performs onstage during ACM Presents: Girls' Night Out: Superstar Women of Country concert held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on April 4, 2011 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Carrie Underwood was honored a few weeks ago, along with Reba McEntire, Miranda Lambert, Martina McBride, Jennifer Nettles, The Judds and Loretta Lynn at the tribute special, ACM Presents Girls’ Night Out: Superstar Women of Country.

It aired tonight on CBS, so now we got more than an inferior audience video of Carrie’s powerful performance of “How Great Thou Art.”

Also, Gill honored Carrie with his own version of the song that started it all for Carrie, “Jesus Take the Wheel” before joining her onstage to accompany her on guitar.

All the women gathered at the end for a rousing “Coal Miner’s Daughter”, a rousing tribute to the legendary Loretta Lynn.

Watch the video after the jump.

Not only could Carrie Underwood sing the phonebook, she could get a number 1 hit with it..

Carrie is not just talented, she has a gift and she knows from whence it came. Her rendition of HGTA?. . . one word . . .anointed.

What an ambassador for AI! In all of the interviews I’ve seen, Carrie always credits her career to AI.

I watched Carrie last night on TV. There really are no words to described how beautiful and powerful her performance of How Great Thou Art was. It brought her peers to tears and to their feet. She really is something special and she sings with such heart and sincerity. American Idol has a gem in her.

Great example of not needing theatrics and vocal acrobatics to engage and move the listeners. Plus, the arrangement (with the musical interlude) helped with crescendo at the end.

OK, maybe I’m seeing things,or missed an announcement, but is Carrie pregnant? She looks like it in some of the shots. If so, congratulations!!! If not, well I wish Carrie the best, anyway!

Quick story. CU Bio stated that there was a little resentment (not paying her “dues”) in the CMI about CU getting attention just off of S4 AI (this from Sony head Joe Galante). Sony was releasing CU’s first cd “Some Hearts” in Nov 05 and Sony wanted CU to perform on the CMA’s (show on same day as release). CMA resisted but put CU in a 2 min. slot at last minute.

CU sang JTTW off SH cd. Mark Bright, her Sony producer, was in the audience. Bright stated that after CU performance, the A-listers and everyone else in industry audience just gasped. They could not believe that this “singing contest winner” was that good!

Carrie’s personal skills and sincere humility won the CMI over. In 2008 CU was made a GOO member (invited by Randy Travis, inducted by Garth Brooks, and Vince Gill joined CU in her induction song JTTW).

Final thing (I promise) Jay Demarcus from Rascal Flatts stated in CMT “Backstory” that RF credits CU’s performance on AI4 of “God Bless the Broken Road” for a boost in their popularity.

I’m not sure there will ever be another AI winner that will make as big an impact as CU.

We watched last night and Carrie was amazing. She basically blew every other woman on that show away.

I had suggested that Lauren return to her roots last week and sing “Coal Miner’s Daughter.” Alas, it was not to be :(

I don’t normally shed tears for even beautifully sung songs, but by the time I finished Carrie’s How Great Thou Art, they were streaming. I hardly realized it until thinking “wow where did those come from”.

“Jesus Take The Wheel” by Vince Gill was beautiful, too. I never liked it from Carrie (don’t hate me) because I thought it sounded hokey for some reason. But I loved Vince singing it. Maybe because it was done simply? IDK

merkureye, interesting stories. Thanks! I’ve always gotten the sense there has been some resentment directed at Carrie among the Country faithful because her success seemed to come so fast and so easy. Probably not as much anymore, but there may still be some of that. So it was rather touching to see that crowd jump to their feet last night before the song was even over. She’ll never be Loretta Lynn Country, but she has surely earned her rightful place by now.

    Dlynne says:
I love that the camera panned to Jennifer Nettles right after and Jennifer said, “What a voice!” Amen to that.

Carrie Underwood’s “How Great Thou Art” was amazing and I concur with everything said here about her. She is something special.

I watched the entire show and my favorite performance of the night was Jennifer Nettles and Ronnie Dunn covering one of my favorite Patty Griffin songs, “Let Him Fly.” I love Ronnie Dunn, but the song would have been better without him. Jennifer Nettles has a voice as big and amazing as Carrie’s. Patty Griffin is an amazing songwriter (and performer) – she wrote Crystal’s “moment” song from AI9, “Up the Mountain.”

I know this is an Idol blog, but that performance was so great for me and I am begging Sugarland to record “Let Him Fly.” Carrie’s “How Great Thou Art” was the perfect ending to a great showcase of the super star women of country music. Carrie proved to any doubters that she belongs in that group.

That was simply marvelous. She is incredibly gifted, sincere and talented, not to mention beautiful. Our little S4 winner is all growed up.

Final thing (I promise) Jay Demarcus from Rascal Flatts stated in CMT “Backstory” that RF credits CU’s performance on AI4 of “God Bless the Broken Road” for a boost in their popularity.

I hope a lot of current artists heard that or read about the comment – not just country artists, but artists of all genres. Having a song performed well on AI increases the popularity of the original – it seems to always happen.

mzbet: “Jesus Take The Wheel” by Vince Gill was beautiful, too.

ITA and you could really tell how much Carrie appreciated it too.

I enjoyed the show from start to finish and it was awesome seeing the supportive spirit the ladies of country have for each other. You could tell they were all really sincere that it meant a lot for them to be honored together.

PamReid: Jennifer Nettles has a voice as big and amazing as Carrie’s. Patty Griffin is an amazing songwriter (and performer) – she wrote Crystal’s “moment” song from AI9, “Up the Mountain.”

I agree. Jennifer’s incredible on this soulful stuff and there’s not near enough of it on Sugarland’s current album though there is a good Memphis Soul song called Shine The Light that’s the album closer. I’d love to hear Sugarland tackle Let Him Fly and songs in that style. With Sugarland you never quite know what they’ll do next.

There’s not a whole lot I can add to the comments about Carrie’s performance. It really touched me.

I taped this and watched it today. The whole special was very nice, some very good singing from everyone. Carrie’s performance felt very special, and I’m so glad I got to see it. She poured her whole heart into it. I also loved Vince Gill singing Jesus Take The Wheel, because I love Vince Gill!

Does anyone have an MP3 rip of Carries’ HGTA? Omgz it’s amazing… I want it..

  • TylerWV

Thanks for the videos mj, I missed the show. I loved Carries HGTA. If you didnt see her perform it on the GAC special where they recorded a live gospel album at the Opry, go to youtube and search for Carrie and HGTA. She, in effect, gave a testimony while singing that song. Even more powerful then her rendition last night, and thats saying something. While promoting the album on GAC next day, host Nan said Carrie sang her heart and soul out, and that she did.

  • sma11ie

Is it weird that Carrie was the only one without a solo in the Loretta Lynn number? I bought Carrie’s HGTA on iTunes. Lovin it. That and Temporary Home are on my Carrie makes me cry playlist :)

  • Lov3ly

Wow… very touching performance of HGTA from Ms. Carrie Underwood-Fisher. I just watched on YT but can’t help I was in tears. Seems she stole both the ACM show and the ACM GNO Show. No doubt that she won EOTY twice, Carrie know how to stole the show – she can ‘rock the house’ and ‘bring the house down’ :)

    Wow…

I’ll never criticize Carrie for her performance skills again after HGTA.

    Just…wow.
