Crystal Bowersox joined Lee DeyWyze on the couch at the Ellen DeGeneres show. She says watching Lee take the crown was like winning vicariously. She also mentioned the breakup with her boyfriend Tony the morning of the final. Strong woman!

After, she sang a gorgeous rendition of “Up to the Mountain.” See it after the jump.

Yum. I loved that rendition. Loved Lee’s song also. Congratulations to both of them!

Up to the Moutain is such a great song, and Crystal sang it beautifully. I love her xD

And Lee is a cool guys as well. I hope both of their careers shine!

  • flicker

She sounds amazing. This is my favorite song that she did on the show.

On the itunes live feed, she has gone up to #6, and Lee’s Hallelujah to #11. Ellen bump, I guess.

*Edited to correct Lee’s number. They both went up one spot.

  • J9BT

Both Crystal and her voice are stunningly beautiful in this video! I am always amazed when I hear her sing. Thanks for posting, MJ!

i love this girl… ellen was right on ai… when she sings she just draws you into the song with her… absolutely stunning version!!!

like lees beautiful day on access hollywood.. but halleluah … to me can’t beat jasons beautiful version (of ai folk) kd lang did an awesome version at the olympics !!!!!

  • Refl

WOW, she would be a fun to watch live. It’s a different version from the AI Finale live and iTunes. She also got the louder/est cheer. Go Bowersox! I think the audience already forgot that Lee sang. Just saying.

On the itunes live feed, she has gone up to #6, and Lee’s Hallelujah to #7. Ellen bump, I guess.

I think so. I remember Matt Morris who was relatively unknown before his Ellen appearance, got his debut album to the top 10 chart right after his performance on the show. Check his album. It’s a great one.

  • rayni

So many times this season I have found myself liking these kids so much more in their ‘after’ interviews and Crystal is no exception. this speaks to a couple of things to me – (1) they were incredibly nervous/uptight while on the show and/or (2) the producers did a crappy job of letting us get to know them.

  • Marie Ruffin

she could be the next Carrie. Hmmm….that’s how many women in the 19 stable? 3: Carrie, Allison and Crystal.

  • catira

I think Crystal should have won still. Damn it…
Oh well.. She will do great things!

How in the hell is is it possible she didn’t win again? WTF? She’s in another league.

  • tierbee

That was gorgeous. And I like this top 2 traveling around together, lol, they are cute. Can’t wait to get my hands on her album. Please don’t Bo Bice her, TPTB, let her make music that fits her.

  • Ximena

i like her, believe me is just that i prefer when she sings more softly…its more beautiful! when she starts screaming, idk is not that good….but i still love his voice XD

I’m glad Crystal got to go on Ellen. I wonder if this is new because Ellen is a judge? As I recall Adam didn’t go on Ellen until much later as these talk shows are usually considered part of the winner’s package. I wonder if they are going to treat these two like co-winners?

I’m glad they both are getting some ITUNES love. :) I like thinking that Crystal is making some good money now that will help her and her family.

I’m not sure if they’ll get co-winner treatment, but given the overall less interest in this season, perhaps TPTB are saving on travel costs by combining appearances. I do remember Kris & Adam being together last year for some of the NYC morning show concerts/interviews – maybe not all of them, but at least some.

It seems to me that Crystal gives Lee a lot of support/encouragement, so maybe he needs her to be there to get him through all of the hoopla – LOL!

ITA, but honestly, I’m over it now. She has a contract, is touring and will be releasing an album – she is happy so I am happy!

  • songsungblue

She’s not screaming in the least. I’m completely confused how anyone could call that rendition “screaming.” For reals? That was astounding.

A standing O in the studio.

