..and the name of the album is All That For This, as she introduced this song as the title cut. Still a great performer, no matter the platform. Also, in an interview conducted earlier in the evening, she hinted on a film role as a legendary 60s rocker woman.

  • aj rabin

In my books ,Crystal B won AI season 9!

  • Tinawina

She will always be one of my favorite alums.

  • IrisandLilies

I wonder if Amy Adams pulled out of the Janis Joplin biopic.  Crystal is a much better fit for that role.

  • Sassycatz

she hinted on a film role as a legendary 60s rocker woman.

She’s always sounded like Janis Joplin to me. However, I read on IMDB that Amy Adams is starring in a movie as Joplin, which sounds like some strange casting. So … perhaps someone else is making a film featuring Joplin or Crystal is talking about another 60’s singer.

  • girlygirltoo

Crystal is a very good songwriter.

  • curly_yenta

She yet another perfect example of a talented alum who Idol had no idea or desire to promote in the correct way.  Glad she’s on her own and doin’ her own thang.  Coffeehouses seem to be the perfect place to hear her type of music.

  • standtotheright

Yes, I am very much looking forward to this new album.  Very much.

  • Sharon S.

Crystal’s music is not particularly my thing, but I love her voice and think she’s talented as hell.  I’m sure putting this album together was a much happier experience for her than her debut album was.  I’m glad she’s wound up on a label that is supportive of her artistic vision, and hope that she’s able to achieve and maintain a level of success that will make her happy over the long haul.  I’m willing to bet she’ll be able to do it.

Can’t wait to hear more music from this wonderful lady. One of my favorite contestants ever to grace the idol stage.

  • revolution

hint: there is a tv series coming up about the LA Music scene in the late 60’s…Crystal might not have been talking movie…

  • revolution

she’s not totally on her own, she has a new label…not as controlling as JIVE and they are actually promoting her and respond to her fans.

  • revolution

    Acting Gig, not film role…

  • curly_yenta

She’s on her own = not tied to Idol or it’s affiliates = good thing.

  • revolution

Here is the audio from Sunday night…4 songs, 1st, 2nd, and fourth are on the album…third is not confirmed but likely on the album. It was recorded off a live stream that dropped at times, so the quality is not great. the mix on the stream was not great either.

  • revolution

WOOOOHOOOO CRYSTAL is listed on the roster for SXSW!!!!

  • Ann Gardner

    Wow, love this. Go Crystal.

  • fuzzywuzzy

I like this song and its more folky vibe. I’m a fan of Crystal’s and hope that her next album is folky rather than country.

  • fantoo1

As far as success goes, being tied down to idol is a good thing. Besides Jennifer Hudson, none of the other alum no longer with 19 recordings or idol label are superstars.

  • Caro3278sweet

Bought her first one and will buy this second one. Love her voice, her vibe, her songwriting.

  • curly_yenta

What’s your definition of success? I can’t stand Jennifer Hudson as an artist…. just sayin.

Success is only defined by the artist in question. Not based on a standard from someone or something else.  For Crystal, who we are talking about here, I can only imagine that being free from the confines of a major corporation that is Idol, who has a history of trying to re-define artists into their image, being free from that is truly liberating for her. She doesn’t seem like the type to sell her soul for ‘superstardom’. Good for her.

  • girlygirltoo

hmm, she’s listed as alt country.

well, that makes 2 ex-Idols playing showcases at SXSW this year (Crystal & Kris)    :)

Pentatonix is doing a showcase at SXSW as well

  • durbesque

Never cared about Crystal… Don’t know what made me watch this vid.  I’m suddenly very interested… Sounds like a female version of Mumford/Matthews/Phillips.  Now that I’m into that genre, whatever it’s called, I’m ready for Crystal.

  • DaisyMagnolia

Yet she went on Idol in the first place.  Many would call that selling one’s soul.

For the record, I don’t criticize any contestant for going on Idol. I’m just playing devil’s advocate.

The concept of selling out/holding hold to one’s intergity is elastic and subjective.  Just because Crystal handles her business a certain way doesn’t mean Jennifer Hudson, Taylor Hicks, Carrie Underwood, or any other Idol should do it like her. And vice versa.

It’s all about what works for the individual.  If it works, then they are successful.

  • curly_yenta

She prolly auditioned for Idol to get a larger fan base and have name recognition so she can make a living.  Isn’t that why most people go on? Only a small miniscule ever make it lucratively beyond the first year or two.  I say she got exactly what she wanted.

  • DaisyMagnolia

I agree.  I take no issue with that.  But all of them use the platform as a means to gain exposure–and some will say that being on Idol is ‘selling out.’ I don’t subscribe to the opinion, but some do.

  • LA944

Love her. I can see her playing J Joplin even though I think Crystal has a much sweeter, prettier voice than JJ did.

I have been saying since I first saw her that she reminded me of Eva Cassidy. Kind of looks like her too. If they ever get that biopic off the ground –she would be perfect

  • revolution

Didn’t Kelly get out? Crystal is not a pop artist, in her genre Idol is not a benefit.

  • blackberryharvest

Nope, Kelly is still with 19/RCA.

  • Anny_nanny

I love Crystal, her voice, her attitude to life. She will always be my favorite girl from AI.

  • Jonathan

I love that Crystal is definitely in a happier place right now, and I think the album is going to show that a lot. From ‘Farmer’s Daughter’ to ‘Falls Into Place’. Crystal really is something, too bad she came on the wrong season. But I’ll be a fan for life.

  • durbesque

If they could make Charleze Theron look like ‘Monster’, they can certainly make Crystal look like Janis.  Has she ever done anything with dialogue?  Janis acted her songs more than Crystal does, but the director would take care of that.  Look what the director got out of Jennifer.  She screams now, but she can’t reach the depth on her own.

  • Miz

Heh, opening this post my first thought was how much Crystal resembles Janis Joplin in the photo used.

It would be perfect casting to have Crystal play Janis both for looks and voice. I hope it’s true.

  • Miz

Crystal signed with Kris Allen’s booking agent. They seem to take a very grass roots and organic approach which is something I like. It’s a good way to get away from the Idol stigma and expand one’s fan base.

  • Miz

Early Janis Joplin’s voice was beautiful. Hard drinking and hard living took its toll.

  • Miz

Crystal had a guest starring role as an addict who kills her dealer on the TV series ‘Body of Proof’. She did an excellent job acting in it.

  • IrisandLilies

Crystal had a small role on one episode of “Body of Proof,” the ABC show starring Dana Delaney.  She was actually pretty good at acting.

By the way, I never saw Jennifer Hudson’s performance in Dream Girls, but her acting on the Weight Watcher’s commercials is terrible.  I’ve always thought that she may have won the Academy Award based solely on her singing without regard to how she handled the speaking parts.

  • mzbet

I’ve loved Crystal’s music from the first time I heard her.  I have her singles from Idol, her first album, and will certainly give this next album a listen.

  • ladymctech

    I really like this song.
