Check out Chris Daughtry performing an acoustic version of Lady GaGa’s “Poker Face” at a radio station in Germany where he is promoting his upcoming album, “Leave This Town” due to drop July 14.

Hm. That was strangely compelling.

  • Chris Daughtry covers “Poker Face” – HERE.

  • GeminiDolly

I think its amazing. Great job, Chris.

  • Pam

    I like it! :)

  • lavender1960

always a testament to a great song, when it can be covered by artists of other genres and it works….so kudos to Chris and Lady GaGa.

  • weareallinnocent

Ya know, I lol when I saw the headline and thought about it. But, I’ve gotta hand it to the guy, that was quite good, imo. I love Lady GaGa’s album and I’m not really much of a Daughtry fan (though I own his debut), but I like what he did. Selfishly, I wish it had been David Cook cuz I like his voice more, but kudos to Chris. Well done!

  • julieitis

I really liked that. I think I’m becoming more of a Daughtry fan now than I was when he was on the show.

  • auntieaimee

Poker Face as power ballad. Ha ha! Little too much vibrato in spots, but he did a great job.

  • lucy

I’ve always loved the way Chris can make any song an intense, grumpy, gloomy drama. Don’t want to listen to him all that much, for that reason (though when the mood is right, he’s great for it.) He definitely “makes it his own.” Good for you, Chris.

  • LisaE

This reminded me of Kris’ cover of “Heartless.” A good song is a good song, but sometimes you can’t tell until you strip away the extra and do it acoustically.

  • LindaInIowa

Sorry, 37 seconds of Chris is just about all I can take.

  • rockvixen

    This is so wrong.

  • jmds88

Loved it! I especially loved the fact that he was actually able to turn this song into an acoustic rock tune! LOL. I agree that it is sorta reminiscing of Kris’ version of Heartless. Although Lady GaGa herself did an acoustic version of Poker Face, this one is different. I’m hooked!

  • https://twitter.com/draddee Sunn

Poker Face isn’t really suited for the guitar, but he did the best job with it that could be done I suppose. He should have done Paparazzi, that song has a melody that lends itself readily to an acoustic arrangement.

  • yeahyeahsure

Love it! His voice is awesome. I love it when pop songs layered with so much autotune and effects are stripped down like this. It shows the true beauty of the song.

  • hermy

    I really liked that!

  • Sunshinegirl

I think Lady GaGa is HORRIBLE and I do mean AWFUL, HORRIBLE. I can’t stand her at all. But thank goodness there people like Daughtry who can make even the crappiest songs sound halfway decent, just like Kris Allen did with Heartless.

  • BeckyMD

No bad. I quit listening half way. Although I’m not a fan of Daughtry or his way of rock, I have to admit that he did a decent job. He Daughtrize the song. As previous posters mentioned, a song with more melody will better suit this style.

  • http://www.myspace.com/xmisstarax Miss Tara

I loved it. I wonder if he’d like to do a cover of “Love Game”

just picture it…..Chris and his guitar…..”let’s have some fun this beat is sick, I wanna take a ride on your disco stick”

I wonder what he could do with that? :rolleyes_tb:

    Anyway, good job Chris!

  • lifeisgood

    Love it!

  • onlythegood16

How does that even come up? “Hi, Chris Daughtry, thanks for coming in to promote your album for us! Now, could you sing ‘Poker Face’?”

Gotta say, he does a great job with it.

  • carolinacharms

    Genius! The ending!

  • JJ123

I LOVE IT!!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! I’m not overanalyzing it because I don’t want to….I just know that it gets me all tingly and goosepimply so that’s all I need :P

THIS. My GAWD! He just sucked ALL the fun out of that song!

  • kimberann

He can sing a.n.y.t.h.i.n.g. He really has an amazing voice and love the acoustic songs he does. I don’t like Lady Gaga, but love Chris’s version. I’m quickly becoming a big fan.

edit: keep focused on the subject, not on your fellow posters

  • Dr. Tracey

I like that better than the original.

  • dhunken

Really great job by Chris. Loved it.

  • maturin

    That was strangely awesome.

  • mgk

I didn’t like it. It was kind of boring done this way, and he doesn’t seem to put much passion behind it. I like GaGa’s version way better.

  • taran33

That was good and I’m not a huge fan of his.

  • adh1018

That was awesome! But has he been talking to Kris Allen? That is so something he would do! :P

  • BootStar

I think I prefer Lady Gaga’s unplugged version of her own song, but that was kinda cool!

  • kimberann

I prefer Chris’s version over Lady Gaga’s unplugged version. :shock_tb:
    He is one talented man.

  • auntieaimee

Gaga’s genius is debatable, that’s for sure.

  • poporange

Why is he wearing sunglasses?Did he just come from a poker gam or is he to be like Bono?

  • Tess

Doesn’t he have something of his own he can sing….why all the covers from former idols lately?

  • breakdown

    I effing love it!

  • desiiiire

Good, but the classic Po-Po-Po-Po and Oh-Oh-Oh-Oh is really weird. The rest of the song has a good melody, but not these two…
Chris did the best out of it through…

  • BootStar

I prefer Chris’s version over Lady Gaga’s unplugged version.
    He is one talented man.

They both are talented, but I kind of doubt Chris would be covering the song if he’d never heard Lady Gaga sing it.

  • Q3

Yes, Chris can sign this and I like the guitar arrangement. But I think it”s a little weird having Daughtry, or any guy, sing these lyrics. For example:

Russian Roulette is not the same without a gun
And baby when it’s love if it’s not rough it isn’t fun, fun

IMVHO This song just makes a lot more sense sung by a woman.

