My sincerest apologies to David Bendeth for all the shit I gave him after hearing the abominable pre-mix demos. He did Mama justice. This needs to be the first single; it’s way, way too powerful to hold down.

    Awesome. Simply awesome.

  • leome

    Who still uses Myspace?!

This version is better. But which one will be in the album?
(in parts it still sounds like the other version… mmm… I need to find the other one again).

  • springboard

Isn’t it the same as the pre-idol version?

  • songsungblue

OMG. This is an amazing mix! It preserves the anger behind the song, doesn’t sound country, gives her a boost of clarity – I LOVE IT!

I’m afraid to have hopes for her album. I’ve been let down before but…this is off the grid, out of the Idol bubble good.

  • springboard

Listened again to the old version. The mix is different in this one, more elaborate, and I have to say very good, just right.

  • http://twitter.com/kenostroff negativo

    Home-fucking-run.

Stayed true to the acoustic version with just a slight hint of production mix. Absolutely nailed it. If the rest of the album follows the lead of FD, this record might go triple platinum. Can’t wait for the tour.

  • ScorpioBSB

Wow, haven’t posted here in long while! I love the song, and love the emotion in the song but it really sounds like country to me. Funny how each person who listens to a song interprets what they hear differently.

  • tinawina

Much better. Me likes. He toned down the cheesy background singers.

I don’t think its a single, but its a great song. Kudos.

  • bootslacrosse

I like this version much better than the initial mix. Still not a fan of the background singers in it. Add a little slide guitar flourishes and this is a country song, dad-gummit. I hope Crystal is proud that she has some of her original songs on the album. I am looking forward to hearing what was done with Holy Toledo.

    Seriously? My Space? LOL

I wonder if this will be an additional downloadable track. I remember she said that the album was going to have “clean” versions but the other version would be available in some way. Maybe the first one will be on the hard copy cd and this one as a bonus download?

Why? There is cursing in music all the time. Its not a radio track anyway. Or did she state that it was going to be changed?

    ETA: Thanks CindyM

  • Eriko

I listened through my very good home stereo, wow, almost like she was in the room. You could even hear her breath, simply gorgeous. Now why on earth, did they leak a totally unfinished mix to Hitpredictor!!!??? Hopefully no harm done besides the minor heart attacks some of us had. And please people, don´t listen through some crummy computer speakers if you want a real experience :)

  • Inconnu

If this is the version going on the album, this is EXCELLENT.
They left the ‘fucking sick and tired’.

I have high hopes for her album now. What a roller-coaster ride us fans have had this week.

According to all accounts from those who are in the know, including her Village Idiots fan site, this is indeed the fuckin’ final version.

BTW, a big hat tip should also go out to Crystal’s husband Brian Walker for staying behind with Brendeth making sure everything sounded right on the final mix after Crystal returned from recording.

This sounds more like the Crystal I have grown to luv! You can’t even tell she was on AI….

  • chearts77

LOVE IT!!!! Yes, this could cross over right into country.

  • popeye

Meh, just don’t like her style of song writing…she sounds better singing covers…hope there are others songs on her album. Can’t hear this on the radio at all.

  • tinawina

I know it will never happen but I wish they would just release Farmers Daughter (or something else she wrote) to AAA. Just put all their effort into breaking her there, and maybe getting some HAC crossover, because that really is where she’s supposed to be. I know it won’t generate enough sales and they probably won’t be open to an Idol, but having this girl of all people lead off with something she didn’t write is so ass-backward to me. Even of you get her a pop/HAC hit it’s not like that’s going to be her long term home. Ah well. A girl can dream impractical dreams….

  • Eriko

hope there are others songs on her album

No worries, there are 11 other songs :)

  • Eriko

I know it will never happen but I wish they would just release Farmers Daughter (or something else she wrote) to AAA.

Words of wisdom and just plain common sense. Don´t AAA stations play songs of their own choosing from albums?

