2nd Update:Â   Contrary to reports, Perez Hilton’s inside sources are claiming Britney Spears WILL NOT be performing on the finale. More will be revealed, I’m sure.

UPDATE:   More info on the song, “This is How I Want to Be” rumored to be this year’s coronation song:   It appeared on a 2001 release by singer Kristine Blond, and the lyrics are decidedly not the stuff made of coronation songs.   Between the age of the song and the lyrical content, I’m thinking the rumor is wrong…

Rumor has it the Season 8 coronation song is called “This is How I Want To Be” written by Joseph Belmaati, Jorgen Kjell Elofsson, Hed Mich Hansen, and Kara DioGuardi.

Also, according to rumor, Adam and Kris can re-arrange the song, but are not allowed play instruments during the performance.

In other news, Extra is reporting that Britney Spears is rumored to be taking the stage with Lionel Richie, Carlos Santana, Cyndi Lauper, Queen Latifah, Black Eyed Peas and Keith Urban, and David Cook for the Idol finale on Wednesday…

Also, David Cook will perform the song “Permanent”, according to a MySpace message from Our Lady Peace.   The performance will be downloadable from iTunes with all proceeds going to David’s charity for brain tumor research that he recently set up for his late brother Adam, who recently succumbed to cancer.

We’ve already heard

  • Also set to appear:Â   Jason Mraz, according to his website
  • Keith Urban will duet with Kris Allen, Allison Iraheta with Cyndi Lauper
  • Rumored to appear:Â   KISS and David Bowie (to duet with Adam Lambert)

The song will be available as a download on Itunes that night and all proceeds will go to David Cook’s charity for brain tumour research that he recently set up for his brother Adam, whom he lost a couple of weeks ago to cancer.
We’ll have a direct link to the Itunes single on Wednesday night, so be sure to check back here.

  • sunchick

^ Note to self: buy more Kleenex.

I wonder if the download will be the new arrangement, with the band coming in…

  • Victoria

I was trying to be optimistic about the winner’s song this year, but “This is How I Want To Be” is a lame title, so I’m guessing it’s a lame song. Kara’s not a bad songwriter, but occasionly she writes one that is way too cheesy. Unfortunately, I think this might be one of them.

ETA: Cook singing Permanent will be awesome. Love him.

  • wolfsbane813

ahhhh! permanent is one of my favorite cook songs! so excited :)

and kris not being able to play his guitar might put him at a disadvantage…. :/

i still think he is going to take this thing!

  • Heart

Bowie still might be on the Finale according to Joe’s Place!

  • lakhesis

    :clap_tb: Permanent by Cook!

  • KrisAllen1

Kris performed great without his guitar before.Falling Slowly is a perfect example.

  • Victoria

This just keeps getting better and better. Cook, Bowie… I even love Britney, lipsyching and all! :laugh_tb:

  • tierbee

If DC is doing Permanent, I’m going to buy me a box of Kleenex. That song made me cry the first time I heard it. Not going to be any different now!

  • clearone

Bowie still might be on the Finale according to Joeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Place!

EEEEEEEE!!!!! Prays, prays, PRAYS that this comes to be!!!! Anyone else just wouldn’t compare!!! I want to see Adam be a total fanguy…….he was so cute with Jamie Foxx, I can just imagine how he’ll be with Bowie.

  • Balance

Just the announcement about Permanent made me cry…in my office…full on tears. I couldn’t care less anymore who else is there or what they sing.

  • AC

OMG, Permanent is my favorite song from his album. It’s so sad.. i’m crying right now thinking about it. Good for Cook for using this opportunity to advance his cause as well.

The coronation song title is not as cheesy as this is my now, do i make you proud, etc.. but I have a feeling Kara had Adam in mind with that title. It should be awesome that Kris can change it up to his style too. I hope they make both versions available!

And am I the only one who wants Jamie Foxx to come back and do a duet with Kris since he keeps gushing about him? haha

  • t2

No instruments — chalk on up for Lambert

    Yes to re-arranging — it’s a plus for both.

  • Norwegiano

Maybe Britney is going to catch Adam’s coattails back to the top by doing a duet of “Womanizer” with him.

  • anibundel

The real question is who will lip sync a duet with Britney?

I’ll go on record with guessing….Lil.

  • jz

    YAY FOR BRITNEY! :) :) :)
IDGAF I love that fierce bitch.

  • sallyas1

    Britney Spears? Yuck.

This is going to be a tough one for David Cook. I hear he has not been able to perform that song for a few months. I give him huge props for even attempting it.

I own the cd, and therefore the song already, but I fully plan on purchasing off of Itunes as well. Money is going to a good cause.

  • sentientcontent

I just want to know if Bowie is actually going to show up. If so, he has to do a duet with Adam; it would be cruel of him not to.

  • luvnlife

I’m thinking Bowie could be a great mentor for Adam for many reasons. I can’t even imagine how Kris and Adam are going to pull this off surrounded by all those stars and legends. Whew, talk about a memory making moment.

  • SparklesATL

The Thin White Duke meets The Thin White Earl?

  • sma11ie

PERMANENT!! Okay, I’m dead. And crying. I’m so happy for DC that he was able to pull the charity single thing together so quickly and honor Adam in this way. I bet the single will be the awesome rocked out version, which differentiates it from the piano ballad on the record. After months of listening to the crappy sound from the MP3 I ripped from noisy fan vids, I cannot frickin wait to download a HQ version of that!

  • TKat

I think that even the chance for Adam to be on stage is cool. Even though there are other people I would HEAR Adam duet with. Seeing this will be fun. I hope it’s real.

  • tessl

David’s singing Permanent-geez, and the winner is who?

  • lizland

I can’t imagine Britney will duet with anyone. She can hardly sing by herself, let alone coordinate with someone else.

she should be amusing though. You know she’ll at least sound okay since she will be lip synching. I would die laughing if she does If You Seek Amy. Wouldn’t be much worse than Flo Rida (oral sex) and Lady Gaga (fantasizing about a woman while with your man) though.

  • http://twitter.com/nokking nokking

Crossing fingers and toes for Bowie! Please please show up. You know there is no other place you should be on Wed night :thumbup_tb:

Aren’t coronation songs all sound cheesey? This one may not be exception. Just have faith It’ll be something great!

  • jz

    And I must add…

COME ON IDOL! MAKE BOWIE AND ADAM HAPPEN!
    YES YES YES YOU CAN!

  • wand3rful

if they had miley cyrus on, i dont see the issue with britney…..both are true masters of singing live :devil_tb:

  • itsalleternal

WHY are TPTB so desperate to repeat the mistakes of the season 6 finale, when the outside celebrities hogged airtime so much and denied our own Idols a chance on stage?

I think the non-Idol celebs should be eliminated from the finale entirely. It should be entirely past and present Idols, and maybe Idol-connected acts.

  • terps

The ratings will be even higher with Britney added, the “rumored” roster is kinda bland right now, they need someone who can bring in even more ratings and Brit can do that. Even though she will be sining to her recorded track as always.

  • ggdoorsfan

david. bowie. rumored to be on idol?….. be still my long dormant teenaged glam rock ziggy stardust/aladdin sane/thin white duke/ lovin’ heart :clap_tb: i pray to all that may be holy that this is true… bowie and lambert…. perfect pairing…. could this be the passing of the glam rock torch from the old to the new? i don’t know, don’t care – i agree – make. this. happen. bowie, possibly on the idol stage…. spazz.

  • Chipmunk

Bowie still might be on the Finale according to Joeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Place!

    Bowie…maybe with Adam??? :thumbup_tb:

WHY are TPTB so desperate to repeat the mistakes of the season 6 finale, when the outside celebrities hogged airtime so much and denied our own Idols a chance on stage?

Ratings. It is what makes the Idol World go round.

Well that and what they lead to . . .advertising cash!

  • http://www.irish-wolfhounds.com Buderschnookie

I think the non-Idol celebs should be eliminated from the finale entirely. It should be entirely past and present Idols, and maybe Idol-connected acts.

I see the guests as gifts to this years contestants- a chance to sing with one of their idols after the hell they have endured to pad the pockets of TPTB. It’s a celebration of this years show and big guests make it special for the contestants, plus punch up any sagging careers of the guests as well as promoting whatever they are doing currently.

And aside from last years winner sort of handing over the reins I see no need for any other past season contestants. At all.

  • razzyberry77

UM, How can they do a duet at this stage of the game if they cant even rehearse? Bowie and Adam that is

  • itsalleternal

Ratings. It is what makes the Idol World go round.

Well that and what they lead to . . .advertising cash!

Except ratings plunged in the season 6 finale over the season 5 finale (only to recover somewhat last season).

  • wellhesback

If Cookie can get through that song at the Nokia, well, I’ll sure be downloading it. Heck, even if he can’t. Am misty eyed at the thought.

