Cassadee Pope, in the midst of her The Voice victory lap, stopped by Live with Kelly and Michael in New York City this morning to perform “Over You”. The Miranda Lambert tune sailed to the top of the iTunes charts when it was initially released during the competition, no doubt helping to cement her win.

Also, check her interview on last night’s Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Cassadee says she grew up singing country music, and she wants to incorporate it into her music. Hm.

Maybe she can also do that brain surgery thing.

  • YankeeFan08

That certainly was not her best performance.  Maybe she was nervous.  I don’t care for that song at all.  Something more upbeat would have been better IMO.

Blah. I like her enough…but Country? Seriously? No.

    Worst. Vocalist. To. Win.A.Singing.Show.Ever.LOL.

As I mentioned in another thread, Cassadee was really pitchy, especially on the low notes. I think that she has a very limited range. A very unimpressive performance IMO. As for “incorporating” aspects of country music into her music, I always got the feeling that Cassadee was willing to be very malleable, so I’m not surprised.

don’t watch the Voice. Seeing her for the first time, and she’s not as bad as people say she is. Have you all intentionally forgotten how bad Lee DeWyze was? lol. She reminds me of Avril Lavigne and I like Avril.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1638805698 Jason Scott

Yea, b/c I recall on several occasions, while on the show, she said she wanted to go the totally pop/rock route…so, what’s changed?! Hmm…

  • girlygirltoo

TPTB were setting her up as a country pop artist all season. She sang multiple country songs on the show and she has talked about having Blake appear on her album. I know she claims she wants to do pop-rock, but I won’t be at all surprised if her album turns out to be more country-pop than pop-rock. I think she understands that she has a much better chance of being successful if she goes that route. And because she’s done so many country songs on the show, she at least has a chance of not being branded as someone who went that direction because there was no other real option for her (like a few other artists who have tried to go country have been accused of)

  • curly_yenta

Man, I couldn’t agree more. WTF? I know I’ve seen better singers at the local high school.. and I’m serious about that. The bar is being set so low now.  I don’t watch The Voice, so I just saw her for the first time on Leno last night – by accident, and man….. I was shocked at her lack of singing talent – banal, insipid, bland. I can only imagine how bad the losers were.

  • http://twitter.com/cheeseE1 EH

She actually sang this song really well on the Voice.  She’s probably just exhausted, or sings better in sparkly dresses or something.

I think her voice is generic enough to throw at different formats.  I’m sure she’ll record a duet with Blake for country, even if most of her album is “pop-rock” (which is code for “pop” based on what I’ve heard of her attempts to sing rock).

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1638805698 Jason Scott

Actually, you should seriously check out Amanda Brown. The BEST vocalist from the season.

  • alt28023

Man people here are really harsh on Cassadee. She did fine. How many years have you people been watching these singing competitions? Liking a person’s voice is subjective and in the end, there were people who were more willing to throw votes (and money apparently) Cassadee’s direction than any other singer, and that goes for every other winner of these singing shows. That being said she sings it better than Miranda, although I think pretty much every Miranda cover I’ve heard done on TV has been sung better than Miranda herself. See? That’s me subjectively not liking Miranda’s voice, and yet she’s a country star.

  • Trina

Have you all intentionally forgotten how bad Lee DeWyze was?

When a new “worst contestant ever” comes along the previous ones are always forgotten. Remember how P2 was the worst winner ever and would destroy the AI franchise? That was forgotten once he went on to become a multi-platinum artist.

I like Cassadee. I find her very likable which is important and can be more valuable when launching a career even more than having perfect vocals. And since The Voice so obviously wanted her to win IMO she’ll have a much better launch than Javier or Jermaine. Also, I really dont get the big deal if the girl has a pre-existing fanbase from her Hey Monday days. How often have reality show contestants flopped down the road because fans dropped them? So Cassadee has a bunch of loyal fans who stuck by her. Not a bad thing at all.

