Chris Brown & Rihanna in Talks to Reunite on American Idol? (RUMOR)

Oh Dear God. This can’t be true.  EOnline is reporting that Chris Brown and Rihanna are in talks to reunite on Idol. The two recently recorded feature parts on each other’s studio tracks. As if that weren’t controversial enough.

American Idol producers are in talks with Chris Brown and Rihanna about possibly performing together on the show this season, a source close to the situation exclusively tells E! News.

“They want Chris and Rihanna to reunite on the show,” the insider says. If they were to duet on Idol, it would be their first public appearance together (on purpose, at the same time), let alone their first live collaboration, since early 2009, when Brown was arrested for assaulting his then-girlfriend Rihanna.

Rihanna’s rep denies the rumor, but EOnline says that their source tells them, “Fox has not yet approved the pairing…the idea is still in the very early stages of discussion.”

C’mon. No way this is true. The outrage would have a negative impact on a show that’s already struggling. There are better ways to create controversy and buzz. Nigel Lythgoe can be infuriating, but he’s not an idiot, or tone deaf to pop culture.

Isn’t “Birthday Cake” a bit too out there for American Idol? Unless they have “Turn Up the Music” in mind.

  • Anonymous

I will flat out refuse to watch any such disgusting attempt to pander to the morally bankrupt idiots of the world. Whoever thought up this shameful concept is a complete moron.

  • Tess

I firmly believe this is a “planted” story and my pea sized brain doesn’t have any trouble attributing it to someone from the opposition (hmm…The Voice or X-Factor) putting it out there to stir the pot and throw a little dirt on the “all-american” show, Idol.

Reading the “comments” on E’s site is a pretty good indication that the pairing up of these two ego-maniacs (yup, Rihanna is as egotistical as Chris in my book) on AI would be a big nail in Idol’s coffin and Nigel and Company, though loose cannons at times, just aren’t stupid enough to commit reality show suicide…they aren’t the Kardashians for heaven’s sake.

  • Anonymous

I agree, I can’t see them doing Birthday Cake, it would have to be Chris’ song, which is pretty high on iTunes right now.

Oh, I can definitely see Idol doing this; imagine the ratings?

  • Anonymous

Oh cmon.  Hyperbole, much?  AI if far from “struggling”.  It’s had no more of a ratings decline than any other 10 year old show.

Further, I am not about to write off a 22 year old kid.  I’ve been the victim of abuse – I don’t take that lightly.  But people can change and grow, especially at this age.

Should we kill him?  How about put him in prison for 50 years?  Or shall we just make him a pariah for the rest of his life, force him into bankruptcy and hopefully homelessness – would that work for everyone’s sense of justice?

He’s a kid.  I hope he’s gotten control of his demons.  If not, they will reappear soon enough and we can proceed to judge and punish him for the rest of his life, all 70 years or so.

  • GS61

Unless she brings a bat on stage and beats the crap out of him as part of the performance, I’m not watching.

On second thought, she’s just as sick as he is. They deserve each other.

  • windmills

    Planted story is planted.

But, if this happens then I hope Big Bang Theory, Modern Family, and The Voice  crush AI in ratings that week.

  • Anonymous

I would be disgusted if Idol were to go there.  I guess if they are desperate for ratings, but otherwise I see nothing positive out of doing this.

  • http://twitter.com/ladymctech ladymctech

I think this is an attempt to rekindle a younger audience’s interest in Idol, if indeed the rumor is true. Some folks are still listening to and buying Chris Brown’s music in spite of what happened.

  • Tess

The one thing my Mother taught me was “once” is one time too many as far as physical abuse…end of story.  Chris deserves no second chance…if he “ever” thought that battery was an answer for his issues the man has anger problems that go far beyond the norm.  And seeing the headlines that still surround him he doesn’t have a clue that how he “reacts” is dangerous and out of control.  Nope, nada, no second chance for this guy and if Rihanna chooses to give him the time of day she is just as bad and as troubled as he is.