Someone here must know – Is Cook’s the best selling “coronation song”?

  • chicksineggz

    Wow, Permanent? That’s crazy.

What’s up with the whole “This is..” thing.
    This is my now
This the time of my life
This is how I want to be…

  • kimberann

Looks like Dave Cook will be stealing the stage Wed. night with PERMANENT! I have my kleenex ready because I am going to be a soggy mess right along with my soggy cookie. You just know he’s going to be crying. :glurps_tb: This will for sure shoot straight up to #1 on itunes. I predict within 10 hours of the show ending.

  • razzyberry77

Speaking of Advertising dollars, does anybody think that the Major Advertisers have threatened to pull out next year if they hand the crown to a gay man for fear of their product brand being damaged and that kris will be given the win for this reason?

  • tara8

I guess it’s okay if they’re allowed to rearrange it. For Kris, playing the piano or guitar would be a plus, but as long as they don’t have to sing a ballad that’s not fit for their voice, it won’t be a total disaster. I’m confident that Kris can sail right through and do his thing with it.

  • JenG

coronation song is called à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“This is How I Want To Beà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

I don’t know why I had my hopes up for a semi-decent coronation song..

and lololol to all these celeb rumors. Britney? Bowie? ahahah, this could be an amazing finale.

  • ptslittlecomment

I don’t think there would be any problem with Coke in terms of advertising as they have funded (or co-funded) some projects in Atlanta that are important to the homosexual population there.

  • ggdoorsfan

heck – i have really no interest in who wins idol this year, or who was scheduled to perform on the finale – till the bowie rumor…. been through the drill with the contestants and the past contestants too many times before, and there are really no surprises left… but a bowie/lambert pairing for me is volatile, a little dangerous, and exciting as all get out…. can’t think of another celebrity pairing in recent idol finale memory that seems just so… perfect… bowie still has that edge, and we don’t see him enough on television… if they pull this off, it will be the highlight of my evening….

  • sallyas1

If they get Bowie, Adam will find a way to rehearse. Hopefully after Tuesday night’s performance. (He needs to concentrate on Tuesday first). I think Tuesday and Wednesday are typically “no sleep” days for the final 2. I think the competition performances are rehearsed now. Once Tuesday is over, they immediately go into rehearsals for their celeb duets as well as their parts of the group songs (and there will be some). Wednesday is results night then interviews then flights to wherever. I think DC was interviewed by Jay Leno the day after the results last year, making for one of the cuter moments on Leno (DC laying down on the couch).

If David can pull off Permanent, and as hard as it will be I think he will, it may very likely be the performance of the night (oops – sorry celeb duets).

  • Mary

Two things that make me say UH-OH:

A song co-written by FOUR people?

And what are we up to now? 14 “guest stars?” I wonder if they’ll have time to announce who the winner is.

What Not To Sing is absolutely right. The show has totally jumped the shark this season.

    http://www.scribd.com/doc/11441393/American-Idol-Coronation-Singles-Sales-and-Chart-History

Per this link, David Cook’s coronation song was the top selling coronation song for AI to date. All by download – and by a massive amount. I find the #2 very interesting – Clay Aiken. Not surprising that Clay is higher than Ruben, but higher than Kelly and Carrie? That is surprising.

  • colette

Two things that make me say UH-OH:

A song co-written by FOUR people?

right you are Mary! Very bad sign, like those movies written by 12 people….

  • sallyas1

I agree with Buder. The celeb duets are a congrats to the AI finalists (as well as showing the fans that AI is respected in the music world). It is done after competition time, so no votes are affected. And it is fun. If the results show included just AI performers, past and present, I would likely fastforward to only the artists I want to see. This way I watch the entire results night.

  • ladymadonna

    Someone here must know – Is Cookà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the best selling à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“coronation songà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ?

Yes. It gets hard to find weekly sales figures once the songs fall off the charts, but based on last-known sales, TOML is by far the best selling Idol coronation song released to-date. It also charted on the Billboard Hot 100 longer than any other coronation song (20 weeks on the Hot 100 and 17 weeks on Hot 100 Recurrents). Note: “Coronation Song” is defined as a song written for the finalists to be sung during the finale, and which is then released for sale. Not all runners-up have had coronation singles released, but I have included those that did below:

David Cook ‘Time of My Life’ – 1,170,000
Clay Aiken ‘This is the Night’ – 994,000
Kelly Clarkson ‘A Moment Like This’ – 974,000
Carrie Underwood ‘Inside Your Heaven’ – 796,000
Ruben Studdard ‘Flying Without Wings’ – 774,000
Taylor Hicks ‘Do I Make You Proud’ – 658,000
    Fantasia ‘I Believe’ – 509,000
Bo Bice ‘Inside Your Heaven’ – 400,000
Jordin Sparks ‘This is My Now’ – 273,000
Katherine McPhee ‘My Destiny’ – 262,000
    Diana Degarmo ‘I Believe’ – 223,000

Brian at Idol Chatter told me that he would be doing a special annual update on these sales figures either just before or just after the finale, so hopefully we’ll be able to update this tally soon.

  • ggdoorsfan

does anyone know if the finale guest performances are available for download on itunes afterwards? trying to cover the bases if bowie does appear and sing… that one for me would be a must have :thumbup_tb:

A song co-written by FOUR people?

right you are Mary! Very bad sign, like those movies written by 12 peopleà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.

That’s not unusual. Actually it’s quite common. And sometimes it takes very little to earn a credit. Like, you can change a couple of lyrics and still get a writing credit.

  • IdolThoughts

I have to say I’m a little disappointed with the line-up.

Lionel Richie, Carlos Santana, Cyndi Lauper, Queen Latifah, Black Eyed Peas

    Am I crazy for thinking…WTF?

How about CURRENT bands or bands promoting albums that the Idol viewer would actually buy…like Green Day, Kings of Leon etc.? No? Black Eyed Peas are good, but I’m a little meh at the rest of them. I did enjoy the Bryan Adams medley last season, so I’m holding out that it will be a good night.

  • Jolene

Sma11ie, do you think Permanent could be anything other than the record version? IDK, I don’t think David would’ve had enough time to re-record it. I’m not sure he’d be inclined to, either. The live version with the band is awesome, but I’m actually expecting the version on Idol to be more along the lines of the record version. They’ll have the strings section for him, which he doesn’t have on tour.

I guess we’ll find out in a few hours. At this point I’m not expecting a different version to pop up on iTunes though.

  • vixen

i don’t enjoy adam, but BOWIE! squeeee. (i was born, like, 20 years too late. sigh.)

and david cook? still my idol, still my hero. kudos to him.

  • sallyas1

I gotta admit. My snarky self is very happy to see the king crapola of all coronation songs – This is My Now – wayyyy down on the list.

  • http://absinthedreamers.blogspot.com/ Starrlight

Bowie would be awesome. Muse would be way more awesome. A Matt Bellamy/Adam Lambert duet on Sing for Absolution would pretty much complete my Idol experience for life.

  • colette

Green Day on Idol! Love it, love it, and forget it. Green Day is a highly political punk band that hates shows like Idol, I’ll betcha. But they’re brilliant and I love’em.

  • mandalay

Posted this in the other thread, but according to this German lyrics site, here are the lyrics to the supposed coronation song This Is How I Wanna Be, originally done by Kristine Blond. If they’re correct (why wouldn’t they be), I don’t think this is the coronation song.

    link to the site: http://www.lyrics.de/songtexte/kristineblond/1c07_kristineblond.html

Lyrics they have for the song with that title done by the artist referenced:

For some reason the words to the chorus are missing though.

    Don’t wanna make up
    This is a break up
I’m not going back and forth this time
‘Cause I made up my mind

    Don’t wanna try again
    Talk about us when
The past is done we’ve had our fun
Find another one who’s gonna give you
    Everything I gave to you
    After all this time
you swore she’d never step foot through your door
    I’m so sure

    Chorus:

is done we’ve had our fun
Find another one who’s gonna give you
    Everything I gave to you
And I know that in time
You’ll be regretting that you went out on me
    I’m so sure

    Chorus:

Find another one who’s gonna give you
    Everything I gave to you
    After all this time
    You swore
She’d never step foot through your door
    I’m so sure

  • sma11ie

And aside from last years winner sort of handing over the reins I see no need for any other past season contestants. At all.

I think that’s exactly the case this year. I think DC is the only past Idol performing for the finale. Carrie is performing the sendoff single for Top2 per tradition, like Ruben with Celebrate Me Home last year.

I agree that it’s always fun to see them to bring on the big acts to duet/collaborate with the Idols. But I don’t want too many solo performances from outside acts that would take away from this season’s contestants. I don’t particularly need to see a random Jonas Brothers solo performance, for example.

  • hypnoticwhisper

I am so proud of David. honestly, his performance is the one i’m looking froward to most. I most likely will cry.

