Season 6 Idol, Chris Sligh has just announced on twitter he’s signed a new record deal with the Christian major label, Warner Brothers/Word records.

“My new deal is with Warner Bros./Word Records. You’re the first to know!!!” tweeted Chris, “I’m sure this will come out but when I was a kid the first CCM records I ever got had the big ‘ol Word W on the label…”

“At 16 I remember dreaming of someday being a Word artist. Wow. Dream come true!”

Wait, since Chris is disassociating himself from American Idol, should I even be blogging this news? Heh. Just kidding (sort of) Good luck on your new label, Chris.

    hahaha mj, you’re hilarious!

and good luck to that guy

LOL! MJ-ITA. He’s announced that he’s no longer making announcements about IDOL and has disassociated himself from IDOL, so you are probably correct that he is no longer deserving of space on your blog!

    Congrats Sligh!!

Congratulations, Chris…loved the first album and can’t wait to hear this one. BTW, HE may have disassociated, but for his fans who are still watching Idol and love Idol news, we appreciate all your reporting, even on those who have moved on down the road.

    congratulations, a$$hole!!

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! That was funny!

And MJ – I think you should remove this blog entry immediately… Chris wants no association with AI – none – he doesn’t need it. heehee

    I like Chris. I’m just being snarky…

Chris comments on AI on Twitter all the time. Did I miss something? Did he commit Idol-cide? LOL.

I think he’s been claiming a tv show too.

“At 16 I remember dreaming of someday being a Word artist. Wow. Dream come true!”

This is odd, when Chris came off of Idol he said that he didn’t want to record Christian music, when he signed with his first label, he said that even though the label was known for producing only Christian music, that wasn’t the type of music that he would be making, and later, he said that his music just has Christian elements. It’s funny how the story has changed through the years.

Yeah, how about that? I forgot he was all anti-Christin music as his personal path so long ago. Kinda like Danny. Oh well, you live you learn, huh? Maybe that had a lot to do with his trouble at radio as well…

  • risalea

I feel like those last two comments deserve addressing. Chris had an offer from a mainstream label, but he chose to go somewhere where he could do music that spoke of his faith. His music has never been typical contemporary Christian music, and I don’t see him leaving that path at his new label. I hope you’ll get to come to one of his shows one day and draw your own conclusions.

  • t2

As long as his next music is as good as Empty Me, I don’t care who he is signed with or how they categorize him.

Oh goodie! Now he has something else to prop himself up about! It’s so odd that he wrote that song Empty Me because he so does not live the lyrics at all. He’s so full of himself, it’s sickening.

I’ve never quite gotten why certain segments of fans get so riled up with this guy. The only thing I can come up with is this theory: Chris Sligh never cared about Idol as much as everyone else did, not as much as we Idol fans do and certainly not as much as the other contestants did. We took that as arrogance and un-earned moxie. But I think the truth of it is that Chris didn’t care because Chris maybe realized what all of us tend to forget: doing well on Idol doesn’t really help you that much in the real world. But we love Idol and we love it a lot. And we all wish WE had a chance to be in front of 30 million people and so we punish him for wasting the chance to be more famous. And maybe the way he handled it was arrogant. But you can’t deny he’s gone better than most also-rans. The Glamberts defend his poor sales by talking about the sales climate…what about Sligh? 60k might be 150k 5 years ago…and he’s done something NO other Idol has done: established himself as a songwriter outside of his own music. He’s done well. You can’t argue with that.

To those who say he props himself up. I’m a follower of his blog: I watch the discussions at the blog among his so-called Blogger Girls. Rarely comment. But be fair: MJ has posted 2 of Chris’s blogs in the past 2.5 years. 2 out of over 100 posts. In those posts he made some specific comments about himself & his career that -taken out of context- could be construed as self-promoting and arrogant. But put in context with the other 100 and you realize he rarely “brags” on himself. He only talks about what he’s done when he’s making a point about something else. MJ herself could look like a Nazi if we wanted to take things she says out of context & construe things however. But that isn’t fair. Give the same fairness to a guy simply trying to do well and do right.

Interesting timing for the “no more comments on Idol because if I can’t say something nice I won’t say anything at all” blog.

Wonder if his new label told him to cool it, shut up, and move on so they can stop reading blogs and Internet groups with comments about his last eye-rolling comment. If I were his new label, I think I’d tell him that. He’s a very good musician. I wonder if they’ve tried to convince him that he’ll be better off just mainly letting the music speak rather than letting his commentary become an Internet sensation.

Chris Sligh never cared about Idol as much as everyone else did, not as much as we Idol fans do and certainly not as much as the other contestants did

It’s hard for me to believe this. If he didn’t care about Idol, he wouldn’t have spent so much time over the past few years talking about it to every reporter who came calling, nor would it have taken up so much time on his personal blog. Other former contestants moved on long ago, but he’s one of the few people,(along with John Peter Lewis and Trenyce) who couldn’t let it go. It seems like he’s spent more time talking about Idol than working on his own career.

BTW, not that it’s important, but Risalea, your post points out the inconsistencies. When Sligh first signed a record contract he said that he wouldn’t be doing Christian music, but now he’s saying that it is what he will be doing. He left his first label because he didn’t want to be marketed as just a Christian artist, but now he’s with Word. It seems like it’s more of a case of going where his only offer is.