What so, so, so bugs me is that it would have been easy for Crystal to have completely smoked every single contestant on that stage for the win [I mean, she did. But still]. All she had to do was agree to “transform.” She could have wrapped up the dreads every week to be less visible. Have dental implants [those teeth are about diabetes and poverty. I know, hurts to see, don't it? The lack of care in this country?] She could have stood there, shy and unsure, while the judges insisted that she was worthy. She could have tried to lose weight, or styled herself more [although - this is laughable- she's not fat at all. I would gage her to be 120 pounds and 5'2. But we like our Barbies!]. But she would NOT do it. She’s strong, she’s confident, she’s powerful. She likes herself. And what I keep reading is that “she looked dirty.” Yes, Lee – it’s amazing!

*gnashes teeth* This strong and spirited woman represents so many wonderful things and no one can see past the fact that she hasn’t been tricked out to be media-gorgeous. I don’t see anyone suggesting that LEE lose some weight. No.

    ***end of rant***

  • J9BT

songsungblue – if Crystal had done all of those things, haters would have found something else to complain about! That’s part of the deal. There are Lee haters too. Unfortunately, it seems to be part of the IDOL process, and I’m sure all of the contestants are schooled about it.

Actually, Crystal had opportunities to have her teeth fixed for free (from what I remember one dentist took out an ad offering to do it?) but she has publicly stated she likes her teeth and won’t change them.

  • morrissey

Wow she’s got a really really powerful voice. I was never pissed at Crystal not winning, I’m happy that she got this far and she’s got a contract so for me it’s all good. She really is a strong woman, I think she’s gone through so much that’s why she may also seem a little guarded but she really has the uncanny ability to translate all her experiences and emotions to her performances and her music. I can’t wait for her album!

  • https://twitter.com/pmhowden undercooked

I have to agree with that. I don’t think we really had any physical transformations at all this year. I recall Cook’s haircut and sharper clothing. Allison had a nice transformation when she got those hair extensions. This year, they didn’t even shave Lee’s beard! I understand why Crystal resisted the makeover, (I think she is very pretty) but I know that some people like to see that.

ETA- Thank gawd Simon didn’t publically tell Crystal to lose some weight like he has with other female contestants in the past.

  • dishp

    Preach it, songsungblue!

I mean, thin about Janis Joplin. If she were around today, would we have ever heard her?

One thing I will say is that to my surprise the judges and producers pretty much let her be. Considering all the shit that Simon gave Allison last year for her attire, personality, etc., Crystal pretty much got to be Crystal, and I thank them for that.

It is weird to see peoples’ comments about Crystal focusing on teeth, dreadlocks, dirty hippie, etc., but perhaps not surprising because AI is a bit of beauty pageant and popularity contest as well as a singing competition. Maybe we should be grateful Crystal got as far as she did.

  • Marie Ruffin

Their duo-trips are more to advertise the tour than their upcoming albums or career moves. The tour is paramount now. They’ve got to sell tickets. Can you imagine Aaron or Mike going on the talk show to get people to buy tickets? I don’t think so.

  • jolie_05

WOW! She looks AHMAZING and sounded even more amazing! She’s going to be just fine! And now, we’ll wait in anticipation for her album!!!

  • MayMirabella

I think they were more nervous , controlled, or the producers did not show this side of them that we are seeing in the post interviews. So this is nice to see.

  • http://myspace.com/susanatfox sumidol

Crystal really is good and I am so mad at myself for not really paying attention much all season. Lee is the one who really needs the win, he isnt very good and without the win he probably wouldnt go very far but Crystal will be just fine because she is fantastic as I have just recently begun to see! Good for her

  • 1952

Also, don’t forget only 2% difference. Idol is probably hedging its bets.

  • wjmtv

They also have great chemistry together. That might have something to do with it.

  • http://idolforums.com/index.php?showtopic=561466&st=0 Preston

The guitar was a little too loud for my tastes at the beginning, but by the end… WOW. Helps to further solidify my belief that her performance of UTTM on the show was not only the best of the season, but one of the best Idol performances ever. I’m very, very eager to see what kind of album she puts out.