  • http://twitter.com/mcdeallover Sunny Mc

Brown has not shown an ounce of remorse, and still has an out of control temper, this is why I boycot him. Access Hollywood reported yesterday that he stole a cell phone away from a fan who was took a pic  the other day and said “b!tch, you ain’t posting pictures of me” This happened Feb 19. Not to mention the lovely tweet he posted  after he won at the grammys.

American Idol is my favorite show, but I will never watch again if they have him on.

  • Anonymous

Well then.  I guess there’s no need for discussion, as you’ve said it all.

  • Anonymous

A younger audience isn’t going to be interested in AI regardless of who the guest performers are—kids will tune in to see Rihanna and Chris, then tune right back out.

And, you know what, they can have Chris on, fine. Whatever. I get that he’s popular. But a highly publicized Idol performance of Chris and Rihanna together would be shameful.

  • Anonymous

Wow. TPTB must be really desperate to even consider this. I mean, I know 15 million viewers is pretty pitiful for AI, but this is just ridiculous. Find some other way to get buzz for this show.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

I don’t think this is true. It makes no sense.

  • Anonymous

The message this sends to young girls as well as boys is just so horrifying.  Just go ahead and go back to the guy who beat the crap out of you and then he can be rewarded by getting a guest spot on the highest rated show in the world. I was disturbed when he won the Grammy but this is really disgusting. I feel sick right now.

If true, then this is an absolute suicide for Idol.

  • Anonymous

I to hope the story is just a plant but if it is not it is disappointing on so many levels from Rhiannon herself to Nigel.
Our society continues to turn the other cheek when a star of some genre whether it be Ben R in football or Chris B in music we are all to ready to forget what they have done just so we can be entertained. I do believe people can change grow up whatever however Chris B has not shown that is the case for him.

  • Kirsten

This is a really bad idea.

    Stay somewhat classy Idol.

  • Anonymous

He’s not a kid, he’s a grown man, and he was a man when he beat her. Can people grow, sure, but to date he has yet to act as if he has learned anything from what he did. He has continuously acted like he was the victim.  If he had ever acted as if he were truly sorry for his actions, truly displayed even a modicum of regret it probably wouldn’t be an issue.

To date, he has never acted abashed for his violent behaviors, just annoyed that anyone was calling him out.

  • http://kristentheyellowlab.blogspot.com/ ZsusK

Should we kill him?  How about put him in prison for 50 years?  Or shall we just make him a pariah for the rest of his life, force him into bankruptcy and hopefully homelessness – would that work for everyone’s sense of justice?

Excuse me.  But, “the kid” is doing just fine. If I recall, he had not one but TWO performances on the Grammys and won an award.  No one here is denying him the right to earn a living. And he seems to have plenty of fans who listen to his crappy music and who want to defend him at every turn, so I wouldn’t worry about him.

What is upsetting is the fact that Rhianna is following the traditional path of victims of domestic abuse.  She has let the man who punched her in the face and tried to strangle her back into her life. (Because it’s good to give everyone a second chance? No.  Because she did not, apparently, get the kind of counseling needed to help her recover from the trauma she endured.)  It is even more disturbing  that the record producers and labels are USING what happened between the two of them to sell records.  It is being treated like some sort or Romeo and Juliet tale, but it’s far, far from it. Being beaten by your partner, breaking up with him, then finding your way back to him because “he’s changed” is not romantic.  It’s dangerous and desperate. And that includes getting back together for a business venture.  It’s bad enough they recorded together. (And if Chris Brown is all that, he shouldn’t NEED Rhianna on his records.)  But, to have Idol want them to make their first appearance on the show so all the world could see these two star-crossed lovers reunite is a disgusting attempt to generate buzz over a sad and painful event in Rhianna’s life.

For the record, I have a feeling it’s not true and is just a planted story.  But it still makes me sick.