Chris has analyzed other Idol alums, maybe he should do the same for himself.

You just saved me about 5 min of my life. This is exactly what I would have written.

  • safeandsound

Babybelle, I never read anything where Chris claimed he left his last label b/c he wanted to be marketed as anything other than a CCM artist…everything he has written over the last 2 years, really almost 3, is consistent. He considers himself a Christian artist. Maybe he thought he could also have mainstream exposure because of being on Idol but he wrote a blog over 2 years ago saying he was a Christian artist.

  • TwigLA

Wait, since Chris is disassociating himself from American Idol, should I even be blogging this news?

My first reaction to reading the ‘headline’ was, ‘I thought we were finally DONE with Chris Sligh’. I wouldn’t give him the space or publicity. THis is an Idol blog afterall, and Chris has nothing and wants nothing to do with Idol.

  • oceana

My first reaction to reading the ‘headline’ was, ‘I thought we were finally DONE with Chris Sligh’.

Me too. He can’t have it both ways.

The only thing I can come up with is this theory: Chris Sligh never cared about Idol as much as everyone else did, not as much as we Idol fans do and certainly not as much as the other contestants did.

Actually, I have always gotten the impression that he cared much *more* than many others have! Back when he was competing, there was that specific talk of a “strategy.” He whacked Simon with the mike stand and gave him that obviously prepared-in-advance insult about Teletubbies before Simon had criticized him to half the level he had done with many other contestants. That, in itself, spoke of caring to me, rather than not caring.

And since the show has been over, Chris has blogged and commented on some Internet boards many many many many times about all things Idol — offering a range of opinions on contestants from every season, including seasons *before* his own, opining that Season Six was the most talented season of all, etc. etc. etc., and now feeling called upon to specifically announce that he will no longer comment on Idol. He showed up at Television Without Pity to specifically rebut things the snarky posters there said about him in their Idol section. All that read to me as somebody who cared a lot.

Meanwhile, many many other former contestants have never or rarely blogged or written commentaries at all about the show, and only mentioned it when some reporter specifically asked them to. I could be wrong about this, but I can’t actually think of *any* other former Idol who has done so much explicit commentary on the show without being asked by a reporter, although I know that’s partly because Chris is much more likely to write on teh Internet than most of the others.

So … your view and mine — just two different ways of interpreting the same set of facts, I guess. I think Chris is a very talented musician and I hope he continues to do well musically. I also think he’s probably an illustration of the dangers lurking in being both an Internet commentator and an artist, though. Your Internet personal can distract from your art, I think.

Perhaps the age of civility is dead…..I can’t believe that folks think calling someone an A$$hole is funny or appropriate. Chris is a nice guy and a good singer. He is simply choosing to move on from IDOL. I wish him luck on his new contract and wish him well in life.

  • Bearcatgrad9912

All I know is that while his music might be something I would normally support and purchase, the way he comes off has turned me completely off to him. I refuse to support his career, not because he expresses his opinions but because of his obsession with taking everyone he can in other seasons down to prop himself up. I know what I’ve read and even in context, that is what he is doing.

  • SpenserJ

I find Idol to be entertaining TV. I don’t much care about whether or not it helps anyone in the real world. And, I would never want to be on TV for any reason.

I think Chris cared about AI very much. I also thinks he looks for approval. That’s why he’s always re-explaining himself or retracting or committing AI-icide. It’s not because he’s confident, doesn’t need it and doesn’t care. It’s a product of raging insecurities.

I’m not a fan of his music, and he certainly wasn’t one of my favorites his season. But, I did get the opportunity to meet him and seemed like a super nice guy. My only problem with him is that as soon as people get annoyed with his little quips – he backtracks. Just freaking own it man. He reminds me of a girl who always needs to be told she’s pretty. And it bugs.

MrRJ,have you read some if his comments? He’s way worse than VFTW…i think it’s acceptable from hu personality to call him an a$$ hole

No matter how much I despise him, though, I’m genuinely happy he’s signed…

  • safeandsound

You guys are certainly entitled to your opinion. I disagree.

Spenser, Chris hasn’t edited or deleted comments since his time right after Idol. He hasn’t retracted anything that I know of. When tabloids and the View were talking about his top 10 Idol blog this summer, not a word of it changed. It seems to me like he learned his lesson in retraction and editing. He says what he says and stands by it. I think you might be judging something that he has worked on.

I won’t defend him anymore. It sounds like most of you have made your decision about him and can’t be swayed. And that’s okay. I have, too, just the opposite way.

But Bearcat, I would challenge you to show me a place where he’s put other contestants down. He’s said true things about his career vs theirs, but stating fact isn’t putting someone down.

And LUV, you’re obviously a Glambert and you’re entitled to your opinion. I think your term of affection for Chris is a little over the top but perhaps your generation is different from mine (I’m 56). I personally think that the same term of affection could be used for Adam in some of the ways he presented himself. The difference between the two guys is that Chris has handled most of his mess-ups in a very small online community. Whereas Adam’s follies have come in a very public way. I’d think that as a Glambert fan you’d identify with someone who sticks their foot in their mouth.

Anyway, good luck…I won’t comment again for fear it may come across as Pro-Chris spam.

There is no such thing as moving on from Idol. He cared very much about winning in his season and tried to get various fanbases on his side but they wouldn’t bite. So he bit when he could.
