Colin Jost to Replace Seth Meyers on SNL Weekend Update

SNL head writer, Colin Jost, will succeed Seth Meyers at the Weekend Update Desk, reports Deadline. Seth leaves the show to take over hosting duties at Late Night as Jimmy Fallon leaves to host the Tonight Show.

Lorne Michaels has picked Seth Meyers‘ successor behind the Weekend Update desk of Saturday Night Live. In an SNL tradition, it is NBC sketch show’s head writer Colin Jost, who will join Cecily Strong as co-anchor on March 1. Meyers’ SNL farewell is slated for February 1. Jost was one of the youngest writers ever to join SNL in 2005 when he was 22 — fresh out of Harvard where he was president of the Harvard Lampoon. He was named head writer in 2012. Jost is the third consecutive SNL head writer to take on an Weekend Update co-anchor role following Tina Fey and Meyers.

Bits Colin has written for SNL include the “We Did Stop” music video parodying the government shutdown featuring Miley Cyrus, Drunk Uncle and The Girl You Wish You Hadn’t Started a Conversation With at a Party.

He performed stand up on Late Night a while back. Not bad.

Women are not allowed to anchor Week-end update by themselves. Ridiculous, they did this to Tina Fey as well.

  • ht23

Actually, Jane Curtain was a solo anchor in the 70s. Also, Tina and Amy were co-anchors.

Aw man. I wish they had given Cecily a chance to anchor by herself before putting in Seth’s replacement.. I think she definitely could do it well. But it’s all good.

I forgot about Jane Curtain, she has been the only lone female anchor. There’s been 6 men that have anchored by themselves.

Very promising. Looking forward to it! Seth’s departure became a little less devastating to me :)

thanks, Eric….I looked up a few other video clips and am looking forward to seeing him.
As mentioned above, it’s rather a right of passage for head writers to move on to Weekend Update. And it will be good to have a fresh face in the seat. .

I like Cecily but as long as the chemistry is good between her and the Colin and he can deliver, then it won’t bother me. I was never expecting her to replace Seth.

I don’t find him particularly funny, but neither is SNL lately.

SNL’s news update is the only reason I tune in, or did when Seth was on. And I loved that Nader guy’s reports on the hot NYC clubs which was so ridiculous. Sigh.

I agree, most of it is not rib tickling funny, but with DVR I can zip through. Guess I will give it another go, very few shows are funny from beginning to end.
