Carrie Underwood performed her hit country single, “Cowboy Casanova” on the Late Show with David Letterman Monday night.

And, she had the honor of kicking off Country Music Week at the Late Show. Yipee!

  • CRB

I still don’t care for this song.

  • cookcricket

I watched on Letterman. She looked great and sounded really good!

CRB, there are parts I like and parts I don’t, but she sounded great!

  • hwc

You would think that they could upgrade the Stepford circuit boards to include the new chips with dance capability. It’s almost hard to believe that she is still that stiff after all these years.

  • yeahyeahsure

That is one short dress! Love her legs!

  • Mtlfan

Awesome voice but don’t like much that song.
Nice dress .. nice boots… together = hmm wouldn’t be my pick

  • dreyraglin

Have to agree with hwc on the stiff part. I wanted Carrie to a least do a bit of struttin on the stage while performing this song but she only just grooved a little in place. With a high energy song like this she can really do a lot with but she kind played it safe. I like Carrie but just not a fan of country music and this happens to be the first song that I like of her’s when I first heard it. Well this and “Last Name”. I hope Carrie brings it to the AMA’s like she did at the Grammy’s this year and lets loose. Last Name at the Grammy’s had to be her best post-idol performance in terms of stage presence IMO.

Carrie is so pretty, but yeah I agree with HWC. I expected her to work the stage with this number. Her vocals are spot on though, and perhaps shes putting more life into her performance for the AMAs.

I thought it was a great combo, but I think she was afraid to move around too much in the dress.

  • mandabutter

I loved it!! Rock on Carrie. Just got her full album ‘Play On’ from iTunes. I’m sure i’ll be humming these in my sleep.

I loved her outfit as well. To me, Carrie can do no wrong.

  • Dlynne

She’s gorgeous. Her voice is gorgeous. And the song is growing on me.

  • Starr

While I am not a fan of Carrie’s, I gotta say that she is really gorgeous. She looks like a real-life Barbie doll.

  • gingerly

I freaking hate short dresses/skirts with boots. It’s just never going to work for me. That being said, she’s beautiful and can sing. I’m unconcerned that she doesn’t dance or strut all over the stage. It might take away from her singing which works so well for me.

Oh and I might be just a bit in love with her fiddle player. That’s nothing new though, I always seem to fall in love with the fiddle player…

  • mandabutter

Starr — her music is just as beautiful as she is. But, I get it, country isn’t for everyone…. And I say that with complete and total respect. :)

  • BlankSlate

I ask in all sincerity: what makes THIS a country song? Because it’s got the word “cowboy” in it?

There’s no story in this song. No hook.

If she didn’t look like a Barbie Doll in high-heeled boots, I don’t think her voice would make her the “country star” she is. Just my opinion..

    .. which obviously matters little vs the 10 million people Dave said that have bought her albums. Somebody out there likes her! :}

  • Starr

@mandabutter: It’s not that it’s country. Just the songs she sing don’t appeal to me. This “Cowboy Casanova” song reminds me of Shania Twain’s “That Don’t Impress Me Much”.

I’ll admit that I don’t listen to a lot of country music, but I don’t judge a song just because it’s country. I like Keith Urban – does he count?

  • suenigma

I’m not a country fan by any means, but I really love Carrie’s voice, attitude and presence. And her product is growing on me. I think that this is a great song – very hooky IMO. I get a kick out of FYE, but I actually prefer this song.

  • Tess

Oh, Carrie. Such a beautiful voice, and such a gorgeous package, and so “just there”. If someone could take Kelly’s personality, intermingle the two voices, use Carrie’s looks…what a TRUE star we would have. As it is we have Kelly who has it all except the “look” (and I am not talking beauty or her weight just her lack of “style”) and then we have the utter Barbie doll in Carrie who just needs a personality and some Kelly umph. Oh well, at least they both sound great through my speakers.

  • auntieaimee

Ok, the dancing was awkward, but that vocal was flawless and she is drop dead gorgeous.

  • amiroamor

Yeah Tess, unfortunately nobody is perfect. lol

  • Sunshinegirl

It is surprising because she has gotten much better on stage presence most times I’ve seen her perform. This particular one though was a like a huge step backwards in terms of presence. Hmmm…

  • Chicagolaw

Not crazy about the song. But, then, I’m not a country music fan. She does have a very nice voice, though.

  • Garnetstar

Caught this last night while flipping channels. Not a fan of country music, not a fan of Carrie. But she has a great voice. I mean amazing. She could probably move more towards pop/rock and it would be an interesting test. I heard she likes rock music so maybe she could do an experimental album and see if it sells. Anyway, every time I have seen her on awards shows she has been really good and I go “oh yea, Carrie, she’s good” and I never end up buying music from her, but I always come away impressed.

