Toronto Auditions

ETA: Vote for the Worst has some spoilers for the Top 22if you care to be spoiled!

Hey, let’s watch some Canadian Idol together, shall we? A big thank-you to Dave from Vote For the Worst who gave me the heads up on Igrecman, who posts CI videos immediately after the show airs. Thank you too, Igregman. Cool!

Tonight, are highlights from Toronto, Calgary and Edmonton. The auditions only last, thankfully, for 3 episodes, then it’s on to a week of Top 200 episodes. Afterward, the Top 22 begins. Check out the schedule here.

I think I’ll start this thread earlier in the future, for our Canadian and border state readers, so they can get a head-start on the discussion…

The videos are posted after the jump. We’ll be watching these together. I’ll post some thoughts later.

ETA: Some of tonight’s notable contestants:

  • Taylor Abrahmse the due who sang “Tie Your mother Down” would have been part of the bad reel in AI, yet, he moved on to Toronto
  • Tatiana Ostapowych – She performed Amy Winhouse’s “You Know I’m No Good. The judges got that she had a great voice, but was a little sterile. She auditioned for AI in San Diego last season.
  • Oliver and Sebastian Piggot – The brothers who auditioned separately. They were both very good, but the judges raved for Oliver who was the less conventional one of the duo.
  • Jesse Cottman – Dark haired guy with the scarf. Great audition, but that mall rock band he plays in is kinda lame.
  • Leo Tams – The poor guy had a great audition, except he was so nervous, he had giant pit stains on his shirt. Ew!
  • Earl Stevenson – He was the last audition of the night. The judges loved him. Very, uhm, quirky guy, even by CI standards.

Canadian Idol is like American Idol’s quirky little sister. I like that all 4 judges appear to be very musical and, judging by tonights episode, value contestants with a unique musical style over those who merely exhibit vocal prowess. A very different vibe from AI, indeed.

Is there an age limit on this one too?

  • itsalleternal

It is the same age limit as American Idol (and most Idol shows).

  • Lera

I just finished watching all the video’s and I have to say that they do a lot more back stories then we do. It could just be me but one it was 1/2 the video.

I think I’ll just wait until they narrow it down to top 20 then I will tune in better. It would be nice if Simon Fuller would make this available here in the USA to watch.

  • Frogpond

Just watched them .do wish we could watch them on tv though .Liked the black single father and the last guy they showed .

I ‘ve been watching these online since season 4 its really cool .

  • Duke

So on part one @ 2:05 when the big black chick hits that high “note”- i thought that was painfully too much…but then again, this is canadian idol.

I hope that’s not a dig at us Canadians! We’re anything but “too much”.
thanks mj for adding CI ! It’s nowhere near as flashy as AI, but it’s fun very eclectic!

  • marco5ny

I think it was last year that Brian Melo won CI. I still listen to his coronation song, All I Ever Wanted, at least once a day. I was disappointed in his album though. I also quite liked Theresa Sokyrka’s rendition of Good Mother from season 2. It’s such a challenge to catch these shows in the US so I love that MJ has found a way to bring them to a wider audience. Last season’s Jaydee Bixby was good for more than a few laughs.

  • Duke

Wow- these contestants suck some major ass. boring and a half. but because im addicted to idol, i will prob still (definitely) watch.

seriously, that judge thought that was the best guy ever on the show?!?! They would probably poop their pants if someone like Carly Smithson walked in and sang.

  • http://www.xanga.com/Cynarajane CJ

I liked the brothers who auditioned, especially the one who auditioned second who was told he wasn’t as good as his brother. I thought the brother who auditioned first had way too much vibrato.

Thanks for the videos MJ and Igregman. I’ve never watched Canadian Idol before. This is pretty cool.

  • Duke

Wow- Carrie is famous in Canada. How come they cant reciprocate?

  • pattyb

    lololol

I am in Toronto, and that chick “farting” was quite the “classic of all classics”…I love Brian Melo though, but his raspy voice and rock vibe did not do that great during last year! great guy and his rendition of Hallellujah was breathtaking!!
I think that Carly–yes we also had a Carly last year!!, who came in third, should’ve won….Molrouney, the host is great!!

  • pattyb

The rocker and the 16 year old story last year, sound familiar?/ lol

  • Lisa

Thank you MJ for doing this. I have never watched CI so I am excited to be able to watch.

I am not impressed with anyone from this set. I did think that Tatiana had a good voice, but she did not blow me away. I don’t get some of the love from the judges over a couple of the guys at all.

I have no doubt there are some great singers still to come & maybe they are holding them back? Bring em on already!

  • movin2thabeet

I live in a border town and love Canadian Idol. It is more intimate and real, less flashy. Love the judges. In particular, last year, I was a big fan of Brian Melo, and really enjoy his first CD.

So far, on this show, the only ones who perked my ears up were Tatiana and Earl. It’s still so early on in the process, but I’ll keep my ears open for these 2.

I enjoyed the montage of voices doing Carrie Underwood. A good way to get the country belters all in one take.

  • erinnthered

Why can’t American Idol be this self aware?

I’ve seen clips of CI on youtube, but never a whole episode, much less a whole season. Very…interesting.

Thanks, mj. I’m certainly hooked this year.

  • pattyb

tatjana, Earl, the brothers,Jesse are good so far, but my best is the sweaty guy…Theo!

  • primeminister

Yeah, Igregman is awesome. Thanks to this poster, I was able to watch AI while the show was STILL airing. In fact, this was how I watched AI every Tuesday night this season, as my dorm room didn’t have a TV. Faster than Rickey’s in terms of video.

