Dancing With The Stars 15 – Week 4 – Recap and Videos

Live blogging Dancing With The Stars. Paula Abdul is set to guest judge tonight! The All Star couples battle it out with dances they chose for each other. Lots of off-beat and dances never performed before on DWTS. LIFTS WILL BE ALLOWED!

You know what? Paula Abdul’s turn as judge tonight really made me miss her!  She was really fun to watch tonight, like the Pauler of old.  She played off Bruno kind of the way she did with Simon–particularly with the flirting–and I thought it worked pretty well. If Carrie Ann decides to move on (I can’t imagine she would) Paula could step in for her.

Tonight’s wacky dance styles were a challenge for some of the dancers. Bollywood, Bolero and Contemporary were out of the wheelhouse of the dancers who performed the routines. And  anyone who is a fan of So You Think You Can Dance knows how those routines should be performed. But, we’re taking about non-dancers here,. so Gilles, Apolo and Emmitt really deserved to be graded on a curve.  I loved Sabrina and Louis’ disco. Lots of intricate lifts. Melissa and Tony had some great choreography too. Derek and Shawn’s mambo was just spectacular. They lucked out with a dance that was tailor made for the pair.

Bristol and Mark performed a very rudimentary routine adequately. They deserve to go home, but I don’t think it will happen. Either Kirsty and Maks will leave, or there will be another shocker.

First, a video package introducing PAULER. Paula says she’s looking for Simon and Randy. (She’s sitting between Len and Bruno). No. Just kidding. She’s looking for the dancers to PUSH THEIR BOUNDARIES. Because you know THERE ARE NO BOUNDARIES.

Kirstie and Maks – The Charleston – Maks is pushing Kirstie to be more than a actress and a comedian. Kirstie jumps out of a cake. The Charleston is perfect for Kirstie, because it give her the opportunity to clown. Her dancing is so so, but she does a Lucille Ball turn, and it’s entertaining. Len says “You turn Monday into a fun day. I would have liked it a little cleaner here and there.” Paula “What a way to start out the night. You danced it wonderfully.” Bruno says, “You’re a mad woman and I love you for it.” OMG he compared her “whale dance” to Shelly Winters. It’s true! Carrie Ann says, “You look stunning. You played to your strengths.” Carrie Ann – 7.4 Len – 7.5 Paula – 7.5 Bruno – 7.5 – 301-800-868-3412

Bristol and Mark – Rock and Roll – They dance to “At the Hop”. OMG Mark might dress up as a bunny. HE REALLY WANTS TO GO HOME. Shades of Bristol’s MONKEY SUIT. She’s having trouble picking up the steps. “Can’t you just make it easier,” Bristol whines. Mark is frustrated that she wants to dumb it down. SHE IS SO ANNOYING. She knows she doesn’t have to work hard. She’ll get votes anyway. Mark is not dressed as a bunny. Sadz. Yeah. There’s pretty much nothing going on with this dance. She’s doing OK, but there’s NO heavy lifting here. Paula says, “I definitely see improvement, and you look like you’re having fun. Paula tells Bristol to allow Mark to push her.” You were hitting all the steps. You were focused. You were doing every step. Well done.” Carrie Ann runs out to the dance floor to tell Bristol up close Bruno says, “Good job! You are truly blossoming.” Len says, “The only real failure is the failure to try. You’re best dance so far.” Carrie Ann – 8 Len – 8 Paula – 8 Bruno – 8 – 32. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? – 1-800-868-3409

Sabrina and Louis – Disco – They want to bring the disco nightclub to the stage. There were a couple of wobbles in the routine, but Disco is deceptively difficult. There were tons of lifts and flips and tricks in the dance. Overall, it was really spectacular. Bruno says, “This was probably your most vibrant and alive. You lost timing twice. But, you had all the glitz and the glamour.” Carrie Ann says, “This time you showed us something very different. You did have a bad dismount.” Len says, “I loved it, well done.” Paula says, “You choreographed to Sabrina’s strengths. Carrie Ann – 9, Len – 9 Paula -8.5, Bruno – 9 – 35.5. – 1-800-868-3403

Emmitt and Cheryl – Bolero – Cheryl is not trained in Bolero. She brought in some choreographers to help. I’ve never seen this dance before, so I’m not sure how to judge it. I thought it was a little clunky, but the judges disagree. Carrie Ann says, “There’s nothing better than watching a big man get all sexy. You articulated your lines gracefully.” Len says, “It’s flow. But lovely fluidity of movement. Your lifts were clean.” Paula says, “It was exquisite. Sensual. You are a sexy beast! You captivated us with less is more.” Bruno says, “The mood was steamier that August in Louisiana. You just got it, man.” Carrie Ann – 9, Len – 9 Paula – 9 Bruno – 9 – 361-800-868-3413

Paula says SHE”S HAVING THE BEST TIME. She’s filled with gratitude.