  • ggdoorsfan

i donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t enjoy adam, but BOWIE! squeeee. (i was born, like, 20 years too late. sigh.)

i was a young teen during the height of the glam rock era, and it was good times! the music, the hair, the clothes, the spectacle of it all…. bowie blew our minds… literally. we were used to lame-o, cookie cutter singers and performers of the ”american bandstand” variety, and bowie was anything but bandstand for american teens, hahahha… still liked his music after he retired the ziggy stardust and other personas, but admire his influence and artistry still…. please idol – make this happen :innocent2_tb:

  • terps

You have to remember when comparing the winners singles that idol didn’t have itunes for Kelly and some of the other idols. So it would be kinda difficult to compare the winners singles considering Idol is a total 180 from what it was win Kelly was on it.

  • hypertwink

Maybe Britney is going to catch Adamà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s coattails back to the top by doing a duet of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Womanizerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ with him

Really? I know it’s not cool to criticize Adam but how many platinum selling albums has he done? Whatever you may think of Britney, she’s proven herself in the big, bad world of pop music. Him, not so much.

  • cay

I love what David Cook is going to do. In a night where everything else seems so old, tired and yuk, his performance is the one I’ll look forward to. I hope/think he’ll be behind the scenes too giving some moral support to Kris and Adam. Not many people know what this week is like, and I think Cook will be a great friend to them both.

  • cwg509

Maybe Britney is just going to be a “presenter”, and not actually sing. Like just walk across the stage, looking hot

holding out hope for some surprises (good ones)

Those lyrics seem not very Idol-like, plus wasn’t Kara working so hard all season, and that is the reason she could not complete a coherent sentence on the show??

  • dearheart

colette, Billy Joe Armstrong has actually said in a recent interview that he watches AI sometimes, and even called Lambert’s high notes badass. Also, they’ve performed in the past.

  • cheese

Can’t wait to hear “This is How I Want My Moment Like Now to Be.” What a promising song title!

I’m trying to figure out how “Permanent” will fit into this otherwise celebratory show. Hopefully the performance won’t come before or after a lame movie promo skit. Kudos to Idol for letting David have 3 minutes for charity.

  • terps

I wonder if idol would dare let Brit sing her currnet single, “If U Seek AMY”.

Why does a coronation song have to be cheesy, is that in a rule book somewhere?

Dare to be cool, American Idol, dare.

Then the winner won’t openly cringe on stage everytime he or she is forced to sing it. Heck they might even put it on their album.

  • Lisa

I am not a Clay fan, but my most *memorable* Idol Finale moment was this one:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4T2Sysf_w4

Favorite duet was David Cook & ZZTop. Yowsers!

I don’t know if anything can top those two moments for me, if something does, those two are safely tucked away in my heart memory box.

Adam & Bowie? Hmmmm could be awesome.

David singing Permanent, this will probably rule my memory box. *Sigh* I feel tears coming on two day’s early.

  • sma11ie

colette, I actually never saw Green Day’s performance from AI, just read about it in an article, but dearheart up top said they did a John Lennon cover in S6, so I’ll take his/her word for it. I love me some Green Day too. Basket Case was the first CD that I bought. 21st C Breakdown is pretty awesome too. For them, I’d make an exception to my opinion on outside acts doing solo performances for the Finale. That’d be awesome. Actually, I might not mind a solo Britney performance either, for the sheer entertainment factor, if not for quality.

  • tierbee

Why does a coronation song have to be cheesy, is that in a rule book somewhere?

It’s part of your American Idol dues… if you win, you sing that crappy song for, what, 50-some dates on tour? Plus all your appearances on talk shows and such? Hehe. (I just heard Time of My Life yesterday when I was getting lunch at Subway… and Taylor’s Do I Make You Proud at the grocery store… coronation songs *linger*.)

  • hypertwink

As much as I think that Permanent would be a great moment, I still feel a littledisappointed since I wanted him to perform Bar-Ba-Sol.

  • lavender1960

Santana works with current artists and continues to put out new albums. and ergo Santana is current. I want to know what lucky Idol contestant is going to get to sing with one of the greatest guitarists of all time.

Green Day would be awesome, especially since their new album, 21 Century Breakdown, just hit the shelves. Hmm and they have appeared before. They aren’t above blatant promotion.

  • Norwegiano

Has Kara’s song ever been produced or recorded? Anyone have a link to something like that? I tried Googling it, but nothing.

KISS, David Bowie, and Adam all together! OMG. I hope so! *squee*

  • colette

I really think that Kris could bring a lot to “Smooth” — higher and less growly but more vulnerable than Rob thomas? I’d love to hear it.

  • IdolThoughts

As much as I think that Permanent would be a great moment, I still feel a littledisappointed since I wanted him to perform Bar-Ba-Sol.

I love me some Barbasol too, but I concur with you that Permanent will be a great moment. I just can’t believe the strength of character that he has to do this in front of a gazillion people on such a big stage. I mean, he has had trouble getting through Lie lately…I just don’t know where he draws his strength from, but I admire him sooo much! I hope he feels the love from his fans!

  • mandalay

“Has Karaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s song ever been produced or recorded? Anyone have a link to something like that? I tried Googling it, but nothing.”

I posted two links and the lyrics upthread. If the lyrics are correct, I don’t think this is the coronation song.

  • colette

and thanks for the Green Day vid Tierbee! I didn’t catch that earlier, or my senility just took a big leap forward.

It’s a great, great lennon song, though relatively tame for Green Day. I’d love to just see them blow everybody away with something more dangerous if they come on again. And given that they’ve got anew album, they just might.

They’re also doing a Good Morning America concert sometime this week…

  • Jolene

As much as I think that Permanent would be a great moment, I still feel a littledisappointed since I wanted him to perform Bar-Ba-Sol.

I love BBS, but I have to admit I never thought it was the right song to perform on Idol, and I had no idea what else he could do. It can’t be a current radio single (because he already did CBTM), I was half expecting it to be a duet on some cover. I NEVER would’ve guessed Permanent, but IMHO it’s perfect – the money will go towards a great cause, and it’s a very powerful song.

No matter what version it is, I plan to buy a copy to support the charity cause.

  • Jackfan143

A new coronation song already. Hell, I am still hearing TOML on my radio a year later. They get known writers while most got nobodys? This season certainly has been easier for them. Then for idols in the past. They didn’t have to learn as many songs and even the coronation song will be written by known Song writers. They got better music choices? What up with that?

  • lavender1960

The reason Time of My Life has done so well however is because David Cook’s vocal talents and take on the song was able to somehow transcend the cheese factor.

Wouldn’t a well written coronation song = more revenue and even longer shelf life? We call those classic songs.

  • milly93

Oh, and Starrrlight – omg. Yes. A Matt Bellamy/Adam duo on Sing for Absolution. Omg. Killer. Amazing.

  • WinkyDink

By definition, a runner-up cannot have a “coronation” song (although Clay’s song having “This” in the title gives one pause, heh).

However Cook sings his apparently heart-rending song, he WOULD be eclipsed by David Bowie. And if DB has a new CD upcoming, also by definition that would make him “current”.

Is it 10:06 p.m. Wednesday yet?

  • maturin

Speaking of Advertising dollars, does anybody think that the Major Advertisers have threatened to pull out next year if they hand the crown to a gay man for fear of their product brand being damaged and that kris will be given the win for this reason?

I know! Look at the terrible disasters that befell Frasier with out gay actor David Hyde Pierce and Will and Grace with its gay subject matter! They only lasted a decade or so apiece! And how advertisers have rushed to avoid Grey’s Anatomy with out gay actor T R Knight, and How I Met Your Mother with Neil Patrick Harris, and Ellen with, you know, Ellen!

And then they’ll jump in a time machine in pull their ads from Idol episodes with Elton John and George Michael! And all the episodes that featured the super gay music of Elton John, which will retroactively wipe out all of Idol seasons past and cause a rip in the space time continuum.

    Except: no, they won’t.

  • cookbunny

Re: whether David would have time to re-record “Permanent”…I’m almost positive (and I say almost because still, the only confirmation we have is the one MySpace blog post) that what will be sold is the video of the live performance from the finale. Whether it will be DC with piano and strings, like on DCTR, or with full band like he’s done on tour…well, let’s just wait for tweets on EEB’s whereabouts and that should clue us in!

  • lavender1960

Gee the coronation song could be some rehash of some old obscure song of Kara’s sitting in a dustpile. If that is the right song and lyrics as above, clearly those lyrics would have to be reworked. Maybe they just used the melody and the title. Maybe Kara forgot the power of Google.

  • cay

The runner-up though will get to pick his first single and have it out sometime this summer. Not so bad for second place!! Cook’s coronation song was good I thought. It’s the only song from him I ever hear. But Archie’s did really well also and is still played around here.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

And according to this site, the songwirters are the same. Me thinks the rumor is wrong.