    Yes, I agree.

  • LK09

    I love it.

  • suebrody

I love Chris when he plays acoustic, so I am so there. I mean, if Kris could do Heartless, why not, right? :) I would totally buy this off iTunes.

I am trying to think of Adam singing Poker Face unplugged. ;)

  • carson

Love it!! This video is really making the rounds today… Ryan Seacrest and Perez H. have both posted links.

  • Q3

I am trying to think of Adam singing Poker Face unplugged. ;)

Nice thought — I can hear it now. I wonder what he would do with the lyrics?

  • Kiska12

Cool!! I wish i could download that version. Awesome.

  • lizland

Nice version. He almost makes me like the song.

  • AIaddict

Love Chris! but not his verson of PF! :thumbdown_tb:

Sorry, 37 seconds of Chris is just about all I can take.

Congrats on making it that far, I quit 29 seconds in.

    Tess Jul 2nd, 2009 at 4:31 pm

Doesn’t he have something of his own he can sing’ ¦.why all the covers from former idols lately

When you make a deal with the devil, then you sing what he wants, when he wants it.

  • PattyH

Wondering why he’s singing a cover instead of something off the new album.

  • http://www.twitter.com/sarahruth3 Sarah

Interesting. I like it. I love Lady Gaga, and I absolutely flove “Poker Face”, so yeah. Good stuff.

just picture it’ ¦..Chris and his guitar’ ¦..’ let’s have some fun this beat is sick, I wanna take a ride on your disco stick’

Heh. :) Hi Tara! Miss you much!

  • yeahyeahsure

Wondering why he’s singing a cover instead of something off the new album.

They did stuff from the old and new album.

  • kimberann

It’s popular already. The DJ at my radio station was just talking about it. I wish I could download this version.

  • CathyMK

Can this be his new single instead of No Surprise? This one brought family members into the room from all over the house when they realized what they were hearing! I immediately made an MP3 of it. (Though I do agree with Weareallinnocent- I couldn’t help but imagine how much more longing David Cook would have put in his voice.)

ETA: Kimberann, go to Zamzar.com and put the Youtube’s URL in the Step 1 box, then follow their instructions. It’s really simple.

  • erinnthered

I…really liked that. I like the original too, but this is a nice take on it. Wouldn’t mind an mp3 if it’s out there.

  • CathyMK

Okay, I think I’ve figured out how to upload the MP3 to Mediafire for whoever wants a copy. Hopefully this link will work:

    http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=715069a99ec395b77432d3c9683f450ad3593f536eba4919c95965eaa7bc68bc

Maybe I need to learn how to do pretty links next? :smile2_ee:

  • HappyDaisy

Why this song? How did he keep the “poker face” while singing it? :) Was he going to burst out laughing at the end? I think I was. Don’t mean to be mean, just didn’t work for me. Guess I’m in the minority on this one. When his song No Surprise comes on the radio (I’ve heard it only twice), I always think it’s the start of a Nickelback song at first.

  • babybelle32

Why is it that unlike most current singers, the idols sound better live than on stuido recordings? This just shows that most of the recordings by AI alums are overproduced.

  • Miss Chaos

Now I see how stupid that song is and I cant believe that Chris sang it. He should stick to Wanted Dead or Alive, or some of his other covers that were good. And he looked like a mole for some reason.

  • lola

Some parts were ok but that is what I call screaming towards the end.

  • ShabbyChic

Lady Gaga is not my thing at all. I don’t like her, or her music. I think Poker Face is a dumb song, and I would have preferred Chris to sing a cover of another song if that is what the radio station had wanted. I absolutely loved his cover of RocketMan, that was an incredible cover Chris sang for a radio station. Take away my dislike of Lady Gaga and the song, and Chris was awesome-ness! I love his voice and style and I think he is so talented.

  • kimberann

Thanks for the MP3 info. Mucho gracias. :smile1_ee: Nothing like a guy who sings it pure and simple. I don’t need any brooding, phony emotions to like a song. Thanks again.

  • lovegoodmusic

This is the first time I heard the song sound like something I would buy. Daughtry did a lovely job with this song and made me like it. Bravo.

  • primeminister

This is awesome! Well, I love Gaga’s original version to begin with so…

  • adamdreamz

omfg….chris rocks this song……love it better than the orginal….he is so creative …..a true artist and musician……you rock chris…..

  • cjester27

I also am in the minority as to liking this cover. Personally, I think it’s needs more of a rock edge (similar to David Cook’s recent covers of Johnny Hates Jazz’s Shattered Dreams and). This cover? A weeee bit to mellow for my taste (albeit I admit downloading one of the MP3 versions of this song, since the Lady GaGa original is WAAAAAY to cheezy for my taste).

As for why he did Poker Face, per one of his recent twitters, he was asked by the radio station that taped it to do some cover, and that his guitar tech suggested doing PF.

  • sunchick

So, is he being ironic or earnest? It’s hard to tell. I dunno, I think with those particular lyrics, if you are going to do a rock cover, you should sing it with a bit of irony (like Dynamite Hack’s Boys In The Hood) and it’s not coming off that way to me. :ponder_tb:

  • waffle

I didn’t know that Chris played the guitar so well. It seemed like second nature to him, so effortless.

  • Chipmunk

He did a decent job of it. I like Gaga so i love the original

  • heart2

    Very Nice..I really like it!