Gilles and Peta – Bollywood – Peta is really scared of Bollywood. She brings in a Bollywood expert to help choreograph. Gilles says it’s the biggest challenge he’s had this season. What’s funny, the judges really have no idea how to judge this dance. It wasn’t perfect, but it was SO difficult. Amazing. Gilles was fantastic considering the level o Len says, “I liked this. It was hotter than a curry. Total commitment and you go for it.” Paula is imitating Bruno and it’s pretty funny. Bruno says, “A Bollywood superstar is born. Perfection. Superstar.” Carrie Ann says, “That was beyond belief. FANTASTIC.” Carrie Ann – 10, Len – 9.5 Paula – 10 Bruno – 10 – I think the novelty of the dance added to the score – 39.51-800-868-3410

Melissa and Tony – Jitterbug – The duo flew to Dallas to Melissa’s home. Melissa is hung up on being compared to Shawn. They jitterbug to a 50′s theme. There are a ton of ambitious lifts and tricks in the dance. They had a little wobble on one of the lifts, but it was a difficult one! Paula says, “You dance like you’ve been dancing together forever. Footwork impeccable. You nailed. it.” Bruno, “Fearless and Fierce. Your didn’t miss a beat, you missed slightly on a dismount.” “You’re so light on your feet. Tony, your choreo is exceptional.” Len says, “I’d rather you fail going for it. Whatever dance you do is clean and correct.” – Carrie Ann – 9, Len – 9, Paula – 9.5, Bruno – 9.5 – 371-800-868-3406

Shawn and Derek – Mambo – Shawn is also back home, wherever she lives. She’s looking forward to the lifts! Derek begins playing on some big bongos. They dance to Santana. That was very dramatic and very good! Lots of lifts and fantastic moves. Derek choreographed that beautifully. Bruno says, “You think you’ve seen it all, and it keeps getting better.” Carrie Ann says, “You guys are on fire. You finish ever single line. Perfect syncronization.” Len says, “I really liked it. That is brilliant.” Paula says, “Shawn, you have changed into this sexy young lady.” Paula keeps pawing Bruno. They are totally getting a perfect score watch. Carrie Ann – 10 Len 9.5, Paula 10 – Bruno 10 – 39.5 Ooohhh almost a perfect score! – 1-800-868-3402

Apolo and Karina – Hip Hop – Karina knows nothing about hip hop. She also brings in some assistance. Sparkly hoodies! Hip hop fits Apolo. They’re both doing a solid job, considering. After they finish, Karina sits on the stage and cries. What’s up. I think she hurt herself. But, she’s not hurt. She thinks she messed up the whole routine. Carrie Ann says, “Everyone is outside their comfort zone. We know that. I loved they way you brought a modern twist to it.” Len says, “You came out and you were fantastic! You were great!” Paula says, “Everyone else loves you in this ball room. Apolo, you’ve got the swag.” Bruno says, “You covered it well, you did a great job.” Actually, I didn’t notice a big mistake either. I’ll have to watch it back. Carrie Ann 8.5, Len – 9, Paula – 8.5, Bruno – 8.5 – 34.51-800-868-3407

Kelly and Val – Contemporary – Kelly broke her toe. Whoops. Val has never danced contemporary before. Will he ask for help? Nope. He’s going to handle it himself. Ha. They dancing to “Fix You”. This is like a rip off of a SYTYCD routine. WHY SO SERIOUS? It’s a bit of a cliche. Val carries Kelly to the judges table. Len says, “You are the biggest revelation to me. Fabulous.” Paula says, “It was a beautiful routine.” Bruno says, “Your task was the hardest tonight. You did it beautifully. I believed every moment.” Carrie Ann says, “You laid your heart out there. The lines were gorgeous to match.” She notes that it wasn’t perfect. It wasn’t. Oh my gosh. They don’t care about scores! Kelly gets all deep saying DWTS is all about the journey blah blah blah.  Carrie Ann – 9 Len – 9.5, Paula -9.5, Bruno – 9.5 – 37.51-800-868-3411

Loved Kirstie and Maks’ charleston!  That was so entertaining!

I like how tonight’s show will have dance styles that aren’t usually done on this show.  I just wish someone would’ve chosen tap.  I bet Sabrina could’ve handled it.

  • supersonic

Guilty pleasures next week?  I’m calling it already — that is going to suck.

  • http://twitter.com/bentley1530 Bentley1530

So how is rock and roll different from the jive?  Also why all of the love from the judges for Bristol?  Her scores are too high.

  • yksask

Seriously eights for Bristol. Please make her go away!

  • supersonic

They want Bristol to stick around.  They know she brings the controversy.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Ugh. I’m glad I’m not watching. lol

  • Karen C

Louis and Sabrina remind me of Dance Fever.  Yes, I’m dating myself…

  • http://twitter.com/bentley1530 Bentley1530

Wow, that disco number was hard and a bit scary. Great job!

