Thanks Kirsten. You won’t believe this but I have a degree in Math/Statistics, and I’m still not sure what you mean. Can you explain it in more detail??? I’m just getting old I guess. lol. :)

Concert sales report for Season 8 is looking good. This is a great one in this economic scenario.
So I think if Kris, Adam and Allison release their albums this year then their combined totals hopefully should make strong sales figures for American Idol.

Wow, American Idol is going strong. Will have to see how total album sales tally for all of Season 8 releases by end of this year. Looks like bonuses might be in order for 19E honchos.
Season 8 might just be 19E’s bumper crop .

Can someone please remind me of what each of the contestants earned over the last 2 months (from the concert)? Looks like AI made out pretty well!!!

    Okay, I’ll try.

Unlike the weekly SoundScan reports we get, concerts are reported to Billboard whenever the concert promoter decides to do so (many concerts are never reported). For each report, the concerts are ranked according to revenue (gross revenue based on tickets sales only). The number indicates the ranking.

Here were the top 5 in this report (holy crap, Pink!) (the first entry I have annotated)

1 Pink, Faker, Evermore Melbourne Park, Rod Laver Arena – Rank/Artist/Venue
    Melbourne, Australia – City
    May 30-Aug. 20, 2009 – Dates
$17,234,669 – Gross Revenue (from ticket sales)
    214,956 / – number of tickets sold
222,214 – number of tickets offered for sale
    17 / – number of concerts
    0 – number of concerts sold-out
    $103.06, $79.26 – price of tickets
    Michael Coppel Presents – promoter

2 Madonna, Paul Oakenfold Hayarkon Park

Oh, just admit it MJ. You caught one of Adam’s shiny necklaces last night. :)

I struggle with helping my 4th grader with her math homework, so thanks again!!! :)

  • Q3

    Kristen, thanks for the stats!

And, I have to say it’s really impressive with the economy doing as badly as it is to see Idol 2009 hold up so well.

  • tfmal

So AI did well this year. Do you know how much the idols get paid for the tour?

  • steph6449

Thanks for this. I attended the show at Reading. It seemed very full as best I could tell, your figures confirm it was pretty much sold out.

Although it was a smaller venue, for that rural an area, still pretty impressive. Crowd loved the show, especially Adam and Danny, followed by Kris, Allison and Matt.

  • Kirsten

Do you know how much the idols get paid for the tour?

No. They get a cut of the sales of merchandise. I’ve heard that Ruben claimed he got paid $5K per show back in S2. Clay said he was paid less than Ruben. After that, they probably tightened the gag laws, as nobody has mentioned amounts for years.

    ETA:

Oh, just admit it MJ. You caught one of Adam’s shiny necklaces last night

LOL. MJ’s innocent. It was I who was late in creating this thread. It used to say who the thread creator was, but it doesn’t seem to do that with the new blog software.

    Hey, shiny song is shiny…

So, am I reading this correct…overall, S8 did better than S7? In ticket sales and house size, anyway. I’m…kinda surprised.

Has this been true for the tour overall?

  • ksgirlfordc

Looks like to me the attendance was pretty close to the same on S7 & S8, but the money of course would be higher for S8. They charged more for the tickets.

  • Kirsten

Has this been true for the tour overall?

It’s been pretty much neck-and-neck all season. It looks like, on average, the venues are larger than in S7 (even the same venue can be larger)

They charged more for the tickets.

It looks like ticket prices went up $1 (if you compare the prices reported for tickets for the same venue each year. $69.50, $40.50 vs $68.50, $39.50), but the average price paid per concert goer is $1.29 in difference. S8: $62.09, S7: $60.80. That indicates more people are buying the more expensive tickets (possibly because there are more of them available for sale or possibly because S7 had more sell-outs so all the cheap tickets get sold).

In any event, statistically, I said it’s a wash between to the two season. They both did about the same. Usually, we see a LOT more fluctuation between years than this.

  • maturin

Do you know how much the idols get paid for the tour?

No. They get a cut of the sales of merchandise. I’ve heard that Ruben claimed he got paid $5K per show back in S2. Clay said he was paid less than Ruben. After that, they probably tightened the gag laws, as nobody has mentioned amounts for years.

So, at 50 shows, that would mean Ruben may have made $250,000 for the three month tour. And the amount should have gone up over the last five years, plus the singers get a cut of merchandise now.

I guess you could look at it either way: that’s a pretty great paycheck for singers from a TV show who haven’t released a record yet OR gaaaah! look at all the money 19E makes PER NIGHT.

If the track record is similar to past seasons, though, there will be one big hit and anywhere between zero to three modest successes in album sales, meaning only one singer will earn a really big paycheck from a record, next year, one or two more may do well (but hardly enormous wealth) and the rest will fall back to more modest ways of earning a living.

So hold onto that money, kids!

  • BestAI

I wonder what the difference in pay between each idol? Let’s say Kris made $7K, Adam $6.5K, Danny $6.0, and son on.