  • istersay

Love this version, I hope they have switched the single to FD, but either way I know I will love this album

  • windmills

Ahhhh definitely much better than the Promosquad one. I agree with bootslacrosse about the background singers and I’m not crazy about the drums either. The live version will always be better because it’s more raw. But this is good. I wish HAC would play it. Maybe I’m crazy but I think they might just because of how real it is.

  • tinawina

Words of wisdom and just plain common sense. Don´t AAA stations play songs of their own choosing from albums?

I think they do both. Single and album cuts. Its a quirky format.

Do you think she might have a song or two that could fit on Alternative Rock radio? They do play singer/songwriter/folky types sometimes, but I don’t know if Farmers Daughter is the type of song that would make it there.

Hold On may not come out badly, but I do worry a little that releasing that first will make it harder to crack the formats where she really belongs, given who wrote it. I don’t know if that is a justified worry.

  • spencer

Boring – couldn’t even listen to the whole thing – hope she has better stuff on her album.

  • songsungblue

I can’t wait for Mozart to hear this one :)

FYI – it’s not that weird for her to use myspace music. That’s really how myspace has stayed valid, and a lot of musicians use it for downloads. It’s a better tool than FB – you can apparently get better audio quality.

I still don’t think it sounds Country, I think that’s where a lot of singer-songwriter stuff has ended up that’s not really urban.

  • Eriko

Do you think she might have a song or two that could fit on Alternative Rock radio?

Since I don´t live in the States, I´m not familiar with the radio stations. But I have a feeling that the Buffalo Springfield, “For What It’s Worth” cover will be fantastic and played a lot, just don´t know which radio stations

  • dana80

I don’t follow Crystal or anything but this is a really good song.

  • abbysee

hope there are others songs on her album.

Nope, just like all other idol cds, only one song. LOL!

All kidding aside, this is some good shit. Too bad radio won’t play such a damn good song.

  • fuzzywuzzy

This is a rendition between her live version and the rough mix that was released earlier. Very nice!

  • kmd

It is good that Crystal’s fans seem to like the song. I don’t follow her. The problem is radio will not play it. Her label won’t help her out either.

  • girlygirl

Much better than the overproduced version we heard a few days ago. A little too repetitive in terms of the melody, but still, this is a very solid song. If they released it as a single I could totally see it doing well on country and Hot AC. It isn’t likely to ever see the light of day on any CHR station, though.

And they would simply do a radio edit to remove the “fuck” — that’s what other artists do — do a radio edit to bleep out or change the phrase

  • Eriko

Much better than the overproduced version we heard a few days ago

The other “version” wasn´t over produced, it simply had not been produced at the time. How and why it got out there, I don´t understand.

And they would simply do a radio edit to remove the “fuck” — that’s what other artists do — do a radio edit to bleep out or change the phrase

The other version will have “sick´n tired” instead of “fucking”, it sounds ok like that to me. Much better than a bleep.

  • neartist

My sincerest apologies to David Bendeth

LOL That was my first thought when hearing it!

So glad to hear this! Makes me excited for her CD again!

  • HermeticallySealed

It’s a good song, and I can see it doing okay on country. Not too sure about crossover potential on HAC or AAA, though. Maybe in areas more inclined towards country tinged rock/soft rock.

  • ComeBack2Me

    Nice song!

  • Chicagolaw

I LOVE this! This should be the version on her album. Love it!

Having said that, I don’t know that it fits even HAC. But, it could kill on Country (I think?) And, it is SO meant for Alternative radio, if only they would play it. I would love for Crystal to be the Idol alum to finally break through on AAA.

This will be a good album, but I hope Jive knows what to do with it. I always felt like Jive was a terrible fit for Crystal. I hope they prove me wrong.

  • Q3

YES! This should be the single. Jive just have some guts and do it. This is the Crystal that should be heard.

I hope to God that they decided to put HO back in the can and release this instead.

And if it is the single, they will just release an explicit track and a radio edit. The CD might have the “clean” version. But there will at least be and explicit iTunes version.

This will be a good album, but I hope Jive knows what to do with it. I always felt like Jive was a terrible fit for Crystal. I hope they prove me wrong.

