OK, this is just… really beyond my ability to describe. But I’ll try.

Constantine Maroulis and the cast of Rock of Ages performed last night on Late Night with Conan O’Brien. I have no effing idea what’s going on here, but the giant hair, the sleazy outfits, the bombast, the pointy pose! Cheesefest baby!

Did those “dummies” books exist back in the 80′s?

Check out Constantine’s massive “rock star” scream at about 3:43. Two cats dying? Oh yeah.

Check out the video after the JUMP…

    There are no words.

  • davidlove

Yes, a totally awesome 80′s cheesefest, and I’m mildly entertained……..

  • yaminacookie

    OMG – Disney does Whitesnake.

  • Hazehel

I just checked their song list on wiki – they call the musical “Rock Of Ages” and yet no song of that name (or indeed any song) from Def Leppard? Surely there is a law against that sort of things? False advertising and all that? Tut, tut. Someone ought to complain.

  • hardkandy

OMG… LOL… seriously, what in the effing world is this…

  • t2

    Dear Constantine,

Could I have some more cholesterol with that cheese, please

    t2

This is the Constantine that makes me smile. He really should just take his overdramatic self to Broadway and stay parked there.

  • YankeeFan08

Honestly, that had to be the worst thing I’ve ever seen. Not one of them can sing! Do people really pay money to see this on Broadway. There are no words to describe how bad that was.

  • Buderschnookie

Talent night at The Auger Inn ?

    GED Musical:The Losers ?

This makes the Idol group sings look like Oscar winning Busby Berkley extravaganzas!

  • Lu

I’m still trying to get up the courage to watch…

  • Suzanne

It was better than I thought it would be, given MJs intro.

Theater acting often doesn’t play on TV, and that opening guy really didn’t. I thought the choreography was good and I was impressed that the cast kept the choreography synchronized well on a soundstage, vs the theater stage which must be much larger.

I thought the blond woman at about 3:20 was a particularly weak singer–maybe she’s an outstanding actress?? Or the producer’s girlfriend?? There are so many strong singers; in a show like this it seems insane to hire someone who isn’t. That lead woman who strips at the beginning (what was that about?) was good, and I thought Constantine sang well. But the “scream” at 3:43 wasn’t a scream at all. A rock scream doesn’t really have a pitch–this thing did–and it wasn’t anything the band was playing–total dissonance on that.

This sorta scared me. It was kinda like that “Night School Musical” sketch on SNL a couple of weeks ago.

  • elisad

It’s entertaining in an ironic way…

  • bluejeans

Haha, this made me laugh…but I thought Constantine sounded pretty good. He was never really a rocker, anyway. More a musical theatre guy.

  • Karen

Thank you, MJ. The memory of this will keep me laughing all day. Constantine did sound pretty good though (except for the scream). This suits him. hee hee.

  • NickDaddyo

    THAT was awesome.

  • ozarka

Hated the guy with the Dummie book in the beginning. But the rest of it was surprisingly entertaining. Constantine sounded quite good except maybe for that scream.

  • JudyOhio

Still looking for that little vomit smiley. I could have used it here.

  • bjames

HAHA…I just randomly flipped to Conan last night right as this song was starting, and I was so confused. And when Constantine came out, I about died. What the heck!

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Constantine is getting good reviews–even when the musical as a whole does not. So there you go.

  • Trina

I STILL think he has a great voice even though I can’t stand him and think he’s a huge ball of cheese.

  • cheese

OK, I finally just watched. I hope my face doesn’t stay like this.

  • Kaykohl

    I loved it!

Even though the cast are all professional actors who are used to dancing on stage, there is always going to be one or two in a group who canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t seem to get that the step is on two and the clap is on four. I think this group nails the intricate choreography quite well. The actress that had some off notes was probably just having an off night just like DC, DA, Bo, Daughtry, Taylor and other idols have been known to do.

Constantine has to deliver the scream in a way to protect his voice otherwise he wouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t be able to do it 8 times a week.

  • colette

the mullet ‘dos alone may be worth the price of the admission. Or at least the energy it takes to watch the clip.

Beyond Velveeta!! Love it or hate it. and this clip is plenty to clog my arteries…..

  • nomi

I loved it, the mullets, the 2 cats, everything! (Although 80′s rock with the possible exception of Journey and Styx, is really not my thing.)

If I didn’t know any better, I’d have guessed that this was one of Conan’s mid-show sketches, and have wondered when Preparation H Raymond would come in to hand out free tubes. Alas, no. And including the businessmen in the dance number takes the whole thing beyond corny.

Constantine always leaves me feeling unclean, but I do agree that theatre is his forte. That “glory note”, though – eek! Anyone can hit a bum note at any time, but if I were him, I’d have tried for a lower in-key note like Cook is doing with the LO talk show performances.

I was afraid to watch it after reading all the thoughts/reviews. I actually enjoyed it. I agree with Suzanne, Constantine and the dark hair abbreviated outfit girl can sing (as I’m sure others can) but the blond is very weak. I wish them all much success.

Oh, JudyOhio (I am also a Judy from Ohio :bye_tb:), this is for you

    Just got up the courage…

Rocky Horror Picture Show part II… yeah that’s it.

  • Duke

    OMG
i dont think anyone who just watched even a part of that will be buying a ticket

  • Scamp

I always go to see Constantine in whatever he’s doing. He’s VERY talented and gorgeous in person. He says he’s not photogenic and once you see him in person you finally get that. Thanks for the videos, MJ, they make nice momentos. Cook on Leno and then Constantine on Conan! What a fun Friday night. I loved the play, ROCK OF AGES, and it was a blast to see and experience it up close and personal (5th row). I would love to go back and see it again and again, but it was expensive and there are other plays in town to see. ROA is fun and funny and the songs were great. I hope they make a cast album, but I don’t know if off-Broadway does cast albums. Time will tell… Oh yeah, I went to the play not so much for the 80s songs, but to see Constantine. I hope you don’t mind a Constantine fan posting a comment here. If you do… well, MJ will lose this one for ya.

I was terrified to watch this after I read the comments here. I’m guessing Conan didn’t mind giving the viewers nightmares. Yikes! Total cheesefest indeed!

  • stelladallas

From what I understand, this show is supposed to be a cheesy spoof of the ’80′s rock music and hair bands. So, it’s entertaining if you put it in that perspective. I thought it was fun to see Constantine dance like that. It looked like he was giving it his all! Good fun.

  • CathyMK

Rocky Horror Picture Show part IIà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ yeah thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s it.

That’s exactly what I was thinking- it may be headed for Rocky Horror Picture Show-style camp greatness! I think they already share a costume designer! It’s definitely a loose interpretation of what the 80s looked like.

  • psyche

Kind of entertaining. I mean it’s obviously meant to be cheesy. And Constantine didn’t sound too bad either, at least compared to some others.

  • hapi

I may not like him, but Con can sing and is very entertaining. Oh, and that scream? Give a listen to a few of that era screams…that is a style of scream ha ha. I actually enjoyed it.

  • hoodathunk

Aside from the opening. very entertaining. Who knew Constantine was such a good dancer? I’m going back in to watch it again.