  • http://twitter.com/doesmonaknow DoesMonaKnow

At least the last time around the fuss around Bristol seemed to correspond with high ratings. Maybe the producers are worried that viewership would be even lower without her around? I just think lightning really can’t strike twice. Bristol may “kick off” more talented dancers again but we’ve all been through that before and it was more “shocking” the first time around.

  • http://twitter.com/MikhailXO MichaelG (MikhailXO)

I’m beginning to feel extreme loathing toward Bristol…blame those judges…

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/3MRTNRPCABPC323UYQGMG2XC6E LeMarie

Yay for Bristol, she is improving every show and deserved her score tonight.

  • http://twitter.com/MikhailXO MichaelG (MikhailXO)

Ha ha! Paula said “captivised” to Emmit before quickly realising it ain’t a word and changing it to “captivated” …LOL!
PS…am I the only one who still doesn’t like stiff Brooke?

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

Could someone please explain to me how Bristol and Mark could get 8′s with that simplistic routine? Ugh.

  • supersonic

With her nutty fanbase and the judges (producers) propping her, Bristol is going to be there at the end.  She’s going to make the finals.  I don’t know who she’s going to be in there with, but she will be there.  It’s not fair, but this is what they wanted when they put her on the show.

If she makes it through tomorrow night, I’m not going to be shocked.

  • yksask

    Okay Gilles looks beyond hot!

  • http://twitter.com/MikhailXO MichaelG (MikhailXO)

No…my apologies…alas, I cannot explain it, nor can anyone else. It’s inexplicable.

  • supersonic
I’m beginning to feel extreme loathing toward Bristol…blame those judges…

The judges are just doing what the producers tell them to.

  • http://twitter.com/MikhailXO MichaelG (MikhailXO)

Gilles is so handsome, so talented..sigh…
    Gilles needs to win this!

  • Incipit

Karen C, I’m not watching – I’ll have to wait for the videos here – but speaking of dating oneself – here’s a Time Stamp – IDK if I can abide watching Bristol ‘dance’ to “At the Hop” – that was the first 45RPM record I ever purchased with my own money – danced to it innumerable times – it’s even faster than the Charleston, and if she can’t hit Every.Single.Backbeat – and get the footwork and spins right – don’t even bother. IMO.

I’ll check back, but – - Already prepared to be disappointed.

  • http://twitter.com/desireechick Kesia Monteith

I don’t even hate Bristol anymore. I’m blaming those producers who wants to continue this charade controversy nonsense further. I mean, for Christ sakes, their ratings are always down these days, no where near the glory times. Don’t they think keeping her around is hurting the show more than helping? If she was a good dancer, I would still dislike her (lol) but respect her moves. But she will always be awful. Even though her politics are different from me, if she was entertaining or fun to watch, I wouldn’t be that upset about her staying. But her attitude makes her so damn unlikable, being bloody brat for nothing. Anyway, people are voting for her, so I can be fed up all I like, but people can vote how they choose. I can’t even be fed up over the judges over scoring her, so be it, as annoying as that is. The producers thought it would be for shit and giggles to bring her back, but she ain’t Carson Kressly. Their decision to bring her back is just stupid. :(

  • http://twitter.com/bentley1530 Bentley1530

OK these dances are starting to make me miss SYTYCD.  I do not want to see these non dancers trying these dances that they and their partner/coaches have never done before.

  • quickjessie

Based on your accurate description of how this dance should be done, do yourself a favor and just skip this video for your mental health.

  • iluvai

I loved that dance!  Gilles is amazing!

  • http://twitter.com/desireechick Kesia Monteith

Here, here. I kinda don’t mind Charleston, Mambo, or Disco, because those are partner type dances. But Bollywood? Contemporary? I mean, really? Hip Hop?

  • yksask

He danced ???? I must have been busy looking at his chest :) They were great.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/3MRTNRPCABPC323UYQGMG2XC6E LeMarie

It doesn’t matter how improved Bristol is, she will not get a break on this site. She is judged by who she is and not how she dances.  I hope she is around til the end so her fans can see how much she improves. The hatred for Bristol is just sad.

  • http://twitter.com/raya4 raya

I don’t really like it when they make the pros tackle dances they have absolutely no clue how to do themselves.  How are they expected to teach dances they aren’t trained in properly?  I mean, obviously I see they bring in experts to help.  But I find it sort of annoying that some couples get things like Mambo & Rock, while others have to deal with Bolero, Bollywood & Contemporary.

  • keware

Melissa shouldn’t try to keep up with Shawn. Shawn hasn’t even come close to doing the tricks that she’s capable of. She and Derek are still playing it safe.

  • yksask

I could care less who she is. She is far and away the worst dancer on this show and should have been gone a long time ago.