  • Ximena

Also, don’t forget only 2% difference. Idol is probably hedging its bets.

i’m not sure about that, because there wasn’t a 2% difference for the final voting, there was a 2% difference coming into the final performance meaning last week. WATCH AGAIN! sick of everybody misunderstanding ryan’s comment….

    lee won by a landslide!

but obviusly they need both to promote the tour, lee and crystal are the best in the season with siobhan ofcourse.

  • movin2thabeet

I think its likely that Crystal actually got more individuals to vote for her than Lee did. Its just that Lee had people (mostly of the female persuasion) churning out more votes. But individuals usually only buy 1 album for themselves, and then maybe others as gifts. Same goes for touring. I’ve heard reports that the audience at the Finale was louder for Crystal than Lee. Same thing seemed true here on Ellen’s show. So it makes sense, momentum-wise, to have them both appear together. Let’s face it, Lee isn’t the model of passion and excitement no matter how many times he uses the word ‘amazing’. And Crystal is a powerhouse. Considering the flagging interest in this season altogether, it makes sense to send them out as a pair. Try to keep the energy up, in hopes of selling the tour. I’m going to be very curious how they’re going to manage that. What if they’re not even selling half the venues even with the discount tickets. What will they do? Take a big loss, cancel venues with poor sales (horrible PR), or downsize venues (logistical nightmare)?

  • bootslacrosse

Crystal really looks happy and sounded amazing, even better than her Idol performance of Up To The Mountain. Looking forward to great things from her.

LOL at comments of Crystal providing support for nervous Lee. It might be true.

I actually think that Crystal changed a lot stylistically – her clothes, hair style (you can’t get rid of dreads since it’s a permanent hairstyle, but they did a lot of different things with her hair) and make-up. She wore sparkled gowns with her hair up in a bun, fake eyelashes, lots of eye make-up, high heels, etc. Much different than the jeans and shirts she started with. She certainly looks a lot more glamorous to me now.

We don’t really know if Lee won by a landslide. All we have to go by is DialIdol, and they said Lee creamed Crystal and Casey Top 3 week too, yet Wednesday we find out only 2% separated the top 2. That means DialIdol might not have been so accurate. That means the finale blowout they predicted might not have happened either. All we know is he won.

  • TwigLA

THat was incredible. Was there a guitar backing track? It sounded way to loud and didn’t match her playing.

Thanks for putting this up. It inspired/reminded me to go buy it and a few I missed.

The final two do the media tour together. In the past, Ellen only had the winner on immediately after the Finale starting (I think) in season 5. She had changed when they stop taping till after the Finale since she’s a fan. I think she probably had Crystal on with Lee because she’s a huge fan and supporter of her. I’m glad she did, and Crystal is great for making Lee comfortable. I’m glad they’re friends and have each other to lean on.

  • bmms

Yes, I just watched the finale again! And it is very clear that Ryan stated and I quote “Let me tell you how tight this race has been over the course of the season, Coming into the votes last night, less than 2% separated the finalists!” … Gasp, yes”… End quote.

So, Lee did not win by a landslide!!!!! It’s obvious you misunderstood Ryan’s comment. Watch again!!

  • HeyHoLetsGo

So begins the fan wars. Heh. “My idol won by a landslide!” “MY idol sold more!” “My idol is BETTER because he won!” To which I respond: Whatever.

In my opinion, anyone with a fully operational set of ears can appreciate Crystal’s amazing talent, and I’m sure by the time she records Holy Toledo and her other original music that will become a lot more clear. She is the rare AI contestant that other musicians took seriously. I think with her drive and her native intelligence [and God knows, she's a lot smarter than another contestant whose name rhymes with Smee], she’ll be able to carve out a wonderful career. The rest of it, I don’t care. I just think she’s a sad testament to the embracing of mediocre entertainment because it demands so little of the listener. But hey. See above.

LOL. I thought we were going to avoid the fanwars this season, but I guess it’s inevitable.

