Boston–first year at the Garden. But, we had several sellouts last year, including Manchester and Worcester, I believe.

New England loves their Idols :)

  • luvadamlambert

    That’s pretty impressive.especially Boston :D

Boston’“first year at the Garden. But, we had several sellouts last year, including Manchester and Worcester, I believe.

Indeed they did. Here were the sell-outs last year:
    July 8: San Jose, Calif
    July 19: Rosemont, Ill
    Aug 1: Atlantic City, NJ
    Aug 9: Worcester, Mass
    Aug 10: Manchester, NH
    Aug 18: Duluth, Ga:
    Sep 6: Bridgeport, Conn
    Sep 7: Providence, RI
    Sep 13: Tulsa, Okla

    Aug 9: Worcester, Mass: 10,791 of 10,791 (100%): Revenue : $643,194
    Aug 10: Manchester, NH: 9,133 of 9,133 (100%): Revenue: $561,192

  • AnninSD

I love that this year is stacking up well against last year, especially in this economy.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Out of 9 sellouts last year, 4 of them were in New England. WE RULE!

  • Q3

Since tour revenues are down so much this year, 84% sold in pretty impressive!

The Great Lakes area has higher unemployment, so it’s not surprising that Albany, Cleveland, Columbus, Rochester and Detroit had lower sales rates.

At least one more sold out show to go, also in New England, is Portland ME.

  • suebrody

New England loves us some Idols! Hey, the Red Sox are going on their 1 millionth sell-out or something…we are nothing if not devoted. :)

  • chatbrat11

My sister said this radio station is running a contest for Idol tix and stated that Providence (9/13) is sold out this year too. She said she tried to win, but didn’t get through.

BTW – They played a song and to win you had to guess whether it was Adam Lambert or Freddie Mercury singing.

  • ravengirl

BTW ‘“ They played a song and to win you had to guess whether it was Adam Lambert or Freddie Mercury singing.

    How cool!

  • BestAI

Impressive numbers this year considering the economy, and in comparison to last year when the crash hadn’t occurred yet. Wasn’t last year one of the top moneymakers (after Taylor year)?

  • selena

Yay Hamilton!!!!! Second highest $$ grossing concert. Ai should consider more Canadian cities- especially Toronto.

  • s0x_prisoner

Sellout in Boston? No wonder I couldn’t find tickets…

  • Studio57

    Pretty proud of Pittsburgh too!

If you rule, why hasn’t someone from New England come close to winning Idol? ;-)

  • Valentin432

Numbers are still really good. I guess bad tv ratings don’t lead to bad tour sales.

  • mitchellvii

So they are taking in about $35 mill by the time this is done and they are paying the talent only $100,000 each? Wow, such a deal. maybe Simon can buy another Bentley.

  • mitchellvii

I can’t help but wonder what these numbers would look like if Adam wasn’t on the show? Maybe half?

  • LVanna

Numbers are still really good. I guess bad tv ratings don’t lead to bad tour sales.

What do you mean “bad ratings” Valentin432? I thought AI was one of the top-rated tv shows? I’m confused!

  • MissyMusic

Ya gotta love Boston! We did have a New Englander in the top 24 of Season 5, Ayla Brown, I believe…… she came from outside of Boston. I got my tickets probably two weeks before the concert and let me tell you, I had to pay top dollar and spent days searching for good seats – oh, well – the concert was great and well worth the money spent.

  • ptslittlecomment

If you rule, why hasn’t someone from New England come close to winning Idol?

On the other hand, Alabama – which has produced two winners and two finalists – doesn’t even rate a concert! :(

  • MissyMusic

I can’t help but wonder what these numbers would look like if Adam wasn’t on the show? Maybe half?

I don’t think so. I think every year there is at least one idol who draws them in. Last year it was the two David’s. I think I read somewhere that Season 6 had the worst tour numbers? Maybe I’m wrong on that, not sure. In New England, at least, the tour numbers are high each year, no matter who the contestants are.

Sue Brody you are so right – we are indeed devoted. Have you tried getting Sox tickets? Almost impossible unless you want to go broke.

  • anticrazyism

Daaamn. The power of a few legitimately good draws. It really makes you wonder why AI keeps catering to its loyal core fanbase instead of trying to be fresh and reach out to new audiences. They were REALLY lucky this year.

  • Trillian

Where do merch sales figure in? Are the above #s tix only?

  • Susan M.

BTW ‘“ They played a song and to win you had to guess whether it was Adam Lambert or Freddie Mercury singing.

What was the song? Did she tell you?

Down from previous years, yes. Bad? Hardly. Any series on TV would be doing handsprings for 25 million viewers on two nights every week. And the three-day-a-week early rounds? A license to print money.

