This video was just posted in the Headlines thread. So You Think You Can Dance is airing in Canada right now, and a couple, Nico and Allie performed a routine to David Cook’s “Permanent”.

It’s beautiful!

Watch the video, after the JUMP…

  • Mia

Moving, stunning. What a day for David Cook !

  • Jlyn

OK as I was posting this in the Headlines thread MJ posted it up front.

Wow, The performance to Permanent was lovely. Talk about quick though – a non-released song off of a two week old album? The choreographer must have really like it. It does break down nicely into a 90 sec. piece. I thought we would see Lie used as a waltz first on the US show, but maybe some other country will beat them. (There are many versions of this show, arenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t there?)

Wow, The performance to Permanent was lovely. Talk about quick though – a non-released song off of a two week old album?

That is amazing how quickly Permanent was chosen…

I wonder what that means to Cook (other than the obvious compliment to have his song used on the show)? They have to get permission and pay for using the song > I wonder what sort of money David gets since he wrote (co-wrote) Permanent.

  • CathyMK

I’m usually not a dance person, but this was just so powerful. The dance moves completely fit the song. So moving and stunning. (And good exposure for David up North!)

  • mac

The best part was at the end when David sings the words “I’m Permanent” and he lifts her into the air. Simply stunning.

  • Trina

Judges comments. Very powerful. That judge was right when he said even if you took the music away you would see the story. Is there a Canadian SYTYCD tour? If so what are the odds this routine would be part of it?

  • Jabkmc

    Gorgeous!

  • http://myspace.com/saltwatercures pj

Very nice. Just underscores how much DWTS sucks compared to the SYTYCD franchise.

  • elisad

    LOL, exactly…

Is there a Canadian SYTYCD tour? If so what are the odds this routine would be part of it?

    Yes, and extremely possible.

  • FolkFan

That was gorgeous, wasn’t it? And the edit of the song that they used was really well done—if you didn’t know the song, you might not be able to tell where they spliced it.

  • AInoob

What a moving performance. I adore that song so it was lovely seeing it communicated through dance.

  • GEEK4VOCAB

Oh my god that was so beautiful.
That song is amazing and always always always makes me cry.

  • sma11ie

Wow, just wow. Perfect use of the song. I wished more people would’ve seen this. Thanks for bringing over the judging comments, Trina, but I have to say, heh, I could barely understand what that last judge was saying. I appreciated that two judges were moved to tears, but straining to figure out what he was saying kinda ruined the moment for me.

  • lovegoodmusic

sma11ie: The dance at 3:15 on the video and John Marc (spelling?) is the last judge 7:06 on the video that talks about the lyrics and the dance. And talks about how so many people that may have this i.e. meaning some sort of disease.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9N6nEY0jVo

Permanent by David Cook is a very powerful song. And it brought me to tears all over again when the last judge openly wept because of the lyrics and the dance.

Thank you so much for sharing this MJ.

  • Jolene

    Wow, that was powerful.

I wasn’t expecting an unreleased song to be used so soon. Is that common?
The dance fit it beautifully, I hope David gets to see this, I can imagine some waterworks going.

They have to get permission and pay for using the song > I wonder what sort of money David gets since he wrote (co-wrote) Permanent.

Interesting point. I hadn’t thought about that. So if they use it on tour he’d be making money off every show? Pays to write your own songs…

  • sunchick

:glurps_tb: I think I have something in my eye….I blame Canada. And David Cook.

Very moving interpretation. :glurps_tb: I actually was hoping that Mia might use this song next season for a contemporary piece. I am so happy to have something to replace this mental image now. (Click at your own risk.) :gulp_ee:

  • ShariG

Oh my goodness that was so beautiful. That really is the only word. Their dance was just lovely. So full of emotion and intensity. I love the song. It is one of several on the CD that demonstrates the beauty of David’s voice. It is still very hard to listen to that song without getting choked up because you can feel the pain and the frustration, but primarily it is the love underlying it all that just comes shining through. These dancers represented all of that. Thank you so much for sharing it.

  • Squirrelly

I hope somehow this dance and song can be published throughout the US so all Americans can see just how rare a talent David Cook is. This song, Permanent, is a masterpiece and full of emotion. So many of us have gone through periods in our life where we can identify with losing a loved one, and I find the song comforting (although I cry like a baby every time I hear it). Somehow, our entertainment shows should let everyone see this dance. Is there anyway for this to be done? Everyone needs to hear this song and see this dance. It’s very moving. I’m at work and watched it and I was hoping the whole time that no one walked in to my office and see me bawling my eyes out! David Cook needs to be recognized for his accomplishments on this new CD!

  • dance2thebeat

That’s too bad that you had so much trouble understanding Jean-Marc and that your frustration ruined the moment for you. In our (bilingual) country of Canada, we have people who speak more than 1 language and we celebrate that fact.

  • psnax

Gah – I can’t view the video at work so I have to wait until I get home at 7pm (!) to view it.

I really love “Permanent” and can only imagine how emotive dancing to it would be. To me, this is a sign that, regardless of how many units he sells, DC is destined to be hugely successful. This is now the third time a song he has sung/written/both has been chosen as a soundtrack to accompany and enhance the meaning of an event (SYTYCD USA, Olympics and SYTYCD Canada) and in doing so exposing him to a wider audience than he may otherwise reach both in terms of potential record buyers and others in the industry who may also wish to use his music as a soundtrack for their project. I don’t think I’m explaining this very well!! YMMV, but to me, getting recognition such as this is a great indicator of success.

  • May

I am so happy to have something to replace this mental image now. (Click at your own risk.)

    You and me both Sunchick!

Squirrelly I totally understand how you feel. I know that Permanent is very personal to David, but it’s so beautiful and touching that I wish everyone could hear it. It is truly unique. That dance performance was incredible.

