Amberly Thiessen is eliminated tonight. Drew Wright and Earl Stevenson were in the Bottom 3.

Well. The “kindler and gentler” Canadian Idol got a little nasty tonight, pulling a mean little switcheroo. As Ben asked contestants to take center stage, those left on the couch breathed obvious sighs of relief…only to find out they were actually in the B3. Ugh. Me no likey. I also didn’t like tonight’s result. I think Amberly is a fine singer. I loved her delicate phrasing and unique vibe. She tried to work the stage last night, and unfortunately she’s not very good at that. She’s best sitting down with a mic or playing guitar. I’m not too keen on an all-guy Top 5. Drew or Mitch MacDonald should have gone before Amberly, for sure. Although I did enjoy Mitch’s performance tonight. Like Amberly, he’s best performing folkie. Drew’s got a fanbase, obviously, but I agree with the judges. He’s a lightweight. Mookie Morris and Theo Tams put on great performances this week, they deserved to stay out of the Bottom 3 for sure. Earl was right behind them.

I don’t have much to say about Simple Plan. Derivative mall rock? Eh.

Icrecman’s videos for the performance show weren’t posted last night, so I grabbed a torrent file and cut some myself. I posted them in last night’s performance post, if you haven’t been back to the thread yet today. In the meantime, it looks like Igrecman is updating his video page HERE.

Tonight’s Results show begins at 8 pm ET. Vote For the Worst has results up right away. That’s the best place I know of to check for quick results at 8:30.

I probably still kind of suck at the Canadian Idol prediction game, but I have a feeling Earl Stevenson may be going home tonight. I think it should be Drew Wright, but I think a combination of regional support and this new haircut are gonna keep him in this race…

I’m not sure I can watch the show anymore after tonights result. Ridiculus. Next week is the Beatles theme too and after the AI7 contestants butchered that theme I don’t really care to have it repeated on CI6.

EEP. I surely do not understand the way the voting works on CI

  • itsalleternal

Regional voting plays a major role, although it probably didn’t here except to keep one guy safe.

  • J.S.G.

I can’t believe this has happned. The sing out was a killer. What a beautiful person. If CI had left her alone, she would still be here.

  • earthy

Three competitors all in the same regional location (close enough) including the one that lost tonight without giving the spoiler so that was going to be tough but I thought a different one deserved to go. Oh well :(

  • sue

I kind of enjoyed Beatles night on AI, maybe one week was enough. I can’t believe the results, ok I can. It was either Amberly, Mitch or Drew going so it ends up being the most talented one. I am glad that Earl is safe though because I have a feeling he will do well next week. The top two is definitely Mookie and Theo and it is a toss up on who will win.

  • chickaboom

My top 3 have been Earl, Mookie and Theo, so I’m ok with the results.

I actually found her performances to be a snooze fest. Hopefully Drew and Mitch will join her soon.

  • gingerly

Phew, I was so totally afraid Earl was leaving. I do like Amberly but tonight’s group sing showed her lack of versatility. I agree next should be Mitch and then Drew if he doesn’t get it together. Then I guess Earl. He’s my favorite but he’s not the best so I could live with that. Ummmm either Mookie or Theo could win and I’d be happy.

  • leashaj

Now this is how to do a results show. I thought the “sports desk” recap of the performances was hilarious, especially the instant replay of Theo “mule-kicking” the piano bench!

Plus, Idol was a little sneaky tonight with selecting the B3. Just when Earl, Amberly and Drew thought being on the couch meant “safe”…. Ben delivers his sneak attack and announces that it’s actually Mitch, Theo and Mookie at centre stage who are safe. (Theo’s reaction is priceless!)

I’m a little sad that Amberly is gone, as she was a better singer than Earl. (I just don’t get what’s so appealing about him. It sure as heck can’t be his stage moves! A dancer Earl is not.)

  • gingerly

I love Earl’s quirkiness, I love how he interprets a song, and I especially love his original music on his MySpace. I think he’s just Earl…you either get him or you don’t.

  • lalalalax3

I’m actually kind of glad to see Amberly leave.
    I never cared for her.
I always thought she was quite limited with what she could do and there was nothing particularily unique or interesting about her.
I thought her song choice this week was extremely predictable and definitely in her comfort zone.
Amberly was just dull, to me.
So I’m not really sad to see her go.