  • Guest

First of all…”struggling”? Please.  Unclutch the pearls.

Secondly, I think the whole Rhianna/Chris Brown thing is ridiculous and disgusting, but hey….she’s the victim afterall. Who are we to tell her she can’t forgive him?  It’s sad, but it’s her life.

But AI should stay out of it.

Then again,  if they don’t have them on the show, someone else will.

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

Disgusted.  I don’t think even Rihanna and Chris Brown fans want to see them together again.  Chris Brown should thank his lucky stars that he was able to continue his career after the incident.  Same for Rihanna.  Getting back together in ANY capacity is just going to remind everyone of what happened.

The fact that they even made music together tells me that they’ve lost the plot. They BOTH need to take a LOOOOONG break.

This makes no sense whatsoever.  If this is indeed true, then talk about a show jumping the shark!

Statically Rhianna will return to her abuser and statistically he will abuse her again. Some people make it out of the cycle many do not. What I don’t like is that Rhianna will constantly be called out for her decision to return (if she is) and putting herself in harms way. Which would be true but too much focus is on the victim (as in blaming the victim or making them somehow responsible) IMO. Chris was wrong to beat her period. Men/women anyone should not be beating anyone. Period. For me it’s too much like blaming women for getting raped! They don’t rape themselves. Men (nor women) should not rape. We need to focus on teaching people doing the crime IT’S WRONG, IT’S always wrong. Women shouldn’t have to be careful to not get in the position where they are abused or raped. The problem is the person committing the crime. Why are we not teaching men how to not rape instead of having to teach our daughters how to be careful. Sorry for rant.

This Chris piece of garbage was not adequatly punished nor has he shown any remorse or sign he has his temper under control. But since they are both hot commodities they will get gigs and there will be those pushing them back together (if they aren’t doing it on their own). In my opinion society should still be black balling Chris until he demonstrates some real compassion and evidence he has rehabilitated him self. I think he’s another ticking time bomb waiting to do it again. Oh but he didn’t actually kill her so it’s ok.

If true, then this is an absolute suicide for Idol.

For real.  If this is true, I know I would never watch the show ever again.  Other people might be like that, too.

Idol can’t be that desperate for ratings and publicity, can it?

  • Anonymous

    Really not a good idea

  • Anonymous

I just saw an article that Chris Brown grabbed a $500 iPhone out of a female fan’s hand and called her a bitch before his car sped off. There is no way anybody should give him a platform, much less a traditionally  “family show” like AI.

  • Anonymous

I think many parents of teen-aged children would be disinclined to let their children watch this show.  I would not watch it and also would never watch Rihanna again anywhere.  She is an idiot to be dueting with Chris Brown and such stupidity is a horrible example.  Every time I forgive Chris Brown he says something obnoxious; I give up, the guy is just obnoxious.  He has many apologists and a lot of talent, but he seems to bask in his own ill-temper.  He deserves defeat and no career supported by the public.

  • sdmama

American Idol was supposed to be family friendly show. Seriously? What kind of message are they sending?

If this is true, really disappointed by Rhianna. She could have shown these young girls that you can walk away from bad relationship and could have been a role model.  (Adele, anyone?)  Dump the guy, come back as successful solo singer, with a new boyfriend to the show.

Yes, she is the victim, but she is a rich successful victim.  If she can’t shake the bad habit, girls watching her would feel that maybe they have to stick with what they got, since obviously even Rhianna can’t find a better partner.  And punching a girl friend is obviously forgivable action, to boys who are watching.

The cynical part of me thinks that there will be people tuning in for this and this could serve as rating bump.  I feel my feminism burning inside of me.

  • Tess

So, with all of the negative comments so far what makes anyone think that Idol is stupid enough to be pursuing this (especially since they have denied it).  This whole thing reeks of “set-up” by the opposition…and considering all of the rumors coming out of the X-Factor camp I wouldn’t give them a pass on being the mole…nor would I rule out The Voice, either.

