Thank-you so much MJ!!! I am a Canadian in Seoul, South Korea. Been loving your site for awhile. This is fantastic and I look forward to being able to keep up with the happenings in the mother land through your site.

I think it's funny that people actually believe that CI gets AIs leftovers.

The entire Idol Franchise works in strange ways sometimes. I've actually had friends try out for Idol who are AMAZING singers/performers, and who don't make it past the first or second round, let alone to Toronto. But then they put through some completely mediocre or completely off-the-wall personality for reasons I'll never understand. However, for any of you who are trying to imply that us Canadians are less talented musically than our southern counterparts, may I remind you of the mediocrity that was Kristy-Lee Cook? Hailey Whats-her-face (I don't even remember how to spell her name)? Kellie Pickler? Poor little Sanjaya? The list could go on, and this occurs in BOTH AI and CI. Sometimes the judges put people through that make me go... "What the frick are you THINKING? Is this a voice you want to represent your country?"

As much as I love American Idol, I find it to be much more cookie-cutter than the Canadian version. The ballad overload bores me to tears. It sounds good, but it's just not interesting. This season of AI was MUCH better than every previous season to me in that regard, boasting more unique personalities and different styles. Though AI did everything they could to squish them back into the "proper shape."

I cringed watching them let through the "tie your mother down" guy, but I am adoring the authenticity, genuinity, quirkiness, and downright unconformity that many CI contestants (and the show in general) have to offer. It just feels more artistic and free, much more unpredictable.

Canadian idol, much like Canada as a country, supports differences.
I'm proud of it. Thanks again, MJ!

"In season 4 of Australian Idol, an Irish national (but Australian resident) was the winner."

Ahh, Damien Lieth. I remember him. he was pretty good. i remember i was captivated by that season. i loved lisa mitchell and bobby.

It says here for AI qualifications: "You have to be a legal U.S Citizen or a permanent U.S resident."
So i'm guessing you're right

Duke, you don't have to be an American citizen to try out for AI. You just need to be a U.S. resident with a valid work visa. I believe the same condition applies to any Idol franchise. Carly Smithson was ruled ineligible 2 years ago when she didn't have the proper paperwork. This year, all her credentials were in order. I think Michael Johns is not a U.S. citizen either, but just a resident with a Green Card.

Shaw, the reason I asked is because Tatiana would have to have been an american citizen to try out for AI, so...ETA, i just found my answer...

"Do I have to be a Canadian citizen?

No. Canadian Idol is open to Canadian citizens and landed immigrants. Basically, if you are legally entitled to work in Canada, you're OK. Student visas aren't going to cut it."

Well, she probably had this planned since she got cut from AI. Clever girl.

I would imagine that you would need to be a citizen. :P

Tatiana Ostapowych (merely for the fact that she sang Amy Winehouse, but I definitely agree with the comments made by the judges), the Piggots, and Earl Stevenson were definitely my favourites of this episode.

So she was cut in Hollywood. I didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t even think she made it to Hollywood. I think she could go farther in Canada. She has a little quirkiness that I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t thnk Americans get but Canadians do.

Oops....I thought I read all the posts before posting mine, and didn't read Hazelhel's post.

So happy to be watching Canadian Idol again (after taking the last few seasons off...last winner I remember was Melissa). CI's season 3 turned me off big time that I didn't even bother with the past two seasons (besides, it was hard to find videos). But I'm ready for season 6.