For me? I don’t care if Lee won by a trazillion-gazillion-to-the- power-of-infinity-and-beyond votes. If he did, good for him! How wonderful. However, I think Crystal is amazing. I LOVE her version of “Up to The Mountain” and cannot wait for her album release in November.

  • Nina1

I mean, thin about Janis Joplin. If she were around today, would we have ever heard her?

I’ve wondered about that, also. Janis was not beautiful, but not homely, either (a lot like Crystal), and we seem to need more than just music. It’s a shame.

  • HeyHoLetsGo

I think Janis was actually VERY homely, and Crystal is a natural beauty, but I agree with you. MTV definitely killed the radio star. :)

  • martha

Wow ! Crystal is beautiful inside and out and her vocal tones in every key are beautiful. She is a delightful personality too. I wish her much happiness, good health and success. I also have really liked Ellen as a judge this season.

  • martha

I had to rewatch again. Crystal is my personal season 9 american idol favorite. I think she is incredible in so many ways, and I will definitely support her career.

  • LaurelG

I think Janis was actually VERY homely, and Crystal is a natural beauty,

IA. I think Crystal is very pretty. And I wouldn’t care if she kept the hair, the clothes, the style, the weight, whatever. But if she changed her mind and decided to fix her teeth, I would be fine with that. She seems self-conscious about them and I noticed that when she apppeared on Ellen playing the No or Go game, she kept covering her mouth with her hand when she laughed. She said she’s embracing this life, and as a singer the cameras are always focused on the mouth. As someone else said, it could be from the diabetes and poverty. It’s an easy fix. Doesn’t mean she’s changing or going all glam.

  • alxsavage

Wow. What a gorgeous performance. I don’t think I had ever been this moved by someone’s vocals since Sarah McLachlan. I can’t ever hate on S9 again, it gave us Crystal, it was worth it. And what a pretty girl she is.

And, this is gonna sound cheesy, so I’ll just embrace it…Crystal and Lee are so damn cute together. And I don’t mean together in a romantic way. Just together. I was moved by Lee’s “I love you” to Crystal after he won, and now I’m touched by the story Ellen told.

They might even become my favorite runner-up/winner couple of all time.

  • oraclesandarchetypes

Did anyone read the critique of the AI Finale in today’s New York Times by Jon Caramanica? I think he really h it the nail on the head when he writes that the show has evolved (or devolved depending on your point of view) from a talent show to a make-over show. How else to explain Lee’s win? It also rankles me that pundits (as well as Simon et al ) held up Lee’s rather bland and uneventual life as a compelling narrative. What is so interesing about coming from a middle-class background (look at his parents) and working in a paint store! Jeeze. How can Crystal’s story be deemed not typically American? She was poor as a child, had an absentee mother (as far as I know), is raising a child on her own and suffers from a life threatening disease (Type l Diabetes is no joke). And she has shown nothing but grace and dignity despite her circumstances. She has not become bitter or cynical.Come on now. It appears that America fell, once again, for the unsophisticated kind of shy white male who women and culture in general just love to bring out of their shell. I hate to bring up the sexist card ,because it is so frequently abused, but I think that in this case it’s appropriate.

  • movin2thabeet

Thank you for your thoughts o-and-a, if I may be so bold to call you that. I agree with you completely.

  • SLR

I saw a recap on Fox News after the finale. The reporter said, I kinda liked Lee going in – I have to say -um- I am supposed to say, but in the end Crystal took the night. Proof to me that the show is most likely rigged!

