Ellen is on now. Carly just finished. My ears are ringing. I did not expect that last screaming part. I guess I should have, but I didn’t. This week I will only have to worry about Syesha screaming at me. Thank goodness.

  • weelassie

she had a contract but did she get the 2 million or was it used by the company to promote it? Can’t say I ever saw it promoted. If the money did not go to her directly-then she didn’t get a 2 million dollar contract-the company used it to produce and promote. does anyone know if it went to her or was used by MCA? If i have a contract for 100,00 but i only get 10,000 then that is all I received. So did SHE have a huge record deal or was it the companies money spent to produce and promote?

  • pifcat

Smear information sabotaged Carly from the beginning. Dark cynical people prefer a target to a hero. It didn’t matter that the truth was available it only mattered that they had someone to hate. You can read this ignorance in the above comments and littered on the web. It’s so unfortunate for this country and for immigrants that make up America. God Bless America? Yes this is only a talent, excuse me, popularity contest but it clearly demonstrates we have not learned much from all the wars we fought and what this country stands for.

It went down like this: we can’t have foreigners (or new immigrants) take our rightful American places and jobs, the record industry recognized her talent and miss-managed millions so you must take the blame and give up your right to have that incredible talent rediscovered, and furthermore large tattoos scare the god fearing children of America. Yes this is the land of opportunity but only for Americans. Carly left her country as a child to chase a dream, worked hard, failed, worked more, started a business, competed at a high level with her best skills, but we say Carly this is “not” the American way…

  • jpfan

Carly finished 6th on American Idol just like all American cutie Kellie Pickler. That’s actually a pretty decent finish and she did better than about 100,000 other people (including people born here and other immigrants, I’m sure.)

  • baxter

Whether she came to the country in a UFO or was born here, makes no difference to me. Don’t like her personality and the air of desperation that hangs over her head like a black cloud. Her singing boared on screaming in the high end and the song choices left me scratching my head.

This interview only made my feeligns about her even stronger.

  • Lisa

pifcat, I sure hope you were not referring to me with that *ignorance*.

I have nothing at all against Carly. I have bought some of her iTunes, the ones I personally enjoy. No I did not vote for her because all of my votes go to DC & MJ/JC were my second favorites. If those 3 were to go and Carly had still been on, my votes then would have gone to her.

As far as the MCA contract/promotion whatever. My point in stating what I said was because she referred to her *deal* as the same as the others when in fact it was not. I don’t know about the others, but DC did not have that kind of backing. For her to say that was wrong. She could have as easily said *Yes I did have a deal, but it just fell through* and not have drug the others into it.

    She had met Mariah previously.

  • dollypintn

Here is the challenge- is there a record label that wants to put the money into her and does she have a committed following or just a group of fans that can vote a bunch of times in a row?

To me, she doesn’t have the rabid fan base that David and David do- those folks are going nuts on iTunes for their music. Personally, I haven’t bought anything of hers b/c I was never in like of her. I enjoy Brooke but haven’t bought her music either.

    Just saying..

Lisa – Thank you. I didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know who made the shirt, but I thought it was a great gag! Because Simon is fickle that way. It was probably THE highlight of the night, as far as reality tv goes. I laughed my head off – WITH Carly, not AT her.

weelassie à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ I think it was a $2 million project, in that they spent that money recording, pressing the disks, and promoting airplay, etc. Carly was probably paid something also.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

I didn’t hate Carly, but in my opinion she made it hard to like her.

From the beginning she seemed too self-involved to really connect. Now, she may very well be a lovely girl in her personal life–I’m just talking about how she came across on the show.

She never had a musical identity. Like I said in my review, she was a cipher with a big voice. And as far as the quality of that voice–she definitely can sing, but she often didn’t use it to her best advantage. I really loved her lower tones, but she insisted on pushing the limit of her upper register where she often sounded screechy and strained.

She couldn’t relax, her performances were often stressful to watch, because she appeared a little desperate and wound up.

Oh, while I wouldn’t call her a liar, she had the tendency to dissemble a little, I think.