The song was written in 2001. So, it’s probably not it…

  • GeminiDolly
  • Thea

About Green Day: they appeared in S6 singing Working Class Hero (which was a single they had out at the time covering the Lennon song), but in an interview they said AI made them tape the performance beforehand because they did not trust that they would not mess up the live “family friendly show”, ie: make a political statement or swear, which they did regularly in the lyrics of the song (which were bleeped).
Conclusion: highly doubt they could be on the finale. (Sidenote: Billy Joe also explicitly said he would never be a mentor on AI, so can’t hope for that for the future either).

Bowie: fingers SO crossed they hurt. It would be a dream for Adam, and for us!

DC and Permanent: the guy has serious guts and heart and I just love him to pieces (he he he… good thing I’m a girl, otherwise I would have to qualify :) ). There will not be a dry eye in the house…

  • mandalay

I thought I read somewhere that it was an old song already done by that Kristine person. Maybe Kara co-wrote two songs with the same title.

  • karenw

Yeah those lyrics don’t seem to fit with a coronation song .. they seem more of a bitter broken love affair song .

  • clearone

    Looking good.

Geez…….enjoy the smiling face because this is going to get old real soon for Adam. It’s a novelty now but just wait…….

I hope this isn’t an old beater of a song from Kara. If it is it just confirms my belief that AI is CHEAP!!!

  • http://myspace.com/pm68 Pam

I predict this coronation song by Kara will be cheesy to the 100th power. I pity whoever wins that has to sing it. I have to admit that I was truly thankful that I didn’t have to hear magic rainbow last month at my show. LOL

I never thought in a million years that we would ever hear Permanent on the idol stage. I have to say given the recent set of circumstances that this will be a moving and memorable performance from DC. I think I may need the Kleenex myself.

I have to admit I’m not blown away by the star lineup for Wednesday night.

  • season8fan

what is David Cook’s connection with Our Lady Peace?

  • Sunn

Ok here’s what I think about the duets. I think Adam will be doing Black Or White on Wednesday with Michael Jackson!

It makes sense because of the tweet clues, MJ’s band rehearsing in the Nokia centre, and according to Joe’s Place, MJ himself was spotted leaving the Nokia Centre.

MJ has a concert tour coming up in London, doing AI makes sense.

  • sauer1

Anybody wonder if they have David Cook on there because they can’t get anybody else. They have a pretty lame line up though. I do remember last year we didn’t know until the very end that One Republic was gonna be on the show. At least I didn’t and was pleasantly suprised.

If they can’t get someone like David B., GreenDay, or someone else I would say that AI is really losing its popularity as the guests they have so far are not too good.

Anyways, Adam I hope they find someone that excites you and brings out your talent as we know it. Make sure you Adam fans vote the full four hours as you know, he is the underdog this time out.

Also, hope that rumor of Kara’s song is wrong. It sounds really lame to say the least. If that were it, I’d say she need not come back next year as her credibility is shot!!!

  • sallyas1

I think Our Lady Peace is one of Cook’s idols. He talked about them numerous times last year during his Idol year. Was very excited when Raine agreed to co-write with him.

I think that is it, but maybe more? Others may know.

Hmmmm – I can see Michael Jackson being the big celeb of the night and performing with the top 10. Or Gokey still needs a celeb – maybe they will sing PYT? I think it was one of Danny’s better performances?

  • season8fan

If that’s true, then it’s totally not fair that Kris Allen gets Keith Urban…there is no comparison. I was hoping he’d get someone a little more his style than Keith Urban, but now hearing Adam gets Michael Jackson!! omg people will be talking about that for years!!

  • lavender1960

Our Lady Peace is one of David’s favourite bands and I believe he co-wrote the song Permanent with Raine Maida the lead singer of Our Lady Peace, I think he and David worked on a few songs for David’s album. Raine Maida and his wife Chantal Kreviasuk, Canadians, are a power house songwriting team in the music business actually and Chantal has written so called coronation songs for Canadian Idol which are significantly light on the cheese, compared to American Idol cheddar.

what is David Cookà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s connection with Our Lady Peace?

Our Lady Peace it’s David favorite band, and Raine co-wrote with David the song Permanent.

  • sunchick

what is David Cookà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s connection with Our Lady Peace?

If I remember correctly, Raine Maida’s wife Chantal composed the piano piece for Permanent, Raine and David worked together on the rest of the music, and David wrote the lyrics. I’m going to be holding my breath hoping he gets through it. And I hope the sound editing people have their shit together for the finale. I have seen crappy cellphone fanvids of live performances of this song that still manage to capture it adequately, so no excuses.

Also, \o/ for Bowie still being on the table. Re: Brit Brit…maybe she will perform Circus with the top whatever it was…seven or eight, like the Ford vid.

  • sallyas1

I’m probably one of the few who is actually kinda excited about Britney Spears on Idol. Makes me realize how very weird the music biz is when you have vocal talent of Adam and Kris on one side, and Britney Spears on the other. And Brit Brit is the bigger star. (yipes!).

My little evil snarky devil likes to come out and play during moments like that.

  • EmmaJK

Anybody wonder if they have David Cook on there because they canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get anybody else.

Cook won last year. That’s why he’s on this year.

    EDT: I’m way too slow.

  • idoladdict07

NICE artists they got there, huh?
SO thrilled for the finale! Awesome!

Btw, is it okay if you post your videos on Google video, Myspace, or Facebook too?
Would be highly appreciated if you do so.
Thanks MJ! WE LOOOOOOOOOOVE YOU! :jittery_tb:

  • savgal

Totally agree would not be fair for Adam to duet with MJ, and Kris with KA.
Wonder of MJ if the special guest this year, as George Michael was last year? There has been a lot of MJ on the show in Season 8, and if the Top 13 did an MJ medley and MJ suddenly appeared, would be epic.

  • progression

what is David Cookà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s connection with Our Lady Peace?

Cook also covered OLP’s Innocent on the show last year.

Anybody wonder if they have David Cook on there because they canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get anybody else.

I beleive the previous season’s winner traditionally performs at the finale. Nothing new there.

  • Suzanne

There is no way that Adam is doing his duet with MJ. Possibly, like George Michael last year, MJ could be on the show–maybe the kids do a medley of MJ songs, and then MJ himself comes out and sings. But there is NO WAY MJ would do an actual duet with one of the competitors. I just think it would be royally beneath him to practice with an “amateur.”

No slam on Adam–he’s an amazing talent. I just think he’d going to end up with someone else–like David Cook got ZZ Top. I mean, it was good and all, but not mindblowing.

  • lavender1960

Anybody wonder if they have David Cook on there because they canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get anybody else

Uh I hardly see David Cook as a “couldn’t get anyone else”for the finale kind of guest. He is last year’s Idol winner, he’s in essence passing the torch and the boy has done very well, platinum single and platinum album. Some of the so called guest celebrities on the finale wish they were doing double platinum this year. And he will attract ratings especially now with this announcement that he is performing Permanent.

  • season8fan

ha thank you everyone who gave me a reply…apparently I am totally out of the loop. and by the way, sallyas1, you are not alone getting excited about Britney Spears. I just don’t know if I believe it. Same with MJ! I wish though. *cross fingers*

  • KrisAllen1

I dont see how Adam gets to do a duet with Kiss,Bowie and MJ.

I think that Adam gets a duet with Kiss and Bowie since he likes to rock.

Kris gets a duet with MJ and im saying this because paula said “Nobody knows MJ like you.So Kris gets MJ and Keith Urban.

This isnt the Adam show as much as TPTB want it to be I will scream if i have to see Kris get one duet and Adam three.

  • lavender1960

Season8fan, I would take me some Keith Urban over Michael Jackson any day of the week.

MJ will grandstand and take attention away from the Idol whereas Urban will make it a true duet.

    Now if it was Janet???

  • karenw

uhmmmm .. no one’s saying that any of them are getting more than one duet each … the three names (KISS, MJ and Bowie) are just names being thrown around as possible duet partners for Adam .. nothing’s confirmed and if any of them are confirmed then he will just be duetting with one of them.

  • Pidge

    Lot of whining going on.

  • cay

Neither of them have time to do more than one duet. And it will only be a short one at that. Does anyone know if Adam and Kris will duet?

TPTB, I don’t think, are pulling for either one. They both have won and will be the stars of both nights. I imagine they’d rather the one that fits Kara’s song win, but knowing the other one will get to pick their first single. I think their first single matters more than winning. Their after Idol career is way more important than a few minutes of confetti.

I’m a big Adam fan, but I think Keith Urban is a great duet. He’s very relevant and much better than MJ. I’d hate Adam dueting with him. Knowing how “hating Adam” is America’s favorite pastime now, if Adam duets then we’ll get all the “Adam is wierd” and then some “pervert”. I’m not thrilled at any of Adam’s except for Bowie and I think we’d know about it if it were a go. TWOP think’s he dueting with BEP, and I’m going with that.