I have thought the same thing — and I hope I am completely wrong. Hopefully Jive can recognize what they have and promote her properly.

I never once really liked Crystal on AI. But I am ready right now to sit and listen to FD for an hour straight.

I will buy this album for my husband (who loved her) and I can see that I will at least enjoy one song on it myself. WOW. That girl can WRITE.

  • Nina1

  • Eriko

    Wow! Angry!

Actually, in the first minute or so, she sounds sad and broken to me, which touched me differently than before. And her voice during those softer parts, so clear and vulnerable…really touching

I can’t wait for Mozart to hear this one

I saw this thread earlier on my phone but couldn’t get into the thread to read comments let alone go to hear the song.

Oh man. I couldn’t have hoped for better. This is really just about exactly how I “heard” her originals in their final form, from listening to the demos. I truly was nearly sick with what I’d heard with the non-produced rough version of the song. This sounds so, so good – even knowing how much can be done in production, it’s still hard to believe that this is the result of the rough mix we heard a few days back.

Makes me even more impatient to see what songs like Speak Now, Riding with the Radio, and On the Run will sound like. Heck, just go ahead and say I can’t wait to hear the whole album. Turns out I think Bendeth really DOES get what she’s all about and if this is any indication, he’s going to do a pretty damn good job of putting the best of Crystal out there. All I think any of us could hope was that her music would end up sounding like this, and her success would come down to the merits of her own talent. I’m pretty sure this will satisfy almost everyone that was already a fan – and I’m betting a good many that weren’t already, who hadn’t ever heard her or her originals, will be new fans.

If the rest of the album follows the lead of FD, this record might go triple platinum. Can’t wait for the tour.

If it does, we’ll be seeing Crystal on awards shows next year – and not just there watching. I’m still holding to what I’d predicted a while back (500K to 1 million by Mother’s Day, so at least gold by then). I’ve thought all along Crystal might have the potential that you’re saying, but I just don’t know with the music industry as it apparently is if she’ll get to that. 10-15 years ago, I would have said without question. We’ll see. Regardless I think she’s going to end up doing just fine.

  • mozart4898

Do you think she might have a song or two that could fit on Alternative Rock radio? They do play singer/songwriter/folky types sometimes, but I don’t know if Farmers Daughter is the type of song that would make it there.

Depending on the production and instrumentation, I could see On the Run fitting in there. Sandman might have as well. Actually it remains to be seen how Riding with the Radio will turn out – the lyrics themselves are almost a bit of a FU to the mainstream radio/music industry, so if the production fits, that song might even have a chance. I think a lot depends on what sort of buzz there is when her album actually gets to reviewers and when it first goes on sale. If there’s a ton of initial acclaim, Jive might consider trying to push it a bit more. My guess is at this point, they’ve basically just let her and Bendeth put together what they want, with input on a couple of potential singles (like Hold On) that they could release to at least give it minimal promotion. Their thought is probably that if she then takes off, they might just ride the wave wherever it might take them.

In other words, they more or less just left her to her own devices beyond ensuring they’d get at least one single out of her that they could promote to the usual HAC format…as some of us were wishing they’d do.

Because of the challenges of getting radio play, I’m hoping for what Tina just stated. I wonder if Jive will push to promote it. I love this version. I love how her first opening verse is just her and her guitar, much like her original acoustic version.

Wouldn’t it be amazing to hear her sing FD live at the Grammy’s (*sigh*)

ETA: I’m no country music expert — but I could see some country singers wanting to cover FD.

Well the question is, will this even end up being a single at any point? Or are you saying, will they push to promote the album at all? See my thought is, if reviewers give it good reviews, and if VH1 and MTV are apparently interested in her…will Jive have to push it anyways, or will people just hear about it? There’s 300 million people in the USA, is it that hard to believe that 500K of them might buy an album just because it sounds like it’s really good as opposed to it being a result of label promotion?

(And just remember, negativo said triple platinum, why didn’t anyone question him? ;-) )

Honestly to my ear I could hear Crystal getting country airplay with this. The only problem is that, like people have said before, it doesn’t seem that people tend to cross over from other genres to country…it works the other way (country to pop, in other words). The sound is very country – as I feel most of the album will be. Her songwriting style lends itself to that – with the storytelling nature.