  • gingerly

That was amazing. Such a powerful song…such a powerful dance. I think it’s fitting the song was co-written by Canadians. The choreography was beautiful and the dancers brilliant.

  • Suzanne

I wonder if the choreographer has been waiting for David Cook’s album to be released. Great for David!

Re: the dance–very powerful but I’m undecided if the “I’m pregnant” move at the end was a cheap stakes-raiser for the story of the dance or a good idea to explain to the audience why the dance was so intense. I guess I’m going with cheap move. Fear of abandonment can be plenty intense without a pregnancy. And I didn’t think the pregnancy was subtle or ambiguous at all right at the end there.

But I’m no connoisseur of dance. Just what I thought at the end there.

  • Dr. Tracey

    That was beautiful.
Too bad the US doesn’t air the Canadian versions of SYTYCD and Idol.

  • sma11ie

In our (bilingual) country of Canada, we have people who speak more than 1 language and we celebrate that fact.

Ooh, sorry if I offended you or the Canadian-French. I speak 3 languages and celebrate that fact myself heh. I wasn’t trying to make fun of his accent or anything– just that I was really moved by the performance, but straining to figure out what that Jean-Marc guy was trying to express snapped me out of my own reaction. No biggie, cuz it’s just me, and I’ll just keep enjoying the version sansjudging comments ;) .

  • elisad

There is hope. *cough* Sometimes the US version borrows ideas from others.

  • primeminister

Thanks for the link, Trina. Watching it with the intro (it’s about a soldier caught between love and duty) and the judges comments made it all the more moving.

  • leome

That was beautiful. Both dancers did a fantastic job, and the song helped to set the mood.
    I liked the interpretation.

  • gingerly

There is hope. *cough* Sometimes the US version borrows ideas from others.

Could it be that Jean-Marc choreographed it once and had two different countries dance to it?

  • canadiandcfan

It was beautiful. I really hope we get the chance to see them perform that on the tour, it’ll make it completely worth it :)

I hope Nico wins :) Vas-y Nico!! On est tellement fier de toi!

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/iamthepurplewalrus purplesmile

I read the comments before viewing the video and I must say that while I agree the dance was good, I didn’t think it was as powerful as the song is. That song made me tear up and put a lump in my throat (like it always does every time I listen to it).

  • elisad

Could it be that Jean-Marc choreographed it once and had two different countries dance to it?

Nah they’re not by the same choreographer, and have different choreographies. Just very similar production-wise, the song, the costumes, the lighting, the lack of shoes…

  • mhann

I believe the pregnancy adds to his permanence. No matter what happens to him a part of him will still be with her.

I’m actually one of those people the one judge was talking about. I found out I was pregnant with my first child a week before my husband left to go to the to the first gulf war. Fortunately he made it back ok. This was very real for me and I admit I cried like a baby.

  • gingerly

They borrowed a whole lot then…

  • dance2thebeat

Thanks for clarifying. I have heard Jean-Marc criticized and made fun of for his accent, so I was sensitive.
I do admit that some of his comments, in whatever language, can be corny LOL but I appreciate the feelings he expresses.

  • spanishfan

There are some moments which are beyond words and some songs which evoke hair tingling feelings and this song and this singer and the dance too an example of these precious moments.

  • dance2thebeat

This dance reminded me more of the Hip Hop routine by Napolean & Tabitha that Joshua & Katee did (to No Air!) about a soldier leaving his love to go to war. But it isn’t a copy of anything but just a theme that is all too common.

Wow! This song is so perfect for SYTYCD. I love almost every DC song but I think Permanant is my very fav – the raw emotion is incredible – his vocals are amazing – and like many others, this song is personally meaningful for me. Love it!!!

  • sunchick

I believe the pregnancy adds to his permanence. No matter what happens to him a part of him will still be with her.

Yeah, on one hand it’s a more literal connotation of the word Permanet. But then I thought about it, and the original inspiration for the lyrics, and cancer is a foreign thing that’s growing inside of you that is terrible and wrong, and a pregnancy is foreign thing growin inside of you that’s beautiful and right, so you know, it’s sort of a flip side. I dunno, Cookie’s music and contemporary dance both often make me get all deep and pensive.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gundomom CarieB

I can’t stop pressing “replay”…. so gorgeous and moving.

  • shell29

    Wow…that was beautiful. Very moving.

  • Dlynne

I have chills. The song, David’s voice, the dance – just breathtaking. God, I miss this show.

  • IdolFanatic

WOW! This is one of my favorite tracks on Cook’s album and then combining that with dance, which I also love, I think I’m done for! That was so amazing! Great promo for DC in Canada too! I love the cross promotion being used between the shows. With Archie’s version of Imagine being used last season on the US show as well as Cook’s Time Of My Life and a previous season’s SYTYCD cast performing with the Idols on Idol Gives Back. Pretty cool!

  • Deejay

Fear of abandonment can be plenty intense without a pregnancy. And I didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think the pregnancy was subtle or ambiguous at all right at the end there.

I didn’t think she was pregnant until you mentioned it, actually… Could be because I’m tired, though.

  • Chiqui

So Beautiful… and so Moving…! What flawless synchronization between Permanent’s melody and the dancing couple’s movement. I am deeply touched to the point of tears..

  • Squirrelly

Chiqui–so were the judges. I watched the last judge openly weep and actually had to stop talking for getting choked up. This song grabs your heart and won’t let go! David Cook is AMAZING (and deserves recognition for his AMAZING new CD full of AMAZING music).

  • reinharv

Permanent on Canadian itunes post SYTYCD… was at #47 pre-SYTYCD and 24 hours later is at #18…huge leap!
