AMERICAN IDOL: Colton Dixon performs on AMERICAN IDOL airing Wednesday, April 18 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. CR: Michael Becker / FOX.

Sooo….is Colton Dixon getting the Pia Toscano treatment? He finished in 7th place, but will be performing an original song, called “Never Gone” as part of his American Idol tour set, according to Yahoo Music.

“I honestly don’t know why I was allowed to do an original song on tour; I’m just so appreciative to have people believe in my music enough to give me this opportunity, and I’m stoked to be able to give my fans a glimpse of what I have been working so hard on in the studio,” he said.

Does this extra special promo mean that Colton will be signed by Universal Music and 19R? Or are the Idol powers that be just paying Colton a solid?

The track–which Colton co-wrote with Adam Watts/Andy Dodd (Jonas Brothers, Demi Lovato, Switchfoot, Jesse McCartney, Miley Cyrus) and Gannin Arnold (Red Decibel Productions), and features Colton on piano and “various keyboard things”–holds true with the singer’s well-known Christian beliefs and CCM aspirations. “This song is about how we sometimes we need a reminder for why we do what we do or in this case Who we are living for,” he explains. “As a kid, you get scared of the dark and turn the lights on to make sure everything is okay. Same goes for God. I want to make sure that He’s there, and He always replies with ‘I never left.’ This song means a lot, because I’ve experienced it. I’ve gone through hard times and I just want to know that God is there.”

Check out the a snip of “Never Gone”  below.  The American Idols Live tour begins tomorrow night, July 6 in Detroit, MI.

Yeah, considering that Nigel doesn’t care about the “WGWG” dominating the show (and Phil is only the 3rd WGWG under his care as S8&9 doesn’t have him) and his favorite is a guy (Joshua), I think that Phillip is really the main TCO among the TCOs this season (Colton might be one too but not the Top TCO). The only thing that can challenge Colton’s TCO status are his performance slots (which doesn’t seem affecting due to his survivability) and his absence of Standing O’s (he might be Stealth TCO by not overpimping him). Nigel possibly knows the demo and sees Phillip and Colton as viable TCOs for the voters.

Quote: “For a girl to win this show again, I think she’d have to be the ultimate lovable All-American girl next door with a big voice IMO. If she plays guitar it might help a little too.”

Skylar. Plays guitar, check. Big voice, check. All-American girl next door, check (debatable seeing that she is a “sassy” type than the “sweet” type).

For some reason Skylar didn’t get the country fanbase McLaina had last year (now I think that McLaina possibly helped Lauren to get as far as she did IMO. Heejun had a bromance with Phillip, Andrew had one with Lee and these 2 are said to outlast “more deserving” people (Erika for Heejun, Didi & Mike (if he was not saved) for Andrew IMO).) and it is kinda sad seeing that she had a “complete package” working for her (entertainer, vocalist, instrumentalist). I wonder what the voting public is now waiting for in a girl contestant.

I just found this article about Joshua and the other finalists (except P2, Jessica & Colton)  http://www.wetpaint.com/american-idol/articles/american-idols-joshua-ledet-on-having-to-wait-to-record-theyre-keeping-the-light-off-of-everyone-else-until-its-our-time

So I’m assuming they have to wait til December to finally start working on their albums since December might  be the time P2′s album will be released. This is really sad and unfair since Colton is a 7th placer and he got a chance to work on his singles and perform it on the tour. Whereas, Joshua a third place finisher has to wait for several months.

I don’t actually completely trust that wetpaint article…it makes no sense in light of past history.  Only if Joshua and Deandre know for certain that they are signed to Interscope would they have to wait, and maybe not even then…you could certainly be in the process of working on an album, even if the release date was a little bit later…

And if they’re not signed by Iovine and co., then all bets are off (as in James Durbin this past year, who did release later but earlier than they’re talking about).  Plus, there is always something you can be doing–not just chilling for all this time…writing, working on your craft, networking…

” I think the right girl has not been in the top 10 yet. A Katy Perry type maybe?”

Problem is, with the Idol format — notably their song and style choices for the competition — a Katy Perry type might not be able to do much on the show that would reveal what type she actually *was.* (ditto for an Astro or Chris Rene type, on the male side …) …..

I do think that one factor in the WGWGs run is probably that the sort of low-key, light-rock-or-country performers that the winning guys have been has given them some of the best chances for making something listenable and widely palatable to many viewers out of the mostly old-fashioned, ballad-heavy repertoire that the show favors (in addition to their WGness, of course. lol)

”We have had rockers, folk singers, jazzy singers, country singers, R & B and Christian singers”

Yeah, but notice that these are all old genres (not that they don’t also exist currently, but Idol has largely used them in a historical way, rather than in their current incarnations…)….. Pop, in general, only really works at the moment — partly, I suppose, because so much of what makes pop pop is having an arrangement that tickles the current styles. And Idol doesn’t do at-the-moment arrangements. (kind of understandable — hard to have a house band that does, especially in the age of electronics.) Nor does it do production-number-type stuff or over-the-top sexiness (see: Jessica, your dress is *too* short and *too* sexual!), and pop today really depends on that.

I’m just not sure how a true current pop person would present themselves on this show, given the various constraints.

” maybe TPTB do owe it to Colton.”