  • oza902

This version is much better than the rough cut. It still lacks an emotional oomph.. but I’ll take this version.. second to the acoustic of course.

Mozart, I think you’re right (from what little I know) that country music tunes can cross over, but not vice versa. For example, I’m not a big country music fan, but I watched some of the CMA’s on Wednesday. I was blown away by Kelly Clarkson’s duet with Jason Aldean, ‘Don’t You Wanna Stay’ — her vocals live were so amazing, I went to Youtube to listen to it over and over. From what I’ve heard, this song will be a cross over hit. I do plan to download DYWTS.

Crystal is not really country, not really adult contemporary and not really pop…she’s an acoustic folk rock artist, and I can see her measuring up to the great ones of the past.

Having grown up in the 70′s, the golden age of acoustic folk rock, I find Crystal stylistically very similar to Joni Mitchell, Harry Chapin, Gordon Lightfoot, James Taylor, Carol King and Jim Croce. When you think about it, in many ways Farmer’s Daughter is to the 10′s what Cats In The Cradle was to the 70′s.

What always has sold, and always will sell regardless of era, is talent combined with authenticity. I suspect Crystal will hit the charts hard and stay there long, because her music is timeless and crosses over many different demographics.

I am so pleased how things are working out. I was worried, but I think the producers are doing an excellent job of keeping Crystals sound while making it a little more radio friendly. I LOVE the album cover, and I even like the Kara song!!

To be honest, I felt Holy Toledo and FD needed punching up and were a little monotonous. But I strongly hope they leave On the Run alone. It’s perfect the way it is.

FD is such a raw, tough song — I’m glad Crystal and her mom have come to terms now (at least, according to Crystal). I think it would be otherwise difficult for Crystal to sing FD to a much wider audience.

Crystal wasn’t really ‘it’ for me during the season. I discovered her towards the end when I started listening to her original songs.

I was not a fan either, but after listening to that production and mix, that song and all the elements completely blew me away. I honestly have no clue how they will market her, or who the hell will play her on the radio, but to be honest who cares.

I hate half the shit on the radio and most new artists cant sing 2 notes in tune anyways. Crystal is a true artist, let’s hope the market still appreciates talent. Unfortunately this one could take a really long time to break. That HAC game takes months to get anywhere.

A big part of the reason I quit listening to HAC/CHR stations in the late 90s was because most of the music they were playing was just…ugh. I tend to listen mostly to rock radio when I actually do listen to the radio (just recently figured out the station I listen to most is officially considered “active rock”), mainly because at least most of the music on that station isn’t manufactured crap. That doesn’t mean that it’s the best stuff there is, because you hear plenty of the Nickelback sorts, but at least you don’t hear autotuning on every song, and most of the bands/singers still do put passion into their music rather than it seeming totally mechanical. When I first heard Crystal I don’t think it was the voice, the style of music, anything like that – I think it was the passion she put into the music that did it for me. In the end, if the artist feels it and can capture and create that feeling for listeners, I don’t care what the genre is. Probably why I’ll listen to Crystal, many of the classic rock bands, Eminem, jazz and big band music, classical music…it’s not the specific genre, it’s the ability of the artist or music to “reach” me.

  • mozart4898

I really wonder if they’re getting ready to break the news that Farmer’s Daughter will be the lead single. I gotta say, I was listening to it again…thinking about it being the first time she goes on Letterman. Crystal, Frankie May, her drummer, Paul Schaffer playing the keyboards, the whole bit. I have a feeling that she’d be a huge hit on there with this song. On the other hand I don’t know if Hold On would have the same impact – I think she’d sound good and all but I have a feeling that if they change the single to this and she goes on the late night shows performing this, we’re going to see just how many people out there really are starving to hear a true authentic musician doing their own material.