  • mozart4898

Yeah, you know the biggest thing that bothers me is just how complacent people even on a blog are over the whole thing. “Oh well, so Lee won, but Crystal gets a contract anyways so it’s no big deal, even though yeah, she’s definitely better.” That’s the exact kind of apathy that pervades our society as a whole. I’m sorry, but I’ll bet if you look in a lot of other countries, you’ll find that part of why their education systems are surpassing ours is because they don’t allow that sort of thinking and attitude. They aren’t afraid to say “sorry, you’re just not good enough, this person is better.” Nowadays in a school it seems that a C is a bad grade – that teachers can’t use anything lower than that. (I actually know that’s pretty much true, my parents are both retired teachers and my mom especially, as an elementary school teacher, has said that they have to go through so much red tape to actually give a student a failing grade, that most teachers just won’t do it because if anything, it just comes back on them.) We as a society need to start actually recognizing things for what they are, and not just glossing over something so we don’t hurt someone’s feelings. It’s getting to the point where we don’t know good from bad when we see it, and leading too to just blaming problems on each other rather than fixing them – because no one seems to know how to deal with adversity any more. There’s always someone else to tell us what to do or not to do, and no one’s allowed to fail, so as a result, not just music, but our whole society has gotten soft. Blah.

NOW, I’m going to go watch the video since I hadn’t even watched yet – I came to this thread and read the comments and just get sick of “she’s so amazing, I can’t believe that Lee won over her but it’s ok, they’ll both have a great career.” No, it’s not ok. It’s just another example of how sick and messed up our society is. We don’t recognize and respect quality when we see it as a whole.

You know… (tinfoil hat alert), I now can think of at least two very specific instances of runners up saying that they “knew” the other would win. Clay said sometime after the final that he “saw the card” before the results were read, and knew Ruben would win. Crystal said after the finale that she just had a feeling Lee would win. As I recall, in the video from last season, it almost looked like Adam was ready to congratulate Kris before the result was even read. Makes me wonder…do the runners up know before the result is read? Does someone let them in on it beforehand? Not that it’s actually “rigged,” but still.

  • Dlynne

Crystal looks beautiful! She really is glowing. I think the transformation may be that she is healthier. In the beginning, she was ill and it showed. Anyway, it was an outstanding performance, too. I love the two of them together. I hope they duet again soon.

I think they might hear the same stuff and get the same vibes we do. Plus they are interacting with the producers and probably pick up on things that way. I do remember Diana DeGarmo saying she knew she’d lost when they ran through the order of the finale with her and she was scheduled to sing “I Believe,” the winners single, during the show and Fantasia wasn’t. She knew they wouldn’t have her sing it twice and that’s why she was so much more emotional while singing it on results night–because she knew she had lost.

  • HeyHoLetsGo

I feel your pain, Mozart [and I've written extensively on the insane idea that quality is entirely subjective - no it is not!] but when it comes down to it, of course AI isn’t fair. If it was fair everyone would be dressed in identical black robes, sing the same song with the same accompaniment, and the judges would be blindfolded. :) There’s no way to have a truly “fair” decision.

Crystal is a force of nature. To think of what she went through during those weeks – and I would say WITHOUT whining – I mean, diabetes, and boyfriend problems – to give her finest performances, well, that’s a star. SHE is what this show is about.

  • Mtlfan

i love Crystal!!! I’m glad she’s starting to dress less hippie and more hip with her leather jacket! She sounds great here!

  • Trillian

See my post on the Ellen show Lee performance – gah – Crystal is so amazing! I thought she was great every week and this just proves it. So sad. I truly believe the judges manipulated her out of a win.

I’m not sure if this is every year, I have noticed that when they are going to give the final result, the winner is standing closest to Ryan. So this might be a clue.

My real tin foil hat theory is that sometimes I wonder if the person wants more freedom for their cd, so they give them second place. Or maybe even 4th place, like with Daughtry. I think most likely this isn’t true but it is something I think about sometimes. I realize that there are other reasons. It’s more likely, especially for Adam and Crystal, they were so relaxed because it was a win-win situation for them. Come in second and have more freedom, or come in first and be the winner. Thought I’m sure that Lee and Kris would have been perfectly fine with second place also.

  • sue

Chills….wow…that was beautiful. Crystal does have one of the BEST voices ever to grace idol. Too bad she was in a season of so many lackluster contestants. She really can SANG!

OMG, its just a tv show!