  • abbysee

MJ, your take is a more balanced one. I agree with that she never did relax enough to connect. The air of desperation was palpable and uneasy to watch. In the end though I think she had so many things against her, more than other contestants for sure. There was an element of ‘did MJ and Carly have visas and why did they audition when they weren’t American’, etc. The record deal didn’t help, even though I think people have this idea that the promotional budget went into her pocket, when if anything she probably wound up owing them, recoupables and all that. Yet in still she got a chance to strut her stuff for millions and I bet she is going to be one of the ones getting some serious attention during the tour. I wish her alot of luck.

  • judy

MJ…….your take on Carly is exactly what I would have said only not as nicely since she irritated the hell out of me!! She left at 6th place – not bad since I wanted her gone at the top 24!!

I think she walked in there expecting to blow everyone away and win the show easily. But, she was schreechy, whined and complained and looked like she wanted to kill someone when she sang until….. she turned into “nice” Carly. By the time she decided to become happy person, it was way too late to win over the fans and stay in the game. She just didn’t get the job done, period. It wasn’t because she was from Ireland, had tattoos or had a record contract.

And there she is on Ellen still “stretching” the truth and whining. wah, wah, poor Carly.

so I ask myself, why did I watch that video?? Silly me, I thought maybe she would irritate me less.

  • oohchile

I’ve done a bit of reading about Carly’s much-maligned deal, and it sounds like the whole thing was a botch job from the beginning.

They signed her when she was Archuleta’s age because they wanted to make her into their new Britney Spears and tried to force that role on her with bubblegummy pop songs. The songs were so crappy that focus groups hated them, so they rerecorded the album and the songs *still* sucked. Not Carly, the songs they had her sing.

Instead of getting her any meaningful exposure, they threw their promotion budget at the weirdest crap imaginable… money just whizzing down the drain and accomplishing nothing. As for the 2.2 million they spent promoting the album… had anyone here ever heard of “Carly Hennessey” before American Idol? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Records don’t sell if no one knows they are in the stores to be bought.

And Carly’s in an unenviable position now. She can’t defend herself without accusing her former music industry handlers of mismanagement and ineptitude. Either she *doesn’t* accuse them, and looks like a plant and a flop, or she does and watches industry doors slam shut across the board. So she does what she’s doing… just tries to wipe that off her slate and start over as much as she can.

So she does what sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s doingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ just tries to wipe that off her slate and start over as much as she can.

If wiping the slate clean is what she’s doing, she shouldn’t try doing it by telling out and out lies that are checkable. September 12, 2001 release date? Company went *poof*?

Just say yes, I had a deal and as these things can go, it didn’t work out. I didn’t give up on my dream and AI seemed the best way I could try again. Downplay it…….don’t lie. I’m more than willing to give someone a second chance, as are most people, but not if we feel we’re being duped and lied to.

  • larrylegend

Bobbi, as I’m sure you know, albums are released to various media to review before they are released to the public. It’s quite plausible that the album was given to the media on the September 12 date, especially in light of the release party that was held for her on that date. That’s certainly conjecture, but not a stretch, so calling her a liar on that is jumping the gun a bit, in my estimation.

Further, MCA DID fold – many of its artists were re-assigned to various Geffen labels, but other “assets” like Carly were dropped with the reorganization. It’s a pretty common practice, be it in the music industry or any other corporate reorg. Again, calling her a liar on this – another mischaracterization.

  • StevenD

I actually think that Carly will defiantly be signed once the show is over with and probably will do quite well as a recording artist now. I also think that the point of her being on American Idol wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t necessary to win the show (sure that might have been at first) but more the purpose of her being on was to get the exposure that she didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t really have before the show started. She has a lot of things that record executives are always looking for first sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a good singer who some like myself think is a great singer with a flexible voice that can easily adapt to many genres so songwriters shouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have a problem crafting songs for her to put over. Second sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s got a rocker girl image that can put over a ballad and a rock song with a strong voice something that Idol doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t really have at the moment. It seems like with Kelly Clarkson going more her own route and being her own artist Idol is going to want someone they can choose their songs for them and craft their own type of singer and Carly fits that bill better then the other à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“rockerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ types that theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve tried to introduce on the show.

I think YOU Rock Carly!! I was really sad to see you leave AI but you can get on with your career. You made the show much more enjoyable and I think your downloads are amazing. I look forward to your new music coming out! Have fun and Enjoy life!
