Chris Daughtry trended world wide on twiter last night due to a celebrity death hoax!

Rumors of Chris’s death began circulating on twitter after his Wikipedia entry was edited to read, “On January 14, 2012, Chris Daughtry was found dead by the authorities in his apartment.”

Because, you know…might as well be hearing it from CNN if it’s on Wiki! Seriously people?

This morning, Chris had a sense of humor as he  tweeted about  the false reports of his untimely demise:

Oh Wikipedia. The source of all things true. Haha! NOT!! I’m NOT dead, I don’t even own an apartment AND my birthday is NOT Jan 14th! Where does this crap come from? People with too much time on their hands and no purpose? Crazy. However I guess I should say thanks…got me trending worldwide. Haha! Cause that’s important…right? So! How’s everyone’s Sunday going?

Becoming a victim of a celebrity death hoax proves that a celebrity has really arrived, no? Or could it be the work of a disgruntled fan of another Idol. Hm. I guess we’ll never know.

Wow.  I didn’t know anything about this.  It sounds like some folks were bored and had absolutely nothing better to do.  Chris handled it well though.  haha

    What are you implying? lol

Wow, that must of flew under the radar because I also didn’t see anything. The hot topic on twitter was Lana Del Rey horrific performance on SNL last night.

  • Incipit

First I heard of it too – I’m sure the tiny little minds who thought that was funny will find something else squirrely to do, unfortunately.

I didn’t see this trending on twitter so it must have disappeared quickly

    Congratulations, Chris!

I really wonder what would happen if a hoax got out that Justin Bieber died. For one, it would be hilarious to see teenage girls overreact. For two, Bieber gets publicity. For three, Bieber doesn’t really die, since death is pretty horrible even for those I dislike. Win-win-win.

Never saw the hoax that Chris Daughtry died.

Yeah, I was on Twitter until around 12:30 a.m. EST and didn’t see anything about Chris. I definitely would have noticed. Must have been in the wee hours of the morning?

Oh, the devil internet! How creepy it is to read you’re already dead!

For those wondering, it trended worldwide, not in the US, and originated in the Philippines. He was trending the highest and longest period there as well. It was around 4-5AM CMT/5-6AM EST.

Kind of unexpected… Sebastian Bach sent Chris this tweet earlier today re: Wikipedia:

    @sebastianbach

wikipedia is complete unadulterated bullshit. Last time i went there they had a picture of another person on my page as me

I hear you, If I saw my name I’d probably pinch myself just to be sure I was still among the living lol !

I missed this too… you can’t make this crazy stuff up. Some people have to much time on their hands.

Exactly, it’s an uneasy feeling anyhow. But you can imagine his children (who are I think over 12) maybe going oversleep for example, tweeting with friends late in the night and seeing their father’s name allover the tweeter that he’s dead?!

I was oversea last summer without internet for some days, Amy Winehouse just had died, I called a cousin to talk about her and she told me that she heard Eminem died too(I think he had a small car accident). I was so shocked for 24h till I got it right(I like him) and I couldn’t check anywhere but TV where it was only about AW death.

Agree, it would  have been  terrible if  one of his children saw it .Hopefully they didn’t .

Thanks, EmyR.  That explains it.  Me between 5 and 6 a.m. EST?  Snooooozzzzzzzzing.  It’s probably a good thing it trended at that odd hour.  MJs site would have crashed for sure if it had been early evening.

I hope his kids aren’t on twitter and if they are I hope they are in enough contact with their dad that they’d know if he died before it hit the internet.

Celebrity death hoaxes (sp?) have been around since before the internet.  Abe Vigoda who played Fish on Barney Miller always had to confirm that he was alive because people kept reporting he was dead.