  • iluvai

Melissa is really an amazing dancer. I agree with Carrie Ann that Melissa is light on her feet and makes it look effortless.

  • Stavros

Paula is awesome. I love the DWTS judges, but if they ever would need a replacement or want to add a 4th judge, Paula is the girl to go to. She looks so happy and totally in her element :)

  • iluvai

I think Hip Hop is one of the hardest kinds of dancing to pull off unless you are just amazing at it.  It will be interesting!

  • Chris

Her dancing is not even in the same league.   This isn’t the season for “improvements.”  Its all stars.  Be fabulous or go home.  Instead, she’s marginal and stays due to sympathy or politics.

I’m on the boards to check how my favorites are doing (Giles and Shawn), but I’m watching the Voice every week until, as Hall and Oates say, “She’s Gone”.

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

Now, Bollywood is my favorite dance and I am in 7th Heaven!  Of course, with Gilles that would be normal.  Favorite Bollywood dance ever?  I believe that would be the 5 young ladies on “So You Think You Can Dance”.  However, tonight was special!

  • supersonic

Melissa – definition of blah.  Didn’t see anything special about that dance and she needs to stop comparing herself to Shawn.

  • Chris

“With her nutty fanbase and the judges (producers) propping her, Bristol is going to be there at the end.”

This is why I’m watch the Voice battle rounds.  I find the battle rounds so slow and boring but its better than watching Bristol once again get the lowest score, then knock off a better dancer.

I’ll wait for MJ to post the videos so I can just the good stuff and block out BP.

  • iluvai

Derek and Shaun are so cute together. I love Shaun’s personality.

  • iluvai

Shawn and Derek deserve a perfect score. Wow.

  • Incipit

…just skip this video for your mental health.

Very good point, quickjessie. After reading the comments, my low expectations turned to No expectations. Don’t need to see ’50′s R&R turned into a badly executed parody of itself.

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

I am really enjoying Paula being on the show.  Dancing is her love!

  • iluvai

Len ruined it for Shawn!  Darn it!

  • keware

Kelly and Val’s “we are so sexy” gig looks stupid.

  • http://twitter.com/desireechick Kesia Monteith

Karina, I feel your pain, but ya need to stop your Bristol Pailin-esque whining and suck it up, darling.

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

Karen C. Honestly, “At the Hop” by Danny & the Juniors was the first record I ever bought.  I could dance circles around Bristol.  My Granddaughter could dance circles around Bristol.  Forget the politics – we want to see the best dancers to appear on the show!

  • teekee

Karina  and Apollo are not good tonight.

  • iluvai

    Apollo was better than Karina.

  • http://twitter.com/raya4 raya

Paula really does fit in well here.  Enjoying her immensely.  FWIW I think Shawn is amazing, but I do think she comes with a bit of an advantage in any of these routines where tricks are allowed.  Heck, even where tricks aren’t allowed since that didn’t stop them last week.

I don’t think it’s any accident both Kirstie & Bristol went at the top of the show.  I think the show is trying to get rid of one or the other, though it still won’t work most likely.

Poor Karina/Apolo.  Honestly, she looked more like she was struggling with the dance than he was, even before the fall.  This is why I’m not a fan of pushing the actual pros that far outside of their comfort zone.

  • http://twitter.com/raya4 raya

So I feel bad for Apollo, but a 9 for that?

  • http://twitter.com/bentley1530 Bentley1530

Come on, the hip hop was weak and this crying is getting on my nerves.

  • teekee

Hip hop was very weak. IMO, over scored.

  • http://twitter.com/desireechick Kesia Monteith

I thought the hip hop was fine, but yeah the crying got on my last nerve. All that pouting was unnecessary, and now people are going to vote for them out of pity. Cheryl was thrown for a loop too, and she didn’t sit and mop. Get over it. Geez. Made me realize why I could never warm up to Karina.

  • yksask

That had to be the hardest dance to choreograph this week. i think Karina was genuinely upset.

  • http://twitter.com/desireechick Kesia Monteith

I am so damn tired of their primping and posing and making sexy faces. They are nauseating. I’ve come to realize I just don’t like them personally.

  • iluvai

Looking forward to this contemporary. I think they might nail it.

  • supersonic

They are really pushing this showmance angle with Kelly and Val.

  • http://twitter.com/desireechick Kesia Monteith

This week is where Pasha, Lacey, and Dimitry as partners would come in handy, if ya know what I mean ;)

  • keware

I don’t like her at all. She’s taking this way too seriously. She looks miserable most of the time. They better not get a 10. They were very off sync in the middle.

  • supersonic

This is why I don’t watch SYTYCD.  That Contemporary dance made me laugh.  And I was so sure they would get 10′s across the board for that.

  • teekee

I believe that she was upset, but why was it the hardest dance to choreograph?