Yes, it is just a TV show. But it just perpetuates (or puts on display) many of the attitudes that have begun holding us back as a society/country. Mediocre is ok, looks can count for more than ability, and it’s fine to manipulate people just for the fun of it or to get the result that you want. The concept of the TV show is great. And if it wasn’t for how blatantly obvious some of the prejudices and problems in this country are, it wouldn’t bother me like it does. It doesn’t help matters for me either that I’m a classically trained musician and I still rankle at the idea of someone with lesser skills winning a competition that, at its heart, is about finding the best. People even say Lee wasn’t the best, but they still voted for him.

  • Dlynne

I think the kind of music someone likes is very subjective. People like different kinds of music and there is nothing wrong with that. Otherwise, there wouldn’t be the need for different artists and genres of music. Someone can think a singer is very good but not like the style of music they do.

I think for someone to really like an artist, it’s a combination of liking their voice and their style of music. And as I said, this is very subjective. So I think if someone likes a singer I don’t like, I don’t think it should be a big deal.

There’s nothing wrong one way or the other about liking a singer or not liking a singer.

Mediocre is ok, looks can count for more than ability, and it’s fine to manipulate people just for the fun of it or to get the result that you want.

This might be true in the entertainment industry (I really don’t know), but it’s certainly not the status quo in many career fields.

I agree, this is a t.v. show, it is cast, and it would be silly to think it is based 100% on talent, because talent is subjective. The other thing I’ve realized, is that you can have the most amazing vocalist, but not every talent becomes famous or appeals to the masses. You only have to look to your community to see amazingly talented singers who aren’t famous.

Seems to me it happens all the time. And I’m not a feminist or anything (I still find it weird that there are guys who actually are, but then I will stick up for the rights of anyone), but it seems that these sorts of standards are still more frequently applied to women. Sometimes I really think it’s even subconsciously, but it still happens. I’d say almost half of the negative things I read about Crystal weren’t about her singing, they were “damn girl, get rid of the nasty dreads, fix your teeth, take out the piercing, and cover up those tattoos, no one wants to see that shit.” You know, when I listen to her, I don’t hear any of those things.

Heck I work in the restaurant business. Look around at the restaurants you go to. How often is the host/hostess overweight, has a bad complexion, etc? They portray an image, that of the business, but it’s not just about how they take care of themselves, it also ends up including factors that they have no control over. Someone could be the kindest, most polite, and most organized person there is, and yet…it seems that the cute girl always ends up being the one to greet you at the door to the restaurant. And quite often, it’s a cute rude snobby one too. Because looks mean a heck of a lot more than people acknowledge that they do. How many secretaries or receptionists are balding middle-aged men? How many of them are late 20s/early 30s, beautiful women? It goes on and on from there. I know. I’m getting too deep for a “teevee program” but like I said, when you get down to it, it really does get to some of the things that are wrong today, plain and simple.

Adam has said that he knew Kris would win because Danny’s votes would go to Kris. I think that Crystal might have been in the same position because Casey’s votes would go to Lee or not vote.

I agree. For the most part, Idol voters pick who to support based on their taste in music and who they like.

The only exception that I know of is the Adam-Kris final. This is the only time that I know of where there were organized campaigns to vote against someone because of who they were. In Adam’s case, the “vote against the gay, non-believer” campaigns may or may not have effected the vote, but IMO were wrong. Kris even commented that he did not want these votes which was a courageous thing to do.

In this year’s vote, I am unaware of any similar movement. People once again voted for the Idol that they liked. And I may not like this year’s outcome, but at least it was based on the individual NOT based on someone’s sexual orientation and religion.

How were all of the people that I heard of who said they wouldn’t vote for Crystal because of her dreads, her teeth, the tattoos, etc, and instead would vote for Lee even though Crystal has a better voice, NOT voting against someone? I saw phrases like “great voice, but I can’t stand to look at her so I’m voting for Lee” so many times.