  • MSUmom

We’re talking about Letterman here, not a concert stage. Her movements were appropriate for the venue. She was amazing. That was a killer performance with flawless vocals.

  • cmc25

She is gorgeous. Lovely voice. I don’t like the song, it does’nt sound country. Movement is both awkward and subdued.
She should try other genre to improve her chance of international recognition.
    Just my humble opinion.

  • BootStar

Not a big fan of the song, but I thought she sounded fabulous and looked great from the neck up. But what the frak was she wearing? It looked like she stole the top half of her mom’s favorite New Year’s Eve ensemble and paired it with hooker boots.

Carrie is gorgeous and usually looks so lovely but, every once in a while, it’s like she forgot to finish getting dressed, and I spend the entire performance dreading that we’re going to get an inadvertent crotch shot.

  • maturin

The song is super fun. I tend to fall for something more like So Small with some weight to it, but this is a fun juke box and a beer number.

I’m going to be that –aside from the fact you and she’d get tired if everything were the same texture–she’s got a target going. The Sassy Boots songs like Last Name, Cowboy Casanova and Before He Cheats help bring in the guys as well as girls. Also let guys give a reason for buying her records without admitting they weep in their trucks to I Know You Won’t.

  • windmills

“I ask in all sincerity: what makes THIS a country song? Because it’s got the word ‘cowboy’ in it?”

The production may owe more to Def Leppard than country but the actual tune has a honky tonk line dancing feel to it.

Her concert versions of this have been more lively but I still enjoyed the performance.

  • marg

She’s a country sweetie! Maturin, I agree with you on the juke box/beer number thing! Keep it going Carrie……

  • larc

I ask in all sincerity: what makes THIS a country song? Because it’s got the word ‘cowboy’ in it?

The song itself could be Country, but the heavy-sounding instrumentation used here is no more Country than if a Bach chamber music group had accompanied Carrie.

A lot of so-called Country these days is Country in name only. Much of it totally lacks authentic ingredients for the genre.

  • sunchick

To be fair, Letterman’s stage is TINY. I don’t often see his musical guests move around much. Carrie was aight, but I was watching her fiddle player. He’s awesome (and hot.) Tbh, I actually like this song better than Before He Cheats, but I’m not much of a country music person, so…

looked great from the neck up.

Heh, actually it was the sleeves that bugged me. Or whatever those scarfy things were hanging off her shoulders. I wanted to take a scissor and snip them off. Otherwise, the super short dress paired with the superhero slash hooker knee to thigh high boots is pretty on trend.

  • leome

LOL Why are all your comments so worth quoting?

That was a great vocal performance. It doesn’t sound like an easy song to sing, but she killed it.

  • sma11ie

I like Carrie. She sounds great as always, and while I don’t always love her style, I think she looks fine there. She’s no dancer, but it wasn’t necessary for the Letterman stage.

Also let guys give a reason for buying her records without admitting they weep in their trucks to I Know You Won’t.

So what does it say about David Cook that he openly admits to loving songs like I Know You Won’t? Haha, then again, this is the guy who also admits to loving sappy/weepy Sarah McLachlan songs, so I’m pretty sure there’s no surprise there =P. (For the record, I like Sarah McLachlan heh).

  • amiroamor

Will we get to watch her appearance at the GMA, mj ? :)

  • SashaB

Wow! Carrie sounds incredible in that clip. Totally nailed that song. Good for her. This, indeed, is Carrie Underwood week. The other Idols should just watch her as she goes. Heh. Go Carrie.

  • jack5791

INCREDIBLE! This is going to be a week of awesome things from Carrie. I love this side of Carrie, and she performs it really well. Other Idol’s, TAKE NOTES. This is how it is done.

  • LaurelG

    She sounded fantastic. Love her.

  • Reflections On Life

A great live vocal performance. She really comes across as having an ethical earnestness to give her audience a top-notch vocal delivery. I like that attitude about her, her commitment to the song, the vocals, and us.

ITA that CC deserves a little walking-with-attitude around the stage, but I just don’t think that’s Carrie’s thing, and frankly I’m ok that. Does every singer have to be a dancer too? Many country singers just stand still or sit on a stool.

I spend the entire performance dreading that we’re going to get an inadvertent crotch shot.

Don’t worry. She’s old-school. She most likely has tap pants on underneath all those mini-dresses she wears. She isn’t gonna let you see anything she doesn’t want you to.

She seems like she’s really reaching, even straining, to hit those notes with all the belting power she has. If she wants to be a singer with a long career, she’ll need to pack her live shows with songs that don’t tax her vocal chords so much. (i.e. look at what’s happened to mariah carey’s voice).

  • TwigLA

Love Carrie and loved the performance … and I really enjoy this song.

I find it endearing that with all her success and how polished she’s become, she’s maintained that ‘washing machine agitator’ dance move when she sings.
