Daily Number’s Thread – 07/26/16

Today’s thread is brought to you by the numbers 9 and 15.8M.

I was wrong. Drake was toppled off the top of the Hot 100 this week. We have a new champ in Sia’s “Cheap Thrills” f. Sean Paul. This is actually Sia’s first time topping the chart where she is singing (her songs have topped the chart before – Rihanna’s “Diamonds”. Interestingly, “Cheap Thrills” was originally intended to be on Rihanna’s latest album “Anti”). It is Sean Paul’s 4th trip to the top. Sia is the first woman over 40 to top the chart since Madonna in 2000 (42, “Music”) and Cher in 1999 (52, “Believe”). “Cheap Thrills” becomes the first song to top the Hot 100 while not topping any of the main contributing charts (sales, radio, streams).

HDD report on the Spotify standings. Fifth Harmony’s “Work From Home” is 9th globally with 15,767,024 streams last week.

Billboard runs through some of the complicated rules of playing music and why The Donald was legally allowed to play Queen’s “We are the Champions”, but may not have got all the ducks in a row to play the Stones “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” (performance rights for songs pre-1972 fall into a legal grey zone). The Turtles have been creating legal precedent all over the country for pre-1972 songs and even grumbled about “Happy Together” being played at the RNC. They can’t sue this time though because the RNC paid for the mechanical (songwriting) royalties, but did not play the Turtle’s 1967 performance of the song (the RNC played a cover).

In sad news, Marni Nixon has died. Marni was the voice behind many of the most successful movie musicals of all time providing the female singing voices for the lead actresses in “West Side Story”, “The King and I” and “My Fair Lady”. She even provided some of the notes for Marilyn Monroe. Just like in the movie “Singing in the Rain” Marni was initially uncredited and movie moguls threatened her if she ever revealed the truth. It was Debra Kerr who let the cat out of the bag. Marni also didn’t receive royalties for her recordings of “King and I” (which was a big-seller), but tried to get ones for “West Side Story.” After much negotiation, Bernstein (songwriter) gave her a sliver of his royalty share.
