Due to popular demand, check out the new song from Britney Spears called “Hold it Against Me”. Apparently, people have been waiting for this premiere as if it were Christmas. Or something.

It’s got a nice beat and it’s easy to dance to. Other than that, I’ve got nothing.

You think this is off-topic? There are some blog connections here! Britney guest-starred on Glee this season, and Ryan Seacrest debuted the track on his radio show today.

In fact, the audio after the jump. comes courtesy of Ryan. Ryan sounds excited enough to pee his pants. Heh.

Listen to the track after the JUMP…

The concensus on my feed is a whole lotta ‘Meh’. I can’t see it flopping like Xtina’s ‘Not Myself Tonight.’ There’s nothing objectionable, but neither is there anything interesting. This is another question of ‘will radio will play anything by Brit?’ So far, the answer seems to be a yes. At least on my station who is spinning it every hour. I hope Pink’s ‘Perfect’ charts and sells better.

That’s pretty much what I feel too, just “Meh”, nothing special about this song.

  • canadiandcfan

agree with the ‘Meh’ of it all. The song doesn’t even make me want to dance… just change the channel. Comes nowhere close to ‘Circus’ IMO

  • Trina

I’m a tiny bit underwhelmed and its nowhere as good as her best stuff but yay im still excited to have new music from her! Been a huuuuge fan from day one. IMO this won’t flop like Christina because radio has been more eager for Brit and I think she’s got a better track record.

  • http://www.dancin.ca dancin

just not my thing.. processed.. autotuned pop CRAP is my personal opinion of it

doubt any session musicians were hired for it its sssssssso techno

  • Valentin432

Never been a Britney fan, but some of her songs had that undeniable catchy pop sound that you knew they were going to be big hits.
This one just feels like a lot of recycled stuff from techno artists.
A big beat and a dancing breakdown in the bridge but not much melody and it doesn’t sound like Britney’s voice either.

There is a trend on pop of more techno sounding tunes like BEP, Enrique and FEM but it’s not going all the way to the top like Pink, Bruno Mars, Rihanna or Katy. This being Britney, it will be played a lot but I’m not sure it’s going the big smash hit it was destined to be.

  • FREIDAG

*sigh* I guess this is what I’m going to be stuck hearing every other minute whenever I turn on the radio. I’m not impressed at all. And I was really looking forward to hearing her song. I’d dance to it, but I don’t think I’d buy it. I’m sure that’s not going to be a problem for Britney because a lot of people are going to!

  • sass

    Where has good music gone?

  • Zastine4974

More autotuned crap. Just what the world needs.

  • Lock

Seeing Z100, Ryan, others tweeting about the song so heavily and thought it gotto to be a good one. Listened three times and was totally disappointed. I am not impressed with this song at all. Her older songs were much better. I’ve had enough autotuned songs.

  • sr4mjc

I love pop, I like some techno songs. But this just isn’t a good song. The demo was pretty much the same. It’s not particularly catchy, the lyrics are boring. Like Valentin432 said, it’s just recycled and nothing new. Even hating Kesha songs is a reaction, I’m just meh on this one. Go Pink!

  • Eriko

Ugh…makes some of the pop songs sound like AAA material. What will it take for this mindless herd mentality in pop music to peak and start taking another direction

  • abbysee

This is shit, pure and simple. I love to dance but it didn’t inspire even a wiggle. Of course it will sell like hot cakes and be ubiquitous on radio, so there!

  • jpfan

Very, very boring. Horrible meh lyrics. But I also thought Womanizer
was horrible and it did fine. I’m sure she’ll do a super sexy video that will help sell the song but it’s sucky.

Written and produced by Max Martin and Dr. Luke. Maybe both those guys should take a break from producing Pop for awhile. This really is utter shit. (But I’m liking Stargate again because I really like Rihanna’s single “What’s My Name.”)

  • fuzzywuzzy

I’m not a fan of the techno effects on vocals in some pop songs. I guess that I don’t understand why this trend started in the first place.

  • Kitwana

I think that what you are all forgetting is that Britney is a visual artist. You can’t fully appreciate this song until it is performed live. We should wait for the Grammy performance or the music video before passing judgment.

The fact that Ryan Seacrest is playing the song pretty much ensures it will be a hit. I don’t recall him supporting Christina in the same way.

  • revolution

back to Bowersox,,,Britney is not candy for the ears.

  • gangreen29

This sucks. It isn’t even catchy.

I think that what you are all forgetting is that Britney is a visual artist.

Lol, no this song just sucks.

  • bentley1530

It is not one of her best but at least you can tell who is singing and I am sure the video will be great.

  • girlygirl

It’s just meh for me. The verses have no melody (I think there’s maybe 2 notes in the verses). The chorus and bridge are better. I can see this being a huge hit in the clubs and on the dance charts. And, because it’s Britney, it’ll probably sell like crazy and do really well on the pop and rhythmic charts as well, although I don’t know if it’ll be a #1 hit.

Definitely not up to her past standards.

  • Trina

I don’t recall Ryan giving Christina this much early support either. And Z100 LOVES Brit so I’m sure they will play this like crazy.

The video for this should be hot! I’m loving the breakdown.

  • Joyed

Thanks for posting this MJ! – I can’t wait to listen later :)

  • koshka

She sounds like Katy Perry.. and that isn’t a compliment.

MJ thanks for posting. I’ve been wondering what it sounds like, but I wasn’t motivated enough to track it down.

  • lorismile

Don’t like this song. I loved Womanizer, etc… but this song doesn’t do it for me. It has a weird pace or something.

My 21 yr old daughter is a big fan and she left after 45 secs. She didn’t like it and is disappointed. She said it wasn’t “dancy” enough.

