the tribute. Young dancers, across the board, owe a debt of gratitude to MJ.

Videos after the JUMP…

Hey MJ, not sure how to contact you so I’m doing it here. Ryan Tedder demo of Halo leaked, and it doesn’t sound anything like Already Gone. Thought you might like to listen. http://www.mediafire.com/?yydtn2zynzk

Went back and found the interview he talked about it in. http://www.star94.com/cindyandray/Story.aspx?ID=1146282 Explaining what happened with the song in the interview (first clip) at around 3:02.

Nice tribute to MJ with his mother and others in the audience. RIP MJ.

  • Grammie Kari

There’s nothing like the real music sung by Michael Jackson, but I found this tribute to be nice. There was a bit of competittion between Mark and Derick which was cool. Nice tribute; great dancing.

  • abbysee

    That was fun to watch.

  • TwigLA

That was nice. I enjoyed the dancing and seeing and hearing Germaine Jackson speaking about his brother. Michael was a fantastic performer and dancer. Only thing I wish he would have not given us is the ‘crotch grab’ dance move.

I don’t know what Ryan Tedder had to do with it.

I had been wondering why LaToya had been hanging around for a few weeks. So when they announced the tribute it finally made sense.

I’m sure we’ll get a SYTYCD tribute this season. The Canadian version did one that used Janet’s choreographer. However, I’d really like to see Wade get to dance Michael with maybe the Top 10. I’ll keep my fingers crossed…..

I’m glad Derek recovered enough to do this. LOL at Karina and Maks being in separate segments.

One more example of why DWTS needs to abandon the live music and use recordings. Yes, I know they want the energy of a live performance. So fire the crappy vocalists and go instrumental- the band itself is not bad but I am so over hearing good songs butchered by barely adequate (and sometimes even that is a stretch) vocalists.

The dancing itself was great. I thoroughly enjoyed watching some of my fave pros doing the signature Jackson moves. MJ’s choreography was as stunning and original as Fosse’s and he deserves every bit of recognition he receives.
    More.

I agree that the house band renditions were cheesey, but I really enjoyed the thriller dance reinactment! MJ inspired dance in so many ways. It was a nice tribute. I’m glad they did it.

    dbl post

Thriller was excellent, the rest was lame.

Technically the dancing was top notch, but there was no heart or connection with the music, just movement and leg kicking.

Technically the dancing was top notch, but there was no heart or connection with the music, just movement and leg kicking.

It was too polished. The beauty of Michael Jackson was he was raw. Just raw talent. He didn’t have a dance or voice lesson in his life.

  • LoveDaRocker

I agree: the Thriller dance does not get old. It gets me everytime.

  • marg

Technically maybe ok…but it sucked! Agreed No heart or connection….bet the kids over at “You think you can dance” could pull it off!!!!

  • champ

damn, do i love chelsie hightower.

  • SharB

really nice dancing of the pros and I agree the music (singers) sucked.

  • Grammie Kari

Yes, DWTS needs better singers; however, they keep telling us how great these singers are.

  • Squirrely

I wonder why DWTS were permitted to use the songs but SYTYCD was not?

  • mandabutter

I loved the tribute, very touching. Loved the pros being all together. Cheryl, Edyta, and Derek were awesome IMO. Nice job to all involved, they pulled it off!!

    >>DWTS SIDENOTE: Did they announce anything about a double elimination next week??? If I remember correctly, when the cast was announced on GMA- they said somewhere around week 6 (we just finished week5) there would be 3 consecutive weeks of double eliminations…With Delay dropping out b/c of an injury and they eliminated Debi Mazar based on votes they would forgo that early plan and just have 2 weeks of double elim.

But I didn’t hear Tom mention it last night, however- he did say something about a dance marathon type of thing next week. **MJ, I also read somewhere from TMZ or a TV Guide-ish mag (something with a T, lol)that ABC will cancel an upcoming result show cuz of poor ratings on Tuesday nights -having the judges send a couple home at the end of the performance night, perhaps vetoing America’s decision or not having us vote at all…?? Is this true?

  • mandabutter

Perhaps they couldn’t or wouldn’t clear songs from his catalog so close to his death because of Will and royalty issues?? They didn’t know who was in control of his estate until August.
It may also be that Nigel/SYTYCD wanted a performance night of 10 routines performed to 10 MJ songs, whereas Dancing had live singers in a tribute routine on a non-voting night… just a thought. Randy’s ABDC also did a Jackson tribute dance with all crews on a non-voting night.
It could be keeping things in good taste, timing, legality, or its about the $$$$$$. :)

I loved it. They were energetic and really into the music. I love this group of dancers. Derek Hough was a real standout. Very enjoyable. Thanks for posting the video.

Sorry about my post about Ryan, he doesn’t have anything to do with this. This post just happened to be at the top of the page and I didn’t know where else to put it. The dance is cool though. We’ll probably be hearing a lot more Thriller with Halloween being only a few days away.