  • yksask

White girl, not 20 doing hip hop. Just feel that the others dances that some of the stars had never done before were still rythmic in nature. Hip hop is not.

  • http://twitter.com/FordBrothersHD FB

First, I must say that SYTYCD blows this show out of the water when it comes to some of these styles (contemporary, hip hop, bollywood). Go watch ANY routine on SYTYCD from this past season and you will see a difference. And not just a small difference either.

If Gilles did that bollywood on SYTYCD, they would have critiqued his hands more, foot placement, and called it a slower than it needed to be bollywood.

If Kelly did that contemporary on SYTYCD, they would have critiqued not enough passion, not enough contemporary movement, and sorry, but a lack of a REAL connection.

And if Apolo did that hip hop on SYTYCD, oh boy… let me just say that “buck” it was not.

All that being said, I commend this show for trying to step out of the usual ballroom zone and doing something new. But I would actually rather them stick with what they know. I was much more entertained last week as compared.

As for the ELIMINATION, could it be any more obvious Kirstie going? She went first, lowest scores, Bristol did okay by this show’s standards and just…yeah. Kirstie is out.

  • http://twitter.com/desireechick Kesia Monteith

I hope Sabrina or Melissa doesn’t go home. I think they are in deep trouble. :/

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

Kesia Lacey, Dmitry, and Pasha are favorites with me.  Being on SYTYCD gave them a more extended background. If I were one of these pros doing a dance I don’t know, I would go to YouTube and look up a SYTYCD presentation.

I really did enjoy the show this week.  There was nothing boring and a great challenge.  I like when people are out of their comfort zone and find success!

  • http://twitter.com/FordBrothersHD FB

I think they will be fine. Sabrina gets that bottom 3 boost from last week and Melissa did very well and has yet to be in jeopardy even when she danced early. It has to be Kirstie.

Should be Bristol but will be Kirstie.

  • http://twitter.com/FordBrothersHD FB

I am actually surprised that Chelsie and/or Lacey didn’t get a call from one of the pros to come in and give them some tips. Chelsie especially because she had to do numerous contemporary routines during her season.

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

Every week I have been short changed in getting in my alloted votes, but tonight I got in 5 votes and was shut down.  Is anyone else having this problem?

  • Chris

Yeah, I’m clicking through the vids and Sabrina’s performance was good, high energy but the lift/wobbles at the end didn’t help.

Gilles and Shaun seem to be unstoppable.

  • callmecrazy

Gonna have to watch the video provided here instead of waiting for DWTS to start here on the west coast…so much tv programs to watch tonight:D

  • callmecrazy

Kirstie and Maks-Charleston…I actually enjoyed it.  Well, the ending was kinda bizarre for me, but overall it was good.

  • callmecrazy

    Bristol and Mark-Rock and Roll…*UGH*

  • teekee

I totally agree with your SYTYCD comparisons. Had to keep reminding myself that these people aren’t dancers. On the upside, I think I enjoyed the show tonight because there were a few dances I hadn’t seen on this show. Don’t know who’s going.

  • teekee

Yes. Got in 5 on the cell. Did get them all on the landline.

  • callmecrazy

Sabrina and Louis-Disco…wowza, did all the girls have Lion King hair back in the disco days? :O  *doing the hustle*

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

For some reason, I thought maybe Twitch would be brought in to help Karina and Apolo. LOL.   I think Apolo had the right attitude for Hip Hop dance!

  • callmecrazy

Emmitt and Cheryl-Bolero…so this is what a Bolero dance looks like eh?  I hope they never make it a permanent dance in DWTS.  *yawn*

  • iluvai

That was a really difficult dance. They did the “bump” too, so fun(ny)!

  • callmecrazy

Gilles and Peta-Bollywood…ahhhhh Gilles sure can make parachute pants sexayyyy!  This song “Jai ho” was remixed with the Pussycat Dolls/featuring Nicole Sherzinger(sp?).

  • callmecrazy

Melissa and Tony-Jitterbug…*dejavu*.  But still oh so fun to watch them dance.

  • callmecrazy

    Shawn and Derek-Mambo….deserved their scores.

  • callmecrazy

Apollo and Karina-Hiphop….uhmm, this is NOT a good, not even a decent, not even a close hiphop*BOO*.  And somebody call Karina a wahhhhhbulance….sheesh, get it together girlie.

  • callmecrazy

Kelly and Val-Contemporary….now I love me this couple but dang, this dance is like a Harlequin/housewife porn book come to life…me no likey!

  • http://twitter.com/FordBrothersHD FB

Did anyone else think it was totally uncalled for when Val called Cheryl a bitch and continued harping on the idea that Cheryl tried to sabotage he and Kelly giving them contemporary? He looked serious.