  • HotHotHot

    Ugh! Autotune much?

  • Junior

I was expecting the usual techno-pop, I wasn’t expecting it to be this bad. Seriously, techno or not, this is just not a good song.

  • tinawina

The way you all were talking about this I expected epic horribleness, but it actually sounds like a solid club song to me. It should be great if you are out dancing. On the radio it will blend in fine. I actually think it will be a hit.

I don’t even like Britney, but this is far from a song of hers I’ll hate forever. And I have a lot of her songs I hate.

  • lorismile

It should be great if you are out dancing.

See, I can see it in the club, it’s very techno but it has a weird beat for dance IMO. But, it’s Britney. It’ll be a hit.

  • koshka

Exactly. I think the song is just average for what it is – horrible, no. I’m certainly not wow’d.

  • jtoms

    bridge/breakdown is hot.

Sry for saying that but I didn’t like any of her recent songs, no matter how hot her MVs were for those songs. I missed old Brit.

  • GreenHippo

    It’s utter crap!
Her voice is grating and autotuned, the lyrics are so dumb. NO THANK YOU!
What urks me is that this will be played (see Ryan Seacrest) over and over again, while no one gave/gives Allison Iraheta a chance. Compare her songs and superb voice to this junk…. I DON’T GET IT.
It frustrates me to no end. :(

All of a sudden I became a huge Katy Perry fan, compared to this Katy is golden…..

    AWESOME!!!!!!!!!

  • Mark

I have no problem with Britney (I’m no snob), but the song just isn’t that good. OK, it’s got a great chorus. But the verses are really, really weak, and it feels like some of the added effects were added without a whole lot of thought. It’s not as bad as Gimme More (where it felt like they took some stuff off of her answering machine and added it into the song to fill the spaces), but it doesn’t really make sense either.

    AWESOME!!!!!!!!!

I love your enthusiasm <3 – I guess teens like Britney!
And I am an old-fart, so I don't get it.

  • ComeBack2Me

A meh from me too. It’ll be a hit because it has her name attached, but I am very underwhelmed based on all the hype this was getting from people who had already heard it. It sounds just like the demo.

  • koshka

All of a sudden I became a huge Katy Perry fan, compared to this Katy is golden…..

LOL I just thought of something.. maybe they should have a britney, ke$ha, Katy, Taylor sing off. That would be something to hit the mute button for. ;)

  • Trina

I’m 37 and I’m been fantarding over her since Baby One More time lol Seriously her fanbase is MUCH more broad than just teens. She’s got a solid base, sure some are young but many are from back in the day who stuck by her for years. FWIW fellow fans on Twitter and Facebook are mixed but more leaning towards thinking it will be a hit.

  • movin2thabeet

“That is hot” – like folks are going to believe that whatever Ryan says is fact, and go apeshit for the song. I suppose if your mind was fried on drugs or junk food or some sort of koolaid, this might work for you. As for me, no, it does not. Not even a little bit. Of course, Britney just needs to say ‘boo’ and she’ll sell a ton of singles, cause its Britney!!!! OMG!!!

Best case scenario, for music lovers everywhere, is that Ryan gives it the ol college try, it rises quickly to some mythical peak on the charts, and catapults down even faster. That way, Britney gets to keep her cool rep, and the rest of us are spared from this crap being on the radio for long. Given that I stay far away from Top 40 radio nowadays for this very reason, I am looking forward to the day I can return. I can envision Ryan saying, “and now for some killer music” as an intro to David Cook’s new single, or for REM, Coldplay, U2…

Get out of my brain! LOL

  • dcglam

It’s got a nice beat and it’s easy to dance to. Other than that, I’ve got nothing.

    Ditto!

  • St.Lucia

    I’m a Britney fan.

But this…I don’t like it. I’ve listened to it a few times today and I’ve tried to find something that makes it stick with me or at least make me enjoy it and I’ve got nothing. I just flat out don’t like it. The chorus doesn’t even stick with me. NOTHING. It’s in one ear and out the other.

It’s a whole lot of meh and a big disappoint from me. I expected better.

  • pineappletree

I like it a lot esp the breakdown part. Can’t wait to dance to it in clubs.

Also “Hold It Against me” is officially the most played radio song in a day, surpassing Mariah Carey. This will be a hit.

  • Trina

This has like over 500 spins already :o

  • Joyed

I finally heard it! I like it because it is more melodic than something like Womanizer – I actually like how her voice sounds on this. The rhythm reminds me of an Enrique Inglesias song that came out in the last year.

Now, only the title stayed in my head on first listen, so I’m not sure how catchy the actual song is, but you usually only need the hook these days, anyway…

  • pineappletree

It has 630+ Spins on Top 40 alone :o as of 930pm EST. Get it girl!!

Sorry I am such a Britney fantard…I love her!!

  • Valentin432

The song was played a record breaking times in his first day and is absolutely skyrocketing on itunes.

The hype machine worked really well.

  • Trina

#11 on itunes in 2 1/2 hours, HIAM trending worldwide and record breaking first day spins – all hail the queen!

Make that #9 on itunes woot woot!

  • sunchick

LOL I just thought of something.. maybe they should have a britney, ke$ha, Katy, Taylor sing off.

Maybe they already did, and a bunch of birds in Arkansas were the unfortunate audience. Autotunacalypse.

Pop it like a hood? :D It sounds like it was written by the dudes from Night At The Roxbury, which is kind of unintentionally hilarious, I’ll give it that. Anyway, Toxic holds onto it’s “only Britney song I dig” crown, which means Night At The Roxbury: The Musical will be a huge hit and I’ll continue to wonder about the collective sanity of America.