  • earthy

I can’t understand much that Earl sings half the time as he slurs words a lot so it must be his character that is selling him because of how he acts. It’s certainly not his dancing either because Earl makes Taylor Hicks look like a professional dancer.

When you look at everyone left Amberly was different then all the rest that of course she will appear out of place in any group performance.

  • sue

It is sad that the last girl standing is gone. No girl-power on CI this year. I was hoping it would be Drew going but I knew it would probably be Amberly since she went first. Plus her performance was not good last night. She seems really close to Theo, he was starting to cry and of course she couldn’t hold it together either. Ben was pulling a Ryan brutal elimination tactic. Amberly could only go so far. I hope Drew is gone next then Mitch and follow by Earl. I like Earl but he is starting to lose me. I am definitely on the Theo and Mookie train. Ultimately with Theo taking it all. Theo just seems like the best vocalist and I just like his style of singing. Since I pick Theo to win, he will probably lose, lol. :)

  • movin2thabeet

This show almost lost me. I was looking at the 3 called to the center of the stage, wondering, hoping they were pulling an AI on us. Theo and Mookie in the bottom 3? No way! And then, as we now know, they did pull the ol’ switcheroo. Well, those on the couch deserved to be in the bottom 3.

I don’t have a problem with Amberly leaving. I don’t think she’s nearly as talented as some of you think. Have you ever tried listening to her without looking at her? It’s pretty sad. Her vocals are really fairly weak. If you listen to the group song, she was by far the weakest up there. My guess is that she came on the show to build a career not unlike Kat McPhee’s. I expect modeling, commercials and films with maybe a token, highly produced CD. It was sweet to see her close connection to Theo though.

Beatles week should be great. I expect Theo, Mookie and Earl to really shine. IMHO, these 3 belong in the top 3. I hope it works out that way.

I like Earl but he is starting to lose me.

I agree, but why do I even like Earl at all?
    1 – he’s fun, quirky and different
2 – he makes me think of a slow-talkin’ lanky prairie farmer – which is what he is I guess, except for the farmer part.
3 – he sings reasonably well
4 – he picks great songs!

I think Earl should be in the top 3. I hope Mitch or Drew don’t beat him out for 3rd spot, but it’s possible.
I don’t like Theo, but I recognize the guy can sing, so I expect him in the top two.
I really love watching Mookie, but I’ve replayed all his songs without the video, so even though he may not be the best singer, he is good, and has a recognizable voice and enjoyable tone.
My husband is an independent music reviewer/critic and thinks Mookie is more talented than Theo, although Theo’s formal training shows. Just another opinion.

Too bad about Amberley, but she couldn’t have gone more than another week anyway. She wasn’t really keeping up or improving anymore.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Have you ever tried listening to her without looking at her?

Yes I have. I usually listen to the performances at least once, without watching. Her looks are completely irrelevant to me. She doesn’t have powerhouse vocals, but I find her tone and her phrasing appealing. She doesn’t remind me of Kat McPhee at all. She’s got a sense of herself as an artist that Kat didn’t (and still doesn’t) have. I can imagine what a record from Amberly would sound like. I think she’s very marketable as a pop/folkie artist–like Colbie Callait. That sound is really hot right now.

  • movin2thabeet

Of course, just my opinion, but I think Amberly was going straight for Colbie Caillat’s sound, breaks in her voice and all. And we already have a CC who’s perfect at her sound. The comparison with Kat wasn’t about her voice or personality but more about her intention for going on the show. Just a theory, we’ll see.

Have you heard any of Amberly’s originals from her myspace.. Quite nice and soothing to listen to IMO.

  • justantonio

i hope they pick Oh! darling for Moookies

  • Toonces74

Whaaa? I can’t understand why the judges/producers seemed to actually want Amberly out of the competition. And now they are left with 5 dudes. That’s just weird.

I will miss Amberly. She is talented and I love her voice.

  • Toonces74

Oh, and that makes Mitch the only contestant not to land in the bottom 3.

  • BootStar

Wow, I was in the minority and not a big fan of Amberly (she just never seemed to break out of her box and I found her style incredibly unoriginal, given the number of young female pop-folkies out there today like Colbie Caillat, Feist, A Fine Frenzy, etc.), but she did not deserve that send-off. That was as cruel as what Ryan did to Michael Johns the night he was eliminated. Poor thing. Hope she had a good cry and is feeling better now.

I love Mookie and Theo–completely different musicians but they both move me and I enjoy watching and listening to both of them.