I think someone with a lot of influence or a lot of money is pulling big strings for Chris Brown. They got him on Dancing With The Stars last year when nobody on that show or it’s family oriented audience wanted him on. They have got Rhianna to record duets with him. And now they are pulling strings to get them to reunite on the most watched family show on TV. The idea they are pushing is that if Rhianna so publicly forgives him, how can the public keep hating on him.

ugh they are already reuniting every night in their respective hotel rooms/homes. how sad for her. pls don’t put it on tv kthx

I don’t know who the politiciians are workin’ this crap for Chris but is it JayZ’s camp?
Anyway, on the lighter side, put them on the Voice when Miranda is there….might be a big ratings boost.  And bring the bullet proof – Chris.

  • Anonymous

As much as I don’t want this to happen, I seriously doubt it would end the show cause it’s all about money.

  • Miss Chaos

Chris Brown is a puke punk, I hated him on the Grammys, he isnt even good.  Woopie on the View stated that given we dont know what happened, we cant make judgement on Chris!  WTF,  she punched her self in the face?  This just makes me sick, and I dont even like Ri, but NO ONE should be putting their fists on anyone.  I get all over my grandkids when they  are hitting and punching each other, it makes me so mad.  Sorry for the rant I just feel so strong about this.

I love AI but if they put that piece of no talent trash on there, I may have to give up the show,  Please let this be a rumor, and please Nigel make it go away, the show doesnt need this kind of publicity.

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

I seriously doubt it is Jay-Z.  He doesn’t run Chris’s career.  He runs Rihanna’s.  And I’m pretty sure Jay-Z has ZERO love for Chris.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

Ain’t that the truth. Didn’t he try to ban Chris Brown from industry stuff after the incident? JayZ one of the few R&B/hip-hop celebs to have shown open anger at Chris. He is very protective of Rihanna, she’s like his little sister.

In fact, the rumors are that he is furious at Rihanna for the remixes and is just about done with her.

  • Anonymous

that’s good to know.  i thought he was behind both of their careers.  so who is behind chris?

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

Yeah, I think Jay-Z went out of his way to get Chris banned and to keep him away from Rihanna.  And now Rihanna is just running back to Chris.  If I was Jay-Z, I’d be fed up with her too.

I think it’s time for Rihanna to take a break from the spotlight anyways.  She’s become over-exposed these days.  I can’t turn on the radio without every 3rd song having Rihanna on it.  I’m getting annoyed now.  And now with this whole Chris Brown BS, I’ve officially had enough of her.

She should have taken a break right after the incident to work on herself and heal emotionally but she kept chugging right along.  I’m sure she was pressured to do so but I don’t think continuing to work did her any good.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

You ready for this? The person who signed Chris Brown was…. L.A. Reid. LOL

Chris Brown was the Justin Beiber of the R&B world. He had his first hit at 15/16 or so and a lot of little girls (plus some big ones) immediately fell in love. That’s why he has such a strong internet army of defenders.  They are girls who have had crushes on him for years. Imagine if some of the Justin Beiber fans never let go.

The sad part is he had such a squeaky clean rep. His music was age appropriate and he did not promote criminal activity. All the moms felt comfortable letting theirs daughters fall for him. And then he does this. Now all those little girls are making excuses for his behavior as he morphs into this hyper sexual song generator and adopts a violent persona. Sad.

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

I remember that.  I used to LOVE Chris Brown.  I too was under the impression that his rep was squeaky clean and appreciated that he did age appropriate music.  I thought he and Rihanna were a great couple.  Then all that sh!t went down.

But unlike those little girls, I couldn’t and wouldn’t defend him.  I hoped he would learn from his mistakes but it’s obvious he hasn’t.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Just. no.  If this were to happen on Idol, I would stop watching the show.  Period.