  • Ladyguard

f you rule, why hasn’t someone from New England come close to winning Idol?

ATT&T is located in the south?

  • Bowie1

Chatbrat11–do you know what song they played in the con

  • Bowie1

Sorry– I hit the wrong key. I wanted to ask you Chatbrat11 if you knew the song they played for the contest? That’s great to have Adam compared to Freddie. Quite a compliment.

  • http://www.f3properties.com Animated

Congratulations all around. It is always great to hear sales growth in this sagging economic times. Hey with all the wrangling, fun banter all around the boards, it keeps the AI interest alive and keeps sales coming.
Now to get the CD’s to sell. If the signed 4 gets their CD’s to be top sellers – another yay for Season 8 and American Idol, another win for the economy.

  • will

What do you mean ‘bad ratings’ Valentin432? I thought AI was one of the top-rated tv shows? I’m confused!

It’s not one of the top-rated shows, it is THE top-rated show, and by a very wide margin. The ratings were down from the previous season, but that is to be expected. Every other network and producer would kill for such “bad ratings.”

  • will

Oh sorry Susan M., I see you beat me to it! (Where is that damn edit button??)

  • lorenzo

I can’t believe there were two THOUSAND empty seats in Columbus… it looked close to full, to me.

  • s0x_prisoner

Haha, it’s kind of sad how none of the Idol winners are from the North.

Sue Brody you are so right ‘“ we are indeed devoted. Have you tried getting Sox tickets? Almost impossible unless you want to go broke.

I got a pair of loge box seats at Fenway for face value a week before the game I went to this summer. And they were Sox-Yanks tickets, too. ;)

  • heidijoy

I thought that two shows in Utah sold out last year also. I know the first scheduled one there did,so they added a second which I thought sold out too.

  • Valentin432

In absolute terms, the ratings weren’t bad, but relatively to previous seasons they were down.
Just for exemple, there was something like 8 million less people watching the final than last year, that’s not a small loss.

  • MissyMusic

I got a pair of loge box seats at Fenway for face value a week before the game I went to this summer. And they were Sox-Yanks tickets, too.

sOx_prisoner – mind my asking how you got such good seats at face value? I’m so jealous!

  • Kirsten

I thought that two shows in Utah sold out last year also. I know the first scheduled one there did,so they added a second which I thought sold out too.

I’m not sure where those rumours started, but there are lots of people who have heard them. Here are the actual stats reported by the promoter to Billboard:

    15 American Idols Live E Center – Artist/Venue
West Valley City, Utah – Venue Location
    July 14-15, 2008 – Date
$1,059,660 – Total Revenue from Ticket sales
17,359 / – Total number of tickets sold
19,172 – Total number of tickets available for sale
    2 / – number of concerts
0 – number of concerts that sold out
    $68.50, $39.50 – ticket prices
    AEG Live – promoter

So, the concerts sold very well and made a lot of money, but neither of them were quite sold-out.

  • heidijoy

thanks for the info on Utah Kirsten. they did sell very well!

  • s0x_prisoner

sOx_prisoner ‘“ mind my asking how you got such good seats at face value? I’m so jealous!

Lol, my mom is a part of my community’s yahoo group, and a lady was selling them on there. I guess the woman either wasn’t that interested in going, or she didn’t have time to. Not a scalper, thank goodness. :)

  • Susan

Interesting that the St. Louis capacity is listed as 10,880. It was held in the ScottTrade Center, which can hold closer to 20,000 (or more), but the stage was in the center of the floor and they had half of the arena blocked off.

Minus my 12 tickets for sure:)

  • stelladallas

Even though I will be paying off my credit card for the next year, this concert was worth every penny. Priceless indeed, MasterCard!

  • Hazehel

I’m not sure where those rumours started, but there are lots of people who have heard them.

I’m pretty sure part of it wasn’t a rumour. IIRC, the initial concert date sold out very quickly, a second date was then added (this bit was certainly well-reported), and some people who bought tickets for the first one then swapped their tickets for this show for the second one, so both shows ended up not being sold out (at least that’s how it was explained as I remember it).

  • Kirsten

IIRC, the initial concert date was sold out very quickly, a second date was then added (this bit was certainly well-reported), and some people from the first one then swapped their tickets of this show for the second one, so both shows ended up not being sold out (at least that’s how it was explained as I remember it).

    Ah. That would make sense.

Another possibility is that the tickets sold out for the first night initially, but when they released additional tickets for the first night, they didn’t all sell because people now had the option of the second night. They frequently find more tickets to sell after the initial offering.

Venue sizes seem to be very fluid depending on demand. Some years, the venues are much “smaller” (i.e. fewer tickets for sale in the same venue) which means they also find more seats to sell when they want to make more money.
