Check out Carrie Underwood singing “So Small” with the PS22 choir on the season 4 American Idol winner’s “Blown Away” tour in Newark, NJ on December 1.

Idol’s current winner, Phillip Phillips, recently performed with the Staten Island based middle school choir to benefit Hurricane Sandy survivors.

Well… that didn’t work out the way it should, did it? It fell apart on the second verse when Carrie lost her place. The band seemed to have kept up with her, but the chorus just kept on going. She tried to get back but couldn’t. That’s too bad, because it would have sounded really well based on the last time they performed together. The whole time I was thinking, doesn’t the music teacher realize the chorus’ timing was off?

I think he did (and so did Carrie) but he had no choice because both the kids and the instrumental were on a prerecorded track. That’s the impression I got, anyway. I don’t know why Carrie’s crew couldn’t get PS22 hooked up on live mics but, there must have been some technical issue that prevented it. So, I think they prerecorded something in rehearsal (PS22 tweeted out a pic of them rehearsing). Carrie’s vocal is obviously live and the kids were also singing live (but you can’t hear them live).

It was a really sweet idea to include them even though the execution was off. Based on tweets the crowd loved it anyway, and I hope the kids had a great time.

Ah, prerecorded. You’re right, I don’t know why I didn’t think of that (too focused on Carrie’s on point vocals, maybe). Now that I rewatched it, the kids definitely are singing along with her but the vocals were on a different time. I guess technical difficulty sounds about right.