  • Ringo

American Idol is driven by one thing.  Ratings.  A Chris Brown/Rihanna rematch/reunion would be a ratings bonanza, bringing in tons of new/old viewers.  The few viewers that they lose will be dwarfed by the new viewers they gain/regain.  My personal opinion, I would only get behind this stunt if Rihanna ends their duet by kicking Chris in the nuts!  But I likely would continue to follow AI regardless.

  • Chris

I don’t want to see it. Period. Love Idol, hate even the thought of Rihanna and Chris together.

  • Chris

“Unless she brings a bat on stage and beats the crap out of him as part of the performance ….”

Well that’s the first thing about this pair that might be worth watching …. I’m not a violent person but he deserves a good kick in the pants.

  • Anonymous

For real???  I never followed him much but remember he danced pretty amazingly 5 or so years ago on some awards show.  Something about him I didn’t like though – and hitting Rhianna allowed me to put a finger on it.  Good information!!  Thanks!

Who is his present day manager/ment?

I’m also glad to hear about JayZ fed up with Rhianna.  Don’t follow her either.  Again, something about her I never liked.  There must be a fine line between wanting to help her and wanting to watch the door hit her in the ass, (I would think).

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

I don’t know who’s in charge of Chris Brown these days.  His label was JIVE records but JIVE folded and I don’t think any of the other Sony labels have officially taken him on yet.  Maybe RCA “inherited” him by default.

ETA: Apparently his manager is the woman it was alleged he was having an affair with. Which triggered the argument Rihanna and Chris had which resulted in the beat down. So there’s that…

  • Mateja Praznik

Chris Brown is now with RCA, like most former Jive artists. Outcast went to Epic. And Avril Lavigne left RCA for Epic because she wanted to work with LA Reid again.

  • Reflections On Life

This is AI diluting its brand, jumping the shark. This reunion performance better fits XF US image, the show that makes 13-year-old girls melt onstage.

Both of these two needed a 3-5 year break from the record industry to recharge and mature. But seems the record industry is more interested in churning every last $ out of kids during ages 20-30 and then tossing them aside, rather than nurturing a long career or good mental health.

Those who wonder why young people are giving Chris Brown a second chance might look at why baby-boomers had been giving Charlie Sheen a pass for 20 years, granting him major tv success, despite a 20yr history of assaulting and battering gfs & wives sometimes with guns – you’ll find your answer there.

[FWIW I've been boycotting C Sheen for 20 years (last saw him in Platoon and Wall Street), been disgusted that the general public has supported his career all these years, and am flabbergasted that "tiger's blood" and "goddesses" led to his career downfall but domestic violence did not.]

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_5CTSGSGATMXQESVDDD7RWQRYXU Jane

This just HAS to be a rumor.

Otherwise, it will be Idol’s “jump the shark” moment, and I’m not ready for that.

  • musicality

Stupid idea if it’s true. Doesn’t Uncle Nigel know that the Idol viewers tend to be conservative and old. Nothing like the stink of desperation.

  • Anonymous

    lmao!  bat on stage.. hahaha

So is 2012, the year Idol finally jumps the shark?

This collaboration would be the lowest of lows for any industry.

It would be like watching Nancy Kerrigan ice skate with Tonya Harding at the Olympics.. just NOT done!  You don’t play nice with a violent offender… EVER!!  Especially one that doesn’t see anything wrong with his/her behavior.

  • Anonymous

I would absolutely boycott whatever show they are on.  I am so done with Rhianna if she truly gets back with CB.  Done. Won’t buy her music, will complain to the radio stations for playing her.  She is making the worse statement ever to abused women by her actions.

  • Tera2

I don’t condone fighting and beating up on anyone, but people deserve to be giving a chance after a mistake, and he was 19 at the time – and Chris Brown has payed for it with the law, and even Rihanna has moved on and they’ve obviously put their differences aside, so I don’t have a problem with them performing on idol.  I actually look forward to it now that I know.