Oh yeah! I liked him, too!

  • Dlynne

Just when I was having terrible Idol withdrawal pains, MJ comes to the rescue! Thanks, MJ.

I’m looking forward to this. It has a different vibe that really appeals to me. I liked the brothers and Earl. None of the girls did much for me but I’ll keep my eye on Tatiana.

BTW, I love that I don’t have to sit through commercials!

ETA: I’d love some back story on the judges. I don’t have a clue who they are.

  • RemusL

Dlynne, get all your info on the CI judges here:
    http://www.ctv.ca/idol/gen/ShowInfo.html

And yes, that’s Debra Byrd, who is the vocal coach on CI as well.

  • Hazehel

Tatiana Ostapowych was on on the American Idol, she got cut in the Hollywood week.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwRG-Y6j66Y

I like the older brother who sang “Please help me I’m falling”, and apart from a few other, most of the contestants in my opinion aren’t very good.

  • Chicago-sally

Hazel, it sounds like the American failures can go onto the Canadian Idol?

    I agree they sound karaoke.

  • wfowfowfo

Thanks for this MJ! The boredom had started to set in –

Earl was good. I like the judges. Pretty cool.

  • LadyBeBop

Am I mistaken, or didn’t Tatiana audition for American Idol this year, and didn’t make it to Hollywood?

  • LadyBeBop

Oops….I thought I read all the posts before posting mine, and didn’t read Hazelhel’s post.

So she was cut in Hollywood. I didn’t even think she made it to Hollywood. I think she could go farther in Canada. She has a little quirkiness that I don’t thnk Americans get but Canadians do.

So happy to be watching Canadian Idol again (after taking the last few seasons off…last winner I remember was Melissa). CI’s season 3 turned me off big time that I didn’t even bother with the past two seasons (besides, it was hard to find videos). But I’m ready for season 6.

I thought the name sounded familiar…

  • Duke

The name also rung a bell for me- aparently Tataiana or whatever probably made the top 22 too, thats funny. I guess CI gets our sloppy seconds haha.

  • Duke

Sorry to post again but i forgot to ask: DO you not need to be a canadian citizen to audition for the show?!?!

  • Shaw

I would imagine that you would need to be a citizen. :P

Tatiana Ostapowych (merely for the fact that she sang Amy Winehouse, but I definitely agree with the comments made by the judges), the Piggots, and Earl Stevenson were definitely my favourites of this episode.

  • Duke

Shaw, the reason I asked is because Tatiana would have to have been an american citizen to try out for AI, so…ETA, i just found my answer…

“Do I have to be a Canadian citizen?

No. Canadian Idol is open to Canadian citizens and landed immigrants. Basically, if you are legally entitled to work in Canada, you’re OK. Student visas aren’t going to cut it.”

Well, she probably had this planned since she got cut from AI. Clever girl.

  • Lisa

I thought Tatiana looked familiar! I agree, very clever girl.

  • Shaw

    Ah, alright. Sorry about that!

  • RemusL

Duke, you don’t have to be an American citizen to try out for AI. You just need to be a U.S. resident with a valid work visa. I believe the same condition applies to any Idol franchise. Carly Smithson was ruled ineligible 2 years ago when she didn’t have the proper paperwork. This year, all her credentials were in order. I think Michael Johns is not a U.S. citizen either, but just a resident with a Green Card.

In season 4 of Australian Idol, an Irish national (but Australian resident) was the winner.

  • Duke

“In season 4 of Australian Idol, an Irish national (but Australian resident) was the winner.”

Ahh, Damien Lieth. I remember him. he was pretty good. i remember i was captivated by that season. i loved lisa mitchell and bobby.

It says here for AI qualifications: “You have to be a legal U.S Citizen or a permanent U.S resident.”
    So i’m guessing you’re right

  • lrlpalmer

Thank-you so much MJ!!! I am a Canadian in Seoul, South Korea. Been loving your site for awhile. This is fantastic and I look forward to being able to keep up with the happenings in the mother land through your site.

I think it’s funny that people actually believe that CI gets AIs leftovers.

The entire Idol Franchise works in strange ways sometimes. I’ve actually had friends try out for Idol who are AMAZING singers/performers, and who don’t make it past the first or second round, let alone to Toronto. But then they put through some completely mediocre or completely off-the-wall personality for reasons I’ll never understand. However, for any of you who are trying to imply that us Canadians are less talented musically than our southern counterparts, may I remind you of the mediocrity that was Kristy-Lee Cook? Hailey Whats-her-face (I don’t even remember how to spell her name)? Kellie Pickler? Poor little Sanjaya? The list could go on, and this occurs in BOTH AI and CI. Sometimes the judges put people through that make me go… “What the frick are you THINKING? Is this a voice you want to represent your country?”

As much as I love American Idol, I find it to be much more cookie-cutter than the Canadian version. The ballad overload bores me to tears. It sounds good, but it’s just not interesting. This season of AI was MUCH better than every previous season to me in that regard, boasting more unique personalities and different styles. Though AI did everything they could to squish them back into the “proper shape.”

I cringed watching them let through the “tie your mother down” guy, but I am adoring the authenticity, genuinity, quirkiness, and downright unconformity that many CI contestants (and the show in general) have to offer. It just feels more artistic and free, much more unpredictable.

Canadian idol, much like Canada as a country, supports differences.
I’m proud of it. Thanks again, MJ!