  • AC

I have a feeling that if MJ appears, he will not sing.. I can imagine them doing a medley of his songs and then at the end, he just appears on stage and that’s it. If he does perform, I think it’s a hot mess waiting to happen.

Also, I don’t think that’s the correct Kara coronation song if it has been sung before. I remember reading something saying that she was currently writing a song to submit to them.

  • season8fan

yep, just what I thought. Britney is not performing :(

  • tierbee

    Whoà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s BEP?

    Black Eyed Peas, right?

Bleh, are they singing Boom Boom Pow? Every time I hear it I laugh, despite the pain in my ears, because the first time it came on my radio my 3 yr old yells, “MOMMY! That was TERRIBLE!”

    Tee hee.

  • Valentin432

OK so this is what I think will happen hoppefully:

    Sure things:
    Cyndi Lauper – Allison
    Keith Urban – Kris
I think both could be very good.

    Solo performance:
Black Eyed Peas: because their single is n °1
David Cook: because he is last year’s idol.

    Group performance:
With Carlos Santana: It would be like the School’s out group performance with Slash that I loved BTW.

    Other duets:
Lionel Richie – Danny Gokey: He should get one since he is 3rd right?
Kiss (most probable) or David Bowie – Adam: If it is the former it will be very entertaining, if it’s the later it will be mind blowing.
Queen Latifah – ?: Got no idea what she is doing here.
Jason Mraz – Matt?: Don’t know what he will do.

    Toilet break:
You know they will invite either Tatiana or Nick Mitchell.

Superstar who will close the show:
Michael Jackson: they will do a group number and then MJ will appear in the most dramatic way possible.

  • kimberann

“Anybody wonder if they have David Cook on there because they canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get anybody else.”

He is the best that is why he’s on. He’ll blow the others off the stage. Permanent will be a HUGE hit especially when the water works start up for Dave and everyone else. And he’s the best selling debut of the year. The others wish they were selling like he is. And he’s had a few smash hits. Dave is a top seller right now so he should be there, plus he’s THE AMERICAN IDOL.

if bowie fell through, so did my excitement for this finale….. :down_tb: none of the others appearing really interest me, so it’s back to meh…. the thought was fun while it lasted though….

  • Jx223

I think the non-Idol celebs should be eliminated from the finale entirely. It should be entirely past and present Idols, and maybe Idol-connected acts.

I really like the celebrity duets. I would rather see the contestants duet with a celebrity than with a past idol. I think that the contestants would prefer that as well.

Some of them arenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t going to be big after Idol, so a duet with a celebrity on the show might be the only chance one of the few chances they get to duet with one.

I think that they are probably thrilled that they are going to sing with famous people, including people that some of them admire.

I think that the celebrity duets benefit both the celebrities and the contestants. Especially if the contestants sound really good with the celebrities. I think that after the finale results show, the contestants that get duets with celebrities are going to gain a lot more followers on their Twitter pages.

I think that everyone with Twitter that gets to sing during the finale results show is going to get a bump in their number of followers. But those that get to sing with the celebrities, might get a really big bump in their number of followers.

  • KrisAllen1

Will there be a Kris/Adam duet? There is always a duet for the top 2 and i hope they dont change it.

David Cook will kill the stage.nobody will compete after he performs.I think everyone will need tissues.I’m so proud of him for coming on stage-so brave.

  • jpfan

Michael Jackson is quite tall. I’m not quite sure why people think he’s short.I kind of doubt he’ll be there. His career in the US is pretty much in tatters. And if he shows I think duets ain’t likely. He’ll do his songs(s) and leave.

  • terps

I predict Britney or MJ will be their (not much of a prediction though)

  • lavender1960

MJ as in the former King of Pop is taller than most people think but yeah it could be a guyliner overkill.

  • gingerly

OK so before I read all these comments, I have to say that DC performing Permanent is totally FTW. I didn’t honestly think he could. Yeah, it’s that special of a song. When I heard these rumors, and they’re still rumors until he gives his performance, it made me tear up. I hope that he will do Peranent or Bar-ba-sol. Either one is truly what David cook is about, and I just want him to represent himself. The worst thing for me is if he does Declaration. He’s already freaking declared himself to approximately 100,000 fans in Manila not to mention all the tours he’s done stateside. It just doesn’t make sense to me. But he isn’t WTF!Cook for nothing, though I seriously doubt he will do H4T.

As far as the coronation song this year, I won’t pass judgment based on it’s title or even lyrics. I want to hear it sung, by each of them, to give it a grade. I mean who woulda thunk that Magic Rainbows would still be charting on Billboard a year after it’s inception. Who woulda thunk it would be the best selling coronation single too? For safety purposes, I’d like to say me…but that’s a different story.

  • SparklesATL

Please don’t insult our dear MJ by calling that sick, child molesting and all around freak of nature MJ.

Noooooooo, no Janet! She might have another costume malfuction and Adam doesn’t need more scandals!

  • lavender1960

Well let’s just say if Bowie has finally firmly fallen through then Cookie could be the highlight of the finale. This is not of course not to be confused with the finale performance night in which case Kradam will be shining and we won’t know just which part of Kradam shone brighter until about Tuesday 9:00 pm EST.

I love BEP – I like that Boom Boom Pow song. Everyone needs great songs to dance and/or power walk/ or work out to eh?

  • Jolene

I think that everyone with Twitter that gets to sing during the finale results show is going to get a bump in their number of followers. But those that get to sing with the celebrities, might get a really big bump in their number of followers.

OK, now I feel old (and I’m in my early 20s, LOL). What exactly do they actually gain from increased number of followers on Twitter? There’s no money involved, right? It’s just more people potentially reading your one-liners about what you had for lunch. Twitter followings do not, as far as I know, directly correlate to how many singles/albums/ringtones you’re selling. I don’t get the big significance, other than bragging rights.

    :blink_tb:

  • soccerboi

Weren’t there rumors of MJ performing on last year’s finale? Im sure there were and I thought they thought they had him until the very last minute…

hmmmm…would be awesome but I highly doubt it would be a duet with Adam…the Producers would need someone more reliable… they would have to practice the perfromance. WIth MJs track record it woul dbe very unlikely. My guess is a duet with KISS…too bad Bowie backed out that would have been classic

  • lavender1960

A KISS-Adam duet is intriguing. Well Paul Stanley has a better voice than is often showcased in KISS songs – he did play the Phantom in a run of the Phantom of the Opera and acquitted himself quite well by all accounts. And I say this as one of the millions of teenagers who bought that KISS LIVE album and thought “I just want to rock and roll and Party every night” was inspired lyrically. Though my favourite KISS song was sung by Peter Criss, “Beth”.

Just please no tongue off with Gene though.

Question though – aren’t Adam and Kris asked what artists they would like to work with. Could KISS have been Adam’s No. 2 choice? Unless he is dueting with someone no one is considering as possible.

  • clearone

Well if Adam gets stuck with KISS it will be a real letdown. At least give him someone cool like Santana if he can’t have a superstar like Bowie or Urban.

Do you suppose that they could be saying that Bowie has fallen through but he really hasn’t just for the element of surprise?

I get tears at the thought of David Cook singing Permanent. If it really happens, it will be an incredibly special — and sad — moment. I wouldn’t blame David a bit if he can’t go through with it. Some things are just too raw. But if he can pull it off, I will stand in awe of his bravery.

  • Valentin432

I much prefer this year guest stars than last year:
    Mike Myers (horrible movie promo)
    Seal
    Donna Summer
    Bryan Adams
    ZZ Top
    Graham Nash
    Jonas brothers
    Reynaldo Lapuz
    One Republic

That’s 12 guest stars, so far there are 8 confirmed this year, there is still room for more.

Do you suppose that they could be saying that Bowie has fallen through but he really hasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t just for the element of surprise?

from your keyboard to god’s ears… seriously, this was the only reason i had any interest in the finale… i’m thinking of tuning in during the last half hour to hear the winner announced…. then i’d really be fit to be tied if bowie did manage to make it, and i missed seeing it live… :guns_tb:

OK, now I feel old (and Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m in my early 20s, LOL). What exactly do they actually gain from increased number of followers on Twitter? Thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s no money involved, right? Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just more people potentially reading your one-liners about what you had for lunch. Twitter followings do not, as far as I know, directly correlate to how many singles/albums/ringtones youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re selling. I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get the big significance, other than bragging rights.

It doesn’t directly correlate to how many singles/albums/ringtones you’re selling but more followers definitely could benefit the contestants. More people following them, means more people looking at their updates. If any sort of opportunity for a contestant comes up music wise concerts/album deals, there followers will find out about it.