I dunno….Do you think one of them accidentally ran over his puppy or something?

And then, of course, the idea of their possibly owing it to Colton suggests that maybe they owed it to Pia, as well? … Which opens up some even more intriguing possibilities. heh

One who has had a sex change and is now a boy contestant? heh

I don’t hate the cast. But last year, I had about 6 favourites (all of the top 6) – and this year really only 1 whose album I will buy sight unseen, and then a few I grew to like. Basically, I just don’t feel the same need to support a whole bunch of them as I did last year.

This year I watched because of Heejun. I really liked his singing from his audition on. Love his tone and his soul – he can sell songs – and I think he got majorly thrown under the bus by the show with that whole “not taking it seriously” dissing. That was just plain mean and I really don’t get it.

My favourite female was Erika. And I loved Jermaine’s voice. I ended up liking both Hollie and Phillip a lot, and bought their songs too.

I recognize that Joshua and Jessica can sing well, and would have been happy to see either of them win, but I’m not a fan of all the runs and all the unnecessary oversinging. Won’t be buying their albums.

I have no problem at all with Colton’s religion, but I just never liked his voice or most of his song choices. And I don’t get the whole heart throb thing at all.

I’m a country music fan and wanted to like Skylar and I did for some of her performances on the show, but her recorded songs are a bit too nasal and just lacking the emotion, plus I’m not really a fan of Miranda, whose style Skylar seems to like. Skylar has possibilities though.

And I totally hated the fact that Pia and Stefano got more solos and duet time last year than others, esp. Paul who got one song he didn’t even like. Not a Paul fan but that just wasn’t fair. And I’ll hate it this year if the same thing happens, no matter who it is. I feel they should get solos and duets based on where they finished. Group songs or back-up vocals really don’t count much for having people remember you. I think everyone should have at least 2 solos or 1 solo and 1 duet.

Sounds pretty good.  Kinda LifeHouse and 10th Ave North.

CanadianLady – I feel the exact same way.  Last year I went to the tour for the first time ever (after watching every year) and it’s because I liked so many of them last year, same as you.  And I also think it’s very wrong how they will give whichever Idols they choose more time on the tour – because it’s unfair to the thousands of people who paid a lot of money for tickets who don’t necessarily like the one they decide to showcase.  Last year was so boring for me to sit through all of Pia’s songs – I didn’t buy my tickets to see a Pia show.  I came away wishing Haley and James had each been given another song and some stage time taken away from their darling Pia.  I really doubt that I will ever go to another Idol tour ever again because of that – I would have to really like a bunch of them again – otherwise I’ll just wait for their own tours after Idol to try to see my favorites.  That was my first Idol tour experience, and I came away feeling like they were trying to push Pia on me, which completely turned me off to her, honestly. I wish Colton well, but there is no way I would want to sit through a Colton concert. He was one of my least favorites this year.

Last year was my first time to see the show on tour too. I bought tickets the day they became available. This year, I’m still thinking about it, but I’m waiting to see what they do.

    her, honestly.

Yep, I had the same feeling.

Can’t wait to hear it in full, along with his other songs : )

I have no problem with Colton receiving 3 songs but IMO then 10-6 all should have received 3 songs.  I very much prefer the set style of show.  It is just plan wrong DeAndre only has 1 song and Colton 3.

And I like Colton and I like his original.  But fair is fair.

    Incipit,
Received your message. Thanks for your reply to my comments.
Let me rephrase; TPTB not exactly “owing” Colton, but rather “seeing the potential Colton possesses, as well as the error of their ways.
Christian music is very popular. The music has a large following.
The division of Interscope you mention as having been “dormant” so to speak for some time, exists possibly for precisely this particular time; to nurture the talent that is Colton. It is a game of sorts isn’t it, and yes, of course it’s always about the money. Your choice of words “pound of flesh” and “pawn” are interesting. It would be ideal when both benefit; Colton and TPTB.

OK. Under what set of circumstances (omitting blackmail) do you theorize that is true?
If they have a plan, I would be more apt to believe they see themselves making a profit from Colton, not owing something to him.
It is logical for them to think a Christian song featured for stops with  predominately Christian audiences would be profitable on the tour – (They won’t make the connection that it ought to be a ‘good’ Christian song.)
Or, to go further down the path that others have explored, perhaps Interscope is rejuvenating a Christian Label under their Umbrella, if this is a market they are not tapping currently, and they would like to keep Colton (Or keep him happy, and not off to sign with another label after August) In that case, the favor of ears for the song and exposure would also benefit Interscope.
19 operates the tour, and they have no reason to care who signs who when it’s over, except for bragging rights. No matter where Colton ends up, they will still get their pound of flesh, or Finders Fee, whatever they call it – for at least ten years, they have the contract signed.Their management arm also gets a cut, as long as Colton stays with them. But they would care that the tour is profitable, now, this year – and an amicable relationship with their Label partner is also a good thing. Backlash on Colton for favoritism wouldn’t cross their minds, because it wouldn’t affect their bottom line. The show is over. Season 11 is history.
But those are just hypotheses based on TPTB’s track record – they don’t even have good theories backing them up. IDK what’s going on – but whatever it is, someone smells the possibility of money…and Colton is a pawn in the game.
    IMO.

So I would say it is definitely possible as relates to Pia.
