Dancing With The Stars - Season 19

Tonight, the remaining five celebrities will compete on the tenth week of Dancing With the Stars and it’s the Semi-Finals, so they are all vying for a spot in next week’s finals.

The couples will have to dance two full individual routines to the SAME SONG (one plugged and one unplugged). And we’re off… Tom and Erin welcome us to the show, introduce the remaining contestants and transition right into the first dance from Sadie and Mark.

Sadie (Quickstep)

In their package, we learn that their “perfect” trio dance wasn’t so perfect after all and that Sadie actually improvised as she went along after forgetting the steps. It seemed to work out for them, but she says it took a toll on her confidence. Len didn’t find anything that he didn’t like about the dance, Julianne calls it brilliant (overstatement), Bruno loved that he gave it a twist and Carrie Ann thought her body contact was fantastic. They are way more thrilled about the dance than I am.

Tommy (Jazz)

Tommy was certain that they were headed home last week, but they are still here. He says his confidence is sky-high from the outpouring support from the public. While I think Tommy can be entertaining, he should have went home last week and hopefully, he gets his pink slip this week. But I’m not convinced he will. Julianne says the routine was “wild”, Bruno said he enjoyed every moment of it, Carrie Ann calls him the “M.V.P.” and Len says he couldn’t have done what Tommy has done.

They sort of switch roles this week as Derek struggles to come up with a routine. He says this happens every season and every season we watch him overcomes it. This is great and Derek kisses… Sasha. Bruno says she did very good, Carrie Ann was underwhelmed by the routine, Len compares it to cotton candy (and its not all sweet) and Julianne says she nailed it.

Janel (Paso Doble)

They get a visit from his brother and reigning champion, Maksim, and he tells them to give the public what they want. Boy do I miss seeing his handsome face every week. Val doesn’t want to blow his chance to win and you can tell by their routine. Talk about giving it your all. That was phenomenal. Carrie Ann wanted more (so did I), Len says it kept him satisfied, Julianne felt like they were one and Bruno says they set the stage on fire. Raves across the board and rightfully so.

Alfonso (Argentine Tango)

He is dealing with a back injury and didn’t know if he would be able to continue in the competition, while Witney is excited because she never made it this far in the competition. For the first time, I’m actually underwhelmed by what he is selling. He definitely has some great moments and Witney did a lot of the work to preserve his back, but it just not all the way there. Often I feel like celebrities use/fake injuries to have a storyline on the show, but I have no doubt that Alfonso is actually in pain. Len says he did a good job, Julianne says he is a fighter, Bruno says his pain didn’t affect the dance and Carrie Ann says his posture was phenomenal.

Sadie (Argentine Tango)

In her package, she talks about being close to her family and her relationship with God. They were torn about whether to let her do the show or not and pleasantly surprised at how good she was and how she has handled being away from her family. Here legs are too long for the room and it makes some of the movements awkward, but a good night overall. That said, I love the arrangement that put on “Problem”. Len says she should be in the final, Julianne liked the use of the guitar, Bruno agrees with Len and Carrie Ann says she never lost the connection.

In his package, he talks about growing up poor and using humor to make people like him and keep him from getting beat up by other orphans. It is clear that he is a survivor and he has shown that throughout the competition. This is actually good! Not Tommy good, just good. Julianne says there was something magical about it, Bruno calls it their best performance, Carrie Ann says he is a master and Len says it was well done.

Bethany (Contemporary)

In her package, her family talks about her being shy and being bullied by someone close to her in the third grade. Through YouTube, she found her voice and confidence, and that has only increased through this competition. Derek is a genius choreographer. I know I say that every week, but it is always worth repeating and I’m always amazed by him. Bruno calls it a modern masterpiece, Carrie Ann didn’t want to blink, Len calls it a Picasso of a dance and Julianne says it was picture perfect.

In her package, her family talks about her always wanting to be a star and not initially finding success once she moved from Hawaii. She felt guilty because her family gave up a lot for her career and she wasn’t working. This is intense and in a good way. Carrie Ann had a problem with the lifts, Len says she is an incredible dancer, Julianne says she has a gift and Bruno love the fluidity in her shapes. He disagrees and thought the lifts were wonderful.

In his package, he talks about always wanting to be an entertainer and growing up as a kid in the business. A lot of his co-stars talk about him and it is clear that lovable personality that we see on screen is the same off screen. Len admires him for dancing through the pain, Julianne commends Witney for both routines, Bruno says they always read from the same page and Carrie Ann says they showed us a new side of himself.
