Colton Dixon debuted an original song he co-wrote with Adam Watts/Andy Dodd and Gannin Arnold last night at the American Idol Live concert in Detroit.

The Season 11 Top 10 began their nationwide summer tour in the motor city and will be on the road through September. I’ll be posting more concert videos HERE.

The lyrics to the refrain “I’m still standing here/No I didn’t disappear/ Now the lights are on/ See, I was never gone/ I let go of your hand/ To help you understand/ With you along/ Oh, I was never gone
I think it has beautiful message. Reminds me of “Footprints in the Sand.” Don’t think we can fully judge it until we hear the studio version, but I really enjoy what i hear so far.

I know practically nothing about CCM or Christian rock music, so I have no clue how Colton will do in that genre. I’m not really a fan of his, but I wish him well.

But again, he is going the Christian music route. I don’t know — maybe hooks aren’t as important in that genre? Maybe it is more about the “message”? IDK

Maybe someone who is knowledgable about Christian music could answer this?

“PS – Colton looks so awkward without an instrument x)”

That’s exactly why I never considered him frontman material.

Who performs “Footsteps in the Sand”?

I don’t follow CCM so I can’t really make a judgment call on the song. I also don’t follow his faith. But for someone who is only 20, Colton is very well spoken. He is someone who appears to know who he is and where he is going.

It’s a poem. The person is walking on the beach with God and there are 2 sets of footprints. Then during troubled times in the person’s life there’s only one set of footprints and person thinks God abandoned them. But turns out during the troubled times, God was carrying the person. So Never Gone lyrics and theme remind me of that poem and how God is always there even when people think they’ve been abandoned.  http://www.footprints-inthe-sand.com/index.php?page=Poem/Poem.php

The way CCM works, you should be merrily scanning radio stations in a new city and stop at one that sounds like normal pop-rock or rock, only it’s playing a song that’s unfamiliar, possibly a song where you’re wondering how you missed it a few years back when there was more rock on the radio.

Then you realize the band is singing about Jesus. Oops.

Well-written Christian rock is musically indistinguishable from well-written rock, which is how you get bands like Switchfoot and Lifehouse where there’s argument about whether or not they’re Christian bands, versus bands whose members are Christians. (Both argue for the latter.) There’s also Christian metal (including Christian progressive death metal) and Christian Americana (see, e.g., The Walla Recovery). That’s not to say there isn’t glurge out there, but I wouldn’t give an automatic pass on solid musical construction just because the message is God-positive.

Since Dixon said explicitly in his interview with Billboard that he wants broader exposure than CCM, I definitely wouldn’t give him a pass on song construction. If he wants to be heard on mainstream radio, his music needs to be compatible with what’s played on the target format.

After losing my power for 2 days, and my internet for a week, I really needed a good laugh.
That was painfully awful, just what I needed!
Thank you so much for posting this MJ.

I just can’t get into “God” music. Every time I go to Chick-Fil-A I feel like I’m being preached to by the elevator music.

I enjoy this song but then again I enjoy Christian songs & those from artists who are Christian because generally the lyrics are great & there’s no offensive language which is a blessing these days. I also like Colton’s voice . I think if you don’t it then you’re not going to like this song sung by him. Seems like so far in the 3 concerts -Colton has been received very well. I also think for his age he speaks really well on stage . Good for him being able to sing this song.