  • windmills

girlygirltoo: I think she understands that she has a much better chance of being successful if she goes that route.

Anybody who thinks this would be kidding themselves. There has been article after article written, including a recent Country Weekly cover story, about how damn near impossible it is to be a new woman in country music. Mike Dungan, now head of Universal Music Group Nashville, was quoted by Tennessean saying:

When Mike Dungan signed new artist Kelleigh Bannen to a Capitol Records Nashville record deal, he told her he would rather be “the guy who had to go put out the oil rig fire” than to try to make it in country music as a new female solo artist.
“I looked at her, someone I like very much, and I said, ‘You realize that you’ve chosen a path that is maybe the most difficult on the planet,’ ” recalled Dungan, who is now chairman and CEO of Universal Music Group Nashville.

There would be a pretty good-sized line of women who have actually been hard at work trying to win over country radio for at least a year, including people like Kelleigh Bannen, and Kristen Kelly. Not to mention Jana Kramer and Kacey Musgraves (who’s set up to have a big year), who have already seen some success at country radio, and Kelly, who’s a much bigger name trying to make some inroads. There’s also going to be Sheryl Crow next year making a play for country radio. I’m leaving a lot of women out, including Lauren who also has more of a track record at country radio.I haven’t even started talking about how Cassadee in no way, shape, or form sounds country. To be honest I think people saying she should go country now are totally misunderstanding why her pop versions of pop/country songs resonated. It wasn’t the genre, it was the big sweeping hooks and emotion.

IMO winners in this reality shows are being decided/manipulated by the producers. You don’t need to have the best vocals. I agree Amanda Brown has the best vocals for this season.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

No, that would be P2 and he seems to be doing fine.

Man, so Cassadee is the puppet every reality show wanted in a winner. LOL. Oh well, she can do what she wants on her next album. If she gets a second album.

  • Latin2

That really didn’t sound very good…maybe it will sound better on the recording.

That song sounds like another song…I just can’t put my finger on it.

I was shocked at her lack of singing talent – banal, insipid, bland. I can only imagine how bad the losers were.

If you watched “the losers” you would be impressed how much better singers they were. The fact is that Mark Burnett made the craziest and dirtiest manipulations ever to assure this girl would win. In his mind, she’s like the-most-marketable-thing-evah!

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/XDQP2Y46M5B3OHOKALDDGDHQCM Leandro

I think P2 isn’t a great singer, but he’s better than Lee. I think Cassade and Lee are on the same level, with a slight advantage to Lee.

I think they could do a country duo. The CassaLees or something.

  • irockhard

God forbid that the worst singer to ever win a singing competition be a girl! Gah!

  • irockhard

So basically she’s doomed either way. Too vanilla for pop rock and not authentic enough for country.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/XDQP2Y46M5B3OHOKALDDGDHQCM Leandro

Don’t you think that having Blake and Miranda as mentors and moguls would help her? Plus, she would do the pop-bland-country Taylor-Swift thing that appeals outside de country community.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/XDQP2Y46M5B3OHOKALDDGDHQCM Leandro

yep. I saw people saying if she didn’t win it would be because the “power of penis” and people were glad that she won just because she’s a woman. I was kinda speechless. This is feminism on a delirious scale. Plus, I don’t think either that a bad female singer winning a show is good for the image of women overall.

  • blackberryharvest

Blake and Miranda don’t have the power to make someone successful. The rest of the country community would probably laugh in their faces by them trying to make her country. She would make Taylor Swift look like Dolly Parton.

  • ptebwwong

Blake & Miranda can only do so much. For example, they both wrote a song for another country artist & actually tried promoting it. But it didn’t even make top 35 on the country charts. This was an artist that had previous big hits.

Blake & Miranda can be Cassadee’s mentors, but radio PD’s still need to play her. Radio recently plays very little talent show alums especially since there are so many shows now. Marketing & management is one of the keys to whether she can be a success. She also needs good songs.

