Casey James’ “Crying on a Suitcase” music video debuted on VEVO today. The Season 9 American Idol alum shows off some impressive acting chops in this story about how love can slip through your fingers if you don’t fight for it.

“This is the first opportunity I’ve had to ‘play a character’ in a video,” said Casey. “My focus is always the music, but it was a lot of fun working outside my comfort zone. I wanted to make sure that the small amount of acting would be believable, and I feel like it is. I’m very proud of the video, and I can’t wait for everyone to see it.”

“Crying On A Suitcase” is the second single from Casey’s self-titled debut album.

Nicely done and Casey looks gorgeous – always a plus.

Windmills, I’m feeling dense today.  Can you explain what looks like a discrepancy to me?  Twice in this thread you have said that COAS in on the cusp of breaking the t50, but in the Monday Morning Mediabase thread, I thought that COAS was on the cusp of t30?  I thought COAS had been released a while back and had been gradually climbing?  I also thought that videos (when they are done) are often released around the t30 stage, to give the song an added boost to climb further on the chart?

Sorry, I should have been more specific. My t50 comment was in reference to the Itunes country chart, where COAS is currently #69 (it was #79 this morning). You are right that COAS is on the cusp of Billboard t30 based on airplay, and it actually made it back into the MB t30 yesterday when recurrents were removed.

I bought CaseyJ’s CD, and yes, I am a very satisfied customer.  Liked all but three songs on the first listen, and after repeated listening, I like all but one.  (I wasn’t sure how well I would like a country CD from CaseyJ since I associated him with the blues and would have preferred to hear blues from him.  But yeah, I get it — it’s not exactly like there are blues radio stations out there.)

I’m not too concerned if COAS is around the t30 on the chart, but my eyebrows will be at my hairline if this song is just now about to crack t50.  (It will be nice when COAS is firmly within the t30 so that it retains spins from the countdown charts.)

I admit I haven’t been paying close attention to COAS — just keeping my eye on it.  But I would be shocked and VERY disappointed if the song were only now attaining t50.  I think COAS is the most country radio-friendly song on CaseyJ’s CD.  COAS sounds like it would blend in very well with the other country music being played on my local country radio stations, yet it is still distinctive enough to grab the listeners’ attention.  If this song doesn’t do well, I don’t know what would.  I am fully expecting CaseyJ to make some inroads on the country charts with COAS, so don’t make me cry!

Great video!  Casey looks great in the video; I like his hair a little shorter & especially when he has it in a pony.  Love the part at the end where he grabs he keys and presumably goes after the girl.

Great job!  This should sell a few downloads.

Can anyone tell me where LDCIAN peaked on the charts?  Thought it was around the t20 mark, give or take.  I’d like to see COAS do better.  (Not that where LDCIAN peaked was bad, just would like to see CaseyJ get more traction with COAS.)

LDCIAN peaked on #20 on Mediabase and #21 on Billboard. COAS is doing better so far then LDCIAN did it is moving quicker up the charts and selling better.

COAS did reach the top 30 two weeks ago, but he was squeezed out by the bigger stars like Eric Chruch and Toby Keith, at the same time Taylor Swift also released her song last week and she just flew up the charts. But Casey is now back again in the top 30 and he will not fall out again, by Sunday he should be around 28.

Thanks!  You really had me worried, Windmills!  I probably just didn’t read the thread carefully enough.

OK, that’s about what I thought.  Not a huge CaseyJ fan, in the sense that I don’t follow him closely, although he was my fav from AI 9.  I’d like to see him do well.  I’m really enjoying his CD and would like to see him get himself established.

(I actually like a lot of Idols but there’s not enough time in the day to follow everyone, so I just stick with my special snowflake and turn to MJs to find out how the rest are doing.  I have some idea of which posters follow which Idols, so I read those posts to keep up.)

Saw this video last week when it first was released by Sony.  Loved it then and love it even more now!  Perfect interpretation of the song.  And Casey, well he can now add actiing to his quiver of talents!  He’s so amazing.

One little point, where I read in an interview last week that Casey had an acting coach to help him — looks like his record label really believes in him and supports him if they are actually providing him with an acting coach.  The whole video is first class.

Interested in what song you still don’t like. Mine is Tough Love. That’s the only song on the album I just cannot get into.

I agree that Casey J does have a movie star quality about him.  He can’t help it. He’s just pretty.  I hope the vid will help move some units on the song.  It’s was a great single choice this time around.

    Thanks mj!

Mine is Drive – I tend t skip it in favor of the others.