They could also leave links up there to any music they might have out or put out and their followers could check that out, like what they hear and be more likely to buy their music. Plus if they have people Tweeting about them, it could create more buzz for them.

Last week, I believe that for a little while Adam and Kris were #1 and #2 in Twitter trends. That gave both guys more attention. I think that are definitely benefits for the contestants if they have a lot of followers on Twitter.

MJ, donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know if you heard but Paula confirmed on Johnjay and Rich this morning that Gokey would be the one dueting with Lionel Richie and all the kids would be performing with Santana.

So I guess today’s incident with Danny will rule out a duet of Endless Love then … and I guess Danny will want to stand a good few feet away from Lionel when they’re duetting just in case anyone should question their relationship.

Arenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t coronation songs all sound cheesey? This one may not be exception. Just have faith Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll be something great!

I think all the AI coronation songs to date have been cheesy to varying degrees.

There have been three Canadian Idol coronation songs that haven’t been cheesy, imo:

    Melissa O’Neil – Alive (CI3, 2005)

Eva Avila – Meant To Fly (CI4, 2006) – co-written by Raine Maida (of OLP) & his wife Chantal Kreviazuk

    Theo Tams – Sing (CI6, 2008)

I much prefer this year guest stars than last year:

    Mike Myers (horrible movie promo)
    Seal
    Donna Summer
    Bryan Adams
    ZZ Top
    Graham Nash
    Jonas brothers
    Reynaldo Lapuz
    One Republic
    Jordin Sparks
    Carrie Underwoods without pants;)
    Georges Michael

ITA. I much prefer this line up of celebrities, to last year’s.

IMO, Santana, Lionel Richie, Cyndi Lauper, Keith Urban are more interesting than Graham Nash, Bryan Adams and some of the other celebrities, that were on the show last year.

And it looks like this year we might get less silly stuff like the Marching Band with Reynaldo Lapuz, or the lady in the yellow clothes that was dancing on stage. I would much rather see the show be more focused on the actual contestants, and the celebrities they are going to sing with, instead of silly stuff we have gotten in the past.

  • movin2thabeet

The information about David Cook performing ‘Permanent’ is not just a rumor. Not only has OLP (co-writers) announced it on their MySpace page, but David Cook himself announced it on Fox TV in Milwaukee.

I admire him so much for being willing to stand and sing this beautiful song on the biggest of TV nights with this still very fresh grief – as well as the decision to donate the download sales to abc2.

It’s clear to me that this man, David Cook, is a true American Idol – in both his talents as a singer, performer and songwriter, but also as a outstanding individual of character.

  • lavender1960

I think that one does not have to be emotionally invested to an artist to appreciate a well written and poignant song which will have more impact due to the timing of said performance.

Somewhat similar to when U2 performed the song “Stuck in the Moment” in Sydney Australia in tribute to Michael Hutchence, after his unfortunate death. Bono had written the song about or for Hutchence as they were very good friends. Well OK a stadium full of 50,000 people makes more of an impact but hey. Give Cookie the right lighting treatment and we got increased Kleenex sales all across the land.

Thank you RemusL for the recap.

And the group numbers were far less cheesy on CI last season – a local boy is the choreographer/arranger – that and the chick who is one of the main creators and choreographers of Circque du Soleil, go figure.

Note to Ken Warwick – steal the choreographer from Canadian Idol over the summer.

  • Trina

It’s not even about being a huge fan or “getting” him. He’s going to sing a very powerful song he wrote about his brother who just died a couple of weeks ago and I see a lot of response to that. Yeah, obviously fans are going to be a BIT emotionally invested.

no new contestant picked songs and no instruments is a decided disadvantage to Kris….

  • Jx223

Also, according to rumor, Adam and Kris can re-arrange the song, but are not allowed play instruments during the performance.

I am not a fan of Kris and I prefer Adam to him, but I don’t like this rumor. I think that the contestants should be allowed to play instruments. I think that this is just another rule that TPTB have made up for the finale to try and slant it in Adam’s favor. It doesn’t make any sense IMO, that the contestants aren’t allowed to play instruments in the finale.

They have been allowed to do that all season long except for the semi-final rounds. so I don’t think that TPTB should take away that privelege from this now. Kris seems to benefit quite a bit when he gets to play instruments. Now he might have to rely even more on his rearranging skills, since he might not be able to play instruments.

no new contestant picked songs and no instruments is a decided disadvantage to Krisà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.

I happen to think it’s a disadvantage to Season 8 as a whole. Not that there weren’t a few great contestants. I just happen to think it will go down in the annuls as the Season that Sucked due to TPTB. I certainly hope the two finalists can redeem the season…and, yes, for me, it will take both of them but neither of the two finalists deserve to be laden with the shit that was season 8.

  • annabelina

  • anna in vegas

Also, David Cook will perform the song à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Permanentà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ , according to a MySpace message from Our Lady Peace.

WHY would they have such an emotionally sad thing like that happen on what is supposed to be the greatest moment of the season? (Joyful, as in confetti falling!)

In addition, wouldn’t Cook (and I love him!) singing Permanent just turn the finale into the David Cook Show? He had his “moment” last year everyone.

  • walkngirl

In spite of all the stuff that TPTB have done this year, I still really like this season but that is because of some of the contestants. I think that in some ways that TPTB did suck a lot of goodness out of this season.

Including the way they treated certain contestants, including some of the Wildcard people (Jesse Langseth, Ricky Braddy,), to IMO, their poor treatment/jerking around of my favorite contestant of this season Anoop. And including the very excessive pimping of Adam, excessive pimping of Danny, and overpimping of Lil.

And also them using the save for reasons that it was not intended for (as stated by them), Not to mention them not giving certain contestants enough credit. I think that TPTB really did suck a lot of goodness out of this season.

I think that it could have been a lot better if TPTB didn’t pull a lot of the stuff that they did. But some of the contestants really redeemed it for me, and I think as whole this group of contestants redeemed it, and kept it from IMO, being one of the worst seasons ever.

I think that overall this group of contestants is one of the most talented group of contestants this show has ever had. I would rank them up high along with seasons 5 and seasons 4 in terms of overall talent. And for me they kept this season from being awful, in spite of all of the stuff that TPTB did.

  • gingerly

So, I have to wonder, will we get Neal with the bow on the guitar, or will it be as if the band doesn’t exist, as TPTB made it seem on Combe Back to Me. The band really rocks that song out but to me it seemed like they didn’t want to pretend there was even a band on Idol. I will certainly be emotional based on the song selection, I am drying tears now, but it could be rather meh if the entirety of the amazing song isn’t allowed. I’m not saying that David isn’t amazing… I’m just saying that he’s so so very much more amazing when allowed to do it the way he wants. The sum of David and the EEB and tenfold more amazing than David being stifled by American Idol. The former is what I voted for last season, and they’ve not let me down once. The latter is AI drivel IMO.

  • Jolene

I have never heard David sing before his appearance on AI earlier this year so I have no emotional connection to him. I probably will after Wednesday night.

You may or you may not. Either option is good.

I already said I expect the Keith Urban/Kris Allen performance to be a real good one and I’m looking forward to the Cyndi Lauper/Allison Iraheta duet too.

Sure wish I could understand all the lovesfest for David Cook.

I think it’s not just Cook, though there’s a bunch of us who follow his career and really feel for what he must have been going through with Adam’s passing. The song Permanent is pretty special. Every AI alum has to put music that the label hopes will be marketable on the debut CD. It’s rare, though, when a song like Permanent makes the cut… it’s not radio friendly, it’s simple in composition, the emmotion is very very raw and honest. It’s personal but also universal and gripping. And you know, no matter how the performance is received, it struck me that 19 is giving Cook the opportunity to finish his Idol reign, as it were, with a song that represents the best of him as an artist. That’s a pretty cool thing and thus, to me, not really a downer.

OK, both of them wearing silver shoesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s cute. And the difference in leg length is a bit hilarious :)

Good Lord! Don’t let Kris’ wife find out about that!

  • ShariG

I haven’t read all of the posts, so will just give my impressions and then go back and read. I don’t think it is fair that Kris cannot play instruments, so I hope that is just a rumor. He is fine when he just sings, but I love how much he gets into a song when he plays his guitar. I also hope the rumor is true that they can rearrange the songs. Why would they not be able to do that when the judges have been pushing the originality of rearrangements all season.

I am on the lovefest train for David Cook. I get to see him in concert again on May 30th and I can’t wait. I love him and his band and think they are fantastic. I just hope he is there live and that he gets the proper respect that he deserves. He puts on a fantastic show and is really a great, great performer. Permanent is a beautiful song. I am surprised that he is able to sing it live considering how emotionally connected he is to that song. He is using his celebrity for a good cause and I give him credit for that.

I love the Keith Urban/Kris Allen duet. I’m all kinds of excited about that. It would also be very cool if Kris could sing with Jason Mraz since he has been compared to him in voice as well.