Chris Brown is very talented with a great voice, and I appreciate he made a strong come back after being down and won Grammy, and he made a lot collaborations with other artists too and he always makes the song better and upstage the artists.  I hope he can avoid future personality problems for his own good and career though.  Also, there are many artists from the past and even visual artists who had some personality problems and we still appreciate their paintings/work of arts today or music today.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, I’m okay with artists who are different or outside the box. I’m okay with those artists who have personality problems. I’m not okay with a man who tries to strangle his girlfriend. Beating the shit out of a woman is different than artists having personal problems.

If AI brings C & R on to perform, that will be an episode I will skip. It might just convince me to stop watching the show altogether. There are other singing contests I can watch in its place.

  • Tera2

There are artist who have even shot at people who still went on to have a career.   He’s was a teenager at the time and not in his right mind and intoxicated.  He hasnt been beating on other women after that and he’s been remorseful and apologized to anyone who will listen.   Its not right to hit people but he could have committed worse crime than that then I’d expect people not to forgive. Also, when Adam Lambert had his drunken distruption at a party for lady gaga, and recently went on to fight and hit someone while fighting his boyfriend at a club people were so ready to make excuses for him and forgive quickly and no one will say idol shouldn’t have him on for his disruptive mentality.  Who knows what Adam’s anger will cause in the future, but I’m sure people will be ready to forgive.  Anyway, if idol has Chris Brown and Rihanna on go right ahead and not watch it, but others will.

  • Anonymous

CB was 19, which is a legal adult. He beat his girlfriend’s face repeatedly with his fists and he strangled her. I wouldn’t support an artist who tried to shot their girlfriend/boyfriend either and I certainly wouldn’t expect American Idol to have the couple on their show singing together.

Adam didn’t hit another human being at Gaga’s party. There was no physical violence between Adam and his boyfriend in any way. What Chris Brown did to Rihanna is not remotely comparable to Adam’s fist going through a ceiling because he was standing on a chair and dancing. Surely you can see where beating your girlfriend’s face into a bloody mess and strangling her is something that is not comparable to knocking a hole in some sheetrock.

I don’t look for saints in the artists I follow. I don’t have issues with people having personal problems, but I don’t support artists who beat other human beings to a pulp.

I don’t need your permission to do what I feel convicted to do. I could care less if others watch the episode and never mentioned what others should or should not do. This is my personal choice and there are many who agree with me in this thread, so I’m not sure why you chose me to attack about my personal opinions and feelings on this matter.

  • http://www.fatladysings.us/ TFLS

I dunno.  I’d like to think the story’s a plant…….but money more often than not trumps morality of late.  It’s controversial, people like to look at train wrecks.  All that translates into mucho moola – at least in the short term.  I know won’t watch.  If Idol does it, they’ll hear about it from me – in unflattering terms.  And I wouldn’t be surprised if Idols ratings, though spiking for that one night, wouldn’t continue their downward slide – only perhaps a wee bit faster.

  • Niall

I don’t consider this story planted so much as leaked by someone who is horrified that AI is even considering this. And I do believe it’s under consideration (or was) as a result of their ratings slide. It would not be difficult for me to watch something else one night instead of AI. But sadly, others won’t feel the same way and they WILL get huge ratings if they do it. Huge. Maybe not the core AI audience but the casual audience and all of Chris and Rihanna’s nutty fans would definitely tune in.

  • musicality

Did you see Rihanna’s twitter feed. What a complete and utter pig she is.

She insulted a young female fans looks thereby setting all of Rihanna’s fans to cyber bully the young girl. Rihanna is totally gross. Go read her feed. @rihanna:disqus

Would you expect anything more from her, she’s a unruly, classless skank who has no self control and the morals of a common streetwalker. At the rate she’s going, she’s going to be another one of those entertainers who die young due to excess and people enabling her reckless and trashy behavior. The way she’s behaving, I wonder if she has a drug problem.
