Crystal Bowersox Broadway Debut “Always…Patsy Cline” Postponed

Bummer. The Broadway opening of the musical Always…Patsy Cline starring Crystal Bowersox playing the legendary country singer has been postponed.

The show, directed by Tony winner John Rando and also starring Annette O’Tool was originally announced to begin performances in July and open in August.

A production spokesperson told Broadway.com “Due to the lack of an appropriate theater for the show, Always…Patsy Cline has postponed its summer opening and is looking to open in the fall,”

I hope “lack of an appropriate theater” isn’t a euphemism for “we don’t have the money yet but hope to by the fall.”

Damn. That’s the second American Idol alum denied their Braoadway debut this year! Bo Bice was set to appear in Pump Boys and Dinettes which was originally scheduled for a March opening. It was postponed indefinitely to open in March, but was postponed indefinitely a few months after the original announcement.

Always…Patsy Cline tells the true story of the friendship that developed between Patsy Cline and Louise Seger (O’Toole), her most devoted fan.

    That’s too bad

I hope that this show will debut later this year.

Bummer…hope it doesn’t continue to get pushed back. She is really perfect for the part.

I hope “lack of an appropriate theater” isn’t a euphemism for “we don’t have the money yet but hope to by the fall.”

Or, “We really can’t see our way clear to open at all, but we don’t want to say that yet.”

I don’t know if this play is going to do her any good, anyway- she needs to get a project done with her as Eva Cassidy. I mean, she looks like her, she has a great voice (maybe not as good as Eva but not hardly anyone does) and it just seems tailor-made for her and it’s not a story people are that familiar with- so it will be new to everyone, everyone knows who Patsy Cline is- I just think it would serve her better to try to break out as Eva, rather than Patsy, and the window of her looking so much like her and being able to play her might close before she is able to do it-

Ever since I first saw Crystal perform–I’ve been writing the same thingson some idol blogs. She would be perfect in the role of Eva C if that bio pic ever gets made. I have read that the Cassidy family wants it to be Eva’s voice-so not sure if a singer would want to play the role or not.

But, Eva;s story would also make for a wonderful musical play–and if that ever happens–Crystal would be ideal for the role.

My understanding is just about all the good theaters have solid bookings for the 2013/2014 season. So, it just may be there isn’t a suitable house available. Early closings do happen, more so in recent years with backers not so willing to allow a show run if it isn’t an instant success. I think there is a fair to good chance for an early 2014 opening, depending on how complicated the set is.

Unfortunately, this is called par for the course for plays that are slated to open on Broadway. The number of things that can go wrong, most but not all involving money, seems to be legion. just hope that Crystal turns out to be one of the lucky ones whose play actually *does* open eventually. People will fall in love with her voice on stage.

That’s a shame. Hopefully they do find a suitable theatre and have the backing (or get it) to support the show.

Eva is one of my favorite artists and her Live at Blues Alley album is one of my favorite albums ever. Such an amazing talent with such a tragic story, and yes, Crystal would be perfect to play her in a biopic.

  • LA944

It’s one of my fave albums too! Listen to it all the time. I can’t believe that I actually could have been at that show if I had known about Eva back then. And I should have since I’m from MD. She was one of the most incredible singers ever.

  • Miles (Grumpy) (VI)

Huge Crystal fan so I hope this happens eventually. I hadn’t made the Eva connection but based on some previous comments, I went and listened to the Blues Alley concert on youtube. Yeah, that needs to happen.

I was just thinking today that I wanted to see this show.

Broadway seems tricky, and I don’t know much about it. I hope it works out. I wondered what happened to Bo Bice’s role.. Hope they get paid for the time they put into it already.

I don’t think either role is mutually exclusive, neither do I think age would be a problem. That’s why it’s called acting, and that’s why there is make up. She’s really a great choice for both.

I hope it’s just theatre availability and not funding, I’d love to see her tackle this role.

  • Kariann Hart

This would be an opportunity to shine – either role. I hope Crystal gets the chance to show off her talent.

    Me three.

It’s kinda strange. EC was famous in the DC area, except that she wasn’t that famous in the DC area. I saw her live here on several occasions — after I’d seen her once I sought her out to see again. Spectacular.

I always have thought that if someone somehow had gotten her just a bit more press and promotion, she would have had an absolutely huge following here instead of just a big one.

Would like to see Crystal play that part, but if the family wants Eva C’s own voice on the songs, I can definitely understand that. Such an amazing voice. And far too little heard in her lifetime.

Disappointed for Crystal but I’m not surprised. I was super surprised to hear about the musical coming to Broadway this summer in the first place, as there had been no buzz or other chatter about it. I was actually curious what theater it was going to play in because there didn’t seem to be any obvious theater openings. And I guess they couldn’t find one. Hopefully an appropriate theater opens up in the fall or winter 2014

Sure hope it is not cancelled altogether. The show must go on!!!

For all Crystal Bowersox fans in the Bay Area (San Francisco, San Jose, etc), Crystal is appearing at the Montalvo Theater in Saratoga in December. Very nice small venue. Prices reasonable! We already bought our tickets and really looking forward to seeing her. (She and Casey James were my 2 favorites in Season 9.)

I actually saw this play at my small town local theater. I was kind of disappointed as I love Patsy Cline’s music. It’s hard to say whether it was the story or the acting. The story just didn’t seem real to me. Perhaps Crystal and Annette O’Toole (who is a seasoned actress) can make it better.

As for Bo starring in Pump Boys…this is the first I heard. I’d definitely go see that even though I didn’t root for Bo during his season. I like him nevertheless.

I think it depends on who is playing Patsy’s part.
I saw it in Nashville a couple of years ago.I wasn’t prepared that it was going to be so bare bones – 2 actors and no scene change
But the star of the show is Patsy’s songs. And the female singer did a fantastic job. So I enjoyed it very much.

  • macfae

I know. It doesn’t seem realistic but it is a true story. It is based on the book “Locw Always, Patsy: Patsy Cline’s Letters to a Friend”