I am a Bowie fan and hope that the rumor that he will appear is true.

no new contestant picked songs and no instruments is a decided disadvantage to Krisà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.

And so it starts again…the “poor Kris” scenario…which is just back up for tomorrow in case his weak voice comes through again

I’m glad they’re singing the songs without instruments. Makes up for all the other times during the season when I wanted to grab that guitar when it was totally not needed but was used as a crutch

  • lifeisfun

maybe he’ll repaint his nail for the finale?

I wonder if they are still roomates, or if they moved rooms when the other contestants left?

  • wellhesback

Since when is a guitar a crutch? just curious. I do think it’s odd that they’ve allowed the contestants all along to use instruments, but not on the final contest song. weird.

  • lavender1960

    Indeed

Is Bob Dylan’s guitar a crutch? Is Joni Mitchell’s? Is Neil Young’s? Is Billie Joe Armstrong’s?

Is Elton John’s piano a crutch? Is Billy Joel’s? Is Diana Krall’s? Is Stevie Wonder’s keyboards a crutch?

No, it is part of who they are as performers and the singer-songwriter with a guitar is a tradition that is long and deep. And long may it live.

  • mk88

Well – its the coronation song. Maybe they want it to sound as much possible similar to the recordings? Playing an instrument that might not be part of recording might make the audience anticipate different sounds and leads to disappointment when they get the recording version.

  • lavender1960

I hear ya mk88 but let’s face it, if history repeats itself the coronation song will disappoint in any event.

Unless you like your music au fromage which apparently many do.

Davidà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s singing Permanent-geez, and the winner is who?

Exactly. If you ask me, this overshadows everything else that will happen at the finale results night, including the coronation of What’s-His-Name or What’s-His-Face. It transforms the evening into a mini Idol-Gives-Back.

Ditto to the person who said that Idol better have the sound system perfect that night because DC absolutely KILLS on this song.

  • Chipmunk

Exactly. If you ask me, this overshadows everything else that will happen at the finale results night

I seriously doubt that, and I’d wait for the actual night performances before stretching that far. Once Cook fans get over the high, it will be back to regular programming as usual.

  • Chipmunk

Well – its the coronation song. Maybe they want it to sound as much possible similar to the recordings? Playing an instrument that might not be part of recording might make the audience anticipate different sounds and leads to disappointment when they get the recording version.

Dont know about that…My point is that the whole “he cant get to play an instrument, poor kris” chorus is that its a non-issue, hence my “crutch” comments earlier. Its one song, they should just fucking sing it

His country week performance was one of his better ones that I remember and he just sang, so I fail to see the problem. Is Kris Allen that weak a singer that we have to pre-emptively worry about how he’ll do without an instrument? Even I, not a fan, give him more credit than that!

  • lavender1960

The fact of the matter is all those peeps were playing those instruments before they were famous, it is part of how they got famous and ergo part of who they are as performers and if Kris Allen feels that is part of who he is as a performer, should be up to him. Some may not like his guitar playing or think he sings better without it and that IS definitely Their Opinion.

However I think mk88 pointed out in a less dictatorial fashion that the issue is likely one of consistency [blandness] in respect to the coronation song which they have likely already recorded with the same band track.

I reserve the right to consider however whether such instrumentation might have been an improvement to said coronation song in general.

  • Chipmunk

Someone sounds like a Fox talk show host who likes to cut people off when he doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t agree with what they are saying. Shoot he cuts people off when he does agree.

I’m not saying you cant disagree with me, I’m saying dont get your knickers in a twist because I said for me, Kris Allen could have done without the guitar a few times this season..”Remember the time” is a perfect example..it was a crutch, because not only did he sound weak vocally, the guitar accompaniment ruined the song for me.

The fact of the matter is all those peeps were playing those instruments before they were famous, it is part of how they got famous and ergo part of who they are as performers and if Kris Allen feels that is part of who he is as a performer, should be up to him

Their music spoke for them a lot, and their instruments became a part of the style that got them where they are ,yes..this is a singing competition that often times just borders on a Karoake fest, if he gets one song to do and is told he cant use an instrument for that one song, it shouldnt be an issue IMO..Post Idol he it will be all up to him, he can surgically attach his guitar to his hip if he wants and establish himself as that type of performer. Its just one song on the show where he has been asked not to.I fail to see the problem but that’s just me

  • noctem seizure

I seriously doubt that, and Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d wait for the actual night performances before stretching that far. Once Cook fans get over the high, it will be back to regular programming as usual.

I suggest you youtube one of his performances of this song. Just about any one will do, all though some are probabaly even more powerful than others.

It’s not just the artist. It’s above all else the SONG, the way THIS artist connects with THIS song, the confluence of the performance with the recent passing of his cancer-stricken brother about whom the song was written, and the fact that it will be an oppportunity to donate to a relevant cause.

If he were singing just some random song from his record I’d agree with you. But, there are two songs on there that he absolutely SLAYS live. Lie is one. Permanent is the other one.

And I’m just gonna throw this out there– if he has the strength in him to give the type of performance of this song that he is capable of, I think you’re going to understand what many of us mean when we say we don’t feel the same connection to the performances of anyone who has taken the stage this season, the finalists included….

  • Matt

Been there done that, and I’m a cook fan, so I’ve seen it all.My first statement still stands…I highly doubt he’ll be the standout at the finale, there’s a lot going on. It will be a great show, and he’ll do great I’m sure. Other topics: Kris not being able to play his instrument on the coronation song is utter crap. Cook and Archie were allowed to rearrange and use instruments (Cook did on both counts; Archie didn’t play, and I don’t think he rearranged either). But, I’d wager a good spot of money that if Adam played an instrument, the “no instruments” rule wouldn’t have been brought back into effect this year.

  • daenarys

Cook talks about Adam and Kris, and also more on the charity single. Click.

  • lydia

Noctem, I agree with you completely. I find it funny that I really don’t care very much this season who wins AI since my horse was Allison and she was gone all too soon. I don’t enjoy Adam musically or visually (with the exception of his Allison duet) though I think he is probably a nice guy, just not my taste musically…….and his voice grates (YMMV). Simon begging for Adam votes did put me over the edge and I will probably throw a few votes Kris’s way since I enjoy him and I like that he earned his spot in the final completely through his own merit. But one year later I am definitely much more excited to see Cook perform in the finale than I am seeing a new winner crowned. I am very impressed that David is swinging for the fences, because when he does hit that home run, he takes my breath away. The combination of Cook charisma, voice, rock arrangement and singer connection with an awesome song has the potential for providing one of those rare “moments” that elevate this show above the general cheesiness and keep me tuning in year after year. That, DC is putting himself out there to raise money for a worthy cause just makes it more special. (And yes, I am an over-invested Cook fan and pretty squicked out about it too, but there it is.)

  • tierbee

    LOL, Lydia :)

(And yes, I am an over-invested Cook fan and pretty squicked out about it too, but there it is.)

I was remarking to my sister earlier today that my anxiety over David Cook AGAIN for the finale (and the fact that I will have a big box of Kleenex handy so I’m ready for said David Cook’s performance) is just another example of why there was no way I was getting over-invested in anyone this year. Exhausting!

I like Adam a lot, I also have gotten to be fond of Kris, and I’m really eager to see what they’ll come up with tomorrow. No! TODAY! WOO! Just kinda nice to not be quite so over-invested this year. It really is. I mean, they put out good albums I still will buy… I have a kinda mortifying number of Idol albums already…

    This:

Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s above all else the SONG, the way THIS artist connects with THIS song, the confluence of the performance with the recent passing of his cancer-stricken brother about whom the song was written, and the fact that it will be an opportunity to donate to a relevant cause.

Totally agree. And I was at the Race for Hope when he told everyone about his brother, and sniffled along with him there, so I’m gonna sniffle along with him here too. He’s a brave guy, Mr. Cook. One thing I love about him is his willingness to put himself out there with his heart on his sleeve, and here he goes again. Besides, this darn song made me cry the first time I listened to the album, and that was *before* Adam passed away. This is sure to slay me.

Get your sound right, Idol sound tech people, dammit.

  • tierbee

Oh, and the instruments thing – I don’t like… why change the rules on the last show? Weird. I’m not a conspiracy theory type of girl but it does make me wonder if they’d do that if Adam played an instrument too. Or if they would’ve done it last year if Archie or Cook didn’t play one?

Oh noes. I am not even going onto anything faintly resembling grassy knolls. I avoided it the past many moons that I’ve watched this show (since season 2), I’m avoiding it now :)

  • http://twitter.com/nokking nokking

okay Chipmunk already said everything I need to say re: no instrument allowed for the coronation song. I don’t see this as sabotaging Kris (and not everything is about that). If I understand correctly, contestants are not allowed to play instrument only on coronation song. Kris can still do it for the other 2 songs he will perform. Also, if he is versatile enough, he will be able to pull through. He didnt play instrument on one of his best performances, To Make You Feel My Love, and yet the performance was absolutely wonderful.