  • callmecrazy

    Loved it…:D

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=195101108 Stefan Wind

Gave 2/3 of my votes to Melissa and the other 1/3 to Sabrina. I hope both of these girls make it through this week.
Giles was the best of the night for me, but I know he has the fans at this point. Kelly annoyed me for the first time this week with her “walking the green mile/my pet hamster died” brooding look on her face for the entire episode. Get over yourself. You’re being paid to be there.
Shawn was fantastic tonight, but as usual it doesn’t come as a surprise, oh and Derek Hough gets on my last nerve. The End. =)

  • http://www.twitter.com/sarahruth3 Sarah

My favorite Bollywood routine is still Katee & Joshua’s on SYTYCD season 4, but Gilles definitely did a great job with a difficult dance style.

I can’t remember who picked for Shawn & Derek, but whoever it was definitely did them a solid because that was freakin’ awesome. Still love her. You can tell she just came off of 2 years of elite gymnastics training – her stamina is awesome. It cracks me up when Derek’s panting up storm & Shawn’s just standing there grinning.

I don’t want Maks & Kirstie to go, but I have a feeling her time might be up tomorrow. I *wish* Bristol would go, and tonight almost felt like the judges were damning her with faint praise, but I doubt it’s gonna work.

SYTYCD is definitely better at the more diverse styles – those hip hop, Contemp, & even Bollywood routines weren’t up to snuff as far as what I’ve seen on SYTYCD – but they were still passable. Good on DWTS for wanting to challenge these allstars. It’s been making for an interesting season, IMO.

  • callmecrazy

I think it is hard for Kelly to release the dramatics she plays on General Hospital.

  • callmecrazy

If he was serious…he should apologize, man up and just DANCE!

  • dabney c

I hope Kelly was crying because her foot hurt, and not because she moved herself to tears with the dance.

Overall I didn’t hate it .. and I LOVED the rolled-out-of-bed look on both of them.

  • rufustfirefly2

I thought Gilles looked awkward with the Bollywood dance.  No way did it deserve 10′s.  Also, the novelty of that style of dance has worn off.  But I give him points for his athleticism and determination!

Kelly’s dance = barf.  She and Val were clearly expecting 10′s with that overwrought dance.

I think Louis never gets enough credit for his choreography; especially the difficulty of his routines.

But overall, a very entertaining night of dance.  Even Shawn and Derek didn’t annoy me!  Good job, kids!

  • Lovesyesha

Okay, so don’t get me wrong, I think Gilles is fantastic too, but I don’t understand the lack of love for Shawn on here. Is it because there are a lot of Gilles fans and she beat him the first time?

Derek is great with her, totally likeable, and Shawn actually seems like the sweetest, most humble celebrity of all of them. She never whines or puts anyone down including her partner, and she just gets out there and delivers spectacular performances. I think she might actually be my favorite to ever be on the show. Can someone explain why people on here are so lukewarm towards her?

SYTYCD is definitely better at the more diverse styles – those hip hop, Contemp, & even Bollywood routines weren’t up to snuff as far as what I’ve seen on SYTYCD

I agree. For tacking styles that were unfamiliar for both the pros and the stars, they deserved to be graded on a curve.

Stefan Wind, have you ever danced with a broken toe?  It is pure torture!  Depending on the extent of the fracture, Kelly may have been on painkillers.  Healing time may be 6 weeks or longer.  I don’t know how she’s going to wear heels next week.  At least, I hope she’s there next week.

So how is rock and roll different from the jive?

Bentley1530, you couldn’t tell from this routine, because they were not actually ‘doing’50′s rock and roll. It’s based off of swing dancing, just like Jive is, but there are differences, like the tap step that mirrors the strong back beat of rock instead of the 8 to the bar boogie rhythm, which uses walking steps. And instead of one swing move after another, or side by side dancing, the dancers were mostly in contact, with one or both hands, executing single and double spins and fancy footwork, and a few swing moves.

There were variations that reversed the Jive pattern, stationary where it used to travel, and traveling where it used to be a rock-step in place – and another where the steps are in triple time. We got none of that. The routine mixed a few elements of jive, the ‘idea’ of 50′s couples dancing was briefly touched on, the rest they took from swing steps, especially the little foot flicks…in R&R, those feet would be pounding out the back beat – not waving in the air.

My generation danced their asses off constantly, just for fun –  - and I know how the dances of that era are done -

As Kariann Hart said “coulda danced circles” around that. Also – I saw – your first 45 record? You too? Cool.

Yes. I looked at the video, Bently1530, just because you asked that ?. Ugh. It was so pedestrian, and worse; It wasn’t rock and roll.

ha ha. Jimmy Kimmel wants Honey boo boo and June on DWTS. lol….

  • Ratna12

I got 9 votes each on 4 phones for Kelly.
I hope that she will be back next week and can dance OK with her foot problem.

I still think Giles will win and deservedly.