Come on Jive…just do it. You’ve gone this far by letting Crystal have so many originals on her album, and apparently you’re not going to crap all over her style – give her the lead single she really should have, and see what kind of artist you really have on your hands when the world hears her completely on her own terms. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

  • iluvai

Crystal wasn’t really ‘it’ for me during the season. I discovered her towards the end when I started listening to her original songs.

I hope they market her right but it sounds really promising hearing FD being produced that way. I’m all excited now.

yeah, I feel like a jerk for being kind of down on her. But she is definitely, amazingly talented! Plus I’m a fan of single moms so I don’t get why hornets got in my pants about her. She’s really great. :)

  • Q3

I love this song in this version. And it makes me optimistic that the album may be a really good album.

As far as market — just seems to me that she might appeal most to the same people who buy Jack Johnson albums — AAA Rock – occasional Pop crossover songs. And he managed to release a rock album in 2010 that went gold.

Granted anything is possible in the music business — but Crystal selling 1 million units by Mother’s day seems like a real stretch to me. Only 5 albums sold 1 million units in the first half of last year; 13 others were over 500,000. 2 were Bieber albums. 1 was a compilation. None were rock albums. And every artist on this list had significant radio presence except SuBo — and that was/is an anomaly.

    Top-sellers between Jan. 1 – July 4, 2010:

01 Lady Antebellum, Need You Now (2,355,000)
    02 Justin Bieber, My World 2.0 (1,387,000)
03 Sade, Soldier of Love (1,213,000)
04 Lady Gaga, The Fame (1,151,000)
    05 Eminem, Recovery (1,058,000)

06 Usher, Raymond Vs. Raymond (898,000)
    07 Black Eyed Peas, The E.N.D. (853,000)
    08 Ke$ha, Animal (813,000)
09 Justin Bieber, My World (710,000)
10 Drake, Thank Me Later (709,000)

    11 Susan Boyle, I Dreamed a Dream (665,000)
    12 Lil Wayne, Rebirth (617,000)
13 Zac Brown Band, Foundation (616,000)
14 Lady Gaga, The Fame Monster (603,000)
    15 Various Artists, Now 33 (599,000)

    16 Taylor Swift, Fearless (587,000)
17 Alicia Keys, The Element of Freedom (575,000)
18 Michael Buble, Crazy Love (508,000)

I think it is easy to forget how hard it is to sell albums now. I am rooting for her to sell a ton of albums, but I expect her sales to be more modest but steady and to build over time. Talent doesn’t usually get you instant huge sales but it is required for longevity. And if she can have a 20 year career as a singer-songwriter that IMO is far better than an typical Idol big first album than quickly fade away.

Well, not to get into an argument about sales (and I’m really not trying to make it one, just pointing this out), the list of those sales was starting Jan. 1st. From what people have said before, the first week’s sales are usually nothing to sneeze at, and Crystal’s first week and a half of sales will be just before Christmas (IMO, dropping your album not quite 2 weeks before Christmas is damn near the perfect time…getting near the end of shopping season and physical CDs are generally not much more than $10 if that much, making them a great last minute pickup for someone). I wouldn’t be surprised if she hits 2011 having sold 150K+, maybe more. If she does that and manages 350K more in the next 5 months (probably with an appearance during S10 in there as well), she’s at that 500K mark. I actually consider 18 albums having sold gold or better in that 6 month period to be a pretty good sign – I thought that was one of the worst times of the year for music sales typically. And many of her core fanbase are still the types, I believe, to buy albums instead of singles from iTunes – most of those on that list are people I would actually have expected would have been big single sellers (the country acts, Susan Boyle, and Now 33 being the ones I would have seen more as album sellers).

Regardless, even if she doesn’t make that level of sales, it’s sounding more and more likely that her album will be a pretty good representation of her, and I think for most of us here that’s the biggest thing we want to see for her. It’s then just a matter of whether her style actually connects with as many people as some of us believe it will. One thing’s for sure – if FD is any indication, the production and overall “sound” of her album is not going to be typical AI fare, with perhaps the exception of a couple tracks. Even those will have a common thread with the rest of her album through her voice and the one producer.

