Chris Sligh put up a new blog post today. He’s going to be erasing any mention of Idol from his promo materials for his upcoming album and tour, and in light of that, he plans to quit blogging and tweeting about Idol altogeher:

With all of this in mind, it seems a bit hypocritical to be tweeting about Idol and Idols as much as I do. So, as of today, I am making a conscious decision to delete Idol from my publishing life as well. I will not be commenting on Idol any longer. I think that this is the season to stop: it’s so horrible that I can’t imagine that I will have ANYTHING to say but negative…and I am simply trying to control how much negative I have a part in. Well, I may throw a comment in every now and then…but not en force like it has been in the past.

So, Idol is a double-edged sword…but it won’t be with me any more. I’ll end with this:

American Idol, thanks for the joy you’ve given me for the last 3 years, both in my career and seeing how other’s succeed. But I’ve got to let you go now. Time to move on! Good luck to you in the future…you are loved.

Read the rest of his blog post HERE.

Ha ha. It’s hard to imagine Chris Sligh keeping his opinions to himself. So, all I can say is good luck with that. (And with the upcoming album and tour…)

Hahaha. My thoughts exactly MJ. And the parting shot that this season is so horrible. If he only really knew what people said about Season 6 at this point in the season.

Season 9 is amazing! One of my favorites ever.

  • tinawina

Oh Chris. We will miss you and your opinionated self. He always causes a bruhaha when he starts blogging about Idol.

And yeah, Season 6 got similar flack, so he really is in no place to gripe about the newbies. Its only been one week, give the kids a chance! LOL

Good luck Chris! He is talented, I wish him well.

  • t2

Can’t blame him. He is one of the few idols that will take a chance on saying anything beyond the norm about idol, and he always gets skewered for it. I never was a very big Chris fan, but I loved that top 5 single.(Empty Me)

  • washpd

    I agree completely, gangreen29.

  • Valentin432

In his blog he makes an interesting attempt at evaluating the impact Idol had in his carreer, not a bad read even tough it seems quite specific to the CCM world.

I wonder if the fact that nobody mentioned him after Aaron sang “Here comes goodbye” has anything to do with that decision. I will give him the benefit of the doubt and say no.

LOL – on the headlines thread I was going to say – don’t worry about what Chris said – he’ll retract it within 48 hours on his blog. He always does. This is a little different than “that’s not what I meant”. But the same general effect. I’ll never understand why Chris seems to regret everything that comes out of his mouth.

  • HannaB4

He’s incredibly annoying, filled with self-importance. At least that’s how he comes across and I have no desire to hear anything he has to say or get to know him better.

What an idiot. Will this guy ever grow up? Yanno, Chris, if you want to stop commenting on idol, you could — wait for it — drum roll: JUST NOT SAY ANYTHING.

Instead you announce to the world that you’re going to stop commenting on idol while in the same breath, commenting on idol. Dude. Grow Up. Become and adult. Learn to take responsibility for what comes out of your mouth BEFORE you say it.

I am glad Chris is going to stop criticizing AI contestants, he should have known better anyhow.

LMFAO! Does this guy have a personality disorder?

  • Laury

In my opinion Season 6 had the wrost male group ever. Since day one I knew a gril was going to win. I don’t even remember who this Chris was…

In my opinion Season 9 boys have a lot of potential and they’re better.

  • Laury

I remember 2 Chris none of them better than any Season 9 contestant (equally good or worst but not better ) in my opinion of course.

  • Hazehel

Chris Sligh sounds completely self-aggrandizing and delusional if he actually believes what he wrote. He actually tried to calculate how many CDs he would have sold without Idol. I have news for you Chris, you would have sold practically nothing, you would be just like thousands of struggling musicians all over the country, most of whom probably better singer or songwriter than you, and most never get the break they deserve and just disappeared into obscurity.

    Such a moron.

  • girlygirl

Chris seems like one of those guys who is outspoken and can’t keep his opinions to himself. It’s come back to bite him in the butt a few times. He’d probably be a lot better off and a lot happier if he DID stop commenting on Idol — don’t know if he’s gonna be able to do that, though

PS – I agree with him about Season 9 being horrible

  • babybelle32

I wonder if someone threw it in his face that the only time he gets any attention is when he’s talking about American Idol. There’s a limit to how long he can rest on having a co-writing credit for one hit song, it’s past time for him to get some attention for doing something other than running his mouth. He is desperate for attention, but the only way he can get it is by trashing a show that’s responsible for him having the little bit of success that he’s gotten.