I love the video and think Casey did a great job of portraying a guy torn over losing his love with her leaving him because of a mistake that he made.  Looks like he’s made up his mind to go and try to get her back! I thought the shadow of the airplane on the girls back was very clever!

Ditto, I don’t understand why Tough Love was chosen when there are way better songs like Bulletproof or Why I’m Feelin Blue. Hopefully these two are being considered on the next record.

The song from the album that I really dont like is Undone, that is a total skipper for me.

Huh! So interesting how our tastes differ.  The three songs I didn’t care for on first listen were “Drive,” “She’s Money,” and “Workin’ On It.”  But after listening to the CD a few more times, I came to like and appreciate “Drive” and “Workin’ On It.”  I don’t care for “She’s Money.”

“Drive” is a great album cut and would be a terrific concert song, but I don’t think many country radio stations would play it.  I know many of CaseyJ’s fans want it for a single, but it doesn’t sound remotely like anything I hear on country radio today.  At least not in my neck of the woods.  “Workin’ On It” has really grown on me — the humor and the positive “I think I can I think I can” attitude (another good concert song).  But something about “She’s Money” makes me cringe.  Not sure why.

After a number of listens, I pegged “Crying on a Suitcase” (COAS) and “Tough Love” as potential single material.  Yes, the “you & me against the world” theme in “Tough Love” has been done before, but wow, it fits well with other songs that  I hear on my local country radio stations.  I think it is the music that sells this song.  The hook isn’t especially strong, but with the music behind it, it’s an earworm.  So, I guess I like “Tough Love.”  :-P

“Undone” and “So Sweet” are songs that could’ve been singles if CaseyJ weren’t a new artist trying to break through the country radio glass ceiling.  If an established artist did them, they’d be hits.  (Of course, established artists can sing like Alvin and the Chipmunks and still have hits!)

I honestly believe that COAS represents Casey’s best shot at breaking through on country radio.  Of course, all of this is JMHO and I could be wrong.

(P.S.)  I saw a vid of CaseyJ singing “Bulletproof,” and I really liked that song, but mostly because it sounded bluesy.  And yes, I’m disappointed that it isn’t on the CD.  It could be that TPTB didn’t think it sounded country enough?

(P.S.S.)  Listening to “She’s Money” right now and I really do dislike it.

Thanks for sharing your opinion Happyhexer!

Yes, it is interesting how different songs appeals to different people.

I think Drive could make a decent single. But the live concert version is just 1000x better for me personally then the album version. In my opinion they have watered the song down by using an acoustic Dobro, for me it packs more of an punch on the electric guitar with slide. It is much faster and rocking in concert. And that is actually for me personally a general theme with a lot of the songs.

I like She Money, but again I like it more in concert because Casey plays it faster they slowed it down to much on the album for me.

Tough Love is like a Bon Jovi song to me, it is a bit of a guilty pleasure but I dont think it would make a good single, or it would ever be considered for a single.

Working On It is more of an Southern rock song, it could perhaps be a single. The rock angle is popular right now and I would like for Casey to also show more of his rocking side on country radio. The self improvement theme have been done before on country radio and it has been popular in the past, so who knows?

So Sweet might perhaps work as a winter single, I really like the album version but again Casey does a guitar solo at the end of this song live in concert that just places the song in a whole different category. But I get it, studio productions are not usually that long. I agree that it could perhaps be a hit if it was sung by a bigger star, and I feel the same about Miss Your Fire.

The song that I think would make a good single is The Good Life, I dont know why I just have a feeling it could a hit. Another ballad that I think could do well is Love The Way You Miss Me, people just really love that song. I think both of these songs are very catchy, and it is the same with COAS. I think you need catchy songs for radio.

A lot of people thought Bulletproof might have been an interesting single choice, it would have been something a bit different. It is unfortunate that it didn’t make the album.

HappyHex: I sincerely love CaseyJ, but I’m pretty critical with music I listen to. I find the lyrics of Tough Love seriously cheesy but I agree, its sound is pretty catchy. But at least we all like Workin’ On It, I’ve always been a fan of southern rock so if Sony will still push for a 3rd single, I don’t mind them picking WOI over Drive. I’m kinda neutral on She’s Money cos it sounds great live.

Back to COAS, what is your fave scene off the video? The part where Casey and video babe sneak on the truck makes me grin, brings me back to my old sappy puppy romance (not that I’m old or anything LOL).

  • Happyhexer

Great conversation about CaseyJ’s album. We can do it again on the next CaseyJ thread.