I don’t have enough words to describe the relief when I heard the final version. I am so relieved and happy right now like most mamasox fans out there :). Heck Il even say this, I am really looking forward to hearing THIS version being performed LIVE, I think it would be one hell of a kickass intro on her tour! This one has preserved the raw, emotions of Crystals stripped down acoustic version while at the same time adding instruments to bring out an edgier folk rock vibe (sorry but I don’t hear anything country about it).

Jive please jus get your heads out of your asses and release FD as her first single. They still haven’t released HO for the VH1 performances (my assumption is that the song doesn’t even remotely match up to the other 3 performances, FD, RWTR and Jolene) and now Crystal is already talking about a video for FD. Please just do the right thing and appreciate what you got and what HER target audience would want *sigh. I dont mind LWCA on the album, its got a folky and down earth vibe (Love the simplistic arrangement, the chorus clapping part especially which is very modern-hippie like Crystal to me). Please pleeeeeease dont ruin it for such a highly anticipated album by her fans and music lovers in general. Believe me you will get a crap load of shit and complaining if you go on being the assholes that previous fans have labelled you for (and rightfully so).

  • Q3

    mozart4898:

I wasn’t trying to say anything more than selling even 500K albums today is hard — and 18 albums, 15 artists, selling more than 500K units in the first half of the year is the all time low. Q3 2010 was also an all time low for recorded music sales in the US (Soundscan era – since 1991).

Crystal has the advantage of coming off of Idol and having a lot of Idol fans — plus even more casual Idol fans who will consider her album and buy it if they like it. But this has been a surprisingly tough holiday sales season for many artists.

First week’s sales for Idol alums are often 25% of their total sales. But there are no guarantees.

First week’s US sales and total US sales for Idol #2 finishers’ debuts

Justin Guarini, “Justin Guarini,” 57,000 Total 143K
Clay Aiken, “Measure of a Man,” 613,000 Total 2.8 million
Diana DeGarmo, “Blue Skies,” 47,000 Total 168K
Bo Bice, “The Real Thing,” 227,000 Total 672K
Katharine McPhee, “Katharine McPhee,” 116,000 Total 422K
Blake Lewis, “ADD,” 97,500 Total 318K
David Archuleta, “David Archuleta,” 183,000 Total 758K
Adam Lambert, “For Your Entertainment,” 198,000 Total 752K

Jive Idol artists have had mixed sales results:

    David Archuleta AI7 #2 – 183,000 Total 758K
    Jordin Sparks AI6 Winner – 119,000 Total 1 million
    Kris Allen AI8 Winner – 80,000 Total 318K
    Allison Iraheta AI8 #4 – 32,000 Total 103K

    Jive Follow-up albums:
Jordin Sparks “Battlefield” 48,000 Total 172K
David Archuleta “OSOD” 24,000 Total 37K

With her album releasing is about 4 weeks, no single released to radio, and no strong pre-sale push, I would expect first week sales to be less than Kris but significantly more than Allison. If she comes in >80K it is a great sign that she will have a really strong selling album. And if she sells more than 125K then she will prob pass 500K by May.

I think it all depends on what happens in the next 3 weeks.

Regardless, even if she doesn’t make that level of sales, it’s sounding more and more likely that her album will be a pretty good representation of her, and I think for most of us here that’s the biggest thing we want to see for her.

I want Crystal to be proud of her album and to be able to say it represents who she is as an artist. I also want her to build a solid foundation for a long-term career. I do not want to see her become this year’s star from Idol and vanish tomorrow. She is too talented for that. And she doesn’t need to sell 500K by May to have longevity — she needs to get good reviews, sell about 300K units in the first few months and be exposed to a broad audience. If the stars align — her album will sell for a year or more. And be the first of many great albums.

Finally, I loved her voice the first time I heard her on Idol. I really enjoyed her pre-Idol songs. But she really won me over with the way she has stood up for herself as an artist.

  • http://www.twilightslo.com Mateja

FD is a good song, but I don’t think it’s a single material. I still prefer Hold On for a single.