  • aek

Heh, I don’t hate Chris, but have always found him a little annoying, even when he was on Idol. He has a nice enough voice, and is talented. I wish him the best.

I do agree that Season 6 sucked, and coming right off of Season 5 just made it seem that much more lame.

  • Kate8

I think this season will still be interesting, some of the talented contestants seem very inexperienced compared to the top 6 last year. I am actually glad I am not into one of the so-called frontrunners for the guys, since frontrunners never win.

  • kay121

I actually met the guy.. he does come off a little “mean”.. as he personally did something “mean” to me and my friend a few months ago when we met him. However, I think that it’s all a part of who he is and don’t think he’s actually being that way for the sake of being mean. Kind of like simon. But anyway, it’s nice to know I’m not alone since I actually experienced him first hand. Interesting fellow he is… I think if he wants to gain positive publicity, his choice will pay off in the end.

  • tinawina

Aw, I do think Sligh is talented and I do think he has earned his success in the Christian field. Personality wise he has always come across as a having a bit too high of an opinion of himself IMO– I mean he’s talented, but its not like he’s Bono or anything lol – but still I don’t see him as a failure or as desperate for attention. I think he just has an inflated sense of self-importance. The guy just thinks his opinions are SO right, and he can’t resist telling us all about them. :)

  • Chicagolaw

LOL! The guy is kind of a trip. No way he can break from Idol, it appears he enjoys spending hours arguing with the fans on twitter.

He is talented, it’s just that lovely combination of bitterness and arrogance that seems to get in the way.

  • sma11ie

That sucks. I like it when past Idols speak their minds, uncensored. Whether or not I agreed with him, I never thought Chris was out of line. People would just overreact on twitter like crazy though. It’s a shame, cuz I found his comments on the current crop interesting. I don’t understand what the big deal is that he likes or dislikes certain contestants. He’s allowed.

Chris Sligh is funny — breaking up with AI and all. If he was really gonna quit, he’d just stop without any fanfare about it.

  • CFIdolsfan

I have not kept up with Chris very much, but he has indeed come across as bitter to me, from this entry and from the one where he was giving the season 8 Idols tips. In looking back, I have to agree that the season was not anything like season 5. I gained myself my 2 favorite Idols, Phil Stacey and Melinda Doolittle, from that season, though, so for that I am grateful. I don’t know if Phil might be the other Idol Chris was referring to in his blog; but as far as I can tell, Phil seems almost opposite from Chris in how he feels about the show. And I don’t quite see what Chris means when it comes to being a “stigma.” Phil has gotten praise from many for his vocal ability and for his uplifting songs, and is admired by other fellow Christian artists for having undergone the rigors of Idol. On the other hand, it is puzzling to me that “Empty Me” gets played a lot on Music Choice, which I get through my cable provider, yet I have never heard them play “You’re Not Shaken.” I feel that Chris simply has not been as appealing and likeable to many as Phil, and even Mandisa, are. I do wish him well, though, in his future endeavors, especially if he decides to not mention Idol any more. But he may have no choice but to respond, because there may always be someone who may remember him from the show and will bring it up.

  • Truthiness

    Good-Bye Cruel Idol!

    Whatevahs.

I agree, that I doubt it will last, but in the meantime, buh-bye.

  • bjames

I REALLY wanted to like Chris on the show, especially singing songs by Mutemath and DC Talk.

But he has made that incredibly hard to do post-Idol. Please stop talking and just make your music.

  • cathadhaka

Like we care for what he has to say…
Dude, if you’re done with your “online therapy”, then yes, hit the road!

  • Judee

I don’t know who this guy is, but why he feels the need to announce something like this? Doesn’t make any sense.

  • lucy

    Mr. Sligh opined:

Even my top 5 single “Empty Me” was subject to the double-edged sword. There were many stations that wouldn’t play the song at first because I was an Idol. To put it in perspective: Chris Tomlin’s single off their new record was on all reporting stations within 6 weeks of coming out. “Empty Me” got it’s last add 16 months after we went to radio. We were lucky to get a top 5.

Well, I can’t say that I’ve ever heard this about Idol’s effect on radio play for all alumni before. Seems like people mostly say the opposite. For all I know, he’s correct. But I’m skeptical.

Seems like radio has a certain liking for people the audience already knows from somewhere. On the other hand, there’s the fact that a lot of people have had trouble getting second and subsequent singles played … Wonder if there’s any element to truth to his comment.

Whether it has an element of truth or not, though, I don’t think he should have said it. Comes off as sour grapes or a little bit of crazy or something, to me, since it flies so strongly in the face of conventional wisdom……and is yet another excuse from Mr.-constant-excuse-maker here.