So no more excuses for either contestant, I think. At this stage it is up to their talents and how they will perform tomorrow.

And not fair comment about why Adam can’t play/should be playing instrument. After all, this is a singing, not musician, competition. Great if you can do other stuffs, but singing well is an absolute minimum requirement!

  • tierbee

No, I don’t think it is *unfair* about playing an instrument, since it applies to both… just weird… but this has been one hella weird season!

Both can sing. But if it was just a singing competition, they don’t need to prance in front of the TV with pimp lights and staircase entrances; they should be singing covered by a curtain or this should be done in radio.

IMO, the moment that they allowed instruments, AI became more than just a singing competition.

    Love this! LMAO!

About David and Permanent, I am constantly amazed about how fantastic David is as a person. Jeff Archuleta, in one of the conversations he had with the Filipino Cookleta fans this past week said that David is “a very sensitive person”. He “feels” so much which is why he cares so much for Archie. That for me encapsulates exactly the kind of person that he is. Seeing his reaction to when more than 40,000 people were singing and waving their arms to the “woah, woah” part of ADAM was just mind blowing. Performing Permanent will not only contribute to a cause that he cares so much about, it will also be a wonderful tribute to his brother. I cannot. CANNOT! wait for this performance.

As far as declaring a showstopper before it even happened… I’d wait. I don’t like to saddle insane expectations on anyone, let alone David, and let alone in such an emotional setting singing that song. When you build up expectations to insane level (eclipsing everyone? insane level) that makes it much more likely that reality will not live up to you vision.

I have no doubt that his fans (me included) will find it to be the highlight of the show. I also have no doubt that most of the Adam & Kris fans who have no emotional investment in Cook or his family tragedy, will not, even if the performance is very powerful.
BTW – the purpose of the night is still to crown the next American Idol, and that’s what TPTB will aim to highlight above all else.

Not entirely true. Yes both already have solid fan base but there are still many casual voters and people who aren’t as invested in these forums as we are LOL who will actually vote for best performances on the show. They only enjoy watching the show and take it as it is. If it is like in the past, I think coronation song could be crucial factor to decide the winner.

I feel the same, but I’m so proud of David!

  • jersey

Non invested fan here. I have voted for both Adam and Kris equally this year and this is my dream final two. I won’t be voting tonight because I don’t care who wins at this point.
My opinion on the instrument thing – I do think it’s a little wonky that they won’t allow instruments for the final song. Maybe they feel like it is “leveling” the playing field, since Adam doesn’t play, but I actually feel like it is putting Kris at a disadvantage since that is part of what makes him who he is. Unless they are going to dress them the same, and make them stand still in the middle of the stage as they sing, I don’t think there should be any limitations on each finalists interpretation of the coronation single.

  • cheese

I’m interested to see what Kris will do with the coronation song without an instrument. Since the only song of his I can remember without an instrument was a “stool song” I’ve never seen him move across the stage while singing. I remember certain contestants last year who didn’t have much stage presence when they weren’t playing (*coughJason’swaiterhandBrooke’stwirlingcough*), and I think that might be the case with Kris.

I probably won’t vote tonight unless someone really knocks my socks off, but I don’t see that happening with a reprise or a coronation song. In general, I’ve had stronger feelings about Adam’s performances than Kris’, but I think they both deserve to be there (although I’d still rather have Allison over Kris)

  • noctem seizure

Basically, the lack of instruments to prop up Adam just drives home the point that those who call him “the most talented Idol ever to grace that stage” or whatever garbage they spew are spouting utter crock. Everyone can see he’s a great performer and if you think he has the best voice evah, that’s mileage, but here’s my breakdown of what Adam can’t do:

    1.Can’t play an instrument.
    2. Can’t arrange music, at least not at any noteworthy level.
    3. Has not demonstrated the ability to compose music, at least any not at any noteworthy level.
    4. Has not demonstrated the ability to write lyrics, at least not at any noteworthy level.

So, basically what we have in Adam is someone who will sing an album full of songs where other people people composed them for him, arranged them for him, played all the instruments for him, and wrote all the lyrics for him. Adam, meanwhile, will hit all kinds of crazy notes when he sings these songs that some people will find amazing and others will find cringe-inducing. And he will give performances that, for better or worse, are gaze-maintaining.

Hmm. doesn’t sound like the “most talented Idol evah” to me. In fact, Kris sounds like much more of the “package artist” you keep talking about, Kara….

  • hypertwink

Hmm. doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t sound like the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“most talented Idol evahà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ to me. In fact, Kris sounds like much more of the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“package artistà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ you keep talking about, Karaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.

You make a great point; I agree. So if he knows how to play an instrument, Adam should break it out tomorrow for the biggest surprise ever.

  • unidentified

I’m not voting tonight either. I like both guys. They are completely different performers, but both really good. Hope (insert your guy’s name here) wins!

I am looking forward and kinda dreading seeing David Cook sing “Permanent”. To anyone who has lost a loved one to a lingering illness, and tried to spend as much time with them as possible, well it’s just heartbreaking situation. But I will be watching with tissues in hand, cause he’s David Cook, and he’s great.

  • lydia

Jolene, I do agree with you regarding having unrealistic expectations, and it can ruin an otherwise good performance for me. This has happened in the past when “my idol” had good but not spectacular performances. For me, I just hope DC gets through the song ok.

  • sunchick

I’m not conviced the lack of instruments props up Adam. Kris has the freedom to use an instrument twice during the finale, which happens to be same number of times that Cook used a guitar last year ( electric with Dream Big, acoustic with TWIK, SHFWILF was sans guitar .) I reserve the right to revoke this opinion if blatant bus throwing shenanigans abound tonight, but right now, I don’t think there’s a Blake vs. Jordin-esque plot to stifle Kris’s musicality. And as a Cook fan who read way too much into the pimping on top 3 night last year and had to pick my jaw up off the floor at Simon’s myopic doucheyness during the finale, I can say the bus throwing could very well surprisingly come for Adam just as likely as it could come for Kris at this point.

The difference between this finale and last season’s finale is that Cook’s Dream Big and whatever Archie sang, neither of those songs were Magic Rainbow. For whatever reason, they decided to give more exposure to the other song writing contest songs that got a lot of votes by allowing Cook and Archie to select one of them from a list, but those songs were not ever meant to be THE coronation single.

The big moment coronation song did not appear until after Cook won last season, and guess what? He wasn’t allowed to use an instrument during TOML either. Why? I’m guessing because 19 wants that money shot of the confetti falling and the winner with microphone in hand singing the sappy coronation ballad while looking into the camera, tears glistening in their eyes. I’m thinkin they aren’t going to exchange that tradition, like, probably ever, for a money shot of a guy or girl strumming a guitar behind a mic stand or sitting at a piano while the confetti falls.

This year there isn’t a song writing contest with a list of songs to play with, so they can’t save the confetti song for the winner after they win. Thus, no instruments.

    1.Canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t play an instrument.
    2. Canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t arrange music, at least not at any noteworthy level.
    3. Has not demonstrated the ability to compose music, at least any not at any noteworthy level.
    4. Has not demonstrated the ability to write lyrics, at least not at any noteworthy level.

    1. That’s true, but Adam does know how to mix/remix songs digitally. There has been ancedotal evidence of this that I don’t feel like digging up.
    2. Arguable. Tracks Of My Tears was arranged in a way that Smokey Robison himself had never heard before, and we really have no way of knowing how much help either guy gets from the band and Michael Orland.
    3. Not true. Both Adam and Kris have original tunes floating around. For my money, Crawl Through The Fire is the best of the bunch from either guy. Adam wrote that song with Monty Pittman, Madonna’s guitarist.
    4. Well, neither Adam nor Kris’s original lyrics are anything noteworthy or comparable to Cook’s awesome lyrical samples we had last season. I think both of them will have to work with a good lyricist when they make their albums.

As for Cookie’s Permanent being THE big moment… Here, here re: unrealistic expectations. Let’s face it…from a technical standpoint, the soundmixing has sucked ass this season. Plus it won’t be an easy song to sing. I think it will be A moment for him and for his fans, no matter how well he sings, just because it’s his last performance as the incumbant American Idol and it’s that particular song, and he’s kind of closing out his run as the AI the way he ended his run on the show with TWIK…singing something meaningful from the heart…but this time, it’s his own words, and it’s written for his brother. That’s significant no matter how you slice it. But the confetti will come later for the winner, be it Kris or Adam, and that will also be A moment…it always is, because it’s the culmination of a season of competition. Plus people at large seem to really like both guys. So yeah, it will be a moment. I don’t think Cook’s moment and Adam/Kris’s moment have to be, um, competing with each other for attention.
