David Archuleta and Kathy Griffin backstage at the Bonnie Hunt Show. The picture is currently Kathy’s My Space photo. Heh.

I’m not doing the whole defend someone thing because I think it’s absurd, but, Clay really did get slammed unmercifully for quite a long time, and it was ridiculously ugly, still is, in some quarters; yet I felt he handled it with grace, dignity, some snark, and humor, but ya know? After a an ungodly good while of people wanting to know your intimate private life details, and the lengths they went to? Yep, I guess defensive could present itself. To me, it’s irrelevant whether the person IS or IS NOT the “perceived” impression (‘nother issue..stereotypes…hates ‘em); it’s the question being asked itself. Over the line…for anyone. I guess being in the public eye makes some media peeps think nothing is off limits but it truly is. But that’s a whole ‘nother discussion.:-)

As to David, I hope he’s left alone, but I doubt that will happen. But with a good core group of loyal support in his private circle, and his seemingly sunny nature, hopefully he’ll be just fine. It’s a tough business and getting uglier by the day. Damn shame, really.

You guys made me laugh so hard!

As far as the things people say about David and how he chooses to react- he is an incredible example of kindness, forgiveness, and grace in the face of ugliness. I am sure Kathy will continue to joke about him as she did on Bonnie Hunt’s show when she said he had a huge posse and they have a tight leash on him, but I would hope she now has a ton of respect for him as a person after meeting him.

I too have seen it over and over how he just brushes off criticism (“that’s too bad”) and wins people over with his kindness and sincerity. Even Jack from the JHOP radio station who sponsored the Sacramento Jingle Ball has said some not kind things about David. You could tell in that interview at the Del Taco that day that he has tremendous respect and awe for David. I wrote him an e-mail telling him thanks for inviting David to sing at the Jingle Ball. He wrote me back and said:

“It is our pleasure to have someone like David to Nor-Cal. He is truly one of the nicest/down to earth artists I’ve ever encountered and should be around for a long time. Have a great week and write anytime.”

Workdog- David seems to accept the nastiness and criticism as part of the business- way better than I could, so I think he will be fine.

  • jpfan

I think Archie being a teen will really cut back on a lot of the Clay Aiken snark. Plus he looks even younger than his years. He handled the Constantine comments quite well and is much more tough minded that people might expect. And he’s a very nice kid who seems to win people over. For example, Kathy Griffin.

I know some people compared him to Clay Aiken during his season but Archie’s musical tastes are much more current. He really fits in very well with current radio artists so comparing them musically doesn’t make much sense (if it ever did).

  • Irina

Kathy Griffin is famous for being nice to your face and sticking knives in your back after the fact. I can’t believe I’m sticking up for Clay but he was always a good sport and never said a bad word to her or about her. If you think that being nice to Kathy makes a difference, well just remember that she is always looking for new material for her act. I’m scared for David because she is setting him up the same way she set up Clay. I have to wonder too, have any of the ones that peg Clay’s music as this or that ever listened to his new album? It is very contemporary and with any label support he would have fit in just fine on pop radio.

I understand completely because I live in Utah and many kids here take things much more slowly.

Actually I learned recently that Mormons kids aren ´t allow to date until they are 16:

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¢ Following guidelines gives us security and brings us happiness.

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¢ Proper dating includes waiting until the appropriate age.

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¢ There is a higher rate of inappropriate physical relationships when dating begins too early.

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¢ Waiting to date allows time to mature mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

One of my coworkers told me that… and if you see it that way is not that weird that Archie hasn ´t ever being in a date, after all, he has pass an entire year in a show very sheltered,at least you count going out to eat with KLC a date, and before that he was 16 and he is really shy so is not that weird…

And beside according to their religion:

After turning 16, it is best to date in groups and avoid pairing off with just one partner. Take it easy. Enjoy your friendships before moving into serious dating relationships. Dating is sort of a à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“trial runà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ for selecting a marriage partner, so you should date the kinds of people you would consider marrying.

Hope this help to understend Archie best…

  • LK08

Actually David has been on a number of dates, paired off but in groups. Even at 16, they go on group dates like that, usually until college or often until after they go on a mission.

As far an not being allowed to single date- it is advised and most parents do help their kids abide by that.

  • hypertwink

I honestly donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get why they say things about David anyway, other than the fact that he has not had a girlfriend

Almost every celebrity has had Teh Gay factored in somehow, from Lance Bass even before Nsync broke up to Tom Cruise, from the Gossip Guys/Gays to even Jared and Jensen from Supernatural, who live in the same house. Any “evidence” will be put forth to back up the claim…(although I totally believe in TC’s non-hetero-ness).

Kathy Griffin is famous for being nice to your face and sticking knives in your back after the fact.

  • ozarka

Every LDS youth is given a booklet titled For the Strength of Youth.
In the chapter on dating, this is what it states…

Date only those who have high standards and in whose company you can maintain your standards. A young man and a young woman on a date are responsible to help each other maintain their standards and to protect each otherà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s honor and virtue. You must honor the sanctity of the priesthood and of womanhood.

Do not date until you are at least 16 years old. Dating before then can lead to immorality, limit the number of other young people you meet, and deprive you of experiences that will help you choose an eternal partner.

Not all teenagers need to date or even want to. Many young people do not date during their teen years because they are not yet interested, do not have opportunities, or simply want to delay forming serious relationships. However, good friendships can and should be developed at every age.

When you begin dating, go in groups or on double dates. Avoid going on frequent dates with the same person. Make sure your parents meet those you date. You may want to invite your dates to activities with your family. Plan dating activities that are positive and inexpensive and that will help you get to know each other. Do things that will help you and your companions maintain your self-respect and remain close to the Spirit of the Lord.