  • lucy

I don’t know who this guy is, but why he feels the need to announce something like this? Doesn’t make any sense.

10th ??? place finisher of Season Six (known to many as the low-talent season, lol). Deliberately whacked Simon with a microphone stand before Simon had even said anything negative to him…. And I think he’s announcing it because he seems to announce everything! (and then very often proceeds to do kind of the opposite to what he announced …) Talented musician with a beautiful voice, however.

  • whosefanryou

Even my top 5 single “Empty Me” was subject to the double-edged sword. There were many stations that wouldn’t play the song at first because I was an Idol.

Or hey Chris, just guessing here, but maybe it’s not Idol bias that’s the culprit. It’s entirely possible that some Christian stations have a hard time supporting Christian artists who are widely known to be assholes and who make a habit of exhibiting their assery on the internets and in interviews on a regular basis? I’m just sayin’.

  • Indigobunting

Don’t know why Chris is blaming Idol for not playing him! Christian stations seemed to have embraced Mandisa, who is an Idol (from what I’ve heard; don’t listen).

I will kind of miss Chris’s commentary; he could be pretty funny with his scathing remarks. He did have nice things once in awhile to say too- he highly complimented Gokey’s current single on Twitter.

Somehow, I can’t imagine he will stay away!

  • lucy

Indeed. You have to hand it to him, though — he’s pretty good at deflecting blame!

I think this whole line of thought relates to his saying that he’s going to drop the AI from all his promo from here on in, right? And that that’s the main reason why he’s taking the no-comment vow? …. If I were he, I think I’d be careful about that — If he still has trouble getting radio play and he no longer has his Idol past to blame, what then? … Think before you jettison all your scapegoats, Chris!

  • oceana

To Chris I would say, “Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.” :)

Seriously. Though I doubt he’ll ever stop blaming Idol for … well, for giving him a platform in front of millions and millions of people for weeks on end to showcase his talent? Right. Seems like I remember him being one of those Idol contestants who sang some song he sounded like ass on just because it was personal to him? or maybe to his wife? DUMB.

Oh well, if all else fails and he’s all out of scapegoats, he can always go with the “they’re all jus’ jellus of me” thing. I could totally see Chris believing that one.

Ugh. Sour grapes indeed… sometimes a little humility is good too.

I only remember him because of that article he wrote for the S8 idols. I had to google him then to find out who he is. Chris who?

  • Chicagolaw

You know, the only thing I remember about Sligh on AI is that he made a rather mean-spirited jab at Simon after one of the critiques. Does anyone remember this? I think it had something to do with Teletubbies. Anyway, I remember it was maybe the only time I have ever felt a little sorry for Simon. Chris just seems to have a nasty edge to his personality.

  • lucy

“Just because I don’t sound like Il Divo or the Teletubbies doesn’t mean” something or other … is what I roughly recall CS saying.

That was when Chris sang Mutemath’s Typical, and Simon said it was sort of a studenty performance and not much of a vocal mahsterclass to write home about, or something on that order … I was shocked to feel sorry for Simon, to, but I kind of did because, in fact, I didn’t think it was a very distinguished performance either, and, actually, I felt that SC was actually probably mainly trying to push CS to do better because he believed he was capable of it. … And that’s leaving aside the time when he actually hit Cowell with the mike stand!

  • sanfrangirl21

It is amazing how inflammed one can get over something we don’t agree with. WE all have opinions just like Sligh does… and WE get fired up if he disagrees with us. I used to follow everything Idol… until my boyfriend told me I needed to get a life without Idol drama. I only come on occasionally now and this time I find a Chris Sligh discussion. He is one of those in-your-face people that you can either love or hate…. kind of like Simon Cowell (and Rush Limbaugh – sorry, Dad!)

I am a big Carrie Fan and remember the negative reactions to her entrance into the country music field (and Kellie Pickler). Does no one recall the Faith Hill reaction (caught on camera) when Carrie won? and Kix Brooks a year or two ago making backhand comments about coming off Idol and not paying her dues. It WAS a stigma to come off Idol and start taking awards away from the regulars. Of course Carrie’s continued success has changed their tune… but it is her TALENT, and hard work that has skyrocketed her to the top – to stay at the top! not the fact that she was THE American Idol. In fact, I think she had to work harder to prove herself because she was Idol.

I am sure there are all kinds of behind the scenes things none of us fans will ever know. I think the drama with Simon and Sligh was “good tv” and ratings loved it. If you check the numbers, viewing dropped after Sligh was voted off! Some of his comments were classic and his original Seal audition is one of the top ten in Idol history.

