Crystal Bowersox performed a brand new song called “Barbed Wire Halo” on stage in Malone New York last Saturday.

The Season 9 American Idol runner up performs the bluesy new song beautifully, despite having to switch guitars (and having a bit of a wardrobe malfunction!) midway through the tune.

As flawless and soulful as ever.

Thanks for posting. I love me some Mama Sox.

Actually that is one she wrote back before Idol.

    I like it, real bluesy.

Sometimes it’s so refreshing just to listen to a good simple blues tune. No strange outfits or auto tune or shoddy production. Just raw talent and true music. Thank’s for posting this. Crystal sounds amazing.

Nice tune. Crystal sounds and looks great.

That is a terrific song and performance. This song being old makes me wonder what else she may have hidden away in the vault.

Crystal tweeted-replied to MJ that while this song is “new” to MJ (and others), it’s not a recent composition..
    Pre-American Idol, pre-”Farmer’s Daughter” CD..

Andy11, she’s got a lot of extraordinary songs “hidden away in the vault”, some of which she has played in the last year at various concerts & events..

If you search for her on YouTube, you can find some gems of original songs – many of which will hopefully show on her 2nd album, that she will likely record this coming year in Nashville (after she & her super-talented husband singer-songwriter Brian Walker) move there next month..

Btw, she and Brian recently co-wrote a great song “Stitches” (in honor of their son Tony), which they just performed at an event last week in Chicago – Again, look for it on YT –
Maybe MJ will post it? ;)

It’s so damn cool to see Crystal continuing to carve out her own niche across numerous genres, and expanding what “country” can mean at the same time…

Thanks for posting, MJ.. So glad Karen, a great Canadian CB fan, was at this show in upstate NY and got such good videos there..

Final fyi: That’s Ryan Suzuka (Crystal & Brian’s “manny”) blowing us away on harp, and her longtime bass player/background vocals Frankie May..

    Love it!

Wow. True blues from Crystal. Love it.

She glows, doesn’t she? Her skin glows, her eyes glow, her voice glows. I will follow this woman wherever she goes – and that was not something I’d have said straight off the show. She occasionally grated on me then. Not now. This is pure loveliness.

This. And wouldn’t it be nice if this level of pure talent and wonderful music was actually played on radio? One can always hope and dream.

Thanks Laurirose. I agree she’s got a whole lot of great originals on you tube etc. but this one hasn’t been available anywhere I know of– that’s why I got intrigued.

I like this style for Crystal way better than that horrible country music she’d been leaning too

  • cwm

Good stuff. I hope that she includes more bluesy songs like this on album #2

6 months ago people here mocked me when I said Crystal has some some stuff hidden away that is nothing like anything you have heard her do. People were replying to me with messages asking why she wouldn’t put her best stuff on her first album.

I think the real answer is other than the songs Jive made her do (that she never performs anymore) Farmers Daughter was an introduction to Crystal…

Barbed Wire Halo and some of the others that I have heard will work together in a future album…This is one of the songs I was talking about then, I have had it for many months. I am talking about others that you will not find on youtube, and they are also not country… One is very Dark and a friend even said she almost raps at times, I wouldn’t go that far but it is not like anything else she has done.

So if you are one of the ones that doubted me when I said she was holding back, do you believe me now after hearing that?

Nice song. I’m looking forward to Crystal’s second album. When I see performances like this, it’s hard to deny that there were was some terrific talent on S9. I really do blame the judging and Simon’s departure for putting a cloud over the whole season.

I’m not fond of Crystal’s more “countrified” tunes either.

IMO, Crystal was the stand out talent from S9, but even as a fan, I knew that she wasn’t the kind of mainstream artist destined for huge commercial success that Idol claims to be searching for.

Yup. Some of us love singers who are not destined to be great mainstream artists. I believe Haley is similar. I expect both Haley and Chrystal to have very long, stable careers, though.

I could listen to Crystal sing this style all day long…she just sings from her soul. lovely! I really hope she includes “Don’t Leave” on album #2 ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LEPTDwZVfBs )

I really like that. Simple. Evocative.

Love it. Crystal’s one of the most talented people to come out of American Idol. I love her. I do think she’s too musically sophisticated for country music. It would be nice if country music fans/radio could branch off and embrace more than the most simplistic lyrics and music. Time for country to embrace a little diversity, i.e., musical complexity. Dixie Chicks were as complex as contemporary country has ever gotten.

  • fuzzywuzzy

That’s very good news for me (from a selfish POV). I had almost resigned myself to Crystal becoming a totally country artist (given the promotion that she’s been given to date).

There is plenty of musical/lyrical complexity in country music though I’d agree with you there’s not enough of it on country radio. But even on mainstream country radio look at Miranda Lambert and Eric Church. I’m a Crystal fan but she hasn’t shown me anything that makes me think she’s too sophisticated for country music. I don’t think it’s her ideal fit though and IMO she’s best when she’s blending soul, folk, and rock. This blues number is pretty good for her too.

I hate the fact that I don’t appreciate her as I should. I get that she’s a talented singer; I get that she’s passionate about music. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but something about her just bugs me. Sorry.

She’s no Ani DiFranco and that is what she is trying to emulate here.

    Uhh.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

BTW, I know that most Idols aren’t unique, either. So why does it bug me with Crystal? I can’t say. :-(

  • fuzzywuzzy

No need to apologize. People just like/dislike the music/singers they like/dislike and it’s often not possible to describe why. For me, music isn’t something that I ‘try’ to like. I either like it or not, and I know pretty much right away. No big deal.

  • revolution

    PJ,

Crystal doesn’t try to emulate anybody, I don’t see why you think Barbed Wire Halo is an attempt to emulate Ani Defranco. I love them both and think Crystal will carve out the same kind of niche and have a great career, but they don’t sound at all alike.