    Q3:
Finally, I loved her voice the first time I heard her on Idol. I really enjoyed her pre-Idol songs. But she really won me over with the way she has stood up for herself as an artist.

Well said. I have nothing but utmost respect for people who stand up for what they believe in. Crystal is a fine example of that and its a very admirable quality in a person.

Btw where do you get your stats from? Can you give me a link?

FD kinda reminds me of ‘You Outta Know’ by Alanis Morisette. When it was first released, I was completely blown away, not by the melody or because I like that genre but by the honest to truth lyrics in it and how Alanis sang it. I think a lot of guys were into it even though a lot of the lyrics were about man-hating and the constant reminder tt we are assholes lol. Not only that song but almost all the songs in that album had that same vibe and IMHO that album was a Masterpiece (RS gave it #327 on its 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, and I saw one Billboard Chart on VH1 giving it even no.1 spot). True story- I was in school that time and one of my friends asked the English teacher what was the meaning of the term ‘Ironic’ cos we had an essay topic abt it and he said to go and listen to Ironic by AM :). Afterwards he became the coolest teacher in the school lol (and he was pretty darn old)

So ok back to the point- I see the honesty and truth in Crystals music same way as I see them on songs on JLP and in my mind such raw, brilliant lyrics and melody are not limited to any particular genre (Alanis and Crystal are very different artists) and it will stand the test of time. So I wanna say I wont be surprised if they re-released her album 10 years from now, on its tenth year anniversary :D. Maybe an acoustic/stripped down version for the die hard fans, wouldnt that be just lovely ;)?

  • LVD

Do you think she might have a song or two that could fit on Alternative Rock radio? They do play singer/songwriter/folky types sometimes, but I don’t know if Farmers Daughter is the type of song that would make it there.

Crystal will not get played on alternative rock stations, her style isn’t up to date, perhaps 20 years ago but not today. In fact the song sounds very country. But Crystal sounds good and it is a great song.

  • Caffiend

Just listened to that song twice, which I am rarely compelled to do. I think this song will be an attention-getter and definitely should get some country airplay. Good job, Crystal. I wasn’t a big fan on the show but she is coming out swinging with this song.

  • luly

Nice song, powerful. It’s interesting that they are filming a video for this, if it is the first single- I wonder to which format they will aim it.

I don’t know how much she will sell(talent doesn’t guarantee big sales. And even a good album is not a guarantee of good sales), but without a song on radio and in the current sales market- she would need a lot of promotion before the album drop in order to have a good opening week. It will be interesting to see how Jive will promote her. Releasing in December instead of November can cause her some possibility significant lost of sales, but if her album will have longevity in the long run it might be not that significant.

  • Eriko

Videoing Farmer´s Daughter would IMO, be a directors dream. How often do they get material that offers as much drama and substance? Drunk mother, child being beat, door being hit with a head etc. Done correctly, one powerful video that would be noticed. So, if music video´s are one of the stronger promotional tools out there, that alone, is a good reason for releasing FD as a single.

I also see FD being used in a film that has anything to do with problematic families, and there are enough of them being filmed.

  • Q3

IMO this only sounds vaguely country because the roots of Folk-Rock and Country music are the same. But it is mostly because of the instrumentation — not the vocals and not the artist. Crystal is more likely to be accepted by AAA stations than Country stations.

Crystal is doing a radio promotion with an independently-owned AAA radio station in San Diego. So there is a least some attention to at least one Alternative Rock/AAA station.

The inclusion of a 60′s antiwar/antiestablishment song cover (FWIW), booking a promo concert at KPRi 102.1 San Diego with The Doobie Brothers and Shawn Mullins, and the folk-rock genre — just makes me think they will be doing something different with Crystal’s promotion. They could try to market her to older CD buyers who were fans of folk-rock in the 60′s and 70′s and to the college market. That would say TV, VH1 and festivals to me. Aligns with the Idol audience age 47 years old last season. Source: Nielsen ratings.

Honestly, from the outside it looks like Jive doesn’t have a tight plan for marketing Crystal. It looks like they planned to release HO as the lead single and may have changed to FD. If FD is the lead single — then it would change the plan regarding radio promo.