I don’t consider myself a Sligh fan, but I certainly appreciate his humor and his direct way of looking at things. Seriously – look at how many Idol reporters are saying this is NOT a good season.

  • lucy

I don’t consider myself a Sligh fan, but I certainly appreciate his humor and his direct way of looking at things. Seriously – look at how many Idol reporters are saying this is NOT a good season.

Yeah, I can see how it might strike somebody this way.

To me, though, his humor is way too labored and virtually always driven by defensiveness and what reads to me as various flavors of sour grapes to actually come off as funny.

Although I do think he’s very bright and quite knowledgeable about music, he almost always strikes me as mainly a needy, neurotic blabbermouth who mostly ends up damaging his own image because his humor never ever seems to point at himself. Kind of like Cowell, actually! …

I’d be a lot happier with Chris if he ever seemed to notice his own ridiculousness along with everybody else’s — instead of steadfastly maintaining that Season Six was the most talented season ever on Idol, for example. But I have yet to see this. Frankly, I wish he’d keep blogging and blogging and blogging because I find his neuroses pretty amusing. But I kind of doubt that they help his career much.

  • tinawina

I actually like reading Sligh’s opinions… they’re fun. Doesn’t change the fact that he comes off as an egotistical ass sometimes IMO. Most of the times I’ve rolled my eyes at him, it had nothing to do with his opinions of idol contestants. It’s his opinion of himself that’s the problem. LOL. And his constant need to monitor what is said about him, then argue with internet types. Oh, Chris.

I liked the advice he gave to Idol contestants last year.

  • SybilTrelawney

“I will no longer be writing about Idol.”

Translation: “I will no longer be writing about Idol because my bitterness reminds everyone that I finished tenth. So I will no longer be writing about Idol — unless you beg me.”

“…instead of steadfastly maintaining that Season Six was the
most talented season ever on Idol, ”

I don’t think he says they were the MOST talented season ever…
I think he is LOYAL to his season.

  • Crayonas

I think he is LOYAL to his season.

LOL No, not at all. He talks shit about every.single.one of them all the time. From Blake and Sanjaya to freaking Phil. LOL

I remember him exaggerating the number of cds he sold just so he could brag about being the second most successful contestant in his season and how the rest didn’t have as many shows he had booked, etc. LOL It was funny seeing his getting all defensive and shocked (as always) when people pointed out that in a week Blake and Melinda sold more than him or how Melinda was already recording her second cd (“oh… I didn’t know”) and how she had gigs all over the place. You can only LOL at people like him, to be honest.

I don’t follow him or his blog/twitter, but every time somebody links me to something there and I take the time to read the first page he’s ALWAYS negative, always an ass, always talking trash about somebody/something. I can only think he’s a really sad person since he wastes so much time (and words) with hate and negativity.

  • Bearcatgrad9912

Chris Sligh, I want to like you and think you are talented, but seriously, the more you open your mouth, or keyboard in this case, the more I feel nothing but great disdain for you. You say you want to avoid saying negative things about American Idol anym…ore, yet you cannot resist one last slam to just how horrible you think this season already is. And my friend Michelle who met you in person said you were a class A jerk.

  • TwigLA

This is the exchange with Simon he had on his season.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3LHQRTFTj8&feature=PlayList&p=933A32C7FACF4ABC&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=64

I don’t recall him hitting Simon with a mic stand. Though it could have happened. Chris Sligh wasn’t exactly graceful.

I’ll be surprised if he can hold out never mentioning Idol again …. or using it to his advantage.

  • abbysee

Since he has always seemed to me to be full of self importance, I know he is reading this thread, and somehow, that makes me very happy. Hi Chris. :)

Yes, so far this season sucks, but somehow I still think it’s gonna be better than your season. It’s the only season I have to Google to remember who it’s participants were (besides the superfantastic Melinda, who is more talented than you’ll ever be, and yet humble, maybe you should/could learn from her?). And you came in tenth, lol.

Of course I think I won’t hold my breath as I don’t see how you can keep your mouth shut about idol. Both the bane of your existence yet you owe it a debt of gratitude cause I can guaran-damn-tee that I would not be talking about you if not for idol.

  • merlyhaggard

Wow! This guy has too much to write! I started reading but got really bored and just looked at the comments but he’s still writing on the comments section!

  • Grammie Kari

I have more of a career than some 1st and 2nd place finishers have at this point.

This was just the wrong thing to say when you are leaving Idol behind you. On top of that, he even mentions Adam Lambert by name. That’s a no-no. Chris will have this blog entry bite him in the butt. He may be living in a dream world.