Incipit has it so right about doing 50′s r&r! I was too young for “At the Hop”, early Elvis, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis. But I started watching American Bandstand with my babysitter when I was seven or eight and that’s when she taught me to dance that crazy r&r! So even as a young girl, I knew how it’s done. Sorry, Bristol that ain’t it! Not even close. The funny thing is that I was going to come on here and write that Mark dumbed down the choreography and then I read MJ’s recap and found out that Bristol asked him to make it easier! I somehow missed their practice video.  Lucky me! So that explains it! This girl doesn’t want to be pushed, poor baby!

At least there are people here from back in the day who know how it’s done.  Even at my age I could do a lot better than Bristol. She is a total embarrassment and does not belong in this competition. The judges overscored her big time!

    Some other thoughts –

I did want to say to those who watch SYTYCD regularly and were criticizing some of these dances that have been done on that show, well let’s see those dancers do ballroom dancing. Some of these dances were new to a few of these pros. I think in the limited time they had, there were some brilliant performances. I loved Gilles and Peta’s Bollywood. I don’t know if it really was Bollywood, but what they did was great. There was a lot of changeup in tempo and the movements were intricate and tricky. I don’t know if it deserved those scores, but I loved it.

I was also happy to see Sabrina step up and bring the fun and entertainment to her performance. She captured the magic of disco. Yes, I am again dating myself but I could do some mean disco back in the day.  It was a marvelous routine.  She seems to understand now that being technically great isn’t enough.

Shaun and Derek are a match made in dance heaven! That was a mambo and a half! Just exquisite technically, wonderful lifts and moves added in appropriately without losing the flavor of this sexy latin dance. It was probably the best of the night. I think Melissa should focus on just doing her best and not get into a personal competition with Shaun because she cannot win. I think she and Tony pushed themselves maybe harder than they needed to with the lifts, but I do commend them for not playing it safe. Tony and Melissa are so filled with joy and fun on that dance floor. It’s infectious!

Emmitt had a very tricky dance. I am not sure exactly what bolero is, but I thought this dance had some resemblance to the rumba.  It’s hard for a big guy to pull off, but I thought this was Emmitt’s best dance. He was moving those hips and getting into the feel of this dance.

I don’t listen to hip-hip music and know nothing about hip-hop dancing. So I couldn’t really judge Appolo and Karina.  I didn’t see anything so I don’t know why Karina got so upset. I don’t think she was playing the sympathy card. These pros take a lot of responsibility on themselves and obviously she felt that her performance wasn’t good enough.  I hope that it doesn’t hurt Appolo. I could not sit there tomorrow night and watch him leave and Bristol stay! Perish the thought!

I think it could be Kirstie going home, only because I believe that Bristol will unfortunately stay in the competition.

  • iluvai

Great post. So many spot on observations.  I think Kirstie is the one going home, but dang the chemistry between Kirstie and Maks is so great. Kirstie makes Maks likeable.  I love seeing the fun side of him.  Bristol should be long gone!!

I watched the show tonight and I will say if this was Paula Abdul’s chemisty test for DTWS she passed with flying colors. It was like the old Paula from her Idol days. She made me smile for ear to ear a big reason Idol has slipped is becaue its missing its heart in Abdul who championed talent/contestants. Anyways she had great chemistry with all the other judges. Loved her with Bruno. A much much better fit for her than X Factor which IMO she looked so uncomfortable in. She looked much more relaxed and authentic here. If I were ABC I would sign Paula up for a series regular contract.

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

Chris Corey, I agree that Paula seemed so happy and that she belonged there.  However, I don’t think DWTS will disrupt the existing chemistry.  It was just so much fun seeing Paula where she belonged!

derek is a genius  they should bring him to choreograph on SYTYCD. if louis can do it, so can he.

  • Incipit

Paula was able to play to her strengths as a choreographer – she doesn’t have to resort to talking about ‘colors’ and making weird comparisons – she has the language for this – and she brings that ultra supportive persona backed up with knowing what she’s talking about.

Her impersonation of Bruno was dead funny and dead on – they were all great together. IMO.

So who was the missing regular? Heh.

  • hcpoirot

You cannot compare tonight dances with SYTYCD dancers. First of all, most of the celebs except for maybe Melissa are not dancers. Yes they can move but they are not professional dancers like SYTYCD contestants.

So even if they get Travis or Little C or Mia as choreographers, the result will be not as good as SYTYCD routines.

The toughest one had to be Bollywood , Hip Hop and Contemporary.

Not to mention the DWTS prof also never dance these 3 types of dances. So kudos to Giles, Apollo and Kelly to attempt these dances.

Mambo, Charleston, Jitterbug, Rock and Roll and even Bolero still somehow connected to Ballroom and Latin dances. (Bolero is Spanish/Cuba dance similar to Rumba)

The DWTS judge panel always looks like it’s having FUN! and I think that’s what’s missing from some of the singing contests….they take themselves too seriously.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Li-Wright/100001622678180 Li Wright

Kelly Monaco looked like a realllll pro out there; I wonder if she’s taking dance lessons?  My money is on Kelly to win again.