FD could appeal to HAC/AC program directors — because these stations target women 25 to 50 and this song seems like a good fit for that market. Also HAC/AC stations have a lot of Idol viewers in their audiences. This seems like a more likely fits than AAA.

FD doesn’t seem likely to get much Mainstream Pop (CHR) airplay because the target market is 12-35 year olds. But “Fireflies” was a #1 song and that has nothing to do with most of what is on Pop radio. A few other songs have done well on Pop recently by crossing over from HAC — September, Misery, and so on. If Misery can cross over this might. CHR stations will play alt. rock if they are hits on HAC, they will play country-cross over songs, it is possible some Pop stations will play FD if it is proven on HAC.

ETA: The Idol sales numbers I posted are from a few places — USA Idol Chatter has most of the past 4 years — from Soundscan. Most of the other sales numbers are from Billboard. And, if almost every number you want about the past 4 years of Idol is also in MJs archives.

    Lot of wishful thinkers here.

Btw do you know that Crystal played for a radio station with Michael Franti while she was doing the PTTP? Which format does this station belong to? The station is Alice 97.3 in San Francisco. Also is there a link to the radio formats and radio stations in the states?

  • shlitzy

Fact is Jive has no plan, they know Crystal should make a video, but who the hell watches VH1 for music anymore? I think it is a waste of money for something wedged between two reality shows.
As far as FD, I hope Myspace in no true indication of her fanbase which has under 2000 plays on Myspace at press time. I am surprised they did not go to itunes.
I can now see why they played this song early in research unfinished to get a reaction from people, even though it was a mess. They must have been desperate.
Only way to really sell records here is through touring and TV, There is no way to depend on radio and video for artists like this. Look at Wilco, Ray Lamontagne, and Melissa Etheridge here. Crystal needed a song like rehab Amy Winehouse style. She needed a smash hit to reach the general public. Most people in America hardly watch AI anymore and at this point in time she might have to be discovered as a “normal” new artist making her way.
Jive is not the “go to” label for this music, but they outsource it and give it to the experts who know how to break artists that are not radio driven.
Touring is the way here, all the other normal channels is a wash. Unless of course Country radio picks up the record, which is a long shot.

Well you can blame that on Jive and their brilliant marketing team. There is no indication of her streamed audio on her website or facebook page…and myspace is pretty much a dead tool now, nobody goes there to search for new music. They should update her FB page more frequently in my opinion cos most of her fans r over there (150000). Also @jivemusic twitter acc hasnt announced it either. So I dont think that is even a close resemblance of her fanbase, IMO.

This is a great matchup, Shawn Mullins is terrific and the Doobie Bros. are, well, the Doobies.

This is a great station, every Sunday morning they have “Sunday Morning Unplugged”, which is my favorite radio program.

I’ve discovered many artists on this station. FD would fit perfectly on this station, and would sound awesome unplugged, if something were to be available for them to play.

  • shlitzy

Actually ficticious, you are wrong, myspace get exclusives all the time in exchange for future advertising. Facebook is more socially driven than music driven and unfortunately Myspace and purevolume are the default pages for music.
Next week will be the key week to see what they do at radio, they have 3 weeks to set this up, press is gonna be tough, radio even tougher as it shuts down in a few weeks and TV and retail is all they will have. I cannot believe they will turn around a video in three weeks!

Just an FYI that triple A has less than 50 stations on the panel, with most stations spinning the top artists no more than 30 times a week. It is a start, but barely a springboard.

Sista Otis is playing in Papas Tavern and I hear the whole town is coming to see her. What a nice little reception for her and a tribute to Crystal’s hometown. I wonder if Sista will play any of Crystal’s song? Most likely she would be jamming with Bobby May, one of Crystals gray hair rockstars so could be a possibility. Hope we get some more scoops on the Love is Spiritual situation, was really hoping Crystal would cover that in her album.

Would they possibly have pulled it from there if they’ve changed their mind and it’s going to be the first single now – and they don’t want it streaming anywhere until they “officially” release it?