Also, if she’s trying to go country it is a very hard time for female country artists currently. Basically, there is less than 7 female artists on the top 40 currently. Three of them are Taylor, Faith, & Carrie & one is from a tv show (Hayden from Nashville). All the rest aren’t big hits (top 30-40 on the charts). So if Cassadee is going country she’s already coming in with a disadvantage of being a female artist.

Just watching her perform, I can see she wasn’t 100% probably she didn’t get much rest after the show. Could have been better?

  • poipugirl

Great job, Cassadee!  I thought she is a deserving winner of The Voice!  I would’ve been happy with Terry also!

She has a really nice voice that can sing different genres and is really pretty!  I hope she is very successful.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

I think P2 is the worst vocalist who has ever won a reality singing contest. His poor attempts at Christmas songs this past month showed how weak he is vocally. He was extremely lucky to get a great song that worked well with his limited range and vocal stylings. Add in the once in a lifetime promo opportunity of the Olympics and you have a hit. Lee is a better overall vocalist, but he didn’t have the same good fortune as PP.

Cassadee is a much better vocalist than these two winners from AI. It will all come down to the type of music and single she gets, and more than anything, the amount of money and support she gets from a major record label.

Totally agree, although I don’t think that Lee is that much better than P2.

  • SullyD

I agree. As a woman, the reason why I’m “mad” at this whole penis era on idol is because it annoys me seeing talented women struggling to win over less talent (or even talentless) men.
However, this wasn’t the case on the voice. Both Nicholas and Terry could sing circles around Cassadee. To me, she was the most boring of the top 6, eventhough I don’t dislike her.

If a woman was going to win the voice, this woman should had been  Amanda.

  • SullyD

BTW, althought I’m not keen on her tone or style, I don’t think Cassadee is the worst winner on those competitions, not even close, lol.
She’s not even the worst “The Voice” winner. IMO, Jermaine was.

  • angiedb

It amazes me, every time I read comments here, the vast differences in opinion. It’s so intriguing to me! For the record, I am pretty indifferent to Cassadee. I’m fine with her winning, though I would have rather one of the boys had won.

  • http://twitter.com/cheeseE1 EH

I expect Cassadee to do well, unremarkable singing and all.  The Voice was planning on doing A&R for potential winners all the way through the competition and I think they’ll make good on their promise to get the right material out at the right time. (Didn’t Jermaine Paul release some sappy Father’s day dreck right after the show and then basically disappear?)  She’s never going to be a powerhouse singer, but she’s not horrible, she has some star quality, and obviously, she was the most popular contestant by an apparent landslide.  She probably had her album mostly finished before the show.

Melanie was probably my favorite of the girls but she’s not exactly a great singer and I wouldn’t have wanted her to win it.  Amanda would probably be a lock for the top 3 on Idol or X Factor, but The Voice makes a little more space for quirkiness.

Runner-up Terry told a Scottish paper that he has talks with Universal Records right after the holidays and some other “interesting offers,” so I suspect he’ll be signed before too long.  Did the whole top 4 end up getting signed last season?

  • 1rollbounce2

Well, she has good teeth, good complexion, she’s not overweight.  I see the brunette/brown hair thing as her biggest flaw.  But the brassy blonde thing wouldn’t look good on her.  Maybe some highlights or a crispy new ‘do?  The music’ll be mastered in the studio.   She’s good front cover magazine material man!

  • http://twitter.com/ItsMyT1me Lori

LOL at the “worst ever” comments… until the next reality singing competitor that is not the “best ever”

    Next?

  • Mariyas

Cassadee deserves her win and I believe she will be successful.
The worst singer to win is a toss up between Lee and Philip.
I actually think it’s P2 who from his audition alone I was already cringing with his interpretation of Thriller how forced he was singing it because his voice is just so limited trying to stretch it miserably.
But I like him as a person and he has charisma compared to Lee who has none.