I did want to say to those who watch SYTYCD regularly and were criticizing some of these dances that have been done on that show, well let’s see those dancers do ballroom dancing.

Some of the non-ballroom dancers on that show are actually pretty passable in ballroom. Some have had a little cross-training in ballroom, some haven’t. The main difference is that most of them are professional dancers, so not only are they trained in their specialty, but they may also have that cross-training in other styles – as well as the ability to easily pick up choreography. But no matter their training, styles like Bollywood are new to EVERYONE who performs them.

That’s why I said that these dances were at least passable, and I agree with MJ, deserve to be graded on a curve. I do think the novelty of Bollywood attributed to the high scores, but it was also well executed.

Moving on – I forgot Sabrina & Louis in my first post. They did a really good job with that disco. I was thinking that Louis should come choreograph disco for SYTYCD, in addition to what he already choreographs. Ha. I hope she does get a bottom two bounce, because going early never really helps with votes period, and later dances outshined theirs, even though it was solid.

I did see where Karina messed up and while not blatantly awful, it was awkward and I knew that couldn’t be part of the choreography. I don’t think the tears were fake, I think she legitimately put a lot of pressure on herself and doesn’t want to be the straight up cause of them going home. I threw them a few sympathy votes, so… Whatever. But I also LIKE Apolo anyway, too.

Bolero was interesting. I remember them doing that on the show before, but I don’t remember a lot about it. I wasn’t sure what to look for, so I had no real opinion on the dance. Now that I know it’s like a Cuban Rumba of sorts, it makes sense, and I think Emmitt did do a good job with that. I remember him being good at the rhythmic dances ok his season, so this doesn’t surprise me.

I’m enjoying this season a lot. Sad we lost some fun “characters” early, but am still enjoying the dancing. Bristol is a non entity to me until she outlasts a real contender like Shawn or Gilles. Speaking of which, it’s looking like it could be a showdown between those two again in the end. I wouldn’t mind that one bit.

  • http://www.twitter.com/sarahruth3 Sarah

Oh and I forgot to say that I love love love that Derek references McKayla Maroney when trying to get sassiness out of Shawn. Seriously – LOVE that!

  • ellen8

Time for Bristol to go !!!   She has improved over her previous season but come on …   Even Kirstie is outdancing her.   I hate to see really talented dancers going home to keep Bristol there.   Others are so much more deserving.

My fave = Kelly !!   But I’m a huge fan of hers on GH – her acting skills are really paying off in her dances.

I love Kirstie and Maks together.  This was the combination that got me excited for all-stars.  While I always like Maks, sometimes he does get too intense to be fun.  But when he’s around Kirstie, he’s obviously having so much fun that he lets go of the competition.

I’ll still around to root for Gilles and Apolo until their inevitable defeat at the twinkle toes of Shawn and Derek, but it will definitely be less fun to watch once Kirstie goes.

Is there any way they could have Kirstie and Maks compete every season?

  • http://twitter.com/MikhailXO MichaelG (MikhailXO)

Morning after thoughts (i.e. bored at work and replaying the DWTS vids). Some salient features:
1.Val and Kelly are so doing it. No doubt. Soooooo obvious.
    2. Part of me wants  Derek and itsby-bitsy to win so Ballas blows a gasket and gives the producers shite about pairing him with no-talent Palin spawn.
    3. Gilles is a preternatural God. A certified God-man walking the earth. Gorgeous as all living hell and so damn talented. What other non-pro could have pulled off this Bollywood routine with such ease? He needs to win this.

  • http://twitter.com/MikhailXO MichaelG (MikhailXO)

Len ruined it for God-Man Gilles too. I mean….Bollywood? The 1/2 point crap was a bad idea–it only allows the judges to fudge their faves and for Len, the control freak, to withhold until ‘his stuffiness’ deems it a 10.

  • albean99

I’m already getting bored even though I was excited to see some of my favorites. It’s clear that they want Sean & Gilles to be in the finals and they are very good but I tend to rebel against the pre-planned favorites.  Sadly I don’t think Apolo will be around much longer so will root for Melissa & Emmit.  I’m not a Kelly fan even though she’s much improved.

I’m hoping Kirstie or Bristol will be gone but it’s more likely Kirstie. They’re both improved but so much less talented at dancing than the others that it’s not even funny.  I’m still annoyed at the producers for going for the cheap drama. It just embarrassing when far better dancers go home first.

Honey boo boo is too young (what poor pro would get a 7 year old?), but it would be a sight to see June try to squeeze into any of those costumes.

  • iluvai

Can’t wait to see the perfect performance from these judges!  :)
